CHAPTER 1 — THE KNOCK AT TWO

CHAPTER 1 — THE KNOCK AT TWO

The minute hand reached twelve.

The clock changed.

2:00 PM.

Three hard knocks struck the front door.

Bang.

Bang.

Bang.

Nobody moved.

For one strange second, Clara could hear nothing except her own breathing.

Then a voice came from the other side.

"Federal agents. Open the door."

Julian's face lost all color.

His mother stopped smiling.

Arthur Vance slowly lowered his champagne glass.

Chloe looked from one person to another.

"What is this?" she whispered.

Julian stared at the front door.

"That's impossible."

Clara remained on the floor.

One hand was still wrapped around her stomach.

The other rested beside the shattered watch.

She looked at Julian.

And smiled.

Not the weak, frightened smile he had expected.

A calm one.

Almost peaceful.

Julian noticed.

His eyes narrowed.

"Clara."

She said nothing.

"What's happening?"

Still nothing.

Arthur moved toward the door.

"Everyone remain calm."

Another knock.

Harder this time.

"Federal agents! Open the door!"

Arthur's expression finally cracked.

"Julian."

"I didn't do anything."

"I didn't ask what you did."

Julian swallowed.

Chloe stepped closer to him.

"Jules, what's happening?"

He pulled his arm away from her.

"Stay here."

"Where else am I supposed to go?"

Julian looked toward Clara.

For the first time that afternoon, something resembling fear appeared in his eyes.

He understood.

Not everything.

But enough.

Clara had known.

She had known something was coming.

And somehow, she had been waiting for two o'clock.

Arthur reached the door.

Before he could touch the handle, it opened from the outside.

Four agents entered.

Dark jackets.

Badges.

Weapons.

One held up a warrant.

"Arthur Vance?"

Arthur straightened.

"Yes."

"You are the president and controlling shareholder of Vance Holdings?"

"I am."

"We have a federal warrant to search this property and seize financial records, electronic devices, and assets connected to an ongoing investigation."

Arthur's jaw tightened.

"On what grounds?"

The agent looked at him.

"Fraud."

A pause.

"Money laundering."

Another pause.

"Wire fraud."

Arthur's face hardened.

"This is absurd."

The agent continued.

"Conspiracy to commit securities fraud."

Nobody spoke.

Then:

"And obstruction of a federal investigation."

Beatrice gasped.

"Arthur?"

Arthur turned sharply.

"Don't say anything."

The agent looked toward Julian.

"And Julian Vance."

Julian froze.

"Yes?"

"We'll need you to remain where you are."

Julian looked at Clara.

She was still on the floor.

Still holding her stomach.

Still watching.

The agent noticed her.

"Ma'am, are you injured?"

Clara nodded.

"I was struck."

Julian immediately stepped forward.

"It was an accident."

Clara looked at him.

"Was it?"

The room went silent.

Julian's face hardened.

"Clara, don't."

The agent turned toward him.

"You struck your wife?"

Julian's voice faltered.

"I—"

Clara interrupted.

"He punched me in the stomach."

The agent's expression changed.

"Someone call an ambulance."

"No."

Everyone looked at Clara.

She breathed carefully.

"I need to stay here."

The agent frowned.

"You've been injured."

"I'm eight months pregnant."

"I understand."

"No."

Clara looked directly at him.

"You don't."

She glanced at the wall clock.

"Not yet."

The agent studied her for a moment.

Then he nodded toward another agent.

"Get medical assistance here."

Julian suddenly stepped closer.

"Clara, what have you done?"

She looked up.

"What do you mean?"

"You knew."

"About what?"

"The raid."

Arthur snapped:

"Julian!"

But it was too late.

The room had heard him.

Clara's smile returned.

Small.

Cold.

"I didn't know."

Julian stared at her.

"You're lying."

"No."

She slowly pushed herself upright against the side of the table.

"I knew exactly."

Arthur's face went pale.

"What did you do?"

Clara looked at him.

"I stopped protecting you."

The agents began moving through the house.

One headed toward Arthur's study.

Another toward the library.

A third began photographing documents scattered across the dining room.

The fourth remained near Clara.

Julian watched everything collapse around him.

Then he noticed something.

The agents weren't surprised.

They weren't searching blindly.

They knew exactly where to go.

One walked straight toward the hidden wall panel behind Arthur's portrait.

Arthur reacted instantly.

"Wait."

The agent ignored him.

He pressed the frame.

Nothing happened.

Arthur exhaled.

Then the agent pressed the lower corner.

A click sounded.

The wall opened.

Behind it was a steel compartment.

Beatrice covered her mouth.

Julian stared.

"What is that?"

