Chapter 7 – The Man Who Killed Daniel

Chapter 7 – The Man Who Killed Daniel

The letter remained open on the table for almost five minutes.

Nobody touched it.

Nobody spoke.

Because sometimes the most dangerous discoveries were not the ones that revealed a secret.

They were the ones that proved the entire story you believed was wrong.

Alessandro Moretti had built his entire life on one fact.

His mother was dead.

Everyone knew it.

The newspapers.

The business world.

The Moretti family records.

The official reports.

She had died when Alessandro was a child.

A tragic accident.

A closed chapter.

A memory buried beneath decades of empire building.

But now...

A letter written in her handwriting sat in front of him.

And it began with words no dead woman should have been able to write.

"Alessandro..."

"If you are reading this, then your father failed to protect you."

I watched his face carefully.

The world knew Alessandro Moretti as a man who never showed emotion.

A man who could walk into a negotiation with millions at stake and never blink.

But this was different.

Money could be replaced.

Companies could be rebuilt.

Enemies could be defeated.

But a lie about your own mother?

That was something else.

"Alessandro..."

My voice was quiet.

He didn't respond.

He continued reading.

His fingers tightened around the paper.

After several seconds, he finally spoke.

"My father told everyone she died in a car accident."

I said nothing.

Because there was nothing to say.

Some wounds were too personal for comfort.

"Did you know?"

I looked at him.

"Know what?"

"That my family had secrets like this."

The question hurt.

Because I heard what he was really asking.

Did I know something about his life that he didn't?

Was everyone around him hiding things?

"No."

I shook my head.

"I only knew Daniel was afraid."

A pause.

"And I knew someone wanted him silent."

Alessandro looked back at the letter.

Then he said something that made the room colder.

"Maybe Daniel wasn't investigating my company."

He looked at the hidden compartment.

"Maybe he was investigating my family."

The letter contained only three pages.

But those three pages destroyed twenty years of assumptions.

Alessandro read every line slowly.

Then he handed it to me.

"I need you to read this."

I hesitated.

"This is private."

He looked at me.

"Not anymore."

I unfolded the paper.

The handwriting was elegant.

Careful.

The handwriting of someone who knew every word mattered.

"My son,"

"If you have found this, it means I failed to return."

"I need you to understand something."

"Your father was not the man you believed him to be."

I looked up.

Alessandro remained silent.

I continued.

"He built an empire by convincing people that loyalty mattered."

"But loyalty was only valuable when it benefited him."

"When people became inconvenient, he removed them."

My stomach tightened.

Because the words sounded exactly like the warnings Daniel had given me.

"There was a man who discovered the truth."

"A good man."

"A man who believed innocent workers deserved protection."

My hands shook.

Daniel.

"His name was Daniel Hayes."

I stopped reading.

The room disappeared for a moment.

The words blurred.

Because Daniel's name was there.

In the letter.

Written years ago.

Alessandro noticed.

"What?"

I couldn't speak.

I simply handed the page back.

He read the line.

And his expression changed.

"Your mother knew Daniel."

I nodded slowly.

"Yes."

The question was impossible.

How could a woman believed dead know my husband?

How could Daniel be connected to the Moretti family before I ever entered this mansion?

Then Alessandro turned the page.

The final paragraph.

"The man who destroyed Daniel's life is not a stranger."

"He is someone you trust."

Silence.

Alessandro stared at the sentence.

"Someone I trust."

The words sounded almost impossible.

Because Alessandro Moretti trusted very few people.

Marco entered the room.

"Sir."

Alessandro folded the letter immediately.

"What?"

"We found the owner of the offshore accounts."

"Who?"

Marco hesitated.

Then answered.

"Anthony Bell."

Of course.

The name that kept appearing.

The enemy behind Vanessa.

The ghost behind the attacks.

But Marco continued.

"There's more."

Alessandro looked at him.

"Anthony Bell did not move the money alone."

"Who helped him?"

Marco placed a folder on the table.

"We traced payments from Bell's companies."

A pause.

"To someone inside Moretti Holdings."

My heart sank.

Someone inside.

Again.

"Name."

Marco opened the folder.

Alessandro read it.

Then froze.

Not dramatically.

Not visibly.

Just enough.

"Who is it?"

I asked.

He didn't answer.

That scared me more than anything.

Because Alessandro always had an answer.

Finally, he said:

"Victor Moretti."

The name meant nothing to me.

But the reaction around the room said everything.

Marco looked away.

