Chapter 9 – The Missing Evidence

Chapter 9 – The Missing Evidence

The most dangerous thing about the truth was not discovering it.

It was discovering that someone had already tried to erase it.

For three days, Alessandro Moretti turned the entire world upside down.

Not publicly.

Not loudly.

The world still believed the Moretti empire was collapsing.

The media still celebrated every falling stock number.

Every anonymous accusation.

Every rumor.

They thought Alessandro was trapped.

They thought he was desperate.

They thought the man who had controlled an empire before the age of thirty had finally met an enemy he could not defeat.

They were wrong.

Because while everyone watched the fire...

Alessandro was searching for who had started it.

The private investigation team worked around the clock.

Old financial records.

Archived company files.

Construction documents.

Police reports.

Everything connected to Daniel Hayes.

Everything connected to Anthony Bell.

Everything connected to the disappearance of Alessandro's mother.

But there was one problem.

The evidence was missing.

"Nothing?"

Alessandro stood behind his desk.

Marco looked exhausted.

"Almost nothing."

"Almost?"

Marco placed a folder down.

"The original investigation files from Daniel's accident are gone."

My stomach tightened.

"Gone?"

Marco nodded.

"Not destroyed."

"Removed."

That difference mattered.

Someone had not wanted the evidence destroyed.

They wanted the evidence controlled.

"Who had access?"

Alessandro asked.

Marco opened another file.

"Police archives."

"Company records."

"Insurance investigators."

A pause.

"And Moretti Holdings."

Silence.

Because once again...

The answer led back home.

I stood beside the desk.

"Someone inside the company erased everything."

Alessandro nodded.

"Yes."

"Someone powerful enough to reach every department."

He looked at the documents.

"Someone who has been preparing for this for years."

The thought was terrifying.

This was not a sudden betrayal.

It was a plan.

A long one.

That afternoon, Alessandro called an emergency meeting with his executive board.

Not because he trusted them.

Because he needed to see who was afraid.

The conference room was filled with powerful people.

Men and women who controlled companies.

Influenced politicians.

Moved billions of dollars with a phone call.

But when Alessandro entered...

Nobody spoke.

Because they had forgotten something important.

A wounded lion was still a lion.

He placed a folder on the table.

"I know someone inside this company has been working with Anthony Bell."

The room froze.

Several executives immediately reacted.

Too quickly.

One looked down.

One reached for water.

One avoided eye contact.

Alessandro noticed everything.

He always did.

"I will give the person responsible one opportunity."

His voice was calm.

"Come forward."

Nobody moved.

"Otherwise..."

He paused.

"...I will find you."

A few seconds passed.

Then one executive laughed nervously.

"Alessandro, this is absurd."

The man was Robert Hayes.

Chief financial officer.

A person who had worked for the Moretti family for fifteen years.

"You are allowing personal emotions to affect business decisions."

Robert leaned back.

"Perhaps the investigation should wait until your situation with Vanessa is resolved."

A subtle attack.

But Alessandro saw it.

"Interesting."

Robert frowned.

"What?"

"You immediately mentioned Vanessa."

The room became quiet.

Alessandro continued.

"I never said this investigation involved her."

Robert's expression changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

The trap had worked.

Security moved instantly.

Robert stood.

"What is this?"

Marco stepped forward.

"Please remain seated."

Robert looked around.

"This is ridiculous."

Alessandro walked closer.

"You have been transferring company information for eight months."

Robert laughed.

"You can't prove that."

Alessandro smiled.

A cold, empty smile.

"That's why I haven't arrested you."

Robert stopped.

"Yet."

Later that evening, Robert's office was searched.

And they found something.

Not enough to prove everything.

But enough to reveal the next piece.

A hidden drive.

Encrypted.

Containing thousands of files.

The investigation team spent hours breaking through the security.

Finally...

The files opened.

The first document was a list.

Names.

Dates.

Payments.

The second was worse.

A photograph.

Daniel Hayes.

Standing beside Alessandro's mother.

Again.

But this time, there was something written underneath.

