Chapter 9 — The Betrayal at Midnight

Chapter 9 — The Betrayal at Midnight
The floorboard creaked again.
Daniel stood completely still.
Mia's fingers tightened around his hand.
“That's her,” she whispered.
“Who?”
“The woman from the recording.”
Elena rushed into the room.
“What happened?”
Daniel turned.
“Mia says someone was inside the house last night.”
Elena's face went pale.
“That's impossible.”
“The security system?”
“Active.”
“The doors?”
“Locked.”
“Then someone has access.”
Elena looked toward the hallway.
“No.”
Daniel noticed the fear in her expression.
“What?”
She shook her head.
“There's only one person I gave a key to.”
The Person Elena Trusted
Her name was Grace.
Grace had worked alongside Elena for years.
She had helped care for Mia.
She had brought groceries when Victoria was ill.
She had sat beside Elena during the investigation.
Most importantly—
Elena trusted her.
“I gave Grace a spare key,” Elena admitted.
Daniel's expression hardened.
“When?”
“Three months ago.”
“Why?”
“Because she was helping me.”
“With what?”
“Finding Catherine.”
Daniel stared at her.
“You never told me.”
“I thought she was protecting us.”
Mia suddenly whispered:
“She isn't.”
Everyone looked at her.
“How do you know?”
Mia pointed toward the hallway.
“I heard her talking to Michael.”
Silence.
Elena's face collapsed.
“No.”
Mia nodded.
“She said she knew where we kept the recorder.”
Midnight
At exactly midnight, every light in the mansion went out.
Victoria woke immediately.
The backup generator failed.
Then the alarm system went silent.
Not disabled.
Silenced.
Daniel ran toward Victoria's room.
“Stay here!”
He opened the door.
Empty.
His heart stopped.
“Victoria?”
No answer.
“Mia?”
Nothing.
He ran into the corridor.
Elena appeared from the opposite end.
“They're gone.”
Daniel grabbed her shoulders.
“Where?”
“I don't know.”
Then they heard a scream.
Mia.
From downstairs.
Daniel sprinted toward the sound.
The Betrayal
Mia was standing beside the grand staircase.
A hand was covering her mouth.
Grace stood behind her.
In the other hand was a phone.
Elena stopped.
“Grace?”
Grace turned.
Her expression was cold.
“I told you not to interfere.”
Elena looked devastated.
“Why?”
Grace smiled bitterly.
“Because you never understood what was happening.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“Let her go.”
Grace shook her head.
“You don't give orders anymore.”
“Who are you working for?”
Grace hesitated.
Then answered:
“Michael.”
Elena whispered:
“You promised.”
Grace looked at her.
“I promised to survive.”
Victoria
Daniel heard a door slam upstairs.
He looked toward the staircase.
“Where is Victoria?”
Grace smiled.
“Exactly where she was supposed to be.”
Daniel's blood ran cold.
“What did you do?”
“Nothing.”
“Where is she?”
Grace pointed toward the basement.
Daniel immediately ran.
Elena followed.
Grace didn't stop them.
That frightened Daniel more than anything.
The Basement
The basement door was locked.
Daniel kicked it open.
Victoria was inside.
Her wrists were tied.
But she was alive.
Daniel rushed toward her.
“Victoria!”
She looked up.
“Daniel…”
He cut the restraints.
“Are you hurt?”
“No.”
“Where's Mia?”
Victoria's expression changed.
“She wasn't with me.”
Daniel froze.
“What?”
“Grace brought me here.”
“Where is Mia?”
Victoria shook her head.
“I don't know.”
Daniel turned toward the stairs.
Then he heard something.
A child's voice.
From behind the wall.
“Daddy!”
Daniel ran toward it.
“Mia!”
The voice came again.
“Daddy!”
Daniel examined the wall.
A hidden door.
He found the latch.
It opened.
Mia was inside.
Alone.
Terrified.
Daniel pulled her into his arms.
“I've got you.”
She clung to him.
“She said you wouldn't come.”
“Who?”
“Grace.”
Elena's Mistake
Elena stood in the doorway.
Tears streamed down her face.
“I trusted her.”
Daniel looked at her.
“She knew where everything was.”
Elena nodded.
“I told her.”
“Everything?”
“I told her about Catherine.”
“Richard?”
“Yes.”
“Michael?”
“Yes.”
“Victoria?”
Elena closed her eyes.
“Yes.”
Daniel stared at her.
“You gave her the entire case.”
“I thought she was helping.”
Mia interrupted.
“She asked me questions too.”
Daniel looked down.
“What questions?”
“Where Daddy keeps the recordings.”
“And?”
“I lied.”
Daniel smiled faintly.
“What did you tell her?”
Mia whispered:
“I told her the recorder was in the library.”
Daniel realized what had happened.
Grace had walked directly into a trap.
The Fake Recorder
Daniel had moved the real recorder days earlier.
The one Grace had found was a decoy.
It contained harmless recordings.
But there was another surprise.
The decoy was connected to a tracking device.
Daniel checked his phone.
A signal was moving.
“She's leaving.”
Elena looked terrified.
“With the recorder?”
“Yes.”
Daniel stood.
“Then we follow her.”
Victoria grabbed his arm.
“No.”
“Why?”
“She wants you to.”
Daniel stopped.
Victoria continued:
“This was too easy.”
Elena looked at her.
“What do you mean?”
“Grace wanted us to find Mia.”
Daniel's face changed.
“She wanted us to rescue her.”
“Exactly.”
The Real Betrayal
The mansion doors suddenly locked.
Every window sealed.
A message appeared on the security monitor.
WELCOME BACK, DANIEL.
Then another.
MIDNIGHT WAS ONLY THE BEGINNING.
