Chapter 5 — The Housekeeper's Secret

Chapter 5 — The Housekeeper's Secret

Elena had spent eleven years learning how to disappear.

That was what wealthy households taught servants without ever saying the words aloud.

Walk quietly.

Speak only when spoken to.

Never ask why a locked door was locked.

Never mention the conversations you overheard.

And above all—

never interfere with family matters.

But Elena had broken that rule once.

Eleven years ago.

And the woman she had tried to save had vanished.

Now she sat across from Daniel in a private conference room, staring at the photograph on the table.

The woman in the photograph was young.

Dark hair.

A small smile.

A silver necklace around her throat.

Her name was Catherine Vale.

Elena's hands began to shake.

Daniel noticed.

“You know her.”

Elena looked down.

“Yes.”

“How?”

Her lips trembled.

“Because I was there the night she disappeared.”

The Night Eleven Years Ago

Daniel said nothing.

He allowed Elena to speak.

For years, she had carried the memory alone.

Now she finally opened the door.

“It was raining.”

Her voice was barely audible.

“Almost exactly like tonight.”

She stared at Catherine's photograph.

“Michael had been angry all evening.”

“Why?”

“Catherine had found something.”

“What?”

“Money.”

Daniel leaned forward.

“How much?”

Elena shook her head.

“It wasn't about the amount.”

She took a breath.

“She discovered that Michael wasn't the owner of several accounts.”

Daniel frowned.

“Then who was?”

Elena looked toward the closed door.

“I don't know.”

“Try.”

“I never saw the name.”

“Why?”

“Because Michael took the papers before I could read them.”

Daniel waited.

Elena continued.

“But I heard him say one thing.”

“What?”

“‘If she talks, everyone goes down.’”

Catherine's Fear

Elena remembered Catherine differently from the photographs.

Not as the confident woman smiling beside Michael.

But as someone terrified.

“She came into the kitchen around midnight.”

Elena had been washing dishes.

Catherine stood in the doorway.

Her hair was wet from the rain.

Her hands were trembling.

She whispered:

“Elena, I need your help.”

“What did you say?”

“I asked what happened.”

“She said Michael was going to kill her.”

Daniel's expression hardened.

“Did she explain why?”

“She showed me a flash drive.”

Elena closed her eyes.

“She said it contained proof.”

“Proof of what?”

“Fraud.”

“Only fraud?”

“No.”

She looked at him.

“Murder.”

Daniel went completely still.

The First Victim

Elena had never forgotten Catherine's next words.

“There was another woman.”

“Who?”

“She worked for Michael.”

“What happened to her?”

“She discovered the same accounts.”

“And?”

“She disappeared.”

Daniel's voice became quieter.

“Was she killed?”

“I don't know.”

Elena looked at the photograph.

“But Catherine believed she was.”

“Why?”

“Because she found blood in Michael's garage.”

Daniel stared.

“Did she report it?”

“She tried.”

“What happened?”

Elena laughed bitterly.

“She called the police.”

“And?”

“Two officers arrived.”

“Then?”

“Michael spoke to them privately.”

Daniel understood.

“They left.”

Elena nodded.

“And the next morning, Catherine was gone.”

The Locked Garage

Daniel asked:

“Did you see the garage that night?”

“Yes.”

“What happened?”

Elena hesitated.

“I shouldn't have gone there.”

“But you did.”

“Yes.”

She closed her eyes.

“I heard shouting.”

“Whose?”

“Catherine's.”

Elena remembered running through the corridor.

She remembered the garage door.

She remembered seeing Michael standing beside his car.

Catherine was on the floor.

She was alive.

Barely.

Michael was holding something.

A metal pipe.

Elena had hidden behind a wall.

Michael bent toward Catherine.

He said:

“You should have listened.”

Catherine answered:

“Someone will find out.”

Michael smiled.

“Who?”

Then he struck the floor beside her.

Not her.

Just beside her.

Enough to frighten her.

Elena had almost screamed.

Then someone entered the garage.

A second man.

Elena couldn't see his face.

But she heard him say:

“It's time.”

Michael stepped aside.

Catherine looked at the man.

And screamed.

The Man in the Shadows

Daniel asked:

“Did you recognize him?”

“No.”

“Voice?”

Elena shook her head.

“I couldn't.”

“But you've heard him since?”

She nodded.

“Several times.”

Daniel leaned closer.

“Where?”

“At the mansion.”

“When?”

“After Catherine disappeared.”

Elena's face became pale.

“He kept coming.”

“How often?”

“Once a month.”

“Why?”

“I don't know.”