A note.

"Subject has discovered Project Phoenix."

I looked at Alessandro.

"What is Project Phoenix?"

He didn't answer immediately.

Because he had seen the same words before.

"My father's old company files."

"Your father knew about it?"

"Yes."

"What was it?"

Alessandro opened another document.

A classified internal report.

The title:

PROJECT PHOENIX: SUCCESSION CONTROL STRATEGY

The words made my skin crawl.

It was not a business project.

It was a plan.

A plan to control the future of the Moretti empire.

The report described methods.

Influence.

Manipulation.

Political connections.

Financial pressure.

And one section caught my attention.

PRIMARY OBJECTIVE: Maintain control regardless of heir stability.

"Regardless of heir stability?"

I whispered.

Alessandro kept reading.

Then his expression changed.

"Alessandro?"

He didn't answer.

I moved closer.

And saw the final page.

SUCCESSION CONTINGENCY: If Alessandro refuses cooperation, replace leadership through legal inheritance challenge.

My heart dropped.

"Replace you?"

He nodded.

"But how?"

He turned the page.

The answer was there.

A name.

Victor Moretti.

The uncle.

The protector.

The second father.

The man who had been standing beside Alessandro for decades.

But then Marco entered.

His face was serious.

Very serious.

"Sir."

Alessandro looked up.

"What?"

"We found the original evidence from Daniel's case."

For the first time all day...

Hope appeared.

"Where?"

Marco hesitated.

"At a storage facility outside the city."

"Who owned it?"

Marco looked at me.

Then Alessandro.

"Daniel Hayes."

My breath stopped.

A place nobody knew about.

A storage unit Daniel had rented secretly.

A place containing the evidence he died protecting.

We drove there immediately.

The storage facility was old.

Forgotten.

The kind of place where people hid things they never wanted found.

Unit 417.

That was the number.

Daniel's number.

Alessandro unlocked the door.

The inside was almost empty.

A few boxes.

An old desk.

A broken chair.

For a moment, disappointment appeared.

Then Emma stepped forward.

"Mommy."

I looked down.

"What?"

She pointed.

"That's where Daddy hid the music."

Everyone froze.

Behind the desk was a small wooden panel.

Hidden.

Again.

Alessandro opened it.

Inside was a small black case.

The evidence.

My hands shook as he opened it.

Inside:

Photographs.

Documents.

Audio recordings.

And one final item.

A video camera.

Daniel's final message.

Alessandro connected it to a laptop.

The screen flickered.

Static.

Then...

Daniel appeared.

Older.

Tired.

Afraid.

But alive.

My knees almost gave out.

Because after three years...

I saw my husband again.

Daniel looked directly into the camera.

And spoke.

"If you're watching this..."

He swallowed.

"...then they failed to stop me."

The room went silent.

"I discovered who was controlling Moretti Holdings."

A pause.

"It wasn't Anthony Bell."

Everyone looked at Alessandro.

Daniel continued.

"Anthony Bell is only a weapon."

My heartbeat increased.

"The person behind everything..."

Daniel looked terrified.

"...is someone Alessandro trusts more than anyone."

The video glitched.

Then Daniel said the name.

The name that made Alessandro step backward.

The name that made Marco swear under his breath.

The name that changed everything.

"Victor Moretti."

The screen went black.

Nobody spoke.

Because the evidence was finally found.

But the victory lasted only seconds.

Alessandro's phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

A voice spoke.

A familiar voice.

"You found Daniel's video."

Alessandro's eyes narrowed.

"Victor."

A quiet laugh.

"You always were smarter than your father."

"Where are you?"

Another laugh.

"Does it matter?"

Then Victor said:

"The problem with finding evidence, Alessandro..."

A pause.

"...is that someone always has to protect it."

The call ended.

At that exact moment...

The lights in the storage facility went out.

Then we heard footsteps.

Someone had followed us.

Someone knew where the evidence was.

Someone was coming to take it back.

And this time...

They were not trying to destroy a company.

May you like

They were trying to erase the truth forever.