Like he didn't want to say it.

"Who is Victor?"

I asked.

Alessandro looked at me.

"My uncle."

The air changed.

Victor Moretti.

The man who had helped raise Alessandro after his father's death.

The man who had managed several divisions of Moretti Holdings.

The man Alessandro had publicly called his second father.

"The man who taught me business."

His voice was quiet.

"The man who protected me after my mother died."

A pause.

"The man who told me my father was a victim."

I understood.

The betrayal was not financial.

It was personal.

"Could he be wrongfully accused?"

I asked.

Alessandro looked at the evidence.

The money.

The dates.

The connections.

"No."

The answer came instantly.

Too instantly.

"You already suspected him."

He didn't deny it.

"Why?"

He looked toward the window.

"Because after my father died, Victor was the one person who benefited most."

"Then why keep him close?"

Alessandro was quiet.

Finally:

"Because sometimes the best place to watch an enemy..."

"...is beside you."

That afternoon, Alessandro secretly arranged a meeting.

Not with Vanessa.

Not with Anthony Bell.

With Victor Moretti.

I wasn't supposed to be there.

But Alessandro asked me to come.

"Why?"

I asked.

"Because Daniel's story matters."

He looked at Emma playing quietly nearby.

"And because this started with your family too."

Victor arrived at six.

He was exactly what I imagined.

Older.

Elegant.

Silver hair.

A calm smile.

The kind of man who looked trustworthy.

The kind of man people trusted because he wanted them to.

When he entered the office, he smiled.

"Alessandro."

They shook hands.

Almost like family.

Almost.

"I heard your engagement party became interesting."

Victor laughed.

"Vanessa always had a dramatic side."

Alessandro watched him.

"You knew?"

A pause.

"Knew what?"

"That she wasn't pregnant."

Victor's smile disappeared.

Only briefly.

But it happened.

"Alessandro..."

"I asked you a question."

Victor sighed.

"I suspected."

"How long?"

Another pause.

"Several months."

My hands curled into fists.

Several months.

He knew.

And he said nothing.

"Why?"

Victor looked at Alessandro.

"Because I was trying to protect you."

The answer was so familiar.

Everyone who hid the truth always used the same excuse.

Protection.

"From what?"

Victor didn't answer.

Alessandro stepped closer.

"Did you know Anthony Bell was alive?"

Silence.

That was the answer.

Victor looked away.

And Alessandro saw it.

The confirmation.

"You knew."

Victor finally spoke.

"Your father destroyed many lives."

"He created enemies."

"He created consequences."

"My father died because of those consequences?"

Victor looked at him.

"No."

A pause.

"He died because he trusted the wrong people."

The words were carefully chosen.

Too carefully.

Alessandro's voice lowered.

"Did you kill him?"

The room froze.

Victor looked genuinely hurt.

"Is that what you think of me?"

Nobody answered.

Then Victor smiled.

And the smile was wrong.

Too calm.

Too controlled.

"You really don't know, do you?"

Alessandro narrowed his eyes.

"Know what?"

Victor looked toward me.

Then toward Emma.

And said:

"Daniel Hayes was never killed because he found documents."

My blood went cold.

"He was killed because he found the person who ordered your mother's disappearance."

Alessandro stopped breathing.

"What?"

Victor continued.

"The accident."

"The missing records."

"The fake investigation."

"All of it."

He looked directly at Alessandro.

"Your mother was not killed by your enemies."

A pause.

"She was killed by someone protecting the Moretti empire."

The room became silent.

Alessandro whispered:

"Who?"

Victor looked at him.

And answered:

"Your father."

Nobody moved.

Because if Victor was telling the truth...

Then the enemy was not outside the Moretti empire.

It was inside.

And the man Alessandro spent his entire life trying to honor...

Was the reason everything had fallen apart.

But then Victor made one final mistake.

He underestimated the one thing Alessandro valued more than power.

The truth.

Alessandro picked up the phone.

"Marco."

"Yes, sir?"

"Cancel everything."

A pause.

"Prepare the private investigation team."

He looked at Victor.

The man who raised him.

The man who lied to him.

The man who knew about Daniel.

"Because now..."

Alessandro said quietly.

"I want the truth."

Victor's expression finally changed.

Because he realized something.

The boy he helped create was gone.

The empire's heir had become something more dangerous.

A man with nothing left to protect except the truth.

And somewhere in the city...

Anthony Bell learned that Alessandro Moretti had stopped playing defense.

The hunt had begun.
