Chapter 9 – The Doctor's Report

Chapter 9 – The Doctor's Report
A doctor's report is supposed to describe injuries.
Numbers.
Measurements.
Observations.
Facts without emotion.
But sometimes...
A medical record becomes something more.
A witness.
A timeline.
A silent voice from the moment when everyone else was too afraid to speak.
Dr. Evelyn Ross had written thousands of reports during her career.
Broken bones.
Car accidents.
Falls.
Violence.
She had learned one important lesson:
The body remembers what the mind tries to hide.
At 7:30 in the morning, she sat alone in her office reviewing Bridget Lawson's scans.
The hospital was already busy.
Phones rang.
Doctors rushed through hallways.
Families waited anxiously.
But Dr. Ross remained still.
Because something about Bridget's injuries refused to fit the official story.
Detective Michael Grant entered with Sarah Chen.
Dr. Ross looked up.
"I was expecting you."
Grant placed a folder on the desk.
"We need your final report."
Dr. Ross removed her glasses.
"You already know my opinion."
"We need it documented."
She opened the file.
"Bridget Lawson did not fall accidentally."
Sarah nodded.
"We suspected."
Dr. Ross looked at her.
"Suspicion is not enough."
She tapped the report.
"Evidence is."
She turned the monitor toward them.
The first image showed Bridget's spinal injury.
"The pattern of trauma indicates vertical compression."
Grant studied the scan.
"Meaning she landed straight down."
"Yes."
Dr. Ross displayed another image.
"However, the injuries to her wrists and shoulders indicate she was struggling before impact."
Sarah remembered the bruises.
"The grip marks."
Dr. Ross nodded.
"Someone restrained her."
Grant wrote it down.
"Could those injuries happen during the fall?"
"No."
The answer was immediate.
"Impossible."
Silence.
Dr. Ross continued.
"The bruising on her wrist occurred approximately thirty to sixty minutes before emergency treatment."
Grant looked surprised.
"That precise?"
"Medical science is not magic."
She pointed to the color patterns.
"But injuries leave timelines."
Sarah looked at the report.
"So someone grabbed her before she fell."
Dr. Ross nodded.
"And someone grabbed her hard enough to leave evidence."
Grant moved to the next page.
"Anything else?"
Dr. Ross hesitated.
A small hesitation.
But Sarah noticed.
"What?"
The doctor looked uncomfortable.
"There is something unusual."
She brought up another scan.
"Before the fall, Bridget had already suffered trauma."
Grant frowned.
"Before?"
"Yes."
Dr. Ross explained.
"There was a minor injury to her ribs."
"Recent."
"Probably caused earlier that evening."
Sarah looked confused.
"Someone hurt her before the terrace?"
Dr. Ross nodded.
"Yes."
The picture became clearer.
The terrace confrontation was not the beginning.
It was the final moment of something already happening.
Grant looked at Sarah.
"She was attacked twice."
At that moment, Bridget's hospital room door opened.
A nurse entered.
"Detective Grant?"
"Yes?"
"Bridget is asking for Sarah."
They found Bridget awake.
Weak.
But alert.
Sarah sat beside her.
"You need to rest."
Bridget smiled faintly.
"I've rested for years."
Sarah looked at her.
"What does that mean?"
Bridget stared at the ceiling.
"It means I spent years pretending everything was fine."
Grant stood near the window.
"We need answers, Bridget."
She nodded.
"I know."
Sarah gently asked:
"Who hurt you before the fall?"
Bridget looked away.
"Tyler."
Grant immediately focused.
"You said he pushed you."
"No."
She shook her head.
"Not Tyler."
Everyone froze.
"Then who?"
Bridget closed her eyes.
"The man who taught Tyler how to become him."
Grant understood.
"Alexander Vale."
Bridget didn't answer.
She didn't have to.
She told them what happened before the party.
Two days earlier, Alexander returned to the city.
He wanted Lily.
Not money.
Not revenge.
His daughter.
"He told me he had changed."
Bridget laughed quietly.
"He always says that."
Sarah asked:
"Why did you believe he would come after Lily now?"
Bridget looked at her.
"Because Lily found out."
The room became silent.
"Found out what?"
Bridget's eyes filled with tears.
"Who she really is."
Meanwhile, Tyler Lawson sat alone in an interrogation room.
No lawyers.
No statements.
Just silence.
Detective Grant entered.
Tyler looked up.
"Did she survive?"
Grant noticed the first question.
Not:
"Am I in trouble?"
Not:
"What evidence do you have?"
Only:
"Did she survive?"
"Yes."
Tyler closed his eyes briefly.
Relief.
Real relief.
Grant sat down.
"Why did you push her?"
Tyler said nothing.
"You know we have the medical report."
Still nothing.
Grant placed a photograph on the table.
Evelyn's photograph.
The shadow figure.
"You were not alone on that terrace."
For the first time...
Tyler looked afraid.
"Where did you get that?"
Grant noticed.
Not denial.
Recognition.
"Who is the person behind you?"
Tyler looked at the photograph.
Then whispered:
"You don't understand."
"Help me understand."
Tyler leaned back.
His voice became quieter.
"That person wasn't there to hurt Bridget."
Grant waited.
"They were there to make sure I did."
Silence.
The detective stared at him.
"What does that mean?"
Tyler looked toward the one-way mirror.
Then back at Grant.
"Alexander Vale didn't come back for Lily."
A pause.
"He came back because he knew Bridget had the evidence that could destroy him."
Grant leaned forward.
"What evidence?"
Tyler looked exhausted.
"The original foundation records."
"The missing money?"
Tyler nodded.
"But not just that."
He whispered:
"The money was only a small part."
Grant waited.
"The Lawson Foundation was never a charity."
The room went cold.
"It was a machine."
"For what?"
Tyler looked directly at him.
"A way to buy people."
At that exact moment, alarms sounded outside.
A nurse rushed past the interrogation room.
Then another.
Grant opened the door.
"What happened?"
The nurse looked terrified.
"Someone entered Bridget Lawson's room."
Sarah appeared in the hallway.
Her face was pale.
"What?"
"She was given an injection."
Grant ran.
When they reached Bridget's room, the monitor was screaming.
Doctors surrounded her.
Sarah pushed forward.
"Bridget!"
The patient was unconscious.
On the table beside her...
A folded piece of paper.
Sarah picked it up.
Only four words were written.
Stop digging. Or Lily dies.
Grant looked at Tyler.
Tyler looked at the message.
And for the first time...
Everyone understood.
The fall from the terrace was never the real attack.
May you like
It was only the beginning.