Daniel stared at the screen.
Michael's voice came through the speakers.
“You really thought Grace betrayed you?”
Daniel looked around.
“What do you want?”
Michael laughed.
“Grace never worked for me.”
Daniel's blood ran cold.
“Then who?”
A second voice answered.
A woman's voice.
The same woman from Mia's recording.
“You should have listened to Catherine.”
Victoria went pale.
Daniel looked at her.
“You know that voice?”
Victoria shook her head.
“No.”
The woman laughed softly.
“You do.”
The Woman Behind the Voice
A face appeared on the security monitor.
Daniel stared.
Victoria stopped breathing.
Elena whispered:
“Impossible.”
The woman on the screen was older.
Elegant.
Calm.
She looked directly into the camera.
“My name is Margaret Vale.”
Catherine's mother.
Emily's mother.
The woman everyone believed had died fifteen years earlier.
Daniel stared.
“But you're dead.”
Margaret smiled.
“That is what Michael wanted everyone to believe.”
The Real Purpose
Margaret continued:
“You've been chasing Michael.”
Daniel said:
“Yes.”
“You've been chasing Richard.”
“Yes.”
“And you think they are the architects.”
Daniel waited.
“They aren't.”
“Then who is?”
Margaret smiled.
“I am.”
Victoria stepped forward.
“Why?”
Margaret's expression became cold.
“Because Michael destroyed my family.”
Daniel frowned.
“Then why protect him?”
“I didn't.”
She paused.
“I created him.”
The room became silent.
Margaret explained that Michael had been part of a network built to control wealth, identities, and inheritances.
Richard was an operative.
Michael was an enforcer.
But the plan involving Mia belonged to someone else.
Someone who had been preparing it long before Michael married Victoria.
Margaret.
The Midnight Deal
Margaret offered Daniel a choice.
“Bring me the original recordings.”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
“Then Victoria dies.”
Victoria stepped forward.
“Daniel, don't.”
Margaret continued:
“Bring me the recordings, the ledger, and Catherine's evidence.”
“And Mia?”
Margaret smiled.
“Mia stays with you.”
Daniel didn't believe her.
“You expect me to trust you?”
“No.”
Margaret looked directly into the camera.
“I expect you to understand.”
“Understand what?”
“Mia isn't your enemy.”
Daniel frowned.
“Then why does everyone want her?”
Margaret's face became serious.
“Because she inherited something Michael could never steal.”
“What?”
“Proof.”
Grace Returns
The front door opened.
Grace walked inside.
She wasn't carrying the recorder.
Daniel immediately understood.
The decoy had never mattered.
Grace had been testing them.
She looked at Elena.
“I am sorry.”
Elena shook her head.
“You betrayed me.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Grace's eyes filled with tears.
“Because my daughter is alive.”
Elena froze.
“What?”
“Michael has her.”
Daniel stared.
“Who?”
Grace whispered:
“Emily.”
Catherine's sister.
The woman everyone believed Michael had buried.
Daniel's mind raced.
Grace continued:
“He promised to release her if I delivered Victoria.”
Victoria stepped backward.
“You were going to trade me?”
Grace began crying.
“I had no choice.”
Daniel stared at her.
“There is always a choice.”
Grace looked at him.
“Not when they have your child.”
The Final Betrayal
Then the mansion doors opened again.
Police flooded the foyer.
Daniel spun around.
The police chief entered.
Grace looked shocked.
Margaret's face disappeared from the monitor.
The chief raised his weapon.
“Everyone on the floor.”
Daniel stared.
“You're working for Michael.”
The chief smiled.
“No.”
He looked toward the ceiling cameras.
“We've been listening.”
He held up a warrant.
“Michael's network has been under investigation for years.”
Daniel didn't move.
“Then why didn't you arrest him?”
“Because we needed the ledger.”
Daniel looked toward Elena.
The betrayal had been another layer of the trap.
Grace had betrayed Elena.
Margaret had manipulated Michael.
Michael had manipulated everyone.
And now—
the police had been waiting for the evidence to surface.
The chief turned to Daniel.
“Where is the real recorder?”
Daniel looked at Mia.
She smiled faintly.
Then whispered:
“Daddy?”
“Yes?”
“Can I show them?”
Daniel nodded.
Mia reached inside her stuffed rabbit.
She removed the real recorder.
The room fell silent.
Grace stared.
Elena covered her mouth.
Victoria began to cry.
Daniel looked at the tiny device.
Everything Michael had tried to destroy was inside it.
Every threat.
Every conversation.
Every lie.
Every name.
And as Mia handed it to the police chief, the final recording began playing automatically.
Michael's voice filled the mansion:
“If anyone finds this, it's already too late.”
A pause.
Then:
“Because the person you should fear isn't me.”
The recording ended.
Everyone stared at one another.
Daniel's phone vibrated.
One final message appeared.
YOU FOUND THE RECORDING.
Then another:
NOW FIND THE WOMAN WHO MADE ME.
Daniel looked toward the dark staircase.
Somewhere beyond the mansion walls, Margaret Vale had disappeared.
And Elena suddenly whispered:
“Daniel…”
He turned.
“What?”
She pointed at Mia.
The little girl was staring at the screen.
A new photograph had appeared.
It showed Mia standing beside Margaret.
The timestamp was from yesterday.
Mia's face went white.
“I've never met her.”
Daniel stared at the photograph.
Then he noticed something in the background.
A familiar black car.
Richard's car.
And beside it—
a woman holding Emily's hand.
Emily was alive.
But she wasn't being held prisoner.
She was walking willingly.
And for the first time, Daniel realized the most terrifying possibility of all:
May you like
Emily wasn't being rescued from Michael.
She might have been helping him.
