Chapter 6 – The Missing Champagne Glass

Chapter 6 – The Missing Champagne Glass

The smallest things often carry the heaviest truths.

A fingerprint.

A torn thread.

A forgotten message.

A glass left behind after a celebration.

People look for dramatic evidence because they expect crimes to announce themselves.

They rarely do.

The truth usually hides in ordinary places.

Among the things everyone else considers meaningless.

The investigation room at the Lawson estate remained silent long after midnight.

The birthday decorations were still hanging.

The flowers were still arranged.

The half-empty champagne bottles still stood on the tables.

A celebration frozen in time.

Except now every object had a question attached to it.

Every chair.

Every plate.

Every glass.

Detective Michael Grant replayed the recovered footage again.

Tyler.

The woman in white.

The envelope.

The terrace.

The impossible meeting.

He stopped the video at the exact moment the woman handed Tyler the documents.

"She knew about Lily."

Sarah Chen stood beside him.

"Before Bridget's fall."

Grant nodded.

"And before Tyler confronted Bridget."

Sarah looked toward the evidence table.

"Then Bridget wasn't the first person targeted tonight."

The evidence technician, Nina Alvarez, entered carrying a sealed container.

"Detective."

Grant turned.

"What did you find?"

She placed the container down.

"Something missing."

Grant frowned.

"Missing?"

Nina nodded.

"That's the problem."

She opened the inventory report from the party.

"One hundred and twenty guests."

"One hundred and forty champagne glasses prepared."

"One hundred and thirty-nine recovered."

Sarah looked at her.

"One glass."

"Missing."

Grant stared at the report.

"Someone stole a champagne glass?"

Nina shook her head.

"No."

"Someone removed one."

She showed them photographs of the terrace before the guests arrived.

On the table near the railing were four champagne glasses.

After the incident...

Only three remained.

Sarah immediately understood.

"The glass was there before Bridget fell."

Nina nodded.

"And whoever removed it knew exactly what they were looking for."

Grant picked up the evidence photos.

"What was special about that glass?"

Nina placed another report beside him.

"Fingerprints."

Everyone became silent.

"Most glasses at a party are useless," Nina explained.

"Too many people touch them."

"But this one..."

She pointed to the missing item.

"...was placed separately."

Sarah looked confused.

"Why?"

"Because Bridget's name was engraved on it."

Grant looked up.

"Personalized?"

Nina nodded.

"Tyler ordered a set for the anniversary of their wedding."

Sarah remembered something.

"Bridget was holding a glass when she spoke to Tyler."

Grant turned.

"You saw it?"

"No."

Sarah paused.

"But I remember the sound."

"The sound?"

"When I arrived after the fall, broken glass was everywhere."

She looked toward the terrace.

"But Bridget's hands were empty."

Grant slowly realized.

"The glass disappeared before she fell."

At the hospital, Bridget was awake.

Grant and Sarah returned to speak with her.

This time, they asked about the glass.

The moment they mentioned it...

Her expression changed.

"You saw it?"

Sarah nodded.

"Tell us why it matters."

Bridget looked exhausted.

"Because Tyler put something inside it."

Grant leaned forward.

"What?"

"A recording device."

Silence.

Sarah frowned.

"Why would he put a recorder in your champagne glass?"

Bridget looked away.

"Because Tyler never trusted anyone."

She explained.

Months earlier, Tyler had become obsessed with controlling every conversation around him.

He believed people were always plotting against him.

So he recorded meetings.

Phone calls.

Private discussions.

Even family conversations.

Grant looked surprised.

"Your husband was spying on you?"

Bridget gave a bitter laugh.

"He was spying on everyone."

Sarah thought about the video.

Tyler had recorded himself.

He liked documenting things.

Keeping proof.

Creating insurance.

"Then the missing glass contains something important."

Bridget nodded.

"If someone removed it..."

"They didn't want what was recorded to be found."

Back at the estate, the search expanded.

Every guest was questioned again.

Who saw the glass?

Who touched it?

Who removed it?

One name kept appearing.

The same person.

The woman in white.

The guest list revealed her identity.

Dr. Victoria Hale.

A private physician.

A medical consultant.

And...

The woman who had treated Lily years earlier.

Grant stared at the file.

"She was Lily's doctor?"

Sarah nodded.

"And she was the only person outside the family who knew Bridget had a daughter."

They searched Victoria's office.

Nothing.

Her home.

Nothing.

Her car.

Nothing.

She had disappeared.

Then Nina called.

"We found the glass."

Everyone rushed back to the estate.

The missing champagne glass had been discovered beneath the old greenhouse floor.

Hidden inside a loose wooden panel.

Grant carefully examined it.

"Why hide it here?"

Sarah answered.

"Because whoever took it knew this place existed."

The glass was sent to the lab.

Hours passed.

Then the results arrived.

The fingerprints belonged to three people.

Bridget Lawson.

Tyler Lawson.

And...

Victoria Hale.

Grant stared at the report.

"All three touched it."

Sarah shook her head.

"That's not the important part."

She pointed to the final line.

Audio storage device detected inside glass stem.

They carefully extracted the tiny recorder.

The device was damaged.

But not destroyed.

The first recording played.

Static.

Then voices.

Tyler.

And Victoria.

Tyler's voice was quiet.

"She knows."

Victoria answered.

"Then you need to move faster."

A pause.

Tyler:

"What about Lily?"

Victoria:

"She cannot know the truth."

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Grant replayed it.

Again.

And again.

Sarah looked at the screen showing Victoria's photograph.

"The doctor wasn't protecting Bridget."

Grant nodded slowly.

"She was protecting the secret."

"But whose secret?"

Before they could continue, another audio fragment suddenly activated.

A damaged section restored itself.

A woman's voice emerged.

Not Victoria.

Not Bridget.

Someone else.

A young girl.

Lily.

Her voice was faint.

But clear enough.

"Mom..."

"Why did you tell everyone I was gone?"

Sarah froze.

Grant looked at her.

The impossible had become reality.

Lily had known.

She had known something was wrong.

The recording continued.

Then a man's voice interrupted.

Tyler.

"You don't understand what your mother did."

A pause.

Then Lily whispered:

"She wasn't hiding me from you..."

The room went completely silent.

"She was hiding me from him."

The recording stopped.

Sarah looked at Grant.

"Who is him?"

No one answered.

Because the missing champagne glass had revealed the truth they were not prepared to face.

Tyler Lawson was not the only person Bridget feared.

And the woman in white was not the only person keeping secrets.

There was another man.

Someone connected to Lily's past.

May you like

Someone whose identity could destroy everything the Lawson family had built.
