CHAPTER 7 — THE WOMAN INSIDE THE COMPANY

CHAPTER 7 — THE WOMAN INSIDE THE COMPANY

For three full minutes after Daniel Reed's death was announced, nobody spoke.

Clara stood beside the hospital bed with one hand resting over her stomach.

Julian remained near the door.

Mercer stood between them.

Three people.

Three versions of the truth.

And somewhere beyond those walls, someone was already trying to destroy the evidence.

Clara finally broke the silence.

"How long?"

Mercer looked at her.

"How long what?"

"How long have you been investigating my family?"

Mercer hesitated.

"Six months."

Julian's head snapped toward him.

"Six months?"

Mercer ignored him.

Clara nodded slowly.

"That's what I thought."

Julian stared at her.

"What do you mean?"

Clara looked directly at him.

"I've known for almost eight months."

His expression changed.

"Known what?"

"That your family was committing crimes."

Julian shook his head.

"No."

Clara gave him a faint, exhausted smile.

"Yes."

"You didn't."

"I did."

Mercer watched her carefully.

Clara walked to the window.

Outside, the city was beginning to wake.

People were going to work.

Cars were moving through intersections.

Restaurants were opening.

The world was continuing as if nothing had happened.

But inside that hospital room, Clara was finally opening the door to a secret she had carried alone.

"I didn't start investigating Arthur because I suspected him."

She turned around.

"I started investigating him because I found something he never expected me to see."

EIGHT MONTHS EARLIER

Clara had been sitting in Arthur Vance's office.

Julian had asked her to deliver a document.

Arthur wasn't there.

Neither was his assistant.

For once, Clara was alone.

She placed the document on his desk.

Then she noticed a drawer that hadn't been completely closed.

She almost ignored it.

Almost.

But something caught her eye.

A name.

MARGARET MORGAN.

Her mother.

Clara's heart stopped.

She opened the drawer.

Inside was a file.

Old.

Yellowed.

Marked:

CONFIDENTIAL — MORGAN PROJECT

She opened it.

The first page contained her mother's photograph.

The second contained Clara's.

The third contained a financial record.

And the fourth contained one sentence.

SUBJECT MUST REMAIN UNAWARE OF HER VALUE.

Clara read it twice.

Then a third time.

Her hands began shaking.

Her mother had disappeared when Clara was sixteen.

Arthur had always told her Margaret had abandoned the family.

But this file suggested something else.

Her mother had been watched.

Tracked.

Studied.

For years.

Clara took photographs of every page with her phone.

She returned the file exactly where she had found it.

Then she walked out.

She never told Julian.

She never told anyone.

Not yet.

THE FIRST CALL

That night, Clara called a number she had found inside the file.

A former federal investigator.

His name was Daniel Mercer.

At the time, she didn't know whether she could trust him.

She didn't even know whether the number still worked.

It did.

He answered on the fourth ring.

"Who is this?"

"My name is Clara Morgan."

Silence.

Then:

"How did you get this number?"

"From a file belonging to Arthur Vance."

Mercer's voice changed immediately.

"What file?"

Clara looked toward the bedroom door.

"One about my mother."

Another silence.

Then Mercer said:

"Don't say anything else over the phone."

"Why?"

"Because if Arthur kept that file, there's a reason."

"What should I do?"

"Come alone."

THE WOMAN INSIDE THE COMPANY

Mercer met Clara two days later.

They sat in a quiet café.

No lawyers.

No assistants.

No bodyguards.

Mercer listened as Clara explained everything.

He didn't interrupt.

When she finished, he asked:

"How much access do you have to Vance Holdings?"

"Enough."

"Can you get financial records?"

"Some."

"Emails?"

"Possibly."

"Internal communications?"

"Yes."

Mercer stared at her.

"Then you're not just a witness."

"What am I?"

He answered:

"Our person inside."

Clara looked at him.

"You want me to spy on my husband's family?"

"I want you to document what they're doing."

