Chapter 5 – The Empire Under Attack

Chapter 5 – The Empire Under Attack
The first attack did not come with a gun.
It did not come with a warning.
It came with a headline.
MORETTI EMPIRE COLLAPSING: BILLIONAIRE HEIR ACCUSED OF FRAUD AND SECRET AFFAIRS
The words appeared on every major news website before sunrise.
By six in the morning, the Moretti mansion was no longer surrounded by silence.
It was surrounded by cameras.
Reporters stood behind the gates.
Helicopters circled above the property.
Every financial network in the country was broadcasting the same question:
Was Alessandro Moretti losing control of his empire?
I stood in the kitchen holding a cup of coffee that had already gone cold.
Three years working in that mansion had taught me one thing.
Rich people were not protected from disasters.
They were simply surrounded by more expensive walls when disasters arrived.
But this was different.
This was not a scandal.
This was an attack.
A carefully planned one.
Alessandro entered the kitchen at exactly 7:15.
No one else in the house could keep that kind of schedule after a night like the one before.
But he did.
Dark suit.
Perfectly arranged tie.
Calm expression.
The same man the world saw.
Except I noticed the difference.
His eyes.
They were colder.
"Good morning."
I looked at him.
"Is it?"
A small pause.
Then, surprisingly, he smiled.
Not a happy smile.
A tired one.
"Fair point."
He poured himself coffee.
I watched him carefully.
"Are you going to tell me what happened?"
He looked toward the television.
The news showed images of Vanessa leaving the mansion months earlier.
The media had already created a story.
A billionaire.
A pregnant fiancée.
A broken engagement.
A hidden financial scandal.
They didn't know the truth.
They didn't care about the truth.
They cared about the story.
"The information came from inside."
Alessandro's words were quiet.
I frowned.
"Inside the company?"
He nodded.
"Someone leaked private documents."
"What documents?"
"Old contracts."
"Financial transfers."
"Internal investigations."
My stomach tightened.
"About Daniel?"
"No."
He looked at me.
"Worse."
He changed the channel.
A business analyst appeared on screen.
"Sources close to Moretti Holdings claim that Alessandro Moretti inherited a company built on questionable practices and may have concealed illegal activities connected to previous executives."
I understood immediately.
They weren't attacking him personally.
They were attacking the foundation beneath him.
"Your father's company?"
Alessandro nodded.
"My father built enemies."
"Many."
"And someone wants those enemies to believe I am vulnerable."
The front door opened.
Marco entered quickly.
That alone told me something was wrong.
Marco was not a man who rushed.
"Sir."
Alessandro looked at him.
"What?"
"Three major investors have frozen their accounts."
"Names."
Marco handed him a tablet.
Alessandro read.
His expression didn't change.
But his hand tightened slightly.
"Impossible."
"What?"
"They've all been contacted by the same person."
I watched his face.
"Who?"
He looked up.
"Anthony Bell."
The name again.
The ghost behind everything.
The man who was supposed to be gone.
"He's alive."
It wasn't a question.
Alessandro nodded.
"I believe so."
"How?"
"Because dead men don't move twenty billion dollars."
The number shocked me.
Twenty billion.
A number so large it almost stopped feeling real.
A number that could buy cities.
A number that could destroy thousands of ordinary lives without anyone noticing.
Then another phone rang.
This time, it was mine.
I froze.
Almost nobody called me.
Especially not that early.
I looked at the screen.
Unknown number.
Something inside me warned me not to answer.
But I did.
"Hello?"
Silence.
Then a voice.
A man's voice.
"You should have stayed invisible, Maria."
My blood froze.
I couldn't breathe.
Alessandro noticed immediately.
He stood.
"Who is it?"
The voice continued.
"You were just a maid."
"You cleaned rooms."
"You kept your head down."
"Then your daughter opened her mouth."
My fingers tightened around the phone.
"Who are you?"
A quiet laugh.
"The same person who warned your husband."
Everything stopped.
