CHAPTER 8 — JULIAN'S LAST LIE

CHAPTER 8 — JULIAN'S LAST LIE
The room remained silent after Clara read the name.
She couldn't move.
She couldn't breathe.
She couldn't even look at Julian.
The medical report trembled between her fingers.
BIOLOGICAL FATHER: JULIAN ARTHUR VANCE.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Julian whispered:
"No."
Clara finally looked at him.
His face was drained of color.
"You said you didn't know."
"I didn't."
"You said Daniel Reed was the father."
"I said the DNA evidence pointed to him."
"You knew there was another possibility."
Julian shook his head.
"No."
Richard Hale stood near the door, watching them with a faint smile.
Mercer noticed.
"Why are you smiling?"
Richard's smile disappeared.
"I'm not."
"You should leave."
"I don't think so."
Mercer raised his weapon slightly.
"That's not a request."
Richard slowly lifted his hands.
Then Julian spoke.
"Wait."
Mercer turned.
Julian looked at Richard.
"You said the report was original."
"It is."
"Then why does it say I'm the father?"
Richard's expression hardened.
"Because you are."
Julian stared at him.
"But the fertility procedure—"
"Was never what you thought."
Clara's eyes narrowed.
"What does that mean?"
Richard looked at her.
"It means someone altered the records."
"Who?"
Richard smiled faintly.
"That's the question you should be asking your husband."
Julian stepped backward.
"Don't."
Richard continued.
"Because Julian knew more than he admitted."
Clara's voice became cold.
"How much?"
Julian looked at her.
"I was trying to protect you."
"That's not an answer."
"I didn't know everything."
"How much?"
Julian closed his eyes.
Then he said:
"Enough."
THE BARGAIN
Mercer immediately stepped forward.
"Julian, sit down."
Julian ignored him.
"I want a deal."
Mercer stared.
"A deal?"
"Immunity."
"You don't get to negotiate immunity in a hospital room."
"You need my testimony."
"We need the truth."
"Then give me protection."
Mercer said nothing.
Julian looked at Clara.
"I can tell you everything."
Clara stared back.
"Everything?"
"Yes."
"Then start."
Julian hesitated.
"The account."
"What account?"
"Morrow."
Clara's expression tightened.
"What about it?"
"I didn't create it."
Mercer interrupted.
"We already know."
"No."
Julian shook his head.
"You don't."
He pointed toward Richard.
"He did."
Richard's face changed.
For the first time, the confidence disappeared.
Julian saw it.
And smiled bitterly.
"That's right."
Richard said nothing.
Julian continued.
"Richard Hale created Morrow Strategic Partners."
Clara stared.
"Why?"
"To move money without Arthur knowing where it went."
Mercer frowned.
"Arthur didn't control it?"
"Not originally."
"Who did?"
Julian looked at Clara.
"Your mother."
The room went silent.
Clara's heart pounded.
"My mother?"
Julian nodded.
"Margaret Morgan controlled the account."
"Then why was my name on it?"
"Because she transferred control to you."
"When?"
"Seven years ago."
Clara stared at him.
"That's impossible."
Julian's voice dropped.
"That's why I married you."
Clara froze.
THE LIE
The sentence hung in the air.
Clara looked at him as though she no longer recognized his face.
"You married me because of the account?"
Julian swallowed.
"Yes."
"Not because you loved me."
"I did love you."
"But that wasn't why."
"No."
Clara laughed once.
It was a broken sound.
"How long?"
Julian looked down.
"From the beginning."
"How long have you known about the Morgan Trust?"
"Since before I met you."
Clara's eyes filled with tears.
"You watched me."
"Yes."
"You investigated me."
"Yes."
"You knew about my mother."
"Yes."
"And you still stood there every day pretending to be my husband."
Julian couldn't answer.
Clara stepped closer.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because Arthur would have killed you."
"And you thought lying was better?"
"I thought keeping you alive was better."
"You brought Chloe into our home."
Julian closed his eyes.
"I know."
"You humiliated me."
"I know."
"You let your family believe I was worthless."
"I know."
"You let me think my own husband hated my child."
His voice cracked.
"I never hated the baby."
Clara stared at him.
"Then what did you hate?"
Julian looked at her.
"Myself."
THE FIRST CONFESSION
Julian sat down.
For the first time, he looked exhausted.
"I was twenty-three when my father told me about the Morgan Trust."
Clara remained standing.
"He told me our family would collapse if we didn't get control of it."
"Why?"
"Because Arthur had already taken loans against assets he didn't own."
Mercer frowned.
"How much?"
"Almost a billion."
