Chapter 8 — Mia's Little Recorder

Chapter 8 — Mia's Little Recorder

Mia's recorder was smaller than Daniel expected.

It was pink.

Cheap.

The kind of little device a child might use to record songs, secrets, or bedtime stories.

Yet inside that tiny recorder was something powerful enough to destroy Michael's carefully constructed world.

The truth.

Daniel found it beneath Mia's mattress.

He had searched the room three times.

The police had searched it twice.

But Mia had hidden it inside the lining of an old stuffed rabbit.

When Daniel finally discovered it, he didn't immediately press play.

He looked at Mia.

“Did you record all of this yourself?”

She nodded.

“When did you start?”

Mia looked down.

“When Mommy told me not to be scared.”

Daniel's chest tightened.

“She told you that?”

Mia nodded again.

“But I was scared.”

“So you recorded?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

The little girl looked at him with heartbreaking seriousness.

“Because nobody believed me before.”

The First Recording

Daniel connected the recorder to his laptop.

The first file was only thirty seconds long.

Mia's tiny voice filled the room.

“Hi, recorder.”

A pause.

“Daddy says grown-ups tell the truth.”

Another pause.

“But sometimes they don't.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

Mia continued.

“So I'm going to remember everything.”

The recording ended.

Elena wiped tears from her eyes.

Daniel looked at Mia.

“How old were you?”

“Six.”

“You've been recording since then?”

Mia nodded.

“Sometimes.”

“Where did you keep it?”

“In my rabbit.”

“Did Michael know?”

“No.”

Daniel looked at the recorder.

That single answer changed everything.

Michael had spent weeks watching the house.

He had cameras everywhere.

He had monitored Victoria.

He had monitored Mia.

But he had never discovered the one thing that could expose him.

A child had outsmarted him.

The Voice Behind the Door

The next recording lasted almost four minutes.

Mia's breathing was audible.

She sounded frightened.

Then came Michael's voice.

“Where is your mother?”

Mia didn't answer.

“I asked you a question.”

Silence.

“Don't make me ask twice.”

Mia whispered:

“She went upstairs.”

Michael said:

“She didn't.”

Another silence.

Then a door slammed.

Mia began crying.

Daniel paused the recording.

He looked at her.

“Did he hurt you?”

Mia shook her head.

“He didn't touch me.”

“Then why were you crying?”

“Because he hurt Mommy.”

Daniel pressed his lips together.

The recording continued.

Michael's voice became colder.

“Your mother is sick.”

Mia whispered:

“No, she isn't.”

“You don't know that.”

“She isn't.”

Michael laughed.

“You're going to tell everyone she's sick.”

Mia asked:

“Why?”

“Because that's what good daughters do.”

The recording ended.

Daniel stared at the screen.

Michael hadn't only abused Victoria.

He had tried to recruit Mia into the lie.

The Recording Nobody Expected

The next file was longer.

Almost twelve minutes.

Mia had apparently hidden the recorder beneath a sofa cushion.

Voices filled the room.

Michael.

And another man.

Daniel immediately recognized Richard.

Richard said:

“She has to sign.”

Michael replied:

“She won't.”

“Then make her.”

“I already tried.”

“And the girl?”

“She knows too much.”

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

Richard continued:

“She can be controlled.”

Michael laughed.

“She trusts nobody.”

“She's seven.”

“She'll break.”

Daniel stopped the recording.

Elena whispered:

“They were talking about Mia.”

Daniel nodded.

“They were planning around her.”

He restarted it.

Richard asked:

“What happens if she tells someone?”

Michael answered:

“Then we make everyone believe she's lying.”

The room became silent.

Daniel stared at Mia.

Michael had predicted exactly what he was going to do.

And now he was doing it.

The Perfect Strategy

Two days later, Michael's attorney appeared on television.

He didn't mention the recordings.

Instead, he mentioned Mia.

“My client believes his daughter is being manipulated by adults.”

Daniel watched the interview in disbelief.

The attorney continued:

“She has recently made a number of disturbing allegations.”

The reporter asked:

“Are you saying the child is lying?”