“What did he look like?”

“Tall.”

“Age?”

“Maybe fifty.”

“Anything distinctive?”

Elena thought.

“A ring.”

“What kind?”

“Black stone.”

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

“Did Michael have one?”

“No.”

“Did Victoria?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

Elena looked at him.

“I think you know.”

Daniel frowned.

“No.”

Elena reached into her handbag.

She removed an old photograph.

She placed it on the table.

Daniel looked at it.

Then his expression changed.

The man standing beside Michael was wearing a black stone ring.

Daniel recognized him.

He had seen him before.

Recently.

The Man Who Helped Daniel

Daniel stared at the photograph.

“No.”

Elena nodded.

“Yes.”

“That's impossible.”

“I know.”

Daniel stood.

The man in the photograph was Richard Hale.

Daniel's former mentor.

The man who had supposedly helped Daniel survive the warehouse fire twelve years ago.

The man who had helped him disappear.

The man Daniel had trusted with his life.

Richard had told him Michael was behind the attack.

Richard had helped Daniel escape.

Richard had given him money.

Richard had helped him build a new identity.

And all these years—

Richard had been working with Michael.

Daniel sat down slowly.

Elena whispered:

“He wasn't helping you escape.”

Daniel looked at her.

“He was making sure you stayed hidden.”

The Lie

Daniel couldn't breathe.

“What did he gain?”

Elena shook her head.

“I don't know.”

“Why help Michael?”

“Because Michael paid him.”

“With what?”

“Money.”

“That's not enough.”

Elena looked at Catherine's photograph.

“Power.”

Daniel understood.

Richard wasn't a servant.

He wasn't merely an accomplice.

He was connected to the network.

The same network that had controlled Michael.

The same network Victoria had discovered.

The same network that had been watching Mia.

Daniel's phone suddenly vibrated.

A message appeared.

STOP ASKING ELENA QUESTIONS.

Daniel stared.

A second message arrived.

YOU'VE ALREADY LOST ONE FAMILY.

His blood ran cold.

Elena saw the screen.

“They know.”

Daniel stood.

“Everyone out.”

Elena's Final Secret

But Elena grabbed his arm.

“There is something else.”

Daniel turned.

“What?”

“I lied.”

“About what?”

“The night Catherine disappeared.”

Daniel waited.

Elena's eyes filled with tears.

“I said I didn't know what happened to her.”

“You did.”

“I lied.”

“Why?”

“Because she came back.”

Daniel froze.

“What?”

“Catherine came back.”

“When?”

“Three days after she disappeared.”

Daniel stared at her.

“Where?”

“The mansion.”

“Why?”

“To get something.”

“What?”

“The flash drive.”

“Did she find it?”

“No.”

“Who had it?”

Elena whispered:

“Victoria.”

Victoria Knew

Daniel's mind raced.

“Victoria knew Catherine?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“Catherine contacted her.”

“Before or after the disappearance?”

“After.”

“Why?”

“She trusted Victoria.”

“What did she tell her?”

Elena shook her head.

“I don't know everything.”

“But?”

“But I heard them talking.”

“What did they say?”

Elena looked toward the hallway.

“Catherine told Victoria that Michael wasn't the real threat.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Who was?”

“She wouldn't say.”

“Why?”

“Because she believed the walls were listening.”

Daniel glanced toward the ceiling.

He suddenly remembered the cameras.

Elena continued.

“She told Victoria to find the account.”

“Which account?”

“The account belonging to the first victim.”

Daniel's eyes widened.

“What's her name?”

Elena looked at him.

“Grace Morgan.”

Grace Morgan

Daniel had heard the name.

Years ago.

A financial analyst.

Missing.

Declared dead after an unidentified body was found.

The case had been closed.

Daniel had never connected her to Michael.

Now everything made sense.

Grace had discovered the hidden accounts.

She had threatened to expose them.

Then she disappeared.

Catherine had investigated.

Then Catherine disappeared.

Victoria had discovered Catherine's evidence.

Then Michael tried to kill Victoria.

Daniel stared at the chain.

Three women.

Three attempts to silence them.

And behind all three—

the same network.

Elena whispered:

“Grace wasn't Michael's victim.”

Daniel looked at her.

“Then whose was she?”

Elena shook her head.

“She was the first person to discover the truth.”

The Box Under the Floor

Elena stood.

“I have something.”

She led Daniel to an old storage room.

The police had searched it before.

But Elena moved a wooden crate.

Underneath was a loose floorboard.

She lifted it.

Inside was a small metal box.

Daniel stared.

“You kept this?”