Mercer went still.
Julian continued.
"The Morgan Trust was the only thing large enough to save the Vance empire."
"So you married me for money."
"Yes."
Clara looked away.
"But something changed."
"What?"
"I fell in love with you."
Clara shook her head.
"Don't."
"It's true."
"You don't get to use love to excuse this."
"I know."
"Then what happened?"
Julian's voice became quieter.
"I tried to get you away from Arthur."
"How?"
"I secretly transferred money into your accounts."
Clara stared.
"The money from Morrow?"
"Some of it."
"Why?"
"So you could disappear if necessary."
"Then why didn't you tell me?"
"Because Arthur had people watching you."
"Dr. Hart?"
"Among others."
Clara's face hardened.
"Who else?"
Julian hesitated.
Then he said:
"Your mother."
Clara froze.
"My mother was watching me?"
"Not against you."
"Then why?"
"To protect you."
Clara shook her head.
"She's been dead."
Julian looked at her.
"No."
Clara stopped breathing.
"What?"
"Your mother is alive."
THE LAST LIE
Mercer immediately stepped toward Julian.
"Where?"
Julian looked at him.
"I don't know."
"You're lying."
"I'm not."
"You just said she's alive."
"I know she's alive."
"Then where is she?"
"I don't know."
Mercer grabbed the back of the chair.
"Who told you?"
"Richard."
Everyone looked at Richard.
His expression remained unreadable.
Julian continued.
"Richard arranged meetings between Margaret and Arthur."
Richard said:
"That's enough."
Julian smiled.
"No."
He turned toward Clara.
"There's something else."
Richard stepped forward.
"Julian."
"You don't control me anymore."
Richard's face hardened.
Julian looked at Clara.
"Your mother didn't disappear."
"Then what happened?"
"She went underground."
"Why?"
"Because she discovered who was really behind the Vance operation."
Clara whispered:
"Arthur?"
Julian shook his head.
"No."
"Richard?"
"No."
"Then who?"
Julian looked toward Mercer.
"Someone inside the federal investigation."
Mercer froze.
"What?"
Julian continued.
"Your mother found evidence that someone was leaking information to Arthur."
Mercer's expression changed.
"Who?"
"I don't know."
"You're lying."
Julian shook his head.
"I swear."
Mercer stared at him.
Then Clara asked:
"How do you know?"
Julian looked at her.
"Because your mother contacted me."
Clara's eyes widened.
"When?"
"Three months ago."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"She told me not to."
"Why?"
"She said if you knew she was alive, you'd become a target."
Clara covered her mouth.
"Where did she contact you?"
Julian hesitated.
"New York."
"Where?"
"A hotel."
"Which one?"
"The Astor."
Clara stared.
"The Astor closed five years ago."
Julian's face changed.
"What?"
"It was demolished."
Silence.
Mercer slowly turned toward Richard.
Richard's expression had gone completely blank.
Clara noticed.
"Richard."
He didn't answer.
"How could Julian meet my mother in a hotel that no longer exists?"
Richard looked at her.
Then smiled.
"Because he didn't."
Clara's stomach dropped.
Julian stared at Richard.
"What are you saying?"
Richard answered:
"Your mother never met Julian."
Julian stood.
"You're lying."
"No."
Richard looked at Clara.
"Someone used her identity."
"Who?"
Richard didn't answer.
Clara suddenly understood.
The person who had contacted Julian had pretended to be Margaret.
Someone had manipulated him.
Someone had used his fear.
Someone had fed him just enough truth to control his decisions.
Julian had been lying.
But perhaps he hadn't known which parts were lies.
THE RECORDING
Mercer suddenly took out his phone.
"Julian."
"What?"
"You said your mother contacted you three months ago."
"Yes."
"Do you have proof?"
Julian hesitated.
"I have a recording."
Richard's face changed.
"Where?"
Julian looked at him.
"In my private cloud."
Mercer immediately held out his hand.
"Give me access."
Julian entered the password.
A recording appeared.
Date:
MARCH 17.
Time:
2:11 AM.
Julian pressed play.
A woman's voice filled the room.
"Julian."
He froze.
Clara froze.
She knew that voice.
Her mother's voice.
"Your father is going to destroy everything."
Julian's recorded voice answered:
"Where are you?"
"I can't tell you."
"Then how do I know you're really Margaret?"
"You don't."
"Why contact me?"
"Because Clara is in danger."
The recording continued.
"You must keep her away from the Vances."
Julian asked:
"What about the baby?"
A pause.
Then:
"Especially the baby."
The recording ended.
Nobody moved.
Clara stared at the phone.