The attorney paused.

“We're saying she may not understand what she witnessed.”

Daniel turned off the television.

“He's preparing the jury before they even hear the evidence.”

Elena looked frightened.

“How?”

“By making Mia look unreliable.”

Mia stood in the doorway.

“Am I a liar?”

Daniel immediately stood.

“No.”

“But he said…”

“I know.”

Mia looked down.

“What if they believe him?”

Daniel knelt.

“Then we'll show them the truth.”

She looked at the recorder.

“With this?”

“With everything.”

The Attack on Mia's Credibility

Michael's legal team requested a psychological evaluation.

Then another.

Then another.

They claimed Mia was traumatized.

Confused.

Easily influenced.

They suggested Daniel had coached her.

They suggested Elena had coached her.

They suggested Victoria had coached her.

Every adult around Mia became a potential source of manipulation.

Michael's lawyer eventually made the accusation publicly.

“Children can remember things incorrectly.”

Daniel knew that was the strategy.

Not proving Michael innocent.

Making everyone doubt the child.

The most vulnerable witness in the case.

Mia overheard the television.

She began crying.

“I remember.”

Daniel turned toward her.

“I know.”

“What if they say I don't?”

“Then we'll show them.”

“But what if they don't believe the recorder?”

Daniel held it up.

“Then we'll show them everything else.”

The Missing File

The police examined the recordings.

Most were clear.

Some were distorted.

One file was damaged.

Daniel couldn't open it.

The technician tried.

Nothing.

The file name was:

MIA_0714_FINAL.

Daniel stared.

“Why is that date important?”

Elena looked at the screen.

“July fourteenth.”

“What happened then?”

Elena thought.

“That's the day Catherine disappeared.”

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

“Open it.”

“We're trying.”

The technician worked for hours.

Finally, the file opened.

Static.

Then Mia's voice.

“Daddy?”

No answer.

“Daddy, are you there?”

Michael's voice appeared.

“What are you doing awake?”

“I heard Mommy crying.”

“She isn't crying.”

“She is.”

Michael sighed.

“Go back to bed.”

“Who was the lady?”

Silence.

“What lady?”

“The lady who came to see Mommy.”

Michael's voice changed.

“What did she look like?”

Mia described Catherine.

Then she said:

“She gave Mommy a picture.”

Michael demanded:

“Where is it?”

“I don't know.”

“What did your mother do with it?”

“I don't know.”

Michael became furious.

“Don't lie to me.”

Mia cried.

“I'm not!”

Then came a sound.

A door opening.

A woman's voice.

Catherine.

“Leave the child alone.”

Daniel stopped breathing.

Catherine had been inside the house that night.

Alive.

And Mia had heard her.

The Woman Behind the Door

The recording continued.

Catherine said:

“Victoria knows.”

Michael replied:

“She doesn't know enough.”

Catherine answered:

“She knows about Mia.”

Michael became silent.

Then:

“That's why Mia has to stay here.”

Catherine said:

“You can't keep her forever.”

Michael laughed.

“I don't need forever.”

“What do you mean?”

“Just until the transfer.”

“What transfer?”

“The inheritance.”

Catherine's voice became frightened.

“You're going to use the child.”

Michael answered:

“She was created for this.”

Daniel froze.

The recording ended.

Mia looked at him.

“What did he mean?”

Daniel couldn't answer.

Not yet.

The Courtroom

Three weeks later, Mia sat outside the courtroom.

She wore a blue dress.

Her hands were clasped tightly.

Daniel sat beside her.

The prosecutor approached.

“You don't have to be afraid.”

Mia nodded.

“I'm not.”

But she was.

Michael's attorney walked past them.

He looked at Mia.

Then smiled.

Not kindly.

Mia immediately moved closer to Daniel.

The attorney noticed.

He smiled again.

Daniel understood.

This was psychological warfare.

The lawyer wanted Mia frightened before she ever entered the courtroom.

The First Question

When Mia finally took the stand, the courtroom became silent.

The judge spoke gently.

“Do you understand that you should tell the truth?”

Mia nodded.

“Yes.”

