Chapter 13 — Michael's Final Escape

Chapter 13 — Michael's Final Escape
The prison alarm sounded at 2:17 in the morning.
Three short blasts.
Then silence.
For exactly six seconds.
Those six seconds were all Michael needed.
He had been waiting for this moment since the day the courtroom doors closed behind him.
Everyone believed the trial had ended his story.
They were wrong.
Michael had never survived by fighting fair.
He survived by preparing for the moment when everyone else stopped watching.
And tonight, everyone had stopped watching.
The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Finished
Michael sat alone in the prison infirmary.
His wrists were cuffed.
Two officers stood outside.
A camera watched him from the ceiling.
He looked defeated.
But beneath the mattress was a tiny piece of metal.
He had hidden it there for weeks.
Not a weapon.
A key.
A key copied from a maintenance cabinet.
He had memorized the prison's nighttime routine.
He knew which guards changed shifts.
He knew which cameras had blind spots.
He knew exactly how long the emergency doors remained unlocked during a system reset.
He had planned everything.
But escaping wasn't his real objective.
Michael wanted one thing.
Mia.
Because he knew the child possessed the recordings.
And he knew those recordings could destroy everyone who had helped him.
The Power Failure
The lights went out.
Michael immediately stood.
The emergency lights flickered.
A guard shouted down the corridor.
“What happened?”
Another answered:
“Generator failure.”
Michael smiled.
The infirmary door opened.
A nurse rushed inside.
“Stay where you are.”
Michael moved before she could react.
He knocked the key ring from her hand and grabbed it.
The nurse screamed.
The guard entered.
Michael slammed the door behind him.
Then everything happened at once.
An alarm sounded.
Doors opened.
Prisoners shouted.
Guards ran through the corridor.
Michael disappeared into the chaos.
He wasn't trying to reach the main exit.
He went downward.
Toward the service tunnels.
Because twelve years earlier, he had helped design part of the prison's security system.
He knew the tunnels better than the people guarding them.
The Hidden Passage
Michael reached an old maintenance door.
The key worked.
Behind it was a narrow concrete tunnel.
He crawled through darkness.
At the end waited a drainage passage.
And beyond that—
a parked vehicle.
Someone had prepared it.
Michael opened the driver's door.
Inside was a black coat.
A phone.
A wallet.
A new identity.
He picked up the phone.
One message waited.
THE GIRL IS STILL AT THE HOUSE.
Michael smiled.
“Good.”
Then another message appeared.
DON'T TRUST JONATHAN.
Michael's smile disappeared.
He stared at the screen.
For the first time that night, he looked uncertain.
Daniel's House
At the same moment, Daniel was asleep.
Victoria was in the bedroom.
Elena had taken the night shift downstairs.
Mia slept in the room beside her father.
The house was heavily protected.
Security cameras covered every entrance.
Two officers remained outside.
A security company monitored the property.
After everything that had happened, Daniel believed Mia was finally safe.
That belief lasted until 2:31 a.m.
A camera went dark.
Then another.
Then another.
Elena noticed first.
She stared at the security monitor.
“That's strange.”
She picked up the phone.
Before she could call Daniel—
the screen went completely black.
Mia Wakes Up
Mia opened her eyes.
Someone was standing beside her bed.
She couldn't see the face.
Only a shadow.
She sat up.
“Daddy?”
The figure said nothing.
Mia reached for the lamp.
The hand moved first.
The lamp went out.
Mia screamed.
The figure grabbed her.
But Mia had learned something during the past few months.
When adults frightened her—
she didn't freeze anymore.
She fought.
She kicked.
She screamed.
She bit the hand covering her mouth.
The figure cursed.
Mia fell from the bed.
Then she ran.
The Hallway
Mia raced through the hallway.
“Daddy!”
Daniel woke instantly.
He heard footsteps.
Then another sound.
Mia screaming.
Daniel opened the door.
“Mia!”
She ran directly into his arms.
“He's here!”
“Who?”
“M-Michael!”
Daniel's blood ran cold.
He turned.
A figure stood at the end of the corridor.
Michael.
Still wearing prison clothes.
Still breathing hard from the escape.
Daniel stared at him.
“You're supposed to be in prison.”
Michael smiled.
“I was.”
Daniel pushed Mia behind him.
“Get out.”
Michael raised his hands.
“I don't want to hurt you.”
“You've already hurt enough people.”
Michael's eyes moved toward Mia.
“I need what she has.”
Daniel understood.
“The recordings.”
Michael nodded.
“Give them to me.”
“No.”
Michael's expression hardened.
“Then I'll take them.”
Victoria Enters
Victoria appeared behind Daniel.
She stopped when she saw Michael.
“No.”
Michael looked at her.
“Victoria.”
She stepped backward.
