Chapter 12

Born in the Flames

The warehouse groaned like a dying beast.

Steel beams twisted under the heat.

Wooden crates exploded one after another, sending showers of burning splinters across the floor.

Smoke swallowed the upper offices.

The air itself seemed to burn.

Yet Julian Rossi kept running.

Every instinct screamed at him to turn back.

He ignored every one of them.

There was only one thought in his mind.

Get Elena out.

"Julian!"

Elena's desperate cry echoed through the smoke.

"I'm here!"

He climbed the burning staircase two steps at a time.

Halfway up—

A section of the railing gave way beneath his hand.

He nearly fell through the flames.

Nathan grabbed the back of his jacket just in time.

"You're injured!"

Nathan shouted.

"You'll never make it alone."

Julian pulled free.

"I have to."

He continued upward.

Nathan cursed under his breath before following.

Inside the office, smoke poured through the broken windows.

Elena struggled against the ropes cutting into her wrists.

Every breath became more painful.

The baby's movements had grown frantic.

Almost as if he sensed the danger surrounding them.

Then—

A sharp pain seized her abdomen.

She gasped.

Another followed.

Longer.

Stronger.

She closed her eyes.

"No..."

Not now.

Please...

Warm liquid spread beneath her.

Her heart stopped.

Her water had broken.

She looked down in disbelief.

"No..."

Another contraction ripped through her body.

She cried out.

The pain was unlike anything she had ever imagined.

The baby wasn't waiting anymore.

He was coming.

The office door burst open.

Julian stumbled inside through thick smoke.

"Elena!"

He rushed toward her, ignoring the flames licking across the floor.

One glance told him everything.

The water beneath her feet.

Her trembling body.

The terror in her eyes.

His own face turned pale.

"The baby..."

Elena nodded, tears streaming down her cheeks.

"It's time."

Nathan entered moments later.

He quickly cut the ropes binding Elena's wrists.

"We have to move."

Elena tried to stand.

A violent contraction forced her back to her knees.

She cried out.

"I can't..."

Julian caught her before she fell.

He looked toward Nathan.

"What do we do?"

Nathan glanced at the burning staircase.

Then back at Elena.

His expression darkened.

"She won't make it down."

The truth struck Julian like a hammer.

The fire had already reached the only staircase.

There was no safe way out.

Another explosion shook the warehouse.

The ceiling cracked.

Burning debris crashed into the office.

Nathan spotted an old freight elevator at the far end of the room.

"It's manual."

"I'll see if it still works."

He disappeared into the smoke.

Julian knelt beside Elena.

She gripped his hand so tightly that her nails dug into his skin.

"I'm scared."

He gently wiped soot from her face.

"I know."

"I won't let anything happen to you."

She looked into his eyes.

"And our son?"

Julian smiled through tears.

"We're bringing him home."

Nathan shouted from across the room.

"The elevator's dead!"

His words echoed through the office.

For a brief moment...

No one spoke.

Only the crackling fire answered.

Elena suddenly cried out again.

The contraction nearly doubled her over.

Julian remembered the childbirth classes they had attended years ago.

Back then, they had laughed together, imagining a future that seemed so distant.

Now...

That future had arrived in the middle of an inferno.

Nathan knelt beside them.

"We don't have a choice."

Julian looked at him.

"What are you saying?"

Nathan took a deep breath.

"The baby's coming now."

Julian stared in disbelief.

"Here?"

Nathan nodded.

"If we try to move her..."

"We could lose them both."

Outside the warehouse...

Fire engines screamed into the harbor.

Paramedics rushed to establish a rescue zone.

Firefighters unrolled hoses as flames burst through the roof.

The building had become a blazing furnace.

One commander shouted,

"Anyone still inside?"

A security officer answered,

"Three confirmed."

The commander's face tightened.

"We're running out of time."

Inside...

Julian supported Elena as another contraction came.

"Look at me."

She did.

"Breathe."

She nodded, struggling to follow his voice.

Nathan searched the room and found several clean blankets inside an emergency cabinet.

"They'll have to do."

Smoke thickened around them.

The office windows glowed orange from the flames outside.

The world seemed to be burning away.

Yet in the middle of that chaos...

A new life was fighting to enter it.

Minutes felt like hours.

Elena screamed as another contraction tore through her body.

Julian never let go of her hand.

"You can do this."

She shook her head.

"I can't..."

"You already are."

His voice remained calm despite the fear consuming him.

"You're the strongest woman I've ever known."

A section of the ceiling collapsed nearby.

Nathan shoved a burning beam aside.

"We're almost out of time!"

Julian looked toward the blocked doorway.

There was no escape.

Not yet.

Then...

A tiny cry.

Soft.

Fragile.

Almost lost beneath the roar of the flames.

Nathan smiled for the first time.

"I can see him."

Elena gathered every ounce of strength she had left.

One final push.

One final cry.

Then—

The room filled with the unmistakable sound of a newborn baby crying.

For a heartbeat...

Everything else disappeared.

The fire.

The smoke.

The fear.

There was only that tiny voice.

Julian's tears fell freely.

"Our son..."

Nathan carefully wrapped the baby in a clean blanket.

"Congratulations."

He handed the child to Julian.

"A healthy boy."

Julian looked down.

The baby's tiny fingers instinctively wrapped around one of his own.

His heart broke open.

"Hello, little one."

His voice trembled.

"I'm your father."

Elena smiled weakly through exhausted tears.

"He's beautiful."

Julian gently laid the baby against her chest.

For the first time...

They were together.

Not as fugitives.

Not as victims.

But as a family.

The moment lasted only seconds.

Nathan looked toward the doorway.

"The fire's here."

Flames swept across the corridor.

The office was becoming an oven.

Then—

A loud metallic crash echoed beneath them.

The floor trembled.

Julian looked down.

Giovanni's final words flashed through his mind.

"Below..."

He suddenly understood.

"The basement!"

Nathan frowned.

"What?"

"Giovanni wasn't warning us."

"He was showing us a way out."

Julian dropped to one knee and pulled at the scorched rug beneath the office desk.

Hidden underneath was an old iron hatch.

Almost invisible beneath years of dust.

Nathan grabbed a metal bar and forced it open.

Cold air rushed upward.

A narrow stone tunnel stretched into darkness.

Julian smiled for the first time in days.

"He saved us..."

Even in death...

Giovanni had kept his promise.

Nathan climbed down first.

"It's clear!"

Julian carefully lifted Elena into his arms.

She held their newborn son tightly against her chest.

Behind them, flames swallowed the office.

Seconds later, the ceiling collapsed where they had been standing.

The hatch slammed shut beneath the falling debris.

The tunnel shook violently.

Dust filled the air.

But they kept moving.

Step by step.

Toward the faint light at the far end.

Behind them...

The warehouse disappeared into a mountain of fire.

Ahead of them...

For the first time in eight long months...

May you like

Hope waited.
