Chapter 10 – The Betrayal Inside Moretti House

Chapter 10 – The Betrayal Inside Moretti House

The first sound we heard was not a gunshot.

It was a lock turning.

The storage facility went completely dark.

No lights.

No cameras.

No security system.

Only the sound of rain hitting the metal roof above us.

For a few seconds, nobody moved.

Because everyone in that room understood the same thing.

Someone had found us.

Emma grabbed my hand.

"Mommy..."

Her voice was barely a whisper.

I immediately pulled her behind me.

Every instinct I had as a mother took over.

Forget the empire.

Forget the investigation.

Forget the powerful men fighting over billions.

There was only one thing that mattered.

My daughter.

Alessandro stepped forward.

His entire body changed.

The man who had spent the last week pretending to be calm disappeared.

What remained was the man people feared.

The man who built an empire by surviving enemies.

"Marco."

His voice was low.

"Get Maria and Emma out."

Marco nodded.

But before he could move...

A voice came from the darkness.

"Still protecting the helpless, Alessandro?"

Everyone froze.

The lights suddenly returned.

Slowly.

One by one.

And standing at the entrance of the storage unit...

Was someone none of us expected.

Robert Hayes.

The chief financial officer of Moretti Holdings.

The man who had pretended to be shocked during the board meeting.

The man who had acted offended when Alessandro questioned him.

The man who had spent fifteen years inside the Moretti empire.

I stared at him.

"You followed us."

Robert smiled.

"Not exactly."

Alessandro's expression was unreadable.

"Who sent you?"

Robert laughed.

"You still don't understand."

He stepped inside.

"Nobody sent me."

A pause.

"I chose."

The words were worse than any confession.

Because betrayal hurt differently when someone claimed it proudly.

Alessandro looked at him.

"How long?"

Robert tilted his head.

"How long what?"

"How long have you been working against me?"

Robert smiled.

"Against you?"

He looked around the storage unit.

"No."

He pointed toward the evidence.

"Against the version of Moretti Holdings your father created."

That answer surprised me.

Because for a moment...

Robert didn't sound like a criminal.

He sounded like someone who believed he was right.

"I spent fifteen years watching your family destroy people."

His voice hardened.

"Workers."

"Partners."

"Families."

"Anyone who became inconvenient."

Alessandro didn't react.

"Then why stay?"

Robert's smile disappeared.

"Because someone had to."

The room became silent.

"You think your father built an empire?"

Robert stepped closer.

"He built a machine."

"A machine that ate everyone who stood too close."

I looked at Alessandro.

He didn't defend his father.

He didn't argue.

Because somewhere inside...

He already knew.

"But Victor was different."

Robert continued.

"He understood what had to happen."

There it was.

Victor again.

"You worked with him."

Alessandro said it as a statement.

Robert nodded.

"Yes."

"Why?"

Robert looked at the video camera.

"Because Victor promised to end the cycle."

A bitter laugh escaped him.

"Of course, he didn't mention his plan included becoming the next person sitting on the throne."

Alessandro's eyes narrowed.

"You were never loyal to Victor."

"No."

Robert admitted.

"I was loyal to the idea."

The idea.

Everyone who betrayed someone had a reason.

A justification.

A story they told themselves.

But Daniel had learned something.

People who hurt others always believed they were the exception.

Robert reached toward the evidence box.

Marco immediately moved.

"Don't."

Robert stopped.

Then smiled.

"You really think this ends with Victor?"

Nobody answered.

"That is your problem, Alessandro."

Robert looked at him.

"You inherited the empire."

"You inherited the enemies."

"But you never inherited the truth."

A strange feeling moved through me.

Because Robert was afraid.

Not of Alessandro.

Of something bigger.

"What do you mean?"

Alessandro asked.

Robert looked toward the camera.

"The video is incomplete."

My heart stopped.

"What?"

Robert smiled.

"Daniel recorded everything."