The prosecutor asked:

“Do you know the defendant?”

Mia looked at Michael.

“Yes.”

“Who is he?”

“My father.”

“Did you ever see him hurt your mother?”

Mia nodded.

“Yes.”

Michael's attorney stood.

“Objection.”

The judge allowed the question but warned the prosecutor.

Then the attorney approached.

He smiled at Mia.

“Hello, Mia.”

She said nothing.

“Do you love your father?”

Mia looked toward Daniel.

Then back at Michael.

“I used to.”

The courtroom became completely silent.

The attorney's smile disappeared.

“You used to?”

“Yes.”

“Why not anymore?”

“Because he hurt Mommy.”

The attorney leaned closer.

“Are you sure?”

Mia nodded.

“Yes.”

“Could someone have told you that?”

“No.”

“Could your mother have told you?”

“No.”

“Could Daniel have told you?”

“No.”

“Could Elena have told you?”

“No.”

“Then how do you remember?”

Mia looked at him.

“Because I recorded it.”

The Recorder Plays

The prosecutor placed the recorder into evidence.

The audio began.

Michael's voice filled the courtroom.

“If she tells anyone, we'll make them believe she's lying.”

Nobody moved.

Then came Richard's voice.

“She's seven.”

Michael:

“She'll break.”

A murmur spread through the courtroom.

Michael's face changed.

The prosecutor played another recording.

Michael's voice:

“Your mother is sick.”

Mia's voice:

“No, she isn't.”

Then Michael:

“You're going to tell everyone she's sick.”

The recording stopped.

The judge looked at Michael.

“Mr. Carter, you will remain silent.”

Michael's attorney leaned toward him.

Michael whispered something.

The attorney's face went pale.

The Final Recording

The prosecution played the last file.

The courtroom listened.

Catherine's voice:

“You're going to use the child.”

Michael:

“She was created for this.”

Then:

“The inheritance.”

The recording ended.

The prosecutor turned toward the judge.

“We request that this evidence be admitted in full.”

Michael's attorney objected.

“This recording was made by a minor without consent.”

The prosecutor answered:

“The defendant's own voice is unmistakable.”

The judge considered the matter.

Then ruled:

“Admitted.”

Michael stared at Mia.

For the first time, his expression contained something other than arrogance.

Fear.

Mia looked directly at him.

She didn't cry.

She didn't look away.

She simply said:

“You told me nobody would believe me.”

Michael's face hardened.

Mia continued:

“But I believed me.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

The courtroom remained silent.

The Threat

That night, the police discovered a note inside Daniel's car.

Only one sentence:

THE CHILD HAS SAID ENOUGH.

Daniel immediately requested increased protection.

But before the officers could secure the property, his phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

A distorted voice said:

“You think the recorder saved her?”

Daniel said nothing.

“The recorder only proves what Michael said.”

“Who is this?”

“You're still looking at the wrong man.”

Daniel's expression changed.

“What do you mean?”

The caller whispered:

“Michael was told what to do.”

“By whom?”

A pause.

“The woman who created the plan.”

The call ended.

Daniel stared at the phone.

Behind him, Mia stood in the doorway.

She was holding the little pink recorder.

“Daddy?”

Daniel turned.

“What is it?”

“I found another recording.”

His heart stopped.

“Where?”

“In my room.”

“What does it say?”

Mia pressed play.

Static.

Then a woman's voice.

Not Victoria.

Not Catherine.

Not Elena.

A woman Daniel had never heard before.

She whispered:

“Mia isn't the inheritance.”

A pause.

“She is the proof.”

Then another voice answered.

Michael.

“No. She is the key.”

The recording ended.

Daniel stared at Mia.

The little girl looked frightened.

“Daddy…”

He knelt beside her.

“What?”

“There's one more thing.”

“What?”

Mia whispered:

“The woman in the recording…”

She looked toward the hallway.

“She came into my room last night.”

Daniel's blood ran cold.

“What woman?”

Mia pointed toward the dark doorway.

“The woman Michael said didn't exist.”

May you like

And somewhere upstairs—

a floorboard creaked.
