Chapter 3 — Victoria Was Still Alive

Chapter 3 — Victoria Was Still Alive

The mansion had gone silent.

Not peaceful.

Silent in the way a house becomes silent after something terrible has happened inside it.

Broken glass covered the marble floor.

A silver sequin from Victoria's dress glittered beneath the chandelier.

The fire poker lay several feet away.

And Victoria wasn't moving.

Michael had been taken outside by the police.

Daniel was speaking to an officer near the front entrance.

Mia was sitting on the bottom step of the staircase, clutching her little recorder against her chest.

Elena stood alone beside the shattered display cabinet.

She stared at Victoria.

Something didn't feel right.

Everyone was saying the same thing.

She was dead.

But Elena had spent twenty years working in wealthy homes.

She had learned one important lesson:

Never assume someone is dead simply because they aren't moving.

She slowly walked closer.

“Mrs. Carter?”

Nothing.

Elena knelt.

She placed two fingers against Victoria's neck.

At first—

nothing.

Then she felt it.

A tiny pulse.

Weak.

Irregular.

But unmistakable.

Elena's eyes widened.

“Oh, my God.”

Victoria was alive.

The Second Michael Comes Back

Elena looked toward the entrance.

Police officers were everywhere.

Daniel was outside.

Michael was supposedly being taken away.

But Elena remembered the look on Michael's face when he learned Victoria was breathing.

That wasn't the expression of a man who had failed.

It was the expression of a man who had realized he had unfinished business.

Elena had seen that look before.

She knew exactly what it meant.

If Michael discovered Victoria was alive, he would come back.

And next time, he wouldn't leave anything unfinished.

Elena grabbed a clean towel from a nearby table.

She pressed it gently against Victoria's head.

“Stay with me.”

Victoria's eyelids moved.

Elena leaned closer.

“Mrs. Carter?”

A faint whisper escaped her lips.

“Mia…”

“She is safe.”

Victoria tried to move.

Pain crossed her face.

“Mia…”

“She is with Daniel.”

Victoria's eyes opened slightly.

“Daniel?”

“Yes.”

A tear slipped down her cheek.

“Thank God.”

Then her eyes closed again.

Elena stood.

She needed help.

Immediately.

The Secret Passage

The police were focused on Michael.

They were asking questions.

Photographing the scene.

Collecting evidence.

No one noticed Elena pushing the old serving cart toward the hallway.

No one noticed her glance at the hidden door beneath the staircase.

She knew this mansion better than anyone.

She had cleaned every room.

Every corridor.

Every storage area.

She knew where Michael kept his valuables.

She knew which doors were fake.

And she knew about the old servants' passage.

The passage had been built decades earlier.

It connected the kitchen to the garage.

Michael had never used it.

He had forgotten it existed.

Elena hadn't.

She returned to Victoria.

“Mia is safe,” she whispered.

Victoria opened her eyes.

“Take me…”

“Where?”

“Somewhere he can't find me.”

Elena nodded.

“I know a place.”

The Hidden Room

Elena and Daniel moved Victoria through the kitchen while the officers were still questioning Michael's security team.

Daniel stopped when he saw them.

“What happened?”

“She's alive.”

Daniel stared.

“Are you sure?”

“I felt her pulse.”

He immediately crouched beside Victoria.

“Victoria?”

Her eyes opened.

“Daniel.”

He took a breath.

“We're getting you out.”

Victoria grabbed his sleeve.

“No hospital.”

Daniel frowned.

“You need medical attention.”

“I know.”

“Then we're going.”

“Not yet.”

Her voice was weak.

“But—”

“If Michael knows I'm alive…”

Daniel understood.

“He'll try again.”

Victoria nodded.

Elena looked at Daniel.

“There is a safe room.”

Daniel looked surprised.

“Where?”

“Under the servants' quarters.”

“Is it secure?”

Elena nodded.

“Michael doesn't know about it.”

Daniel looked at Victoria.

“Can you walk?”

“No.”

“Then we'll carry you.”

The Servant's Passage

Elena opened a narrow wooden panel behind the kitchen pantry.

A dark passage appeared.

Mia followed.

Daniel looked at her.

“You stay here.”

“No.”

“Mia.”

“I know the way.”

Daniel hesitated.

She pointed into the darkness.

“There are stairs.”

“How do you know?”

“Mom showed me.”

Victoria closed her eyes.

Daniel looked at her.

“You knew about this?”

Victoria whispered:

“I built it into our escape plan.”

Elena stared.

“You planned for this?”

Victoria nodded.

“I knew Michael would eventually try to hurt me.”

Daniel's jaw tightened.

“You should have told me.”

“I tried.”

“No.”

His voice broke.

“You should have told me everything.”

Victoria looked at him.

“I was trying to protect Mia.”

Daniel's anger disappeared.

He understood.