"He knew someone would come after him."

"He knew Victor would try to erase the evidence."

"Then why leave an incomplete video?"

Alessandro asked.

Robert's answer was quiet.

"Because the final part wasn't stored here."

Silence.

"Where is it?"

Robert looked at Emma.

My entire body went cold.

"No."

I stepped forward.

"No."

Robert's expression changed.

For the first time, he looked uncomfortable.

"I didn't know about the child."

Alessandro moved instantly.

The calm disappeared.

"Look at me."

Robert looked at him.

"You involve her..."

Alessandro's voice dropped.

"...and you won't leave this building."

Robert swallowed.

Because he believed him.

"Daniel trusted someone."

Robert continued.

"Someone who could protect the final evidence."

"Who?"

Robert hesitated.

Then:

"Your mother."

Alessandro froze.

Again.

The impossible woman.

The dead woman.

The woman who seemed to exist everywhere.

"Where is she?"

Robert looked away.

"I don't know."

A lie.

Alessandro knew.

I knew.

Everyone knew.

"You do."

Alessandro stepped closer.

"You know where she is."

Robert remained silent.

Then a phone rang.

Not Alessandro's.

Not Marco's.

Robert's.

He looked at the screen.

And his face changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

He answered.

Nobody spoke.

But we heard a voice through the speaker.

"Robert."

Victor.

Robert immediately stood straighter.

Like a soldier hearing a command.

"You failed."

Victor's voice was calm.

Too calm.

Robert's face turned pale.

"I can fix this."

"No."

Victor answered.

"You can't."

The call ended.

Robert stared at the phone.

Then whispered:

"He knew."

Alessandro looked at him.

"Knew what?"

Robert looked toward the door.

"He knew I would betray him."

A terrible silence followed.

Because suddenly everyone understood.

Robert was not the mastermind.

He was another piece on the board.

Then Marco's phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed.

"Sir..."

Alessandro looked at him.

"What?"

Marco hesitated.

"We have a problem."

"What problem?"

"The mansion."

A pause.

"Someone broke into Moretti House."

My blood went cold.

"Who?"

Marco looked at Alessandro.

"The intruder didn't steal money."

"The intruder didn't steal documents."

Another pause.

"They went directly to your private archive."

Alessandro's eyes hardened.

"My mother's files."

Marco nodded.

"And sir..."

"What?"

"The security footage shows the person entering."

Silence.

"Who?"

Marco looked at the screen.

Then said the words nobody expected.

"It was Maria."

The world stopped.

Every thought disappeared.

Every sound vanished.

I looked at Alessandro.

He looked at me.

Confusion.

Shock.

Betrayal.

"No."

I whispered.

"I was here."

Marco shook his head.

"Not you."

A pause.

"Someone using your old employee access code."

My heart sank.

Someone had used my identity.

Someone had framed me.

But why?

Then Alessandro noticed something.

A detail nobody else had seen.

The footage.

The person entering the mansion.

The posture.

The movement.

The way she walked.

He stared.

Then quietly said:

"That's not Maria."

Everyone looked at him.

"Sir?"

Alessandro stepped closer to the screen.

His eyes narrowed.

"That person knows our security."

"Knows the camera positions."

"Knows my archive location."

A pause.

"They aren't pretending to be her."

He looked at me.

"They are trying to make us believe they are."

And then...

A message appeared on the security system.

One sentence.

One warning.

THE TRUTH BELONGS TO THE PERSON WHO SURVIVES LONG ENOUGH TO TELL IT.

Alessandro stared at the words.

Then he understood.

This was never just about destroying the Moretti empire.

It was about controlling the story.

Controlling who would be believed.

Controlling who would be blamed.

And the person behind it all had just made the most dangerous move yet.

They had turned the people closest to Alessandro against each other.

Because the greatest betrayal...

Was not when an enemy attacked.

May you like

It was when an enemy convinced you that your family was the enemy.
