CHAPTER 3 — THE VANCE EMPIRE CRACKS

CHAPTER 3 — THE VANCE EMPIRE CRACKS

The lights came back on.

Clara's heart was pounding.

The hospital room was empty.

No Arthur.

No shadow.

No voice.

Only the steady glow of the monitor beside her bed.

Beep.

Beep.

Beep.

Chloe was gone.

The door was still locked.

Clara stared at it.

Then at the document Chloe had left behind.

PROJECT MIRACLE — SUBJECT: CLARA MORGAN

Her hands trembled.

The words seemed impossible.

A planned marriage.

A planned pregnancy.

A planned child.

She had spent fourteen months believing Julian had chosen her because he loved her.

Now she wasn't even sure their first meeting had been accidental.

Clara reached for the emergency button.

Within seconds, two nurses rushed in.

"What happened?"

"Someone was in here."

"Who?"

"I don't know."

The nurse checked the hallway.

Nobody.

Clara looked at the document.

"Call Agent Mercer."

FEDERAL BUILDING — 8:40 A.M.

Arthur Vance sat behind a metal table.

For the first time in thirty years, nobody had brought him coffee.

Nobody had adjusted the temperature for him.

Nobody had asked whether the chair was comfortable.

Nobody cared that he owned half the city.

Across from him sat Daniel Mercer and two federal prosecutors.

A thick evidence box sat between them.

Mercer opened the first folder.

"Let's start with Vance Meridian Holdings."

Arthur smiled.

"My lawyers will be here shortly."

"They won't be allowed into this room during questioning."

Arthur's smile disappeared.

Mercer slid a document across the table.

"Vance Meridian Holdings received twenty-three million dollars from a company called Northbridge Consulting."

"Investment."

"Northbridge has no employees."

"Shell company."

"Correct."

Arthur leaned back.

"So?"

Mercer opened another file.

"Northbridge then transferred twenty million to another company."

Arthur said nothing.

"That company bought property in Miami."

"Legal."

"The property was then sold to a third company."

"Also legal."

"Which transferred the proceeds to a Swiss account."

Arthur's expression remained calm.

Mercer slid over the bank record.

"The account belongs to you."

Arthur finally stopped smiling.

"You're making assumptions."

"No."

Mercer leaned forward.

"We're following money."

Arthur looked at him.

"Money doesn't tell you everything."

"It tells us enough."

The prosecutor spoke for the first time.

"Mr. Vance, your company used at least seventeen shell corporations to move approximately one hundred and eighty-six million dollars."

Arthur laughed.

"You think that's all mine?"

"No."

The prosecutor closed the folder.

"We think you've stolen significantly more."

Arthur's laughter stopped.

ACROSS TOWN

Beatrice Vance sat in a private conference room.

Three lawyers surrounded her.

Her jewelry had been removed.

Her handbag had been confiscated.

But she still sat straight.

Still elegant.

Still convinced she was better than everyone around her.

"Mrs. Vance," one prosecutor said, "we need to discuss your role."

"My role?"

"In Vance Holdings."

"I was a social director."

The prosecutor raised an eyebrow.

"Social director?"

"Charitable foundations. Events. Donor relationships."

"You attended board meetings."

"Sometimes."

"You signed financial documents."

"Administrative matters."

"You approved transfers."

"I don't remember."

The prosecutor opened a folder.

"You approved seventeen."

Beatrice's face tightened.

"I had no knowledge of the underlying transactions."

The prosecutor looked at her.

"Then who did?"

Beatrice didn't answer.

"Your husband?"

Silence.

"Your son?"

Still silence.

Then Beatrice suddenly smiled.

"You want someone responsible?"

The prosecutor nodded.

"Yes."

Beatrice leaned back.

"Clara."

The room went quiet.

"Clara Morgan."

HOSPITAL

Clara stared at Mercer.

"She blamed me?"

Mercer nodded.

"She's claiming you manipulated Arthur."

Clara almost laughed.

"Me?"

"She's saying you infiltrated the company."

"I did."

Mercer looked at her.

"But she's claiming you created the shell corporations."

Clara shook her head.

"That's absurd."

"She's also claiming you seduced Julian to gain access."

Clara stared at him.

"I married him."

Mercer said nothing.

Clara's voice became bitter.

"Apparently that was part of my criminal master plan."

Mercer opened another folder.

"There's more."

"What?"

"Beatrice claims you intentionally became pregnant."

