Chapter 16 – The Secret in Bridget's Journal

Chapter 16 – The Secret in Bridget's Journal
People often think secrets disappear when they are hidden.
They do not.
They wait.
They settle into old houses.
They remain inside forgotten drawers.
They survive in letters never sent and words never spoken.
A secret does not die because nobody knows it.
Sometimes...
A secret simply waits for the right person to find it.
The Lawson estate had become a place of ghosts.
Every room carried a memory.
The terrace where Bridget fell.
The balcony where Richard hid his truth.
The office where Tyler built his lies.
The house was no longer a symbol of wealth.
It was an archive of everything the Lawson family had tried to bury.
Sarah Chen stood inside Bridget's old bedroom.
The police had searched it before.
But this time was different.
This time, they were not searching for evidence of a crime.
They were searching for a confession.
After Alexander's phone call, Tyler had refused to answer questions.
Not because he wanted to hide.
Because he was afraid of the answer.
Lily was the reason Richard died.
The words haunted everyone.
Especially Bridget.
Before leaving the hospital, Bridget had given Sarah one instruction.
"Find my journal."
Sarah looked around the bedroom.
"Where would you hide something you never wanted anyone to read?"
Detective Michael Grant searched the shelves.
"Somewhere nobody would think to look."
Sarah looked at the family photographs.
Then stopped.
A picture of Bridget and Lily.
Taken when Lily was eight.
Behind the frame was a small scratch.
Almost invisible.
She removed the photograph.
A hidden compartment appeared.
Inside was an old leather journal.
The cover had one word written on it.
Truth.
They opened the journal carefully.
The first pages were ordinary.
Daily thoughts.
Memories of Lily growing up.
Small moments.
First steps.
First words.
First day of school.
Then the entries changed.
September 12
Alexander came again today.
He says Lily belongs to him.
He says blood is everything.
He doesn't understand that love is a choice.
Sarah continued reading.
October 3
Richard says he has a plan.
He believes Alexander can be stopped.
I want to believe him.
But I have seen what Alexander does to people who stand against him.
Grant looked over her shoulder.
"Richard was preparing."
Sarah nodded.
Then they reached the final year before Richard's death.
The handwriting became messier.
The words darker.
March 17
Tyler knows.
He knows Lily is Richard's daughter.
He knows Alexander is not who everyone thinks he is.
Sarah paused.
Another entry.
March 20
Tyler wants to tell Lily everything.
I stopped him.
Grant looked surprised.
"You stopped him?"
Sarah continued.
I told him the truth would not save her.
It would only give Alexander a weapon.
The next pages were torn.
Only pieces remained.
Until the final entry.
The night before Richard died.
I made a terrible mistake.
I thought hiding the truth was protection.
But secrets grow.
They change people.
They create monsters.
Sarah's hand stopped.
Then the final sentence.
Richard did not die because Alexander found out about Lily.
A long pause.
Richard died because Lily found out about Alexander.
The room became silent.
Grant looked at Sarah.
"What does that mean?"
Sarah continued reading.
The next page was missing.
Someone had torn it out.
"Someone removed the explanation."
They searched the journal again.
Inside the back cover was something hidden.
A small envelope.
Inside:
A child's drawing.
A house.
Four people.
A girl.
A woman.
Two men.
On the back, written in children's handwriting:
Daddy said bad people tell stories.
I know the truth.
Sarah looked confused.
"Who wrote this?"
Grant turned the paper over.
A name.
Lily.
They immediately called Bridget.
She answered weakly.
"Sarah?"
"We found your journal."
Silence.
"You found it."
"Bridget..."
Sarah hesitated.
"Why did Lily write that?"
A long pause.
Then Bridget whispered:
"Because she remembered."
Sarah felt a chill.
"Remembered what?"
Bridget's voice broke.
"The night Richard died."
The room became silent.
"She was only six years old."
Bridget continued.
"But children remember more than adults realize."
Bridget revealed the truth.
On the night Richard died, Lily was not asleep.
She saw Alexander arguing with Richard.
She heard them.
She saw Richard collapse.
"But she was too young."
Sarah said.
"Yes."
Bridget replied.
"That is why Alexander never believed she was a threat."
Then Sarah asked the question everyone feared.
"What did Lily see?"
Bridget went quiet.
"She saw Alexander holding something."
"What?"
"A bottle."
Grant looked confused.
"A bottle?"
Bridget whispered:
"Medicine."
The room froze.
Richard's death had been called natural.
But Lily had witnessed something else.
Alexander had poisoned him.
Before Sarah could respond, another message arrived.
From Lily.
I remember now.
Attached was a photograph.
A child's memory.
A drawing of the same bottle.
And beneath it...
A name.
Victoria.
Everyone froze.
Sarah looked at Grant.
"Why would Lily write Victoria's name?"
The answer came seconds later.
A new message.
From Lily.
Victoria was there that night.
The woman in white.
The protector.
The doctor.
The keeper of secrets.
She had been present when Richard died.
But the biggest question remained.
Was Victoria there to help Richard?
Or was she there to make sure he never survived?
Sarah closed Bridget's journal.
The truth was finally emerging.
But with every answer...
Another person became guilty.
And now the investigation had reached the darkest possibility.
Maybe Alexander Vale was not the only monster.
Maybe the person everyone trusted...
May you like
Had been hiding the deepest secret of all.