"Why me?"

"Because they don't suspect you."

Clara almost laughed.

"Arthur thinks I'm useless."

"Exactly."

Mercer leaned closer.

"Never correct him."

That became the beginning.

MONTHS OF SILENCE

Clara learned how to disappear in plain sight.

She attended board dinners.

She smiled at charity events.

She sat beside Arthur while he discussed acquisitions.

She listened while Beatrice discussed lawyers.

She watched Julian sign documents he barely read.

And every night, she recorded what she could.

Dates.

Names.

Accounts.

Transfers.

Shell companies.

Private meetings.

Threats.

People who disappeared.

People who suddenly became rich.

People who suddenly stopped talking.

Clara built a second life inside her marriage.

During the day, she was Julian Vance's wife.

At night, she was Mercer’s confidential source.

She learned that Vance Holdings had twenty-seven subsidiaries.

Only eleven were legitimate.

The others existed to move money.

She discovered offshore accounts.

Fake invoices.

Bribes disguised as consulting fees.

And eventually—

Morrow Strategic Partners.

The account that connected everything.

But there was one thing she couldn't understand.

Why did Arthur care so much about the Morgan family?

The answer came six weeks later.

THE RECORDING

Clara had hidden a recorder inside her handbag.

Arthur didn't know.

She entered his office at 9:13 PM.

He was speaking to someone.

A man Clara couldn't see.

She stayed outside the door.

Arthur said:

"The girl is pregnant."

The other man answered:

"Then everything is proceeding."

Clara's blood went cold.

Arthur continued:

"What if she finds out?"

"She won't."

"And if she does?"

A pause.

"Then Julian handles it."

Clara covered her mouth.

Arthur lowered his voice.

"The child cannot be allowed to leave the family."

The other man laughed.

"The child doesn't belong to the family yet."

Arthur replied:

"Blood will decide that."

Clara's hand tightened around the recorder.

Then she heard something that made her almost drop it.

The man's voice.

She recognized it.

It belonged to someone she trusted.

Someone she had seen almost every day.

Someone who had access to every Vance file.

Every medical record.

Every financial account.

Every secret.

Clara whispered:

"No..."

She didn't record the rest.

She ran.

THE WOMAN IN THE COMPANY

Back in the hospital, Clara looked at Mercer.

"There's someone inside Vance Holdings."

Mercer nodded.

"We suspected."

"You don't know who."

"No."

"I do."

Julian stared at her.

"Who?"

Clara didn't answer immediately.

She looked at Mercer.

Then at Julian.

Then she said:

"Someone you both trust."

Julian's face tightened.

"Who?"

Clara walked to the table.

She picked up a photograph.

It showed the senior executives of Vance Holdings.

Arthur.

Julian.

Beatrice.

The legal team.

The finance department.

The medical consultant.

And one woman standing slightly behind everyone else.

Elegant.

Professional.

Almost invisible.

Julian stared at the photograph.

"No."

Clara nodded.

"Yes."

He shook his head.

"That's impossible."

"Why?"

"Because she's been with my family for fifteen years."

"That's exactly why."

Julian looked at Mercer.

"Who is she?"

Mercer answered:

"Dr. Evelyn Hart."

Julian's face went blank.

"The family physician?"

Clara nodded.

"She wasn't just your family's doctor."

Mercer opened a file.

"She was also a board consultant for Vance Holdings."

Julian stared at the photograph.

"She had access to Clara's medical records."

"Yes."

"She had access to Arthur's private accounts."

"Yes."

"She could authorize medical procedures."

"Yes."

Julian's breathing became faster.

"She could alter DNA records."

Mercer said nothing.

Julian suddenly understood.

"She could have created the donor profile."

Clara looked at him.

"Exactly."

THE MISSING FILE

Mercer opened his laptop.

"We searched Dr. Hart's office this morning."

"What did you find?"

"Almost nothing."

Clara frowned.

"Almost?"

"One empty safe."

Julian asked:

"Where is she?"

