Chapter 13

Chapter 13
The Final Betrayal
The explosion could be heard across the harbor.
The abandoned customs warehouse collapsed into a mountain of burning steel and concrete, sending a tower of black smoke into the evening sky.
Firefighters rushed toward the wreckage.
Reporters gathered behind police barricades.
Everyone believed no one could have survived.
Everyone...
Except Julian Rossi.
The hidden tunnel stretched nearly two hundred meters beneath the old harbor.
Built decades earlier as an emergency escape route, it was damp, narrow, and barely tall enough to stand upright.
Nathan led the way with a flashlight.
Behind him, Julian carried Elena in his arms while she held their newborn son tightly against her chest.
The baby had stopped crying.
Instead, he slept peacefully against his mother's heartbeat.
As if he had no idea he had been born in the middle of hell.
"Almost there," Nathan whispered.
A faint breeze drifted through the tunnel.
Fresh air.
Freedom.
Julian looked down at Elena.
"How are you feeling?"
She smiled weakly.
"I've been better."
He gently kissed her forehead.
"You were incredible."
She looked at the tiny face wrapped in the blanket.
"No."
Her eyes filled with tears.
"He was."
The tunnel ended behind an abandoned lighthouse overlooking the harbor.
Nathan carefully pushed open the rusted hatch.
Cool night air rushed inside.
Ambulances waited nearby after firefighters discovered the hidden exit.
Doctors immediately surrounded Elena and the baby.
"Mother and child first!"
A paramedic guided Julian toward another ambulance.
"We need to examine your shoulder."
"I'm fine."
"Mr. Rossi, please."
Julian reluctantly nodded.
Only after watching Elena and their son safely inside an ambulance.
An hour later...
The Rossi family occupied a private floor at St. Augustine Medical Center.
Doctors confirmed what Julian had prayed to hear.
"The baby is perfectly healthy."
"A little early..."
"But remarkably strong."
Julian exhaled slowly.
"And Elena?"
"She'll recover."
The obstetrician smiled.
"She needs rest."
"Nothing else."
For the first time in months...
Julian allowed himself to believe the nightmare might finally be ending.
He was wrong.
Nathan entered the hospital room carrying a sealed evidence bag.
"I found something."
Inside the bag rested a silver lighter.
Its surface had been blackened by smoke.
A family crest was engraved on the side.
Julian's expression changed instantly.
He recognized it.
He had seen that crest thousands of times.
The intertwined initials:
M.R.
Marco Rossi.
Nathan placed another item on the table.
A security photograph recovered from a nearby traffic camera.
It showed a black sedan leaving the harbor exactly three minutes before the explosion.
The driver's face wasn't visible.
But the license plate was.
Registered to...
Marco Rossi.
Silence filled the room.
Elena slowly looked toward Julian.
"I didn't want to believe it either."
Julian closed his eyes.
"My own brother..."
Nathan spoke quietly.
"The evidence keeps pointing toward him."
"The lighter."
"The vehicle."
"The voice from the recording."
Julian shook his head.
"There has to be another explanation."
Nathan didn't answer.
Because there wasn't one.
Later that night...
Julian drove alone to the Rossi Estate.
He walked through empty hallways until he reached his father's old study.
Hidden inside the desk was a small safe.
Only Julian and Marco knew the combination.
Inside were their father's personal journals.
Letters.
Legal documents.
Julian searched until he found the final will.
Attached behind it was another envelope.
Addressed to both sons.
He opened it carefully.
His father's handwriting was unmistakable.
If you are reading this together, then I have failed as a father.
If only one of you is reading... then I fear I failed even more.
Julian swallowed hard.
He continued.
Marco has always believed I loved Julian more.
He was wrong.
I simply trusted Julian with responsibility... because Marco loved power more than people.
Watch over your brother.
One day, his ambition may become his prison.
Julian lowered the letter.
His father had seen it years ago.
He had tried to warn them.
The next morning...
Marco requested another meeting.
This time...
At the old Rossi Vineyard.
The place where the brothers had spent every summer as children.
Nathan immediately objected.
"It could be a trap."
Julian nodded.
"I know."
"Then don't go."
"I have to."
The vineyard was silent beneath gray skies.
Rows of grapevines stretched across the hills.
Marco stood beside the old stone fountain.
Just as he had twenty years earlier.
He smiled when Julian approached.
"You came."
"I almost didn't."
Marco laughed softly.
"You always were curious."
Julian held up the silver lighter.
"You left this behind."
Marco looked at it.
Then smiled.
"So."
"You know."
"No."
Julian's voice hardened.
"I suspect."
Marco slipped both hands into his coat pockets.
"Then ask."
Julian looked directly into his brother's eyes.
"Did you destroy my family?"
Several seconds passed.
Only the wind answered.
Then Marco sighed.
"You still think too small."
Julian frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Marco stepped closer.
"It was never about Elena."
"It was never about the baby."
"It wasn't even about you."
Julian's heartbeat quickened.
"Then what was it about?"
Marco's smile slowly disappeared.
"Our father."
Julian stared in disbelief.
Marco continued calmly.
"Father stole everything from me."
"He made me watch while he handed the empire to his favorite son."
"You."
Julian shook his head.
"He believed I was better suited."
"No."
Marco's voice suddenly rose.
"He believed I was dangerous."
"You were."
The words escaped Julian before he could stop them.
For a moment...
The brothers simply stared at one another.
Years of resentment hung between them.
Marco laughed bitterly.
"There he is."
"The perfect son."
"The responsible heir."
"The family hero."
His eyes turned cold.
"You know what Father never understood?"
Julian said nothing.
Marco stepped closer until only inches separated them.
"I wasn't born a monster."
"He created one."
Before Julian could answer...
The sound of slow applause echoed across the vineyard.
Both brothers turned.
A black limousine rolled onto the gravel road.
The rear door opened.
An elegant older woman stepped out.
Julian's face drained of color.
He recognized her immediately.
Isabella Rossi.
His aunt.
His late father's younger sister.
She looked at both men and smiled.
"How disappointing."
"I had hoped one of you would kill the other before I arrived."
Julian whispered,
"Aunt Isabella..."
She laughed softly.
"Oh, Julian."
"You still think your brother is the mastermind."
She looked toward Marco.
"He isn't."
Marco lowered his eyes.
For the first time...
He looked like a man taking orders.
Not giving them.
Julian slowly realized the horrifying truth.
Marco had betrayed him.
But he hadn't acted alone.
He had been someone's pawn all along.
And the woman standing before him...
May you like
Was the one who had been pulling the strings from the very beginning.
