Chapter 4 — The Hidden Camera

Chapter 4 — The Hidden Camera
The first thing Daniel noticed was the dust.
It covered the hidden camera behind the mirror.
But not completely.
Someone had touched it recently.
Daniel stood in the abandoned study, holding the tiny device between two fingers.
The police had already searched the room twice.
They had photographed the walls.
Checked the furniture.
Opened every drawer.
Yet nobody had noticed the camera.
Nobody except Mia.
And now Daniel understood why.
Michael had never trusted ordinary security.
He had built another system behind it.
A private system.
A system designed not to protect the people inside the mansion—
but to watch them.
Daniel looked at Elena.
“How many cameras?”
She swallowed.
“I don't know.”
“Guess.”
“Maybe six.”
Daniel shook his head.
“Try twenty.”
Elena's face went pale.
“Twenty?”
Daniel placed the camera on the desk.
“This isn't the main system.”
He turned it over.
A tiny serial number was engraved beneath the casing.
“This belongs to a private surveillance network.”
Elena whispered:
“Michael was watching everyone.”
Daniel looked toward the hallway.
“No.”
He corrected her.
“He was watching Victoria.”
The First Recording
The investigators connected the camera to a forensic computer.
A technician opened the files.
Thousands of video clips appeared.
Weeks.
Months.
Years.
Daniel stared at the dates.
The earliest recording was almost two years old.
Victoria walking through the kitchen.
Victoria entering the study.
Victoria speaking with Elena.
Victoria holding Mia.
Nothing seemed unusual.
Then Daniel noticed something.
The cameras weren't randomly positioned.
Every angle focused on Victoria.
Her bedroom.
Her office.
The kitchen.
The garden.
Even the hallway outside Mia's room.
Someone had been studying their routines.
Daniel leaned toward the screen.
“Open the oldest recording.”
The technician clicked.
The image appeared.
Victoria entered the study.
Michael followed her.
They were arguing.
No sound.
Only movement.
Victoria pointed toward a folder.
Michael grabbed it.
She pulled it back.
Then he leaned close.
The technician enhanced the footage.
Daniel watched Michael's lips.
The software reconstructed several words.
“You don't understand what happens if you leave.”
Daniel's jaw tightened.
“Next.”
Another recording.
Three days later.
Victoria alone.
She opened a drawer.
Removed a small envelope.
Looked around.
Then hid it inside a book.
Daniel paused the video.
“What book?”
The technician zoomed in.
A black leather ledger.
Daniel recognized it.
The ledger had been found in Michael's hidden room.
It contained financial transactions.
Payments.
Offshore transfers.
Names.
Dates.
The foundation of Michael's empire.
The Calendar
Daniel asked the technician to search for recordings from one specific date.
The night Michael attacked Victoria.
The system showed footage from every room.
At 7:12 p.m., Michael entered the study.
At 7:18, he opened the hidden safe.
At 7:26, he made a phone call.
At 7:31, he walked downstairs.
At 7:42, Victoria entered the foyer.
At 7:44—
the attack happened.
But something else caught Daniel's attention.
A recording from three weeks earlier.
Michael stood in the study.
He was alone.
On the desk was a calendar.
A date had been circled in red.
FRIDAY.
Michael looked at the calendar.
Then opened a folder.
Inside was Victoria's photograph.
Beneath it:
PHASE THREE — FINAL SILENCE.
Daniel stopped breathing.
“Go back.”
The technician rewound.
Michael sat at the desk.
He made a phone call.
This time, the audio was intact.
“Everything is ready.”
A man's voice answered through the speaker.
“Is she suspicious?”
“Not enough.”
“And the girl?”
Michael leaned back.
“Mia will be asleep.”
The other man asked:
“What about the housekeeper?”
Michael smiled.
“Elena doesn't know anything.”
Daniel looked at Elena.
She covered her mouth.
“He knew.”
Daniel nodded.
“He knew you were listening.”
Three Weeks Earlier
The next file was dated three weeks before the attack.
Michael entered the mansion with a large cardboard box.
He carried it into the study.
Twenty minutes later, a technician arrived.
The technician installed cameras.
One behind the mirror.
One inside the bookshelf.
One above the fireplace.
One disguised as a smoke detector.
One hidden inside a vase.
And another—
inside the child's bedroom.
Daniel's expression hardened.
“Stop.”
The footage froze.
The camera in Mia's bedroom was pointed directly at her bed.
Elena looked sick.
“He filmed her sleeping?”
Daniel nodded.
“For surveillance.”
“No.”
Elena's voice trembled.
“For control.”
Daniel stared at the screen.
Mia had been watched for weeks.
Every night.
Every morning.
Every time she cried.
Every time she spoke.
Every time she tried to hide something.
Michael had known.
