CHAPTER 9 — THE NIGHT CLARA DISAPPEARED

CHAPTER 9 — THE NIGHT CLARA DISAPPEARED

At 2:17 a.m., the hospital lost power.

At 2:18, every security camera on the fourth floor went black.

At 2:19, Clara Morgan disappeared.

And by 2:23, the Vance family believed she was dead.

The first sign that something was wrong was not the darkness.

It was the silence.

Mercer stood outside Clara's hospital room, speaking quietly with two federal agents.

Julian had already been taken downstairs.

Richard Hale was under guard.

For the first time in months, Clara was surrounded by people who were supposed to be protecting her.

Then the lights flickered.

Once.

Twice.

The corridor went dark.

"Stay where you are!" Mercer shouted.

A second later, the emergency lights came on.

Red.

Dim.

Unnatural.

Mercer immediately turned toward Clara's room.

The door was open.

His stomach dropped.

"Clara?"

No answer.

He rushed inside.

The bed was empty.

The blanket was still warm.

The IV line had been disconnected.

A small amount of blood stained the edge of the sheet.

Mercer froze.

"Lock the floor down."

An agent ran into the corridor.

"She's gone."

Mercer stared at the empty bed.

"No."

He stepped closer.

Clara's phone was still on the bedside table.

Her purse was still there.

Her shoes were underneath the chair.

Nothing had been taken.

Nothing except Clara.

And the unborn child she carried.

THE FIRST PANIC

Within minutes, the entire hospital was sealed.

Security guards blocked every exit.

Elevators were stopped.

Parking gates were closed.

Police surrounded the building.

Mercer watched the security footage.

Nothing.

Every camera on the fourth floor had gone offline simultaneously.

He turned toward the hospital administrator.

"Who has access to the camera system?"

"IT."

"Who else?"

"Security."

"Who can disable the cameras remotely?"

The administrator hesitated.

"Someone with administrative credentials."

Mercer's expression hardened.

"Get me the access log."

Five minutes later, an agent brought him a tablet.

"There."

Mercer looked at the screen.

The system had been accessed at 2:17 a.m.

Username:

RHALE_ADMIN

Mercer stared.

"Richard."

But Richard was still downstairs.

Handcuffed.

Under federal guard.

Mercer rushed toward the interrogation room.

Richard looked up as Mercer entered.

"Where's Clara?"

Richard's expression changed.

"What?"

"Don't play games."

"I don't know where she is."

"You accessed the hospital security system."

"I didn't."

"The login says otherwise."

Richard laughed bitterly.

"You think I would use my own credentials?"

Mercer stopped.

"What?"

Richard leaned forward.

"Someone wanted you to think I took her."

Mercer's eyes narrowed.

"Who?"

Richard smiled.

"You're asking the wrong question."

JULIAN HEARS THE NEWS

Julian was sitting inside a federal vehicle when the door opened.

Mercer stood there.

"Get out."

Julian looked confused.

"Why?"

"Clara is missing."

Julian's face changed instantly.

"What?"

"She disappeared from the hospital."

"No."

"At approximately 2:19."

Julian pushed past him.

"Where is she?"

"We don't know."

"Where's the baby?"

Mercer didn't answer.

Julian stopped.

His face became completely white.

"Is she dead?"

"We don't know."

Julian's breathing became shallow.

"Then find her."

"We're trying."

"You're wasting time."

"Julian—"

"You don't understand."

Julian grabbed Mercer's coat.

"If my father learns she's gone, she'll never come back."

Mercer pulled away.

"Your father is already in custody."

Julian shook his head.

"No."

"Arthur is being interrogated."

"You think Arthur is the person I'm talking about?"

Mercer stared.

Julian looked toward the hospital.

"I'm talking about the person above him."

THE EMPTY ROOM

At 3:06 a.m., Mercer returned to Clara's room.

He noticed something he hadn't seen before.

A photograph.

It had been placed carefully on the pillow.

It showed Clara and her mother.

Young Clara.

Maybe ten years old.

Margaret stood behind her, smiling.

On the back of the photograph was a handwritten sentence.

Mercer turned it over.

If Clara disappears, don't look for her. Look for the person who benefits.

Mercer stared at the words.

Then another line appeared beneath it.

And never trust the man who claims he came to save her.

Mercer slowly looked toward the hallway.

Julian was standing there.