“You're supposed to be locked away.”
“I was.”
“You escaped.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Michael looked at Mia.
“Because of her.”
Victoria immediately moved toward the child.
Michael's face changed.
“Don't.”
Daniel stepped between them.
“You're not touching her.”
Michael suddenly pulled a small device from his pocket.
The house lights switched off.
Daniel heard a crash.
Then Mia screamed.
“Daddy!”
Michael had grabbed her.
The Hostage
Daniel turned toward the sound.
“Mia!”
Emergency lights came on.
Michael stood at the end of the hallway.
One arm around Mia.
The little girl struggled.
“Let me go!”
Michael whispered:
“Stop fighting.”
Daniel raised his hands.
“Michael.”
Michael looked at him.
“Stay back.”
“Let her go.”
“I will.”
“When?”
“When I get what I need.”
Daniel stared at him.
“You think those recordings will save you?”
“No.”
Michael smiled.
“They'll save everyone else.”
Daniel frowned.
“What?”
Michael leaned closer.
“You don't understand.”
“Explain.”
“I wasn't the only one exposed by those recordings.”
He looked toward Victoria.
“Your father is terrified of them.”
Daniel's expression changed.
Michael continued:
“Jonathan doesn't care about me anymore.”
“Then why take Mia?”
“Because Mia is the only person Jonathan cannot replace.”
The Escape Vehicle
Michael forced Daniel to open the rear entrance.
Outside was a black SUV.
Daniel recognized it.
It belonged to Crown Meridian.
“You planned this before the trial.”
Michael nodded.
“I planned it before the trial even started.”
Daniel looked at Mia.
“Let her go.”
Michael shook his head.
“Not yet.”
Then he whispered:
“She knows where your mother is.”
Daniel froze.
“What?”
Michael looked at Mia.
“Don't you, little girl?”
Mia stared at him.
She didn't answer.
Michael smiled.
“Tell your father.”
Mia's eyes filled with tears.
“I don't know.”
“You do.”
“No.”
Michael tightened his grip.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Don't touch her.”
Michael stopped.
“Then tell me where the recorder is.”
Daniel stared.
“The recorder is gone.”
Michael laughed.
“Not the pink one.”
Daniel froze.
“The original.”
Michael's expression became cold.
“The one your mother gave Mia.”
Mia's Secret
Daniel looked at his daughter.
“Mia?”
She was crying.
“I didn't tell him.”
Daniel knelt slightly.
“It's okay.”
Michael interrupted.
“Tell him.”
Mia shook her head.
Michael whispered:
“Your grandmother is waiting.”
Daniel stared at him.
“Where?”
Michael smiled.
“You're getting closer.”
Then a gunshot echoed outside.
Michael pulled Mia toward the vehicle.
Police surrounded the property.
“Drop the weapon!”
Michael looked at Daniel.
“Your rescue team came early.”
Daniel shouted:
“Mia!”
Michael forced the child into the SUV.
Daniel ran toward them.
The door slammed.
The vehicle accelerated.
Daniel chased it until it disappeared through the gates.
The Chase
Police vehicles followed immediately.
Helicopters rose above the estate.
Daniel jumped into an armored vehicle.
“Where are they going?”
The officer checked the tracker.
“North.”
Daniel frowned.
“North where?”
“An old industrial district.”
Daniel suddenly remembered.
“The warehouse.”
The officer looked at him.
“The one where Emily was attacked?”
“Yes.”
Michael was going back to the beginning.
The Warehouse
Michael arrived first.
He dragged Mia inside.
She looked around.
“This is where Mommy was.”
Michael nodded.
“Yes.”
“You hurt her here.”
“I made mistakes.”
“You killed people.”
Michael looked away.
For the first time, his voice sounded tired.
“I know.”
Mia stared at him.
“Why?”
Michael sat down.
“Because I thought power would make me safe.”
“Did it?”
He looked at her.
“No.”
Mia's expression softened for a moment.
Then she noticed something.
A tiny red light.
A camera.
She smiled.
Michael didn't notice.
The Hidden Recording
Mia had activated another recorder.
The device was sewn into the sleeve of her dress.
Everything Michael said was being transmitted.
His voice continued.
“Your father thinks Jonathan controls everything.”
Mia asked:
“Doesn't he?”
“No.”
“Then who does?”
Michael stared at the floor.
“The person Jonathan fears.”
“Who?”
Michael hesitated.
“Your grandmother.”
Mia's eyes widened.
“Margaret?”
“No.”
Michael looked toward the dark doorway.
“Your real grandmother.”
Mia whispered:
“My grandmother?”
“Yes.”
“Who is she?”
Michael's expression changed.
“I don't know.”
For the first time, Michael sounded genuinely afraid.
“That's why Jonathan wants you.”
