Chapter 3 – The Woman Behind the Mask

Chapter 3 – The Woman Behind the Mask

The scream from upstairs changed the atmosphere instantly.

Not a scream of surprise.

Not a scream of fear.

It was the sound of someone who had discovered something they were never supposed to find.

Every person in the ballroom looked toward the staircase.

The same staircase Vanessa had walked down less than an hour earlier.

The same staircase where everyone had watched her announce the child that would supposedly unite two powerful families.

Now every step leading to her private suite looked like the entrance to a crime scene.

Alessandro didn't run.

That was the difference between him and everyone else.

Panic belonged to people who had lost control.

Alessandro Moretti had built his entire life around never losing control.

He simply walked.

Slowly.

Purposefully.

The crowd parted before him.

I followed only because Marco stopped me.

"Mrs. Hayes."

I froze.

"Stay here."

His eyes moved to Emma sleeping against my shoulder.

"Your daughter has seen enough tonight."

He was right.

She had.

But something inside me refused to leave.

Not after everything.

Not after standing in that ballroom and watching powerful people try to destroy me with a single word.

Maid.

The word still burned.

"I need to know what happened."

Marco studied me.

Then looked toward Alessandro disappearing upstairs.

Finally, he stepped aside.

"Stay behind security."

I nodded.

The second floor of the Moretti mansion was different from the rest of the house.

The first floor was designed to impress.

The second floor was designed to hide.

Private offices.

Family rooms.

Locked archives.

Places where conversations happened without witnesses.

Vanessa's suite sat at the end of the eastern hallway.

The most private room in the mansion.

The room where she had planned to become the future mother of the Moretti heir.

Now it looked like the place where her downfall had begun.

The door was open.

That alone shocked me.

Alessandro never allowed private rooms to remain unsecured.

Inside, three security officers stood frozen.

One was holding a laptop.

Another had a stack of documents.

The third looked like he wanted to disappear.

Alessandro stood in the center of the room.

Silent.

"What did you find?"

The officer holding the laptop swallowed.

"Sir..."

He looked uncomfortable.

"Miss Cole wasn't only hiding the pregnancy device."

Alessandro waited.

"She was hiding files."

"What kind of files?"

The officer placed the laptop on the table.

"Financial records."

The screen displayed hundreds of documents.

At first glance, they looked ordinary.

Bank transfers.

Property payments.

Investment accounts.

But Alessandro immediately noticed something.

Because men like him didn't become powerful by looking at what was obvious.

They looked at patterns.

"Zoom in."

The officer did.

A list of transactions appeared.

Multiple payments.

Different companies.

Different names.

But all connected to one account.

An offshore account.

Alessandro's expression changed slightly.

"How much?"

The officer answered quietly.

"Approximately twenty million dollars."

The hallway became silent.

Vanessa had not simply bought a fake pregnancy belly.

She had been moving money.

A lot of money.

"Where did it come from?"

Alessandro asked.

The officer hesitated.

"We're still tracing it."

"Give me your best guess."

The officer looked at the documents.

"Companies connected to Moretti Holdings."

My stomach dropped.

Because that meant something worse than Vanessa lying.

It meant she had access to his empire.

Alessandro walked toward the desk.

He picked up a folder.

Inside were copies of contracts.

His contracts.

His company documents.

His signatures.

Except...

Some of the signatures weren't his.

"Forgery."

His voice was almost a whisper.

But everyone heard it.

Vanessa appeared at the doorway.

Nobody had noticed her leave the ballroom.

Her face was pale.

But she was no longer crying.

The tears were gone.

The frightened woman had disappeared.

What stood there now was someone else.

Someone colder.

Someone prepared.

"You searched my room."

Her voice carried anger.

Not fear.

Alessandro turned.

"Yes."

"Without permission."

"No."

His eyes hardened.

"With suspicion."

For the first time, Vanessa smiled.

Not the elegant smile from magazines.

A different one.

A dangerous one.

"Do you know what your problem is, Alessandro?"

Nobody moved.

"You think everyone around you is a piece on a chessboard."

She stepped inside.

"You investigate people."

"You test people."

"You wait for them to betray you."

Her voice grew sharper.

"But maybe the reason everyone leaves..."

"...is because you never let anyone get close."

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Because she had chosen the perfect weapon.