Watching him.

THE FAMILY LEARNS

By dawn, the news had reached the Vance estate.

Arthur Vance was still being questioned.

Beatrice was in a private room with her lawyer.

Chloe was sitting alone.

Then her phone rang.

She answered.

"Hello?"

A man's voice said:

"She's gone."

Chloe's expression changed.

"Who?"

"Clara."

Chloe stood.

"How?"

"The hospital."

She lowered her voice.

"Is she dead?"

"We don't know."

"Then find out."

The caller paused.

"Arthur wants confirmation."

Chloe's fingers tightened around the phone.

"What about the baby?"

Another pause.

"That's the problem."

Chloe looked toward the interrogation rooms.

"What do you mean?"

"The trust has already been activated."

She stopped breathing.

"Impossible."

"It happened forty-seven minutes ago."

"Who activated it?"

The voice answered:

"Clara."

Chloe's face went pale.

"No."

"Yes."

"She can't."

"Apparently, she can."

The call ended.

Chloe stared at the phone.

Then she whispered:

"She's not missing."

Her eyes hardened.

"She's running."

THE SECRET EXIT

At 4:12 a.m., Mercer discovered something strange.

The hospital had a basement tunnel.

It connected to an old service building across the street.

Most people didn't know it existed.

The security system showed movement there at 2:21 a.m.

Mercer watched the footage.

A woman wearing a hospital gown entered the tunnel.

Her face was covered.

She was walking slowly.

One hand rested on her stomach.

The timestamp was clear.

2:21.

Mercer paused the video.

"Zoom in."

The image sharpened.

It was Clara.

An agent stared.

"She walked out by herself?"

"Apparently."

Mercer shook his head.

"Why?"

Then he noticed something.

Someone was walking behind her.

A man.

Tall.

Dark coat.

Face hidden.

Mercer froze.

"Who is that?"

They enlarged the image.

The man's face became partially visible.

Mercer's expression changed.

"That's impossible."

"Who?"

Mercer whispered:

"Daniel Reed."

THE DEAD MAN

Daniel Reed was dead.

The hospital had confirmed it.

His body had been examined.

His death certificate had been issued.

Yet the camera showed him following Clara.

Mercer immediately called the morgue.

"Open the body."

The technician hesitated.

"Sir?"

"Now."

Twenty minutes later, Mercer stood inside the morgue.

The drawer opened.

Daniel Reed's body lay beneath the sheet.

Mercer pulled it back.

The face looked right.

The scars matched.

The fingerprints matched.

Everything appeared correct.

Then the technician said:

"There's something strange."

"What?"

"The body was registered as Daniel Reed."

"Yes."

"But the dental records don't match."

Mercer turned.

"What?"

The technician handed him the report.

"The body isn't Daniel Reed."

Mercer stared at it.

"Who is it?"

"We don't know."

Mercer's phone rang.

It was Julian.

"Did you find her?"

Mercer hesitated.

"We found footage."

"Of Clara?"

"Yes."

"Is she alive?"

"Apparently."

Julian exhaled.

"Thank God."

"But there's something else."

"What?"

"Daniel Reed may also be alive."

Silence.

Then Julian whispered:

"That's impossible."

Mercer looked at the body.

"That's what I thought."

CLARA'S SIDE

Clara opened her eyes.

Darkness surrounded her.

She tried to move.

Her wrists were free.

Her stomach hurt.

The room smelled like dust and old wood.

She slowly sat up.

"Where am I?"

A light turned on.

Clara froze.

A man stood across the room.

Daniel Reed.

Alive.

Clara's heart stopped.

"No."

Daniel smiled sadly.

"Hello, Clara."

She backed away.

"You died."

"I know."

"I saw your records."

"They were designed for you to see."

Clara stared.

"Who are you?"

Daniel stepped closer.

"The man your mother trusted."

"You're not Daniel."

He smiled.

"That's right."

Clara's breathing quickened.

"Then who?"

He reached into his coat.

He pulled out an old photograph.

Margaret.

Clara.

And a newborn baby.

Clara stared at the photograph.

Her hands began trembling.

"That's me."

"Yes."

"Who's the baby?"

The man looked at her.

"Your brother."

Clara's face went blank.

"I don't have a brother."

"You do."

"Where is he?"

The man smiled.

"That's why your mother disappeared."

