Chapter 4 – Alessandro’s Hidden Investigation

Chapter 4 – Alessandro’s Hidden Investigation
The Moretti mansion had never felt like a home.
Not really.
It was beautiful.
Expensive.
Impossibly grand.
But beauty and warmth were not the same thing.
For three years, I had walked through those marble halls carrying laundry baskets, cleaning supplies, and trays of coffee.
I knew every painting.
Every staircase.
Every room where wealthy people laughed while discussing things that could ruin ordinary lives.
But that night...
For the first time...
I realized the mansion had secrets.
And Alessandro Moretti had been collecting them.
Nobody slept.
Not after Vanessa Bell revealed who she really was.
Not after the notebook exposed a name connected to Daniel's death.
Not after the woman who claimed to be carrying Alessandro's child admitted she had entered his life with another purpose.
The engagement party ended without a toast.
Without a celebration.
Without a future.
The guests left quietly.
Some embarrassed.
Some afraid.
Some already calling reporters.
Because powerful people could survive scandal.
But they could not survive uncertainty.
At midnight, I sat in the family sitting room with Emma asleep beside me.
She had finally stopped crying.
Her small hand was still wrapped around the edge of my sweater.
She always slept like that after something scared her.
Like she was afraid the world would disappear if she let go.
I understood that feeling.
I had felt it for three years.
The door opened.
I immediately stood.
Alessandro entered.
Without the jacket.
Without the perfect public image.
Without the mask.
For the first time, I saw how exhausted he was.
Not weak.
Never weak.
But tired.
A man carrying too many wars alone.
"How is she?"
He looked toward Emma.
I followed his gaze.
"Sleeping."
He nodded.
A quiet moment passed.
Then he said something I never expected.
"I'm sorry."
I stared at him.
"Sir?"
His jaw tightened slightly.
"I brought danger into your life."
I almost laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because it sounded impossible.
A man like Alessandro Moretti apologizing to a housekeeper.
"No."
I shook my head.
"You didn't."
His eyes met mine.
"Vanessa entered this house because of me."
"Daniel died because of people connected to this."
His voice lowered.
"You and your daughter paid the price."
The mention of Daniel still hurt.
Even after three years.
Especially after three years.
Because grief was strange.
People thought time healed everything.
It didn't.
Time simply taught you how to carry the wound.
"I need to ask you something."
Alessandro sat across from me.
"How long have you known Daniel was suspicious before he died?"
The question surprised me.
I looked down.
"About a month."
"Tell me everything."
So I did.
For the first time in three years...
I told someone everything.
Not the official version.
The real one.
Daniel had found missing safety reports.
Workers injured but never documented.
Materials that did not meet regulations.
Payments moving between construction companies.
He had saved copies.
He planned to expose them.
Then came the threats.
The anonymous calls.
The warning left on our apartment door.
The night before he died, he told me something I never forgot.
"Maria, if something happens to me, don't believe the accident story."
Alessandro listened without interrupting.
When I finished, he asked:
"Where are the copies?"
My heart sank.
"I don't know."
"Daniel hid them."
"Where?"
"I don't know."
Then I remembered.
A small detail.
Something meaningless at the time.
"He told me once..."
Alessandro leaned forward.
"What?"
"He said powerful people hide things in expensive places because they think ordinary people never look there."
For the first time that night...
Alessandro almost smiled.
Almost.
"Daniel was smarter than they thought."
The next morning, I discovered something.
Alessandro had been investigating Vanessa long before the party.
Not because he suspected a fake pregnancy.
Because he suspected something much older.
His private office was unlike any room in the mansion.
No decorations.
No family portraits.
No luxury furniture meant to impress visitors.
Only a large desk.
Screens.
Documents.
Files.
A room designed for one purpose.
Finding the truth.
On the wall were photographs.
Not random ones.
Connections.
People.
Companies.
Dates.
At the center was a photograph of Anthony Bell.
Vanessa's father.
"You knew."
My voice surprised him.
Alessandro looked up.
"I suspected."
"You knew who she was?"
"Not completely."
He walked toward the wall.
"Vanessa Cole appeared three years ago."
"Before that, there was almost no record."
"Her education history had gaps."
"Her employment history was suspicious."
"Her financial records were too clean."
"Then why did you let her stay?"
That question had bothered me.
If Alessandro investigated everyone...
Why allow her close?
His answer was quiet.
"Because I wanted to know what she wanted."
I looked at him.
"You were testing her."
"Yes."
"And she was testing you."
He nodded.
"Yes."
That was when I understood.
Their relationship had been a chess game from the beginning.
Except Vanessa had underestimated one thing.
She thought she was playing against Alessandro.
She didn't realize he had been studying the entire board.
He opened a file.
Inside were photographs.
Vanessa meeting people.
Vanessa entering offices.
Vanessa transferring money.
But one picture caught my attention.
A construction site.
Three years earlier.
Daniel's construction site.
My hands became cold.
"Why do you have this?"
Alessandro was silent.
Then:
"Because I found it two months ago."
My head lifted.
"What?"
"I reopened old investigations connected to my father."
He looked at the photograph.
"Your husband's death was one of them."
The room felt smaller.
"You investigated Daniel?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
His expression changed.
"Because the company involved in his project was secretly purchased by one of my father's old enemies."
A pause.
"Anthony Bell."
The name felt like a storm.
The man behind Vanessa.
The man connected to Daniel.
The man who had disappeared.
"Did Daniel know?"
Alessandro nodded slowly.
"I believe he did."
"Then why didn't you tell me?"
His silence answered before his words did.
"Because I wasn't sure."
"And because if I was wrong..."
He looked at me.
"I would destroy the only thing you had left."
That answer hurt more than I expected.
Because for the first time...
I saw the difference between a powerful man and a cruel man.
Powerful men could still be afraid of causing harm.
Suddenly, Marco entered.
"Sir."
Alessandro turned.
"What?"
"We found something from Vanessa's suite."
"What?"
Marco placed a small envelope on the desk.
"We believe she was going to use this tonight."
Alessandro opened it.
Inside was a document.
A legal agreement.
I didn't understand all the details.
But I understood one line.
Transfer of controlling shares upon declaration of heir.
My blood ran cold.
"What is that?"
Alessandro read silently.
Then his face became unreadable.
"This was her plan."
"What plan?"
He looked at me.
"The pregnancy was never about a baby."
He placed the document down.
"It was about inheritance."
I stared at the paper.
A fake child.
A fake pregnancy.
A fake future.
All designed to give Vanessa control over the Moretti empire.
But then Alessandro noticed something else.
A handwritten note attached to the document.
His eyes narrowed.
"What is it?"
I asked.
He didn't answer immediately.
Then he handed it to me.
The handwriting was unfamiliar.
But the message was clear.
Three words.
Three words that made Alessandro's expression change for the first time.
"Daniel knew everything."
The room went silent.
Because if that message was true...
Then Daniel wasn't just a victim.
He was a witness.
And someone had spent three years making sure his truth stayed buried.
Alessandro picked up his phone.
"Marco."
"Yes, sir?"
"Find every person connected to Daniel Hayes' investigation."
A pause.
"Alive or dead."
Then he looked at me.
"Because we're no longer investigating Vanessa."
His voice became colder.
"We're investigating who killed your husband."
Outside the office windows, the storm finally began to clear.
But inside the Moretti mansion...
May you like
The real storm had just begun.