The Trap
Police surrounded the warehouse.
Daniel arrived.
He stepped from the vehicle.
“Michael!”
Michael appeared in an upper window.
Mia stood beside him.
“Back away!”
Daniel shouted:
“Let her go!”
Michael shook his head.
“You still don't understand!”
Daniel looked up.
“What?”
“Jonathan isn't trying to get the trust.”
“Then what?”
Michael stared at Mia.
“He's trying to erase the bloodline.”
Daniel's blood ran cold.
“What does that mean?”
Michael answered:
“Everyone connected to the original trust.”
He pointed toward Mia.
“Everyone who can prove who owns it.”
Then he looked at Daniel.
“Your mother.”
Then toward the darkness.
“Your grandmother.”
Then himself.
“They're all targets.”
The Betrayal
Suddenly, a gunshot came from behind Daniel.
One officer fell.
Everyone turned.
Another group emerged from the warehouse.
They weren't police.
They were Jonathan's men.
Michael looked shocked.
“I told you not to trust him.”
Daniel shouted:
“Who?”
Michael looked toward the men.
“Jonathan.”
The men raised their weapons.
The police returned fire.
Chaos erupted.
Daniel ran toward Mia.
Michael grabbed her and pulled her through a side door.
“Come on!”
Mia screamed:
“Daddy!”
Daniel chased them.
The Cliff
Michael reached an old loading platform.
Beyond it was a steep drop.
A helicopter waited below.
Daniel arrived seconds later.
“Michael!”
Michael stopped.
Mia stood beside him.
Daniel pointed at him.
“This ends now.”
Michael laughed.
“No.”
Then he looked at Mia.
“Tell your father.”
Mia shook her head.
Michael whispered:
“Tell him where the original recorder is.”
Mia looked at Daniel.
Then she smiled.
“Inside your prison.”
Michael froze.
“What?”
“You searched my room.”
“Yes.”
“You searched Daddy's house.”
“Yes.”
“You searched Grandma's old house.”
“Yes.”
“But you never searched the prison.”
Michael's face went completely pale.
Because he suddenly understood.
Mia had never hidden the recorder in the house.
She had hidden it where nobody would think to look.
Inside the prison.
In the one place Michael believed he controlled.
The Last Move
Police surrounded the platform.
Michael looked at Mia.
“You lied.”
Mia answered:
“You taught me how.”
Michael stared at her.
Then the helicopter doors opened.
A man stepped out.
Jonathan.
Daniel froze.
His father looked at him.
Then at Mia.
Then at Michael.
“You were always a disappointment.”
Michael's face twisted with rage.
“You used me.”
Jonathan answered:
“Yes.”
“You promised me freedom.”
“I promised you survival.”
Michael raised his weapon.
Jonathan didn't move.
Daniel shouted:
“Michael, don't!”
A single shot echoed.
Everyone froze.
But Michael wasn't the one who fired.
Jonathan was holding the gun.
Michael collapsed.
Mia screamed.
Daniel rushed toward his daughter.
Jonathan smiled.
“Now we can finally finish this.”
Then he looked at Daniel.
“Your mother is waiting.”
Daniel's blood ran cold.
Jonathan turned toward the helicopter.
But before he could leave—
sirens surrounded the entire platform.
Dozens of police vehicles appeared.
Emily stepped from the lead vehicle.
She held up a small recorder.
“We heard everything.”
Jonathan's smile disappeared.
Emily continued:
“And so did the federal investigators.”
Daniel looked at Mia.
Her hidden recorder was still transmitting.
Michael's confession.
Jonathan's threats.
Everything.
For once, the trap had closed from the other side.
Jonathan stared at Mia.
The little girl stared back.
Then she said the words that finally broke his confidence:
“You forgot something.”
Jonathan frowned.
“What?”
Mia held up her sleeve.
“The camera.”
Jonathan's face went white.
Every word he'd spoken that night had been recorded.
Michael's final escape had failed.
But as officers surrounded Jonathan, Daniel looked down at Michael.
The man was still alive.
Barely.
Before the paramedics carried him away, Michael opened his eyes.
He looked at Daniel.
“There is one thing you still don't know.”
Daniel leaned closer.
“What?”
Michael whispered:
“Your mother didn't disappear.”
A pause.
“She was taken.”
“By Jonathan?”
Michael shook his head.
“No.”
His eyes moved toward Mia.
“By the person Jonathan was running from.”
Then he lost consciousness.
Daniel stood frozen.
The police had captured Jonathan.
Michael was finally in custody again.
Mia was safe.
Yet the mystery had become even darker.
Because somewhere in the shadows was someone powerful enough to frighten Jonathan Cross.
Someone who had been watching the family for years.
May you like
And according to Michael—
that person had Daniel's mother.