Clara looked down at her stomach.

"She says I wanted the Vance inheritance."

Clara shook her head.

"She told everyone I was barren."

Mercer nodded.

"Which is why her accusation may become useful."

"How?"

"Because the medical records contradict her."

He handed Clara another document.

"Your fertility treatment was paid for by an anonymous trust."

Clara looked up.

"What?"

"The payments began before your wedding."

Clara's blood ran cold.

"Who paid?"

"We're trying to determine that."

Clara stared at the records.

There were years of payments.

Doctors.

Clinics.

Medication.

Appointments.

All arranged before Julian had supposedly decided he wanted children.

Clara whispered:

"Someone planned my pregnancy."

Mercer nodded.

"That's what we're beginning to suspect."

FEDERAL INTERVIEW ROOM

Beatrice sat alone.

Her lawyer stood beside her.

The prosecutor entered.

"Mrs. Vance, we have reviewed your statement."

"Good."

"You claim Clara Morgan engineered the fraud."

"Yes."

"You claim she had access to company accounts."

"Yes."

"You claim she created the shell corporations."

"Yes."

"You claim she manipulated your husband."

"Absolutely."

The prosecutor placed a photograph on the table.

Clara.

Eight months pregnant.

Lying on the floor of the baby shower.

Blood on her dress.

Beatrice looked at it.

"You attacked her."

Beatrice's eyes narrowed.

"She provoked my son."

"Julian punched her."

"He lost control."

"You applauded."

Beatrice said nothing.

"You applauded after your pregnant daughter-in-law was struck."

"I was emotional."

The prosecutor slid another photograph forward.

Beatrice applauding.

Arthur beside her.

Then another.

Julian standing over Clara.

Then another.

Chloe smiling.

The prosecutor looked at Beatrice.

"You want us to believe this woman controlled your entire family?"

Beatrice's face hardened.

"She is dangerous."

"Why?"

"Because she knew too much."

"About what?"

Beatrice suddenly stopped.

The prosecutor waited.

"You said she knew too much."

"I misspoke."

"No."

The prosecutor leaned forward.

"You didn't."

Beatrice stared at him.

"What did Clara know?"

Beatrice said nothing.

"Did she know about the offshore accounts?"

Silence.

"The shell companies?"

Silence.

"The Trust?"

Beatrice's face changed.

The prosecutor noticed.

"What Trust?"

Beatrice realized her mistake.

She looked toward her lawyer.

Too late.

The prosecutor closed the folder.

"Thank you."

Beatrice whispered:

"I want my attorney."

THE VANCE TOWER

By noon, employees were gathering in the lobby.

News vans crowded the street.

Cameras flashed.

Reporters shouted questions.

"Is Arthur Vance under arrest?"

"Did Vance Holdings launder money?"

"Was Julian Vance involved?"

"Where is Beatrice Vance?"

The company's stock collapsed.

Investors sold everything.

Banks froze accounts.

Business partners canceled contracts.

The empire Arthur had spent forty years building began disappearing in hours.

Inside the executive floor, Julian stood before the glass windows.

His phone wouldn't stop ringing.

His assistant had resigned.

His attorney had stopped answering.

His father was in federal custody.

His mother was being interrogated.

His mistress had disappeared.

His wife was in the hospital.

And then the elevator opened.

Daniel Mercer stepped out.

Julian turned.

"You again."

Mercer held up a warrant.

"We're seizing the executive offices."

Julian laughed bitterly.

"You already took everything."

"No."

Mercer looked around.

"We're taking the truth."

The search began.

Computers were removed.

Files were boxed.

Hard drives were seized.

The private executive vault was opened.

Inside were dozens of documents.

One folder caught Mercer's attention.

The label read:

MIRACLE

He opened it.

His expression changed.

"Get me the lead prosecutor."

HOSPITAL — 1:16 P.M.

Clara was staring at the ceiling when Mercer returned.

He didn't sit down.

He simply placed a folder beside her.

"We found something."

"What?"

"The Miracle project."

Clara looked at him.

"What is it?"

"We don't know yet."

"Then why are you scared?"

Mercer looked at her.

"Because the project predates your marriage."

Clara swallowed.

"How far?"

"Seven years."

Her eyes widened.

"Seven?"

Mercer nodded.

"Seven years before you met Julian."

Clara touched her stomach.

"Why me?"

"We don't know."

"Who started it?"

Mercer hesitated.

"Arthur didn't."