"That's my mother."
Mercer nodded.
"Yes."
Richard suddenly laughed.
Everyone turned toward him.
He looked almost relieved.
Clara stared.
"What's funny?"
Richard shook his head.
"You still don't understand."
"Explain."
"The recording is real."
Clara frowned.
"Then what's the problem?"
Richard looked at Julian.
"Your last lie."
Julian's face changed.
Richard continued:
"You said Margaret contacted you three months ago."
"She did."
"No."
Richard looked at Mercer.
"That recording was made five years ago."
Silence.
Julian stared at the screen.
"No."
Richard nodded.
"The timestamp is fake."
Mercer checked the metadata.
His expression hardened.
Richard smiled.
"Someone altered the date."
Julian's voice cracked.
"Who?"
Richard looked directly at Clara.
"Your husband."
Clara slowly turned toward Julian.
Julian shook his head.
"I didn't."
Mercer checked the file again.
Then another file.
Then another.
His expression changed.
"Julian."
"What?"
"The recording wasn't uploaded three months ago."
Julian stared.
"It was uploaded seven years ago."
Clara's blood ran cold.
Seven years.
The same year she met Julian.
The same year Morrow was transferred.
The same year the Morgan Trust changed hands.
Julian's last lie wasn't that he had met Margaret three months ago.
It was that he had only recently discovered the truth.
He had known from the beginning.
THE EVIDENCE
Mercer opened the cloud archive.
Hundreds of files appeared.
Financial records.
Photographs.
Messages.
Medical documents.
And one folder labeled:
CLARA — ORIGINAL PLAN
Julian lunged toward the laptop.
"No."
Mercer pushed him back.
"Don't."
"You don't understand."
"Then explain."
Julian stared at the folder.
"If you open that, she'll know."
Clara's voice was cold.
"Who?"
Julian looked at her.
"The person who made me marry you."
Mercer opened the folder.
The first document was a contract.
MARRIAGE AGREEMENT — MORGAN/VANCE
Date:
Seven years earlier.
Under the terms was one handwritten condition:
Julian Vance must marry Clara Morgan and produce a legitimate heir.
Clara stared.
Her knees weakened.
She grabbed the bed.
Julian whispered:
"I'm sorry."
She looked at him.
"You knew."
"Yes."
"You planned my pregnancy."
"No."
"You planned my marriage."
"Yes."
"You planned my life."
"I was trying to protect you."
Clara's eyes filled with tears.
"No."
She shook her head.
"You were trying to control me."
Julian couldn't answer.
Then Mercer opened the final document.
A second contract.
This one was between Julian and Richard Hale.
At the bottom was Julian's signature.
And beneath it:
PAYMENT UPON SUCCESSFUL ACTIVATION OF THE MORGAN TRUST.
Amount:
$50,000,000.
Clara stared at the number.
Then at Julian.
"You were going to sell my child."
Julian's eyes filled with tears.
"No."
"Fifty million dollars."
"I never took it."
"But you signed."
"I signed because—"
"Because what?"
Julian finally broke.
"Because they told me if I refused, they would kill you."
Silence.
Clara's expression changed.
For one terrible moment, she saw the truth.
Julian had lied.
Manipulated.
Betrayed.
But he had also been trapped.
And that didn't make him innocent.
It only made him another weapon.
Mercer closed the folder.
"Julian Vance, you're under arrest."
Julian didn't resist.
As Mercer placed the cuffs around his wrists, Julian looked at Clara one last time.
"I know you hate me."
Clara said nothing.
"But there's one thing I never lied about."
She looked at him.
"What?"
Julian swallowed.
"I really am the baby's father."
Clara stared at him.
Mercer stopped.
Richard's smile disappeared.
And for the first time that night, nobody knew what to believe.
Then Clara looked down at the medical report.
The DNA profile.
The altered records.
The secret fertility procedure.
The impossible chain of evidence.
She whispered:
"Then why did someone spend seven years trying to convince me you weren't?"
Julian had no answer.
Because somewhere outside the hospital, a phone began ringing.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Mercer answered.
His face changed.
"Who is this?"
A woman's voice came through the speaker.
Clara heard it.
Her entire body froze.
It was her mother.
"Daniel Mercer?"
"Yes."
"You have my daughter."
Mercer looked at Clara.
The voice continued:
"Then listen carefully."
A pause.
"If Julian has told you everything..."
Her voice became colder.
"...he has already lied about the most important part."
The call ended.
Clara stared at Julian.
May you like
And Julian suddenly looked more terrified than he had ever looked before.
Because he knew exactly what his final lie was.