Arthur said nothing.

The agent opened the compartment.

Inside were several black folders.

Hard drives.

Encrypted USB devices.

And a small metal box.

Arthur stepped forward.

"Those are private business records."

The agent looked at him.

"They're evidence."

Arthur's voice rose.

"You don't understand what you're doing."

The agent smiled faintly.

"We understand exactly what we're doing."

He lifted the metal box.

"Is this yours?"

Arthur didn't answer.

"Mr. Vance?"

Arthur remained silent.

Clara watched him.

She had spent months wondering whether she would feel satisfied when this moment came.

She didn't.

She felt tired.

Very tired.

Her baby moved beneath her hand.

Clara closed her eyes for a second.

"Mommy's here."

Julian heard her.

His expression changed.

"Is the baby okay?"

Clara opened her eyes.

"Don't pretend you care now."

"I do care."

"You called our child a mistake."

"I was angry."

"You punched me."

"I lost control."

"You brought another woman to our baby's shower."

Julian looked at Chloe.

She looked away.

Clara's voice became quiet.

"And you told everyone she was carrying the real heir."

Julian lowered his eyes.

"I didn't mean it."

"Yes, you did."

He looked back at her.

"Clara, please."

That word almost made her laugh.

Please.

After fourteen months of lies, humiliation, betrayal, and cruelty—

he was finally saying please.

She shook her head.

"You should have thought about that before you raised your hand."

A paramedic arrived.

"Ma'am, we need to examine you."

Clara nodded.

As they helped her onto the stretcher, she suddenly gripped the paramedic's arm.

"My baby."

"We'll monitor both of you."

Clara looked toward Julian.

Their eyes met.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Julian asked:

"Why?"

Clara frowned.

"Why what?"

"Why did you do this?"

She stared at him.

"You mean why did I expose your family?"

He nodded.

"You could have left."

Clara smiled sadly.

"I tried."

Julian's face changed.

"You never knew."

"I knew enough."

She looked toward Arthur.

"Your father didn't just steal from investors."

Arthur shouted:

"Don't!"

Clara continued.

"He used shell companies to move millions through offshore accounts."

The agent looked at Arthur.

"Ma'am, don't discuss the investigation."

Clara nodded.

But she wasn't finished.

"He also used Vance Holdings to purchase information from competitors."

Arthur's expression became furious.

"You're lying."

Clara looked at him.

"I have the invoices."

Silence.

"The bank transfers."

Silence.

"The encrypted emails."

Arthur's face drained.

"And the recordings."

Julian stared.

"Recordings?"

Clara looked at him.

"You remember all those late nights when I was supposedly asleep?"

Julian said nothing.

"I wasn't sleeping."

She touched her wedding ring.

"I was listening."

The ambulance doors closed.

But before they did, Clara saw something.

Chloe.

Standing alone beside the ruined cupcake table.

The young woman was staring at her.

There was no smugness anymore.

No confidence.

Only fear.

Clara wondered why.

Then Chloe whispered something.

Clara couldn't hear it.

"What?"

Chloe stepped closer.

An agent immediately blocked her.

But Chloe spoke louder.

"Clara..."

Clara waited.

"Your husband isn't the person you should be afraid of."

Clara's expression changed.

"What did you say?"

Chloe looked toward Arthur.

Then Julian.

Then back at Clara.

"I didn't know what he was planning."

Julian shouted:

"Chloe!"

She flinched.

Clara stared at her.

"What is he planning?"

Chloe shook her head.

"I can't."

"Then don't."

Clara looked away.

The ambulance doors began closing.

Chloe's voice came one last time.

"He knows about the baby."

The doors slammed shut.

Clara froze.

The vehicle began moving.

Her hand slowly moved over her stomach.

"What does that mean?"

No one answered.

TWO HOURS LATER

The hospital room smelled of antiseptic and clean sheets.

Clara lay beneath a white blanket while a monitor tracked the baby's heartbeat.

Fast.

Steady.

Alive.

A doctor entered.

"Your baby is stable."

Clara closed her eyes.

Relief washed over her.

"But we're keeping you overnight for observation."

"Okay."

The doctor left.

Clara stared at the ceiling.

She should have felt victorious.

Arthur's company was being dismantled.

Federal agents were inside the Vance estate.

Julian was under investigation.

The life they had built was collapsing.

But Chloe's words wouldn't leave her mind.

He knows about the baby.

The door opened.

Clara expected a nurse.

Instead, an FBI agent entered.

He was the same man who had spoken to her at the mansion.

"Mrs. Vance."

"Ms. Vance."

He nodded.

"Fair enough."

He pulled up a chair.

"I'm Special Agent Daniel Mercer."