Clara's heart skipped.

"Then who?"

Mercer opened the folder.

There was a signature.

Clara recognized it immediately.

She had seen it on old family documents.

Her mother's handwriting.

Her mother's signature.

Clara whispered:

"No."

Mercer nodded.

"Your mother was involved."

Clara stared at the page.

Her mother's signature sat beneath one sentence:

THE CHILD MUST BE BORN INTO THE VANCE FAMILY.

Clara couldn't breathe.

"My mother would never write this."

Mercer pointed to the date.

"She signed it seven years before your wedding."

Clara shook her head.

"Forgery."

"Possibly."

"Then prove it."

"We're trying."

Clara looked at him.

"Where is my mother?"

"She left the city."

"Where?"

"We're looking."

Clara closed her eyes.

Her entire life was beginning to feel like a story someone else had written.

Her mother.

Her marriage.

Her pregnancy.

Even the baby shower.

Everything seemed connected.

Then the door opened.

Julian entered.

Mercer immediately stood.

"You shouldn't be here."

"I need to talk to her."

Clara looked at him.

"Let him."

Mercer hesitated.

Then stepped outside.

Julian closed the door.

For several seconds, he simply stared at her.

Then he said:

"My mother lied."

Clara waited.

"My father lied."

She said nothing.

"And I lied."

"About what?"

Julian's eyes filled with tears.

"Everything."

Clara's voice was cold.

"Start with the marriage."

Julian looked at her.

"You weren't chosen because you were easy to control."

"Then why?"

"Because my father believed you were the only woman who could give him what he wanted."

"What?"

Julian swallowed.

"An heir with your blood."

Clara's hand moved to her stomach.

"But why?"

Julian looked terrified.

"Because your family has something the Vances have spent decades trying to obtain."

"What?"

He stepped closer.

"The Morgan inheritance."

Clara frowned.

"Money?"

"No."

"Property?"

"No."

Julian whispered:

"Evidence."

Clara stared.

"Evidence of what?"

"Something your grandfather discovered."

"What?"

Julian looked toward the door.

"That the Vance empire wasn't built legally."

Clara's eyes narrowed.

"I already know that."

"No."

Julian shook his head.

"You don't."

He took a breath.

"Your grandfather didn't just expose Arthur."

"He created the evidence that could destroy him."

Clara stared.

"And where is it?"

Julian's voice dropped.

"Your mother has it."

Clara froze.

"Where?"

Julian shook his head.

"I don't know."

"You're lying."

"I'm not."

"Then why did your family marry me?"

Julian looked down.

"Because they believed your mother would eventually give it to you."

Clara's heart pounded.

"And the baby?"

Julian looked at her stomach.

"Your baby was the insurance policy."

Clara's blood ran cold.

"What does that mean?"

Julian whispered:

"If anything happened to your mother..."

He stopped.

Clara stared at him.

"Finish."

"...the Vances intended to take the child."

Silence.

The monitor continued.

Beep.

Beep.

Beep.

Clara's face went white.

"They planned to take my baby?"

Julian nodded.

"And raise him as their heir."

Clara's eyes filled with fury.

"Why?"

Julian's voice cracked.

"Because they believed the child would eventually lead them to the evidence."

Clara stared at him.

Then something clicked.

The baby shower.

Chloe.

The insult.

She's carrying the real heir.

Julian hadn't simply been bragging.

He had known.

The baby was never just a child to them.

He was a key.

A living key.

Clara slowly pulled the blanket higher over her stomach.

"You all made one mistake."

Julian looked at her.

"What?"

Clara met his eyes.

"You thought I was protecting myself."

She placed one hand over her unborn child.

"I've been protecting my baby."

Julian whispered:

"Clara..."

She turned away.

"Get out."

He didn't move.

"Please."

"Get out."

Julian left.

The door closed.

Clara reached for her phone.

There was one new message.

Unknown number.

Your mother is alive.

Clara stopped breathing.

Another message appeared.

And she knows who the real father of your baby is.

Clara stared at the screen.

Then the final message arrived.

Meet me alone if you want the truth.

Beneath it was an address.

And a time.

Midnight.

Clara looked toward the sleeping city outside the window.

The Vance empire was collapsing.

But now she understood something far more frightening.

The empire had never been the real secret.

May you like

The real secret was her.

And somewhere in the darkness, her mother was waiting with the truth about the child Clara had spent eight months believing belonged to her husband.