“I was afraid to destroy it.”

“What is it?”

“Catherine gave it to me.”

“When?”

“The last time I saw her.”

Daniel opened the box.

Inside was a key.

A photograph.

And a folded piece of paper.

He opened it.

Three words were written in Catherine's handwriting:

TRUST NO ONE.

Beneath them was a name.

RICHARD HALE.

Daniel's hands went cold.

The Truth Elena Had Carried

Elena began crying.

“I wanted to tell you years ago.”

“Why didn't you?”

“Because Richard found me.”

Daniel looked up.

“What did he do?”

“He threatened my son.”

Daniel's expression hardened.

“He knew about your family?”

“Yes.”

“He told me if I spoke, my son would disappear.”

Elena wiped her tears.

“So I stayed silent.”

Daniel's voice softened.

“You protected him.”

“I thought I did.”

“What happened?”

Elena looked away.

“My son died two years later.”

Daniel went silent.

“He was driving home.”

“A car hit him.”

“You think it wasn't an accident.”

Elena shook her head.

“I know it wasn't.”

Daniel stared at her.

“Why?”

“Because before the crash, my son called me.”

“What did he say?”

“He said someone was following him.”

Daniel's face hardened.

“Did the police investigate?”

“They called it an accident.”

“Of course.”

Elena looked at him.

“That was when I understood.”

“What?”

“That the people Michael worked for were much more powerful than I had imagined.”

The Recording

Daniel took out his phone.

“Do you still have anything from that night?”

Elena hesitated.

“Yes.”

She reached into her handbag.

A tiny cassette recorder.

Daniel stared.

“You kept it?”

“I couldn't destroy it.”

“Why?”

“Because I was afraid someday I'd need proof.”

She pressed play.

Static.

Then Catherine's voice.

“If anything happens to me, give this to Victoria.”

Michael's voice followed.

“You think Victoria can save you?”

Catherine answered:

“No.”

A pause.

“She can't.”

Michael asked:

“Then why her?”

Catherine whispered:

“Because she's the only one you actually love.”

Michael laughed.

“You're wrong.”

Catherine answered:

“No.”

Her voice became stronger.

“That's why you'll never be able to kill her.”

The recording ended.

Daniel stared at Elena.

“Where was this recorded?”

“In the garage.”

“When?”

“The night Catherine disappeared.”

Daniel rewound it.

Then he heard something he hadn't noticed.

A third voice.

Very faint.

“Michael.”

Daniel froze.

He enhanced the audio.

The voice became clearer.

“Michael, finish this.”

Daniel knew the voice.

He had heard it recently.

Richard.

The Final Message

Daniel stood.

“We need to find Richard.”

Elena shook her head.

“It's too late.”

“What?”

“He knows.”

Daniel's phone vibrated.

Another message.

THANK YOU FOR FINDING THE BOX.

Daniel's eyes widened.

A second message:

NOW YOU UNDERSTAND WHY ELENA NEVER SPOKE.

Then a photograph appeared.

Elena's son.

Standing beside a car.

Taken minutes before his death.

Elena screamed.

Daniel immediately looked toward the window.

A black vehicle was parked across the street.

The engine was running.

Then it drove away.

Daniel ran outside.

Too late.

He returned moments later.

Elena was still crying.

Daniel looked at the photograph.

The timestamp was from twelve years ago.

But there was something else.

In the reflection of the car window—

Richard Hale was visible.

And beside him stood Michael.

Both men were smiling.

Daniel stared at the image.

Michael hadn't acted alone.

Richard hadn't merely helped him.

They had been working together from the beginning.

And now Elena's secret had revealed something even more terrifying:

Catherine had survived her disappearance.

She had returned to the mansion.

She had contacted Victoria.

And someone had known exactly where she was.

Daniel looked at Elena.

“Where is Catherine now?”

Elena slowly shook her head.

“I don't know.”

Then she whispered:

“But I know where she was supposed to go.”

“Where?”

Elena looked toward the door.

“The old chapel.”

Daniel frowned.

“Why?”

“Because Catherine told me that if she ever disappeared again…”

She swallowed.

“…the only person she would trust to find her would be you.”

Daniel stared at her.

“You're saying Catherine expected me to survive.”

Elena nodded.

“No.”

She looked terrified.

“She expected you to come back.”

Outside, thunder rolled across the sky.

And somewhere in the city, a woman who had been declared dead twelve years ago opened an old wooden box.

Inside was a photograph of Daniel.

On the back, she had written:

HE DOESN'T KNOW THE WORST PART YET.

May you like

Then she picked up the phone.

And called him.
