Chapter 5 – The Birthday Recording

Chapter 5 – The Birthday Recording

A recording does not care who you are.

It does not care about money.

It does not care about family names.

It does not care how many people believe your story.

A camera has no loyalty.

No fear.

No reason to protect anyone.

It simply watches.

And when the right person finally presses play...

The past speaks for itself.

The hospital room door opened slowly.

Everyone turned.

A nurse entered carrying medication.

The tension immediately broke.

But only for a moment.

Detective Michael Grant exchanged a glance with Sarah Chen.

They both knew the same thing.

Someone had been outside that door.

Someone had been listening.

Bridget noticed their expressions.

"Someone came."

Sarah nodded.

"Yes."

Bridget's face lost what little color remained.

"Then he knows."

Grant stepped closer.

"Who knows?"

Bridget looked at him.

Her eyes were filled with exhaustion.

"Tyler."

The detective studied her carefully.

"Bridget, we need the truth."

She looked toward the rain-covered window.

"I've spent years protecting Lily."

"From who?"

A long pause.

Then:

"From the Lawson name."

Sarah sat beside her.

"You said Lily is your daughter."

Bridget nodded.

"She was born before I met Tyler."

Grant looked surprised.

"Then why hide her?"

"Because the man who fathered her was dangerous."

The room became silent.

Before Bridget could continue, the heart monitor beside her began to rise.

The memories were causing too much stress.

Sarah immediately checked her condition.

"We'll do this slowly."

Bridget closed her eyes.

"There is something you need to see first."

She looked toward her handbag on the table.

"My phone."

A nurse handed it to her.

Bridget unlocked it with trembling fingers.

"There is a video."

"From tonight."

Grant frowned.

"We already have the security footage."

"No."

Bridget shook her head.

"Not from the cameras."

"From Tyler."

Everyone froze.

Bridget found the file.

A video titled:

Birthday Surprise

Created at 6:42 PM.

Sarah looked confused.

"Why would Tyler record himself?"

Bridget gave a bitter smile.

"Because Tyler loved controlling the story."

Grant pressed play.

The video showed Tyler alone inside his office earlier that evening.

He was dressed for the party.

Calm.

Confident.

He spoke directly into the camera.

"Tonight changes everything."

Grant leaned closer.

Tyler continued.

"For years, I have carried this family."

"My father's mistakes."

"My mother's debts."

"My wife's lies."

Bridget looked away.

Tyler smiled.

"People think power comes from money."

"It doesn't."

"It comes from knowing what others are afraid to lose."

Sarah felt uneasy.

The video continued.

Tyler opened a folder.

Inside were documents.

Medical records.

Photographs.

A birth certificate.

He held up one page.

"Lily."

Bridget whispered,

"Oh no..."

Tyler looked directly into the camera.

"I finally found the truth."

The video stopped.

Everyone stared.

The screen had gone black.

Grant looked at Bridget.

"How did you get this?"

"I didn't."

"Then who sent it?"

Bridget swallowed.

"Tyler."

That made no sense.

Sarah understood first.

"He wanted you to see it."

Bridget nodded.

"He wanted me to know he knew."

Grant stood.

"Where is the rest?"

Bridget hesitated.

"I deleted it."

Sarah looked surprised.

"You deleted evidence?"

"No."

Bridget looked at her.

"I moved it."

She unlocked another folder.

Hidden.

Password protected.

Inside were several files.

The first:

Tyler Lawson – Private Archive

The second:

Foundation Transfers

The third:

Lily

Grant opened the third file.

Inside was a photograph.

A young girl.

Six years old.

Standing beside Bridget.

But behind them...

A man had been blurred out.

Grant enlarged the image.

The face became clearer.

Then everyone recognized him.

Tyler.

Sarah looked confused.

"He knew Lily before?"

Bridget shook her head.

"He knew of her."

"Not who she was."

Grant looked at the documents.

The timeline was impossible.

Tyler had discovered Lily's existence years ago.

But why pretend not to know?

Then Sarah noticed something.

A date.

The photograph was taken eleven years earlier.

Before Bridget met Tyler.

She looked at Bridget.

"Who was the man in the background?"

Bridget's hands began shaking.

Before she answered, Grant's phone rang.

It was the forensic lab.

"The camera footage is ready."

They returned to the Lawson estate.

The damaged security camera had finally been restored.

The recovered video played on a large monitor inside the investigation room.

Time stamp:

5:18 PM

Two hours before the party.

The terrace appeared empty.

Then...

A figure entered.

A woman.

Wearing a white coat.

She carried a small black bag.

She walked directly to the railing.

Sarah leaned closer.

"Who is that?"

The woman looked around carefully.

Then removed something from the bag.

A small device.

She attached it beneath the camera.

Grant frowned.

"She disabled the camera."

The woman turned.

Her face became visible.

Bridget gasped.

"No..."

Everyone looked at her.

"Who is she?"

Bridget's voice barely came out.

"Her name is..."

She stopped.

Tears filled her eyes.

The woman on the screen walked toward the edge of the terrace.

She looked down.

Then she smiled.

The recording continued.

Five minutes later...

Tyler Lawson arrived.

But he wasn't alone.

A second person followed him.

Grant paused the footage.

The room froze.

Because the second person was someone they never expected.

Sarah stared at the screen.

"The woman in the white coat..."

She looked at Bridget.

"She's the one who knew about Lily."

Bridget nodded slowly.

"Yes."

Grant pointed at the frozen image.

"And the person with Tyler?"

Bridget closed her eyes.

She whispered:

"That is the person who helped me hide my daughter."

The detective looked confused.

"But if they helped you..."

"Why were they meeting Tyler?"

No one answered.

Because the next frame showed the impossible.

Tyler and the mysterious woman stood together.

Not arguing.

Not fighting.

Working.

Then the woman handed Tyler an envelope.

The same kind Bridget had been carrying.

Sarah stood completely still.

The entire investigation had changed.

They had believed Tyler was the only person with something to hide.

They were wrong.

There was another player.

Someone who had planned for the camera.

Someone who knew Lily's secret.

Someone who had helped Bridget survive...

And someone who may have helped Tyler make her fall.

Grant slowly pressed pause.

The frozen image remained on the screen.

Three people.

One terrace.

One secret.

One unanswered question.

Who was the woman in white?

May you like

And why did she know the truth about Lily before anyone else?
