Chapter 4 – Footprints in the Rain

Chapter 4 – Footprints in the Rain

Rain has a strange way of revealing the truth.

When the ground is dry, people can walk away from their mistakes.

Footsteps disappear.

Tires leave no trace.

Secrets remain buried.

But when rain falls...

The earth remembers.

Every step.

Every hesitation.

Every person who stood somewhere they were never supposed to be.

The storm arrived shortly after midnight.

By morning, the Lawson estate looked completely different.

The golden lights were gone.

The music had stopped.

The laughter had disappeared.

Only rain remained.

Heavy.

Relentless.

Washing over the gardens where a birthday celebration had become a criminal investigation.

Detective Michael Grant stood beneath an umbrella near the northern terrace.

He stared at the ground.

Not at the blood.

Not at the broken champagne glasses.

Not even at the damaged camera.

He stared at the mud.

Because the rain had done something unexpected.

It had preserved the one thing Tyler Lawson thought no one would ever see.

A trail.

Officer Emily Brooks approached carrying a forensic kit.

"You were right to wait."

Grant looked at her.

"About what?"

"The weather."

She pointed toward the garden.

"The rain softened the soil before anyone had time to clean anything."

Grant glanced toward the terrace.

"Show me."

They walked behind the estate toward a narrow garden path hidden by tall hedges.

Most guests had never noticed it.

It was rarely used.

The path connected the main house to the lower service entrance.

Brooks stopped.

"There."

At first, Grant saw nothing.

Then the lightning flashed.

And the marks became obvious.

Footprints.

Deep impressions in the wet earth.

Someone had walked through the garden shortly before the fall.

Brooks photographed the trail.

"Two different shoe patterns."

Grant crouched.

"Tyler's?"

"No."

She pointed to the first set.

"These are men's dress shoes."

Then the second.

"Smaller."

"A woman's?"

"Possibly."

Grant followed the prints with his eyes.

The larger footprints moved toward the terrace.

The smaller ones moved away.

He frowned.

"Someone else was here."

Sarah Chen arrived moments later.

She had returned to the estate after receiving a call from Grant.

She looked at the footprints.

Her expression changed immediately.

"The second person."

Grant nodded.

"Was already on the terrace."

Sarah remembered Ramirez's message.

The camera had captured someone arriving before the party began.

Someone nobody had noticed.

The three of them followed the smaller footprints.

They curved behind the garden wall.

Then stopped.

Not naturally.

Stopped.

As if the person had suddenly disappeared.

Brooks examined the area.

"There should be more."

Grant looked around.

"Unless they got into a vehicle."

She shook her head.

"No tire marks."

Sarah looked toward the old stone wall.

"Not a vehicle."

She walked closer.

"The wall."

Hidden beneath ivy was a small wooden gate.

Nearly invisible.

The lock was broken.

Freshly.

Grant opened it carefully.

Beyond it was an abandoned greenhouse.

The Lawson family had stopped using it years ago.

Inside...

The ground was dry.

No rain.

No footprints.

Brooks searched the entrance.

"Someone came through here recently."

She held up a small object.

A torn piece of black fabric.

Sarah immediately recognized it.

"Tyler's jacket."

Grant looked at her.

"You're sure?"

"I saw him wearing it."

For a moment, everyone was silent.

The evidence was beginning to create a picture.

But the picture still had missing pieces.

Inside the greenhouse, forensic teams searched every corner.

Behind broken flower pots.

Under old shelves.

Inside storage cabinets.

Then one technician called out.

"Detective!"

Grant walked over.

The technician held a small plastic bag.

Inside was a key.

A simple silver key.

Attached was a label.

L-17

Sarah frowned.

"Lily."

Everyone looked at her.

She explained.

"Bridget mentioned Lily before she lost consciousness."

"My daughter."

"She was afraid Tyler would find her."

Grant studied the key.

"The question is..."

"What does it open?"

Before they could answer, Tyler Lawson appeared at the greenhouse entrance.

Two officers immediately stepped between him and the investigators.

"What are you doing here?"

Grant asked.

Tyler looked annoyed.

"I own this property."

"Not anymore."

Grant held up a hand.

"You're being investigated."

Tyler's eyes moved toward the key.

Only for a second.

But Sarah noticed.

The same calculation.

The same fear.

"You know what that key opens."

It wasn't a question.

Tyler smiled coldly.

"You have no idea what you're talking about."

Sarah stepped forward.

"No."

She looked directly at him.

"We know exactly what we're talking about."

"You didn't panic when Bridget fell."

"You panicked when she mentioned Lily."

Tyler's face tightened.

Grant continued.

"Who is Lily Lawson?"

Tyler said nothing.

The silence answered for him.

Later that morning, investigators searched the Lawson residence with a warrant.

They found no missing money.

No hidden accounts.

No murder weapon.

Nothing obvious.

Tyler had been careful.

Very careful.

Then Sarah noticed something.

A family photograph on the fireplace.

Tyler.

Bridget.

A young girl.

But the girl had been cut out.

Only a torn edge remained.

She called Grant.

"Detective."

"What?"

"I think we have the wrong question."

Grant looked at the photograph.

"What do you mean?"

"We've been asking what Tyler did to Bridget."

She turned the picture around.

"Maybe we should ask..."

"...what Tyler did to Lily."

The search expanded.

School records.

Medical documents.

Birth certificates.

Everything connected to Lily Lawson.

And slowly...

A disturbing truth appeared.

Lily Lawson had never been officially adopted.

Her birth records had been sealed.

Her school history began at age six.

Her entire identity had been carefully constructed.

Grant stared at the file.

"Who is she?"

Before anyone could answer, Sarah's phone rang.

It was the hospital.

Bridget had awakened.

They rushed back to St. Catherine's.

Bridget looked weaker.

But conscious.

Sarah sat beside her.

"Bridget."

"We need to know about Lily."

The woman's expression changed instantly.

Fear.

Not confusion.

Not surprise.

Fear.

"You found the key."

Sarah nodded.

Bridget closed her eyes.

"I hoped I would have more time."

Grant leaned closer.

"Time for what?"

Bridget looked toward the window.

Rain streamed down the glass.

Then she whispered:

"Lily isn't Tyler's daughter."

The room went silent.

Sarah held her breath.

"Whose daughter is she?"

Bridget looked at them.

And the answer was one nobody expected.

"Mine."

Grant frowned.

"That doesn't make sense."

Bridget's eyes filled with tears.

"Because Tyler doesn't know the truth."

Sarah stepped closer.

"Then who does?"

Bridget looked toward the door.

Her voice dropped to a whisper.

"The person who helped me hide her."

A shadow moved outside the hospital room.

Someone had been listening.

Someone who now knew they had been discovered.

The door handle slowly turned.

Everyone looked toward it.

And Sarah realized something terrifying.

The footprints in the rain had not led them to the person who pushed Bridget.

May you like

They had led them to the person who had been protecting Bridget's biggest secret.