Clara looked at him.

"How bad is it?"

"For the Vances?"

"Yes."

He hesitated.

"Bad."

"Good."

Mercer gave her a strange look.

"You've been working with us for months."

It wasn't a question.

Clara looked toward the window.

"Yes."

"You knew the raid would happen today."

"Yes."

"You knew the warrant had been signed."

"Yes."

"And you deliberately arranged the baby shower at the Vance residence."

Clara looked at him.

"I needed all of them in one place."

Mercer nodded.

"You were very careful."

"I had to be."

"Why?"

Clara looked down at her wedding ring.

"Because if Julian knew what I was doing, I wouldn't have survived long enough to give you the evidence."

Mercer was silent.

Then he placed a folder on the table.

"There is something you should know."

Clara looked at it.

"What?"

"The investigation has uncovered evidence that someone inside Vance Holdings knew about our case."

Her heart tightened.

"Someone leaked information."

"Yes."

"Who?"

"We don't know."

Clara stared at him.

"But someone knew."

"Yes."

"And they may have known about the raid."

Mercer nodded.

Clara suddenly remembered Chloe.

"Then maybe Chloe knows."

"Possibly."

Mercer stood.

"We're questioning everyone."

He reached the door.

Then stopped.

"Mrs. Vance?"

"Yes?"

"You said earlier that Julian called the unborn child 'the real heir.'"

Clara nodded.

"Do you know what he meant?"

"No."

Mercer looked serious.

"Because our investigators found something strange in Arthur Vance's records."

"What?"

"A trust."

Clara sat up slightly.

"For whom?"

Mercer looked at her.

"Your unborn child."

Clara's breath caught.

"That's impossible."

"The trust was established before you married Julian."

"By whom?"

Mercer hesitated.

"Your name appears on the original paperwork."

Clara stared at him.

"My name?"

"Yes."

"But I never signed anything."

"We know."

"Then who did?"

Mercer closed the door behind him.

"That's what we're trying to find out."

That night, Clara couldn't sleep.

The baby's heartbeat was steady.

The hospital hallway was quiet.

She looked at the clock.

2:17 AM.

Then her phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

She hesitated.

Then answered.

"Hello?"

Silence.

"Who is this?"

A man's voice finally came through.

"You should have left Julian when you had the chance."

Clara's blood ran cold.

"Who are you?"

"You think the raid ended everything."

"Who are you?"

"You opened the door."

"What door?"

"The one your husband has been hiding from you."

Clara sat upright.

"What are you talking about?"

The caller laughed softly.

"Ask Julian why he married you."

The call ended.

Clara stared at the phone.

Then she noticed something.

A message had arrived.

One photograph.

She opened it.

Her heart stopped.

It was a picture of her—

taken inside the hospital.

Taken less than ten minutes earlier.

Someone had photographed her through the window.

Below the photograph was a single sentence:

THE BABY ISN'T YOUR ONLY SECRET.

Clara's hands began to tremble.

Outside the room, footsteps stopped.

She looked toward the door.

The handle slowly turned.

And Clara realized that the raid at two o'clock hadn't been the beginning of the war.

It had only been the moment her enemies realized she was fighting back.

The door opened.

Julian stood there.

Two FBI agents were behind him.

His face was pale.

His expensive suit was gone.

His cufflinks were missing.

For the first time, he looked like an ordinary man.

A frightened one.

He stared at Clara.

"We need to talk."

Clara didn't answer.

Julian stepped into the room.

"There is something about this baby that you don't know."

Clara's hand moved instinctively over her stomach.

"What?"

Julian looked toward the agents.

Then back at her.

"I didn't marry you because of love."

Clara's eyes narrowed.

"Then why?"

Julian swallowed.

"Because my father told me to."

A cold silence filled the room.

Clara whispered:

"Why?"

Julian's eyes filled with something she had never seen before.

Fear.

"Because before you met me..."

He stopped.

Clara waited.

Julian finally said:

"Your family had already been connected to ours."

Clara's heart pounded.

"My family?"

Julian nodded.

"And your baby..."

He looked at her stomach.

"...was the reason they chose you."

Clara stared at him.

The room seemed to tilt.

"What are you saying?"

Julian took one step backward.

"I'm saying your pregnancy was never an accident."

The monitor beside Clara continued its steady rhythm.

Beep.

Beep.

Beep.

And beneath the blanket, the baby kicked.

Once.

Twice.

Clara stared down.

Then slowly looked back at Julian.

For the first time since the raid began—

she wasn't thinking about revenge.

May you like

She was thinking about the child inside her.

And wondering whether the entire Vance family had been waiting for this baby long before she ever knew Julian's name.