Daniel.
The word didn't need to be spoken.
I knew.
"What did you do to him?"
The voice became colder.
"What needed to be done."
The call ended.
For several seconds...
I couldn't move.
Then Alessandro took the phone from my hand.
"Marco."
His voice had changed.
Everyone in the room felt it.
The calm was gone.
Not replaced by anger.
Something more dangerous.
Purpose.
"Trace the call."
Marco immediately moved.
I looked at Alessandro.
"He knew about Daniel."
"I know."
"He admitted it."
"I know."
"He threatened me."
His eyes met mine.
"I know."
The thing I expected was anger.
Instead, I saw something else.
Responsibility.
"I'm sorry."
Again.
That word.
From him.
A man who almost never apologized.
"You don't have to be."
"I do."
His voice was low.
"If Daniel died because someone wanted to hurt my family..."
He paused.
"And you were dragged into it because of me..."
"No."
I interrupted.
He looked surprised.
I continued.
"My husband didn't die because of you."
I swallowed.
"He died because someone believed they could do whatever they wanted."
A pause.
"And now they know someone is finally looking."
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then Emma appeared in the doorway.
Her hair messy.
Her pajamas covered in cartoon animals.
She rubbed her eyes.
"Mama?"
Everything changed.
Because no matter how dangerous the world became...
She was still a little girl.
Alessandro immediately softened.
"Good morning, Emma."
She looked at him.
Then at the television.
Then at the reporters outside.
"Are those people angry?"
He crouched.
"No."
She tilted her head.
"Are they bad?"
A difficult question.
One no adult in the room could answer easily.
Alessandro thought for a moment.
Then said:
"Some people are afraid of the truth."
Emma considered this.
Then asked:
"Does truth win?"
The question was innocent.
But it hit harder than anything else.
Alessandro looked at her.
Then at me.
Then he answered:
"Yes."
A pause.
"But sometimes it has to fight first."
That afternoon, the attack became worse.
The Moretti board announced an emergency meeting.
Several executives demanded Alessandro temporarily step down.
The media called it a leadership crisis.
Investors panicked.
Employees feared layoffs.
And then...
The final blow came.
A video appeared online.
It showed Alessandro and Vanessa arguing privately.
Edited.
Manipulated.
Made to look like Alessandro threatened her.
The headline:
BILLIONAIRE FIANCÉ EXPOSED AS ABUSIVE CONTROLLED TYRANT
The internet exploded.
People who had praised him yesterday condemned him today.
That was the strange power of public opinion.
Most people didn't need proof.
They only needed a story they enjoyed believing.
Alessandro watched the video once.
Then turned it off.
"They want me angry."
I looked at him.
"Why?"
"Because angry people make mistakes."
"So what will you do?"
He looked at the documents spread across his desk.
The fake pregnancy.
The stolen money.
The connection to Daniel.
The attack on his company.
Then he said something I would remember forever.
"I will let them believe they are winning."
I frowned.
"Why?"
Because for the first time...
A small smile appeared.
Not kindness.
Not warmth.
Strategy.
"Because people reveal themselves when they think they've already won."
That night, another message arrived.
Not to Alessandro.
To me.
A photograph.
My apartment.
My old apartment.
The one where Daniel and I lived.
The one I had left after his death.
The one I thought nobody remembered.
Under the picture were six words.
WE KNOW WHERE YOU STARTED.
I showed Alessandro.
He stared at it.
Then called Marco.
"Increase security."
"For the mansion?"
Alessandro looked at me.
"No."
A pause.
"For Maria and Emma."
The next morning, the Moretti empire officially went to war.
But Anthony Bell made one mistake.
He attacked Alessandro Moretti's company.
He attacked his reputation.
He attacked his future.
But he underestimated something.
Something even more dangerous than wealth.
He underestimated a man protecting the family he had chosen.
And he underestimated a mother who had already lost everything once.
Because a person who has nothing left to lose...
May you like
Is the one person powerful enemies should fear.