He had known exactly how frightened she was.
And instead of protecting her—
he had used it.
Mia's Drawing
A recording showed Mia sitting on the floor.
She was drawing.
A house.
A woman.
A little girl.
And a large black figure standing outside.
Michael entered.
He looked at the drawing.
“What is that?”
Mia covered it.
“Nothing.”
Michael took it.
“Is this me?”
Mia nodded.
“Why am I outside?”
“Because you're scary.”
Michael's face hardened.
The recording showed him tearing the drawing in half.
Mia started crying.
“Don't cry.”
“You tore my picture.”
“Then don't draw things about me.”
He walked away.
Daniel stared at the screen.
Elena whispered:
“She was already afraid of him.”
Daniel answered:
“She was afraid because he wanted her to be.”
The Meeting
Then came the footage Daniel had been waiting for.
Michael meeting someone.
The location wasn't the mansion.
It was a private parking garage.
The man wore a dark coat.
His face was hidden.
Michael handed him an envelope.
The stranger counted the money.
Then Michael said:
“She'll sign the papers after Friday.”
“What if she doesn't?”
“She won't have a choice.”
“And the girl?”
Michael hesitated.
“She'll be taken care of.”
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
The stranger leaned closer.
“No mistakes this time.”
Michael replied:
“There won't be.”
The video ended.
Daniel immediately asked:
“Can you enhance his face?”
The technician tried.
Nothing.
The man's face remained hidden.
But his voice was clear.
Daniel played it again.
And again.
Then he froze.
“I know that voice.”
Elena looked at him.
“Who?”
Daniel didn't answer.
He wasn't ready.
Because the voice belonged to someone he trusted.
Someone who had stood beside him after his supposed death.
Someone who had helped him rebuild his life.
Someone he had believed was loyal.
The Blueprint
The surveillance system contained more than recordings.
There were documents.
Floor plans.
Schedules.
Photographs.
Medical reports.
Even Victoria's daily routine.
Michael had created an entire file.
VICTORIA CARTER — SUBJECT.
Daniel opened it.
Her habits were listed.
7:00 a.m. — breakfast.
8:15 — school drop-off.
9:00 — home office.
12:30 — lunch.
3:15 — pick up Mia.
6:30 — dinner.
8:45 — upstairs.
10:00 — sleep.
Beside the schedule was another page.
ESCAPE ROUTES.
Daniel stared.
Michael had mapped every exit from the mansion.
The front door.
Garage.
Kitchen.
Basement.
Servants' passage.
Emergency tunnel.
Then one final line:
If subject attempts escape, intercept before reaching gate.
Elena stepped backward.
“This wasn't an argument.”
Daniel shook his head.
“It was an operation.”
The Night Everything Changed
The final sequence showed Michael preparing the mansion.
He dismissed the guards.
Disabled the external alarm.
Removed two cameras.
Left one security gate unlocked.
Then he placed the fire poker beside the fireplace.
He checked the glass cabinet.
He moved several objects.
He measured the distance between the cabinet and the floor.
He even placed a towel nearby.
Daniel watched silently.
Michael wasn't improvising.
He had rehearsed the attack.
The technician paused the video.
Daniel said:
“Keep going.”
Michael walked through the foyer.
He stopped at the cabinet.
Looked at it.
Then smiled.
The recording timestamp was three days before Victoria was attacked.
Daniel whispered:
“He knew exactly where she would fall.”
Elena stared at the screen.
“He planned everything.”
“Yes.”
“And he knew she might survive.”
Daniel looked at the bloodstained floor.
“No.”
He pointed at the next recording.
“He planned for that too.”
The Emergency Plan
The video showed Michael speaking to someone on the phone.
“If she survives the first impact, I'll finish it.”
The voice on the other end asked:
“And if someone sees you?”
Michael smiled.
“No one will.”
“What about Elena?”
“She'll be too scared.”
“And Mia?”
“She'll be told her mother fell.”
Daniel's hands curled into fists.
Then Michael said something that made him stop.
“Mia already knows how to stay quiet.”
Daniel stared.
The room became silent.
Michael had been training his daughter to remain silent.
Not protecting her.
Preparing her.
The Camera Mia Found
Daniel suddenly remembered something.
Mia had said:
“Daddy told me there were two.”
There weren't two cameras.
There were twelve.
Daniel ordered the investigators to search the entire mansion.
Behind mirrors.
Inside lamps.
Under tables.
In smoke detectors.
Within electrical outlets.
They found eleven more.
Every one contained recordings.
Every one had been active before the attack.
And every recording pointed to the same conclusion.
Michael had planned Victoria's murder weeks in advance.
But the final camera contained something different.
It was hidden in the foyer chandelier.
The camera had a clear view of the entire room.
Including Michael.
Including Victoria.
Including Mia.