A personal wound.

Alessandro's greatest weakness.

His inability to trust.

But she made one mistake.

She thought she knew him.

She didn't.

"You are correct about one thing."

Alessandro placed the forged contract on the desk.

"I don't trust easily."

He looked directly at her.

"But I trust patterns."

A pause.

"And your pattern is deception."

Vanessa's expression tightened.

"You think you've figured me out?"

"No."

He stepped closer.

"I think I haven't figured out enough."

The security officer interrupted.

"Sir."

He held up another item.

A small notebook.

"We found this hidden behind the mirror."

Vanessa's face changed.

Only for a second.

But Alessandro saw it.

I saw it.

Everyone saw it.

The notebook was old.

Black leather.

No name.

No label.

Alessandro opened it.

The first page contained a list.

Names.

Dates.

Amounts.

At the bottom of each page was a symbol.

A small crown.

"What is this?"

Alessandro asked.

Nobody answered.

Then Vanessa whispered:

"Give me that."

Too quickly.

Too desperately.

Alessandro looked at her.

And that was the moment he understood.

The notebook mattered more than the fake pregnancy.

Much more.

He turned the page.

The next entry stopped him.

A name.

A name I recognized.

Because I had seen it before.

On a newspaper article.

Three years earlier.

The day Daniel died.

Alessandro noticed my expression.

"Mrs. Hayes?"

I couldn't breathe.

The name on the page blurred.

But I knew it.

Because it had haunted me.

Because it belonged to the man who had been listed as the project manager on Daniel's construction site.

The man who claimed Daniel's death was an accident.

"Why do you know that name?"

Alessandro's voice was quieter now.

I looked at him.

"Because..."

My voice shook.

"That's the man who signed my husband's death report."

The room went completely still.

Alessandro looked back at the notebook.

Then at Vanessa.

Something changed.

This was no longer about an inheritance.

No longer about a fake child.

No longer about an engagement.

This had become personal.

"Explain."

Vanessa said nothing.

"Explain why this name is in your notebook."

Still nothing.

Alessandro walked closer.

"Vanessa."

The softness was gone.

"Who are you really?"

For several seconds...

She looked like she might finally break.

Then she laughed.

Quietly.

Almost sadly.

"You really want to know?"

Alessandro said nothing.

She looked around the room.

At the mansion.

At the empire.

At the life she had tried to enter.

Then she said:

"My name isn't Vanessa Cole."

Everyone froze.

The woman who had spent months beside Alessandro Moretti.

The woman who had convinced the world she loved him.

The woman who claimed to carry his heir...

Smiled.

"My real name is Vanessa Bell."

Alessandro's eyes narrowed.

"Bell?"

She nodded.

"The daughter of Anthony Bell."

The room changed instantly.

Even Marco looked shocked.

Because Anthony Bell was not an ordinary man.

He was the man who had spent twenty years trying to destroy the Moretti family.

Alessandro's father had once called him his greatest enemy.

The man disappeared after a failed business war.

Everyone believed he was dead.

But Vanessa continued.

"My father didn't die."

A pause.

"He built something bigger."

The storm outside intensified.

"And I didn't come here to marry you."

She looked directly at Alessandro.

"I came here to take everything your family stole from mine."

No one moved.

No one spoke.

Then Alessandro asked the only question that mattered.

"What does this have to do with Maria Hayes's husband?"

Vanessa's face changed.

Just slightly.

But enough.

And that was when I realized...

Daniel's death had never been an accident.

It had been connected to this mansion.

To this family.

To this woman.

Alessandro closed the notebook.

His voice was calm.

Almost frighteningly calm.

"Nobody leaves."

Again.

Those words.

The same words that had trapped us inside the ballroom.

But this time they meant something different.

Because Vanessa was not just a liar.

She was an enemy who had entered his home.

And somehow...

She had been connected to the death of my husband.

Alessandro looked at me.

"Mrs. Hayes."

"Yes, sir?"

"Tomorrow morning, you and I are going to find out why Daniel really died."

My heart stopped.

Because after three years...

Someone powerful finally believed me.

But as I looked at Vanessa Bell standing inside the mansion...

I understood something terrifying.

The fake pregnancy had never been the real betrayal.

May you like

It was only the first layer of a much deeper lie.
