Chapter 2

Chapter 2
Eight Months of Silence
Julian Rossi didn't sleep that night.
The presidential suite overlooking the glittering skyline remained untouched. The champagne sat unopened in a silver bucket. Dinner had long gone cold. The city's lights shimmered beyond the floor-to-ceiling windows, but he barely noticed them.
His mind was trapped in one place.
A narrow service corridor.
A woman in a gray housekeeping uniform.
A swollen belly.
And one word that echoed louder than anything else.
"Sir."
Eight months ago, she had whispered, "I love you."
Tonight, she had looked through him as if he were nothing more than another hotel guest.
Camila emerged from the bedroom wearing a silk robe.
"You're still awake?"
Julian stood motionless by the window.
"Go to sleep."
She crossed the room and wrapped her arms around his waist.
"You've been staring outside for two hours."
No response.
She rested her chin against his shoulder.
"I know tonight was a shock."
Julian slowly turned.
"A shock?"
His voice was quiet.
"My wife disappeared for eight months."
"I find her working as a housekeeper."
"She's pregnant."
"And you call that a shock?"
Camila immediately realized she'd chosen the wrong words.
"I didn't mean—"
"I know what you meant."
He gently removed her hands.
"I need to be alone."
Camila's smile faded.
For the first time since they had started dating, she felt like an outsider in his life.
She silently returned to the bedroom.
But before closing the door, she glanced back.
Julian hadn't moved.
He was still staring into the darkness.
Thinking about another woman.
The memories came without warning.
Eight months earlier...
The Rossi mansion had never felt warmer.
Morning sunlight streamed through the breakfast room as Elena laughed over a burnt piece of toast.
"You cooked?"
Julian grinned proudly.
"I followed the recipe."
She held up the blackened toast.
"The recipe for charcoal?"
He laughed.
"It looked better in the video."
Elena walked over and kissed his cheek.
"I married a billionaire."
She smiled.
"And somehow I'm still making breakfast."
Julian slipped his arms around her.
"I can build skyscrapers."
"But apparently..."
He pointed toward the toast.
"I'm helpless in a kitchen."
She rested her forehead against his.
"You don't have to impress me."
"I already chose you."
Their marriage had never been perfect.
Julian worked too much.
Meetings often lasted late into the night.
Business trips filled nearly every month.
But whenever he came home...
Elena made the house feel alive.
Fresh flowers appeared in every room.
Music drifted through the halls.
She remembered birthdays Julian forgot.
She convinced him to take weekends off.
She reminded him there was life beyond contracts and profits.
His employees feared him.
His investors admired him.
Elena simply loved him.
Then everything changed.
One ordinary Tuesday morning...
Julian kissed her goodbye.
"I'll be back before dinner."
"I'll wait."
Those had been the last words she ever spoke to him.
At least...
Until tonight.
When he returned that evening, the mansion felt wrong.
Too quiet.
No music.
No lights.
No scent of fresh coffee.
He called her name.
"Elena?"
Nothing.
He searched every room.
Bedroom.
Library.
Garden.
Pool house.
No sign of her.
Only one thing rested neatly on the bedside table.
Her wedding ring.
He had called her phone nearly two hundred times that night.
It remained switched off.
Police searched nearby roads.
Private helicopters scanned forests.
Security footage showed Elena leaving the estate alone...
...on foot.
Then disappearing beyond the front gate.
After that...
Nothing.
No taxis.
No trains.
No flights.
No bank activity.
No passport usage.
It was as though she had walked into thin air.
Present Day.
Julian opened the safe inside the hotel suite.
From a leather folder, he removed a single photograph.
It showed him and Elena on their wedding day.
She wore a simple ivory dress.
No diamonds.
No extravagant ceremony.
Just laughter.
She had insisted on keeping the wedding private.
"It's our promise," she had told him.
"Not the world's."
Julian traced her smiling face with his thumb.
"If you left because you stopped loving me..."
He swallowed hard.
"I could have survived that."
His voice broke.
"But this..."
He looked toward the service elevators.
"...this makes no sense."
Across the hotel...
Elena slowly pushed her housekeeping cart through the deserted hallway.
It was nearly two o'clock in the morning.
Most guests were asleep.
Only the night staff remained.
She unlocked Suite 1426.
The room had already been vacated.
She quietly changed the linens.
Collected empty glasses.
Folded towels.
Each movement was slow.
Careful.
The baby had become heavier during the past few weeks.
Every bend made her back ache.
Every step exhausted her.
Still...
She never complained.
"Take a break."
Maria's gentle voice came from the doorway.
Maria Alvarez, the housekeeping supervisor, carried two paper cups of tea.
Elena smiled faintly.
"I still have four rooms."
"They can wait."
Maria handed her a cup.
"You've barely eaten today."
"I'm fine."
Maria gave her a knowing look.
"No."
"You're pretending."
They sat together on the edge of the bed.
For a few minutes...
Neither spoke.
Finally Maria asked the question she had avoided all evening.
"What happened downstairs?"
Elena stared into her tea.
"He found me."
"I guessed."
"He's still looking."
Maria sighed.
"I don't think he'll stop this time."
Elena smiled sadly.
"I know."
Maria had met Elena seven months earlier.
A frightened young woman.
Pregnant.
With no luggage except one small suitcase.
No references.
No family.
No explanation.
Only one request.
"I need work."
Maria had hired her immediately.
Not because the hotel needed another housekeeper.
But because Elena looked like someone running from a storm.
"Does he know about the baby?"
Maria asked softly.
Elena shook her head.
"He suspects."
"But I didn't tell him."
"Why?"
Elena's eyes filled with tears.
"Because if he knows..."
She gently placed a hand over her stomach.
"They'll know too."
Maria reached across the bed and squeezed her hand.
"You can't hide forever."
"I don't need forever."
Elena whispered.
"I only need until my baby is born."
Meanwhile...
Julian stood inside the hotel's security office.
The night security manager looked nervous.
"I'm sorry, Mr. Rossi."
"I can't release employee records."
Julian placed his business card on the desk.
"I don't want confidential information."
"I only need one answer."
The manager hesitated.
"Which is?"
"Does Elena work here under her real name?"
Silence.
The manager looked toward the closed office door.
Then back at Julian.
Finally...
He nodded once.
"No."
Julian's heartbeat quickened.
"So she changed it."
"Yes."
"What name?"
"I'm not authorized—"
Julian interrupted quietly.
"Please."
The manager studied Julian's face.
He didn't see a billionaire.
He saw a husband desperate for answers.
Lowering his voice, he finally said,
"Her employee file lists her as..."
He glanced at the computer screen.
"...Emma Marino."
Julian stared.
Emma Marino.
A name he'd never heard before.
A life she'd invented.
Why?
As Julian thanked the manager and walked toward the door, another question lingered in his mind.
If Elena had wanted to disappear...
Why choose a luxury hotel owned by one of his business partners?
It was too dangerous.
Too obvious.
Unless...
She hadn't chosen it.
Outside the security office, hidden behind a decorative marble column, someone quietly lowered a phone.
The entire conversation had been recorded.
A gloved hand typed another message.
He knows she's using the name Emma Marino.
The response arrived instantly.
Keep watching.
He must never learn why she disappeared.
The sender attached one final instruction.
If necessary... eliminate the witness.
The screen went dark.
Somewhere inside the Grand Alcazar Hotel...
Someone was no longer trying to keep a secret.
May you like
Someone was preparing to kill for it.