Clara looked down at her stomach.

Then back at him.

"Why did you take me?"

"I didn't."

"What?"

He stepped aside.

Another door opened.

A woman entered.

Clara stopped breathing.

Her hair was shorter.

Her face older.

But there was no mistaking her.

The woman she'd been told was dead for years.

"Mom?"

Margaret Morgan's eyes filled with tears.

"Clara."

Clara covered her mouth.

"No."

Margaret rushed toward her.

Clara pulled away.

"Don't."

"Sweetheart—"

"Don't call me that."

Margaret stopped.

"You let me believe you were dead."

"I had to."

"You watched me marry Julian."

"I had to."

"You watched them hurt me."

"I was trying to protect you."

"By disappearing?"

Margaret's face crumpled.

"I thought if I stayed away, Arthur couldn't use me to reach you."

Clara shook her head.

"He still did."

"I know."

"He almost killed my baby."

Margaret looked at her stomach.

"I'm sorry."

Clara stared at her mother.

"Who is the father?"

Margaret's expression changed.

"That's the question you must never ask."

Clara's voice became cold.

"No."

She stepped forward.

"I'm done being protected by lies."

Margaret looked at the man.

He nodded.

Then Margaret finally said:

"Your baby's father is the reason Arthur built the entire Vance empire."

Clara stared.

"What does that mean?"

Margaret whispered:

"Your child isn't just the heir to the Morgan Trust."

A pause.

"Your child is the heir to something much older."

Clara's blood ran cold.

"What?"

Margaret looked toward the door.

"Something Arthur has spent twenty years trying to possess."

THE SEARCH

At sunrise, the police discovered Clara's abandoned hospital gown in the service tunnel.

Beside it was a small envelope.

Mercer opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

Clara.

Margaret.

Daniel Reed.

And another man.

Mercer stared at the fourth face.

He knew him.

Everyone in the Vance organization knew him.

But he had been dead for twelve years.

Mercer whispered:

"No."

Julian looked over his shoulder.

His face turned white.

"Who is that?"

Mercer didn't answer.

Julian stared at the photograph.

"That's my grandfather."

Mercer nodded.

"The man who supposedly died before Arthur inherited the company."

Julian looked at him.

"Why would Clara have a photograph of him?"

Mercer turned the photograph over.

There was writing on the back.

The empire was never Arthur's.

Below it:

It belonged to the child.

Julian's eyes widened.

"The child?"

Mercer looked toward the empty hospital room.

Then he understood.

Clara hadn't been kidnapped.

She had been taken somewhere safe.

Because someone knew the Vance family would never stop hunting her.

But there was something even more disturbing.

Clara had disappeared exactly when the Morgan Trust activated.

And the person who had taken her knew the truth about the baby.

Mercer folded the photograph.

"Find Clara."

Julian stared at him.

"Before my father does?"

Mercer shook his head.

"No."

He looked toward the sunrise.

"Before whoever is behind your father finds her."

THE LAST MESSAGE

At 6:47 a.m., every member of the Vance family received the same message.

One sentence.

No sender.

No number.

No explanation.

CLARA IS ALIVE.

Beatrice dropped her phone.

Arthur stopped speaking.

Chloe went pale.

Julian stared at the message for almost a minute.

Then another message arrived.

AND SHE KNOWS EVERYTHING.

Julian's hands began shaking.

A final message appeared.

THE NEXT PERSON TO DISAPPEAR WILL BE ONE OF YOU.

Then every phone went dark.

Across town, in a hidden house, Clara stood beside her mother.

She looked at the sleeping child inside the small crib.

Her baby.

Alive.

Protected.

For the first time since the attack, Clara allowed herself to breathe.

Then Margaret handed her a sealed envelope.

"Your grandfather left this for you."

Clara opened it.

Inside was a single sentence.

When Clara disappears, the truth begins.

She looked up.

"What happens now?"

Margaret's eyes filled with fear.

"Now?"

She whispered:

"Now they come for you."

Outside the house, headlights appeared in the darkness.

One vehicle.

Then another.

Then five more.

Clara looked through the window.

Her mother grabbed her arm.

"Don't move."

Clara stared at the approaching cars.

"Who are they?"

Margaret whispered:

"Not the Vances."

A pause.

"They're worse."

May you like

And somewhere in the distance, a car door slammed shut.

The hunt had begun.
