Chapter 11

Fire and Ashes

The abandoned customs warehouse at Pier 17 stood like a forgotten monument to another era.

Its rusted steel walls groaned under the weight of years.

Broken windows rattled in the cold wind sweeping in from the harbor.

Rain drummed steadily against the corrugated roof, masking the sounds inside.

To anyone passing by, it looked abandoned.

It wasn't.

A black delivery van rolled through the open loading gate.

Its headlights disappeared into the darkness.

The engine died.

For a moment...

Only silence remained.

Then the rear doors swung open.

Elena blinked against the harsh light.

Her wrists were still bound.

Her ankles trembled as two men helped—not gently—her out of the van.

One of them looked at her swollen stomach.

"Careful."

The other scoffed.

"The boss said keep her alive."

"Nothing about making her comfortable."

Elena was led through a maze of empty shipping crates.

Old forklifts sat covered in dust.

Chains hung from ceiling beams, swaying gently.

Finally, they reached a small office built above the warehouse floor.

Inside...

A familiar figure sat tied to a chair.

His white hair was stained with blood.

His face was swollen beyond recognition.

Yet the moment he saw Elena...

His tired eyes softened.

"Mrs. Rossi..."

Giovanni whispered.

Elena gasped.

"Giovanni!"

She rushed toward him before the guards pulled her back.

"What did they do to you?"

The old butler managed a weak smile.

"They're disappointed..."

"...because I still remember how to keep a secret."

One of the guards laughed.

"Not for much longer."

The office door opened.

Heavy footsteps echoed across the floor.

Every guard straightened immediately.

The room fell silent.

A man entered wearing a charcoal suit and black leather gloves.

His face remained hidden beneath the shadow of a wide-brimmed hat.

Only his voice was unmistakable.

Cold.

Controlled.

Patient.

"So..."

He looked at Elena.

"We finally meet properly."

Elena stared at him.

"You destroyed my family."

The man smiled faintly.

"No."

"I simply revealed what your family truly was."

He turned toward Giovanni.

"And our loyal servant."

Giovanni spat blood onto the floor.

"I served honorable people."

The stranger's smile disappeared.

"You served fools."

At that exact moment...

Less than a kilometer away...

Julian's SUV stopped beside an abandoned fuel depot.

Nathan raised a pair of binoculars.

"Four armed guards."

"Two at the main entrance."

"One on the roof."

"One patrolling the east side."

Julian looked toward the warehouse.

"And Elena?"

Nathan lowered the binoculars.

"I can't see her."

Julian reached for the door handle.

Nathan grabbed his arm.

"If we rush in..."

"They'll kill the hostages."

Julian forced himself to stop.

For Elena.

For their son.

He had to think.

Inside the warehouse...

The mysterious man slowly removed a folder from his briefcase.

He placed several documents on the table.

Elena immediately recognized them.

Property transfers.

Corporate ownership papers.

Rossi Holdings.

"Sign them."

She stared at him.

"Never."

He shrugged.

"I expected that answer."

He nodded toward one of the guards.

The guard struck Giovanni hard across the ribs.

The old man cried out in pain.

"Stop!"

Elena shouted.

The stranger looked at her calmly.

"You see?"

"Every decision has consequences."

Giovanni struggled to lift his head.

"Don't..."

he whispered.

"Don't sign..."

The guard raised a metal pipe again.

Another brutal blow landed.

Blood spread across Giovanni's shirt.

Elena screamed.

"Enough!"

Tears streamed down her face.

"Please!"

The man in the suit leaned closer.

"I don't enjoy violence."

"You force me to use it."

Outside...

Nathan studied the building's blueprint on a tablet.

"There."

He pointed to an old maintenance tunnel leading beneath the warehouse.

"It connects to the boiler room."

Julian nodded.

"We go underneath."

Nathan looked at the two security officers.

"No gunfire unless absolutely necessary."

"Our priority is getting Elena out."

Inside the office...

The stranger's phone vibrated.

He answered without looking away from Elena.

"Yes?"

A guard's voice crackled through the speaker.

"We've detected movement outside."

The man's expression remained calm.

"Julian?"

"We're not sure."

The stranger smiled.

"I knew he'd come."

He ended the call.

Then looked directly at Elena.

"Your husband has always been predictable."

Deep beneath the warehouse...

Julian and Nathan crawled through a narrow maintenance tunnel.

Steam hissed from old pipes overhead.

The air smelled of rust and oil.

Nathan whispered,

"Another twenty meters."

Julian nodded silently.

Every second felt like an hour.

Above them...

The stranger calmly lit a cigar.

The orange glow briefly illuminated part of his face.

Not enough for Elena to recognize him.

But enough for Giovanni.

The old man's eyes widened.

"You..."

he whispered.

"It was you..."

The stranger looked at him.

"I was wondering how long it would take."

Elena turned toward Giovanni.

"You know him?"

Giovanni's breathing grew heavy.

"He..."

Before he could finish...

The stranger drew a pistol.

One shot.

The bullet struck Giovanni in the chest.

Elena screamed.

"No!"

Giovanni slumped forward.

Blood spread rapidly across his shirt.

With his final strength...

He looked at Elena.

Then toward the floor beneath her feet.

His trembling lips formed only two words.

"Below..."

Then he stopped moving.

The gunshot echoed through the warehouse.

Julian froze.

He looked at Nathan.

"That was upstairs."

Nathan's face hardened.

"We're out of time."

The stranger calmly returned the pistol to his jacket.

"No more interruptions."

He picked up a lighter.

Then tossed it toward a trail of gasoline running across the warehouse floor.

Flames erupted instantly.

Fire raced through the old building.

Wooden crates exploded into orange light.

Smoke billowed toward the ceiling.

The guards hurried toward the exits.

One shouted,

"The whole place's burning!"

The stranger simply smiled.

"Exactly."

He looked at Elena one last time.

"When they find this warehouse..."

"They'll find only ashes."

He turned and disappeared into the smoke.

The fire spread with terrifying speed.

Burning beams crashed onto the warehouse floor.

Elena coughed violently as smoke filled the office.

Her wrists were still tied.

The flames crept closer.

She wrapped both arms around her stomach.

"I'm not giving up..."

she whispered to her unborn son.

"Not today."

The maintenance hatch burst open.

Julian climbed into the warehouse just as the first section of the roof collapsed.

"Elena!"

His voice echoed through the smoke.

From somewhere above...

A weak answer came.

"Julian!"

He looked up.

Through the flames.

Through the falling debris.

He saw her.

Alive.

Trapped.

Without hesitation, he ran toward the burning staircase.

Nathan shouted behind him.

"The floor's collapsing!"

Julian never slowed.

Because after eight months of searching...

May you like

He wasn't about to lose her again.