Including Elena.
And, most importantly—
the reflection in the glass cabinet.
Daniel watched the footage.
Michael attacked Victoria.
She fell.
Mia ran downstairs.
Elena stepped from the shadows.
Michael raised the fire poker.
Then—
someone appeared behind the mansion's front door.
Daniel.
Except the timestamp showed something impossible.
Daniel had arrived seven minutes before the attack.
He looked confused.
“I wasn't here.”
The technician checked the time.
“The timestamp is accurate.”
Daniel stared at the screen.
Then the truth struck him.
Someone had altered the footage.
Not the event.
The timeline.
Someone wanted Daniel to appear inside the mansion before the murder.
Why?
To frame him.
The Real Plan
Daniel watched the recording again.
The image showed Michael looking toward the front door.
He seemed surprised.
Then he smiled.
As though he had expected someone.
Daniel zoomed in.
Michael wasn't looking at Daniel.
He was looking at another person standing behind him.
A woman.
Her face was partially hidden.
But she was holding something.
A folder.
Michael nodded.
The woman handed it to him.
Then disappeared.
Daniel froze.
“Who is she?”
The technician enhanced the image.
The face became clearer.
Elena stepped closer.
“No.”
Daniel looked at her.
“You know her?”
Elena nodded slowly.
“I've seen her before.”
“Where?”
Elena pointed at the screen.
“She came here every Tuesday.”
“How long?”
“Almost a year.”
“Who is she?”
Elena swallowed.
“She was Victoria's therapist.”
Daniel stared.
“That makes no sense.”
“It gets worse.”
Elena pointed to the folder.
“She was the person Victoria trusted most.”
The Hidden File
Inside the folder was a document.
The surveillance camera captured only one page.
At the top:
VICTORIA CARTER — PSYCHOLOGICAL ASSESSMENT.
Daniel's face hardened.
Michael had obtained Victoria's confidential medical information.
But that wasn't the worst part.
The final line read:
Subject is increasingly unstable. Potential risk to child.
Daniel looked at Elena.
“He planned to use this against her.”
Elena nodded.
“To make everyone believe Victoria was dangerous.”
Daniel understood.
The murder was only one part of the plan.
If Victoria died, Michael would inherit everything.
If she survived, he would declare her unstable.
Either way—
he won.
Except he had made one mistake.
He had recorded himself.
The Last Camera
There was one final file.
No timestamp.
No camera number.
Just a folder labeled:
CONTINGENCY.
Daniel opened it.
Michael appeared on screen.
He was sitting alone.
Looking directly into the camera.
For a moment, he said nothing.
Then:
“If you're watching this, something has gone wrong.”
Daniel leaned forward.
Michael continued:
“Victoria was never supposed to survive.”
A pause.
“But if she does…”
Michael smiled.
“…then the person watching this will already be compromised.”
Daniel's face changed.
Michael leaned closer.
“Because there is only one person who knows where the final account is.”
He whispered:
“Daniel.”
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Daniel slowly looked at Elena.
Then toward the hospital where Victoria was recovering.
Michael hadn't simply planned a murder.
He had planned for failure.
And somehow—
Daniel had been part of that plan long before he even knew it existed.
The Call
Daniel's phone rang.
Victoria.
He answered immediately.
“Victoria?”
Her voice was weak.
“Daniel…”
“What happened?”
“I remembered something.”
“What?”
A pause.
“The woman who came to see me.”
“The therapist?”
“Yes.”
“What about her?”
Victoria breathed shakily.
“She wasn't my therapist.”
Daniel froze.
“What?”
“She told me she was.”
“Who was she?”
Victoria whispered:
“She was Michael's sister.”
Daniel's blood ran cold.
Michael had no sister.
At least—
that's what every official record said.
Victoria continued:
“And she wasn't working for Michael.”
Daniel frowned.
“Then who was she working for?”
Victoria's voice dropped to a whisper.
“The person who has been controlling him.”
The call ended.
Daniel stared at the phone.
Behind him, the technician suddenly shouted.
“Mr. Cross!”
Daniel turned.
The computer screen had changed.
The hidden camera was transmitting again.
A live image appeared.
Someone was standing inside the mansion.
A woman.
She looked directly into the camera.
Then smiled.
Daniel stepped closer.
The woman raised one finger to her lips.
And whispered:
“Tell Victoria I'm sorry.”
The screen went black.
Daniel's heart pounded.
Because he knew that voice.
And now he understood the terrifying truth.
Michael had planned Victoria's murder for weeks.
But Michael wasn't the architect.
He was only following instructions.
And the person giving those instructions had just revealed herself.
The woman who had entered Victoria's life disguised as a trusted therapist—
was still inside the mansion.
Watching.
May you like
Waiting.
And she knew exactly where Mia was.