Everyone had been trying to protect the little girl.

Everyone except Michael.

The Safe Room

The passage opened beneath an abandoned laundry room.

Elena moved an old cabinet.

Behind it was a steel door.

She entered a code.

The door opened.

Inside was a small room.

Medical supplies.

Bottled water.

Blankets.

A generator.

Two radios.

And a second emergency exit.

Daniel stared.

“Who built this?”

Elena answered:

“Michael's grandfather.”

“Why?”

“To protect the family.”

Victoria gave a weak laugh.

“He built it to protect himself.”

Daniel looked at her.

“What do you mean?”

Victoria swallowed.

“This mansion has been hiding secrets for generations.”

Elena helped her onto the bed.

Victoria closed her eyes.

“Some of them are worse than Michael.”

The Doctor

Daniel called a doctor he trusted.

Not the family physician.

Not anyone connected to Michael.

A private emergency doctor arrived forty minutes later.

She examined Victoria.

“She has a concussion.”

Daniel looked concerned.

“Will she survive?”

“If she rests and receives proper treatment, yes.”

Victoria opened her eyes.

“How long?”

“Several days at minimum.”

Victoria shook her head.

“I don't have several days.”

The doctor looked at Daniel.

“She needs rest.”

Victoria looked toward Mia.

Mia sat quietly in the corner.

Her eyes were fixed on her mother.

“I'm fine,” Mia whispered.

Victoria smiled.

“No, sweetheart.”

She reached out.

“Come here.”

Mia climbed onto the bed carefully.

Victoria touched her daughter's hair.

“You were very brave.”

Mia began crying.

“I was scared.”

“I know.”

“I thought you were dead.”

Victoria pulled her closer.

“So did I.”

Mia buried her face against her mother's chest.

For several seconds, no one spoke.

What Mia Had Recorded

Daniel looked at the recorder.

“You said you recorded everything.”

Mia nodded.

“How long?”

“Since Christmas.”

Daniel stared.

“That long?”

Mia nodded.

“Mom told me to keep it hidden.”

Victoria looked at him.

“I knew Michael was watching me.”

“Why didn't you leave?”

“He controlled the accounts.”

“He controlled the security.”

“He controlled the staff.”

“And he threatened Mia.”

Daniel's hands tightened.

“What did he threaten to do?”

Victoria looked away.

“He said if I ever tried to leave, he would make sure I never saw her again.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

The pieces were coming together.

Michael hadn't simply attacked Victoria.

He had built an entire system around her.

Control.

Fear.

Isolation.

And Mia had been his insurance policy.

The Recording Nobody Had Heard

Mia suddenly remembered something.

“There is one more.”

Daniel looked at her.

“One more what?”

“Recording.”

“Where?”

“In Daddy's car.”

Victoria's face changed.

“What recording?”

“The one from last Tuesday.”

“What did you hear?”

Mia looked frightened.

“Daddy was talking to someone.”

“Who?”

“I don't know.”

“What did they say?”

Mia swallowed.

“They said Mommy had to disappear before Friday.”

Daniel froze.

“Friday?”

Mia nodded.

“Daddy said everything would be ready.”

Victoria looked at Daniel.

“Tonight is Thursday.”

Silence.

Daniel immediately stood.

“Then the plan wasn't supposed to happen tonight.”

Victoria looked confused.

“What are you saying?”

Daniel answered:

“This attack was moved forward.”

“Why?”

“Because Michael knew you were going to expose him.”

Victoria's eyes widened.

“He knew about the account.”

“Yes.”

Daniel looked at Mia.

“And he knew about the recordings.”

Mia whispered:

“He knew.”

The Car

Daniel and Elena returned to the garage.

Michael's car was still there.

The police had searched the vehicle but hadn't found anything obvious.

Daniel opened the trunk.

Nothing.

The glove compartment.

Nothing.

Then Mia pointed.

“Under the seat.”

Daniel crouched.

He reached underneath.

His fingers touched metal.

He pulled out a small black box.

Inside was a phone.

A burner phone.

And a handwritten note.

FRIDAY — 11:00 PM

Below it was an address.

Daniel recognized the location.

His face hardened.

“What is it?”

Victoria asked.

Daniel looked at her.

“The old warehouse.”

Victoria's breathing changed.

“The place where Daniel supposedly died?”

He nodded.

“Yes.”

The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

Daniel stared at the address.

Michael hadn't simply planned to kill Victoria.

He had planned something larger.

The warehouse had been the location of the fire twelve years earlier.

The fire that supposedly killed Daniel.

The place where Michael had erased his first major secret.

And now he was planning to return.

Victoria whispered:

“Why?”

Daniel looked at the phone.

“Because someone is still there.”

“Who?”

He didn't answer.

The burner phone suddenly vibrated.

Everyone froze.

A message appeared.

SHE IS ALIVE.