"Missing."

"When?"

"Three hours ago."

Clara's stomach tightened.

"She knew."

Mercer nodded.

"Someone warned her."

"Who?"

"We don't know."

Julian looked at Clara.

"Did she know about your investigation?"

Clara's eyes hardened.

"She knew more than anyone."

Then her phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

She answered.

"Hello?"

Nothing.

Then a distorted voice spoke.

"You should have stopped."

Clara froze.

Mercer immediately motioned for her to put it on speaker.

The voice continued.

"You were given every opportunity."

Clara whispered:

"Who are you?"

"You already know."

"Where is Dr. Hart?"

A quiet laugh.

"She's exactly where she needs to be."

"What do you want?"

"The baby."

Julian stepped forward.

"Who is this?"

The voice became colder.

"Julian."

Julian froze.

"You disappoint your father."

"Who are you?"

"You'll know soon enough."

The call ended.

Mercer immediately began tracing it.

Clara stared at her phone.

Then she noticed something.

A photograph had been sent.

She opened it.

Her blood ran cold.

It showed her hospital room.

Taken from inside.

Taken that morning.

In the corner of the photograph was the hospital bed.

Clara.

Her unborn child.

And someone standing behind her.

Mercer saw it.

"That's impossible."

Clara looked at him.

"What?"

"That photograph was taken from inside this room."

Julian slowly turned toward the door.

"No."

Mercer reached for his weapon.

"Everyone stay still."

The room went silent.

Then the lights went out.

THE WOMAN THEY NEVER SUSPECTED

Emergency lights came on.

Mercer moved toward the door.

Julian stayed beside Clara.

Someone had entered the hospital.

Someone who knew exactly where she was.

Someone who had access to her records.

Someone who knew about the investigation.

Clara suddenly remembered the recording.

The voice.

The voice she had heard months ago.

She finally understood.

It wasn't Dr. Hart.

It wasn't Arthur.

It wasn't Julian.

It was someone else.

Someone higher.

Someone who had been using all of them.

Clara whispered:

"Mercer."

"What?"

"I know who the voice belongs to."

He looked at her.

"Who?"

Clara swallowed.

"The person who recruited Dr. Hart."

Before Mercer could respond, the door opened.

A man stepped inside.

Not Arthur.

Not Julian.

Not a doctor.

He wore a dark suit.

He held a folder.

And he smiled when he saw Clara.

"Mrs. Vance."

Julian stepped in front of her.

"Who are you?"

The man ignored him.

He looked directly at Clara.

"You've been very difficult to control."

Clara's face went pale.

She knew him.

Everyone in the Vance family knew him.

He was the man who had attended every major board meeting for the last decade.

The man Arthur always called his most trusted adviser.

The man who had helped build the Vance empire.

Clara whispered his name.

"Richard Hale."

The man smiled.

"Finally."

He looked at her stomach.

"Now we can stop pretending."

Mercer raised his weapon.

"Hands where I can see them."

Richard didn't move.

Instead, he placed the folder on the table.

"Inside that folder is the original medical record."

Clara stared.

"Original?"

Richard nodded.

"The one proving who your baby's biological father really is."

Julian stepped forward.

"Give it to me."

Richard laughed.

"No."

He looked at Clara.

"It belongs to you."

Clara reached for it.

Her fingers touched the folder.

Richard whispered:

"Open it."

She did.

The first page contained a name.

Clara read it.

Then read it again.

Her face lost all color.

Julian saw the name.

His expression shattered.

"No..."

Mercer looked between them.

"What does it say?"

Clara couldn't speak.

Julian finally whispered:

"The baby's father..."

He looked at Clara.

"...isn't Daniel Reed."

Clara stared at the report.

Because the name printed beneath BIOLOGICAL FATHER was someone none of them had considered.

May you like

Someone who had been standing in the room with them all along.

And the moment Clara saw it, she understood why the Vance family had been willing to destroy everything to control her child.