Then another.

YOU HAVE TEN MINUTES.

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

A third message appeared.

BRING THE GIRL.

Victoria sat upright despite the pain.

“No.”

Daniel looked at Mia.

Then at Elena.

Then at Victoria.

He understood.

This wasn't a warning.

It was a trap.

And someone already knew exactly where they were.

The Hidden Camera

Elena suddenly remembered something.

“Wait.”

She ran back toward the safe room.

Daniel followed.

“What?”

She pointed at the ceiling.

A tiny red light blinked.

Daniel stared.

“A camera.”

Elena's face went pale.

“But Michael doesn't know about this room.”

Daniel examined the device.

“This camera isn't connected to the mansion system.”

“Then who installed it?”

Nobody answered.

Victoria looked at Mia.

Mia whispered:

“Daddy.”

Victoria shook her head.

“No.”

Mia pointed at the camera.

“He told me once that this house had eyes everywhere.”

Daniel's expression hardened.

“Then he wasn't talking about the security system.”

He pulled the camera from the ceiling.

A wire ran through the wall.

Daniel followed it.

It led to a small transmitter.

The transmitter was active.

Someone was watching.

Right now.

The Message

Daniel destroyed the transmitter.

Then the phone vibrated again.

YOU FOUND THE CAMERA.

Daniel stared.

Another message.

BUT YOU DIDN'T FIND THE OTHER ONE.

Mia suddenly looked around the room.

“There's another camera.”

Daniel looked at her.

“How do you know?”

“Because Daddy told me there were two.”

Everyone froze.

Elena whispered:

“Where?”

Mia pointed toward the mirror.

Daniel approached it.

He tapped the glass.

Nothing.

He pulled it from the wall.

Behind it was another camera.

Still recording.

Daniel ripped it out.

The screen on the burner phone went black.

Then one final message appeared.

GOOD. NOW YOU KNOW I'M WATCHING.

The Decision

Victoria looked at Daniel.

“We have to leave.”

“No.”

She frowned.

“What?”

Daniel shook his head.

“If we run, whoever is behind this will disappear.”

“They know where Mia is.”

“I know.”

“They can reach us.”

“I know.”

“Then what do we do?”

Daniel looked at the evidence.

At the cameras.

At the phone.

At the address.

Then he looked at Mia.

“We stop running.”

Victoria stared.

“You want to confront them?”

“No.”

Daniel's voice became quiet.

“I want them to think we're running.”

Elena understood.

“You're setting a trap.”

Daniel nodded.

Victoria looked at him.

“You're just like him.”

Daniel's expression changed.

“No.”

He looked at Michael's photograph on the burner phone.

“I'm doing what he never expected.”

“What?”

Daniel smiled faintly.

“I'm bringing witnesses.”

Dawn

By sunrise, Victoria had been moved to a secure medical facility.

Mia was placed under protective custody.

Elena agreed to testify.

Daniel handed every recording to the investigators.

The mansion became a crime scene.

The secret rooms were sealed.

The files were catalogued.

And Michael remained in custody.

But something bothered Daniel.

Michael had known about the hidden cameras.

He had known Victoria was alive.

He had known about the recordings.

And someone had sent messages from inside the mansion's security network.

Someone who wasn't Michael.

Daniel returned to the estate alone.

He stood in the foyer.

Broken glass still covered the floor.

He looked at the staircase where Mia had screamed.

Then he noticed something beneath the railing.

A tiny envelope.

He opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

Michael.

Victoria.

Mia.

And another man.

The photograph had been taken only three days earlier.

On the back, someone had written:

Michael was never the one in control.

Daniel stared at the words.

Then his phone rang.

Victoria.

He answered.

Her voice was barely a whisper.

“Daniel?”

“Yes.”

“Did you find the photograph?”

Daniel's eyes widened.

“How did you know?”

“Because I received one too.”

“What did yours say?”

Victoria hesitated.

Then whispered:

“Your friend isn't dead.”

Daniel went still.

“What friend?”

Victoria took a breath.

“The man who helped Michael twelve years ago.”

Daniel looked at the photograph again.

The unknown man standing beside Michael suddenly seemed familiar.

Very familiar.

Then Victoria said:

“Daniel…”

“Yes?”

“That's the man who saved your life.”

Daniel's blood ran cold.

Because if Victoria was right, the person he had trusted most for twelve years—

had been standing beside Michael from the beginning.

And somewhere outside the hospital, a black car slowly pulled away from the curb.

Inside it sat a man watching the building.

He smiled.

Victoria was alive.

Mia was safe.

Daniel was investigating.

Everything had gone exactly as planned.

Because the real mastermind had never wanted Victoria dead.

He had wanted her frightened.

He wanted her to run.

And now—

May you like

she had finally led him to the one thing he had spent twelve years searching for.

The truth.
