CHAPTER 6 — THE BABY'S SECRET

CHAPTER 6 — THE BABY'S SECRET

Julian had never been afraid of a hospital.

He had spent his childhood visiting private clinics, executive medical centers, and rooms where doctors spoke in careful voices because his family name was printed on their invoices.

He knew how to control doctors.

He knew how to control lawyers.

He knew how to control people.

But he had never learned how to control fear.

That changed the moment Daniel Mercer placed Clara's medical file on the table.

Julian stared at it.

His eyes remained fixed on the red folder.

"Where did you get that?"

Mercer didn't answer.

Julian looked up.

"That's private."

"So is money laundering."

"That's my wife's medical information."

"Correct."

"You can't just—"

"We have a warrant."

Julian swallowed.

Mercer opened the file.

"The first prenatal record."

Julian's face changed.

"Don't."

Mercer looked at him.

"Why?"

Julian said nothing.

"You're unusually interested in this file."

Julian leaned back.

"I want my lawyer."

"You'll get him."

Mercer turned a page.

"But first, I want to know why your fingerprints were found on a sealed medical envelope belonging to Clara Morgan."

Julian went completely still.

"I've never opened her medical records."

Mercer slid a photograph across the table.

It showed Julian standing inside a private fertility clinic.

Seven months earlier.

Julian stared at the photograph.

"I was there."

"Why?"

"I was checking on her."

"Alone?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

Julian didn't answer.

Mercer waited.

Finally Julian whispered:

"Because my father told me to."

THE CLINIC

Seven months earlier.

Julian had arrived at the clinic at 11:42 PM.

The building was supposed to be closed.

But the receptionist had been waiting.

She had handed him a sealed envelope.

"Mr. Vance."

Julian had taken it.

"What's this?"

"Dr. Halpern said you should read it privately."

Julian opened the envelope.

Inside was a single medical report.

He remembered reading the first line.

Then the second.

Then the third.

And feeling the world tilt beneath him.

He had immediately called his father.

Arthur answered.

"What did you find?"

Julian couldn't speak.

"Julian?"

"The doctor says..."

He swallowed.

"The baby isn't genetically related to me."

There was silence.

Then Arthur asked:

"Are you sure?"

"Yes."

"Did you see the report?"

"I'm holding it."

Arthur's voice became cold.

"Then destroy it."

Julian stared at the paper.

"But whose child is it?"

Arthur didn't answer.

"Father?"

"Destroy the report."

"I need to know."

"You don't."

Julian's voice rose.

"I need to know whose child my wife is carrying."

Arthur finally said:

"That's exactly why you need to stay away from the answer."

The call ended.

Julian stood alone in the empty clinic.

And for the first time, he understood that his father was afraid.

Not angry.

Not annoyed.

Afraid.

PRESENT DAY

Mercer watched Julian carefully.

"So you knew."

Julian looked down.

"I suspected."

"That's not what I asked."

Julian's jaw tightened.

"Yes."

"You knew Clara was pregnant with another man's child?"

"I knew there was a possibility."

"Who is the father?"

"I don't know."

Mercer pushed another document forward.

"You're lying."

Julian stared at it.

A DNA report.

His name.

Clara's name.

And a third unidentified male profile.

Mercer said:

"The unidentified profile matches Daniel Reed."

Julian's face went white.

"No."

"It does."

"No."

Mercer leaned forward.

"You knew Daniel was alive."

Julian said nothing.

"You knew he had contact with Clara's family."

Nothing.

"And now we have a DNA match."

Julian suddenly stood.

"Where is she?"

Mercer remained seated.

"Who?"

"Clara."

"Why?"

Julian's voice cracked.

"Because she can't know."

Mercer looked at him.

"Can't know what?"

Julian stared at the floor.

"The truth."

THE HOSPITAL

Clara was asleep when she heard footsteps.

She opened her eyes.

Mercer stood beside the bed.

His expression was serious.

"Where's Julian?"

"Being questioned."

"About the baby?"

Mercer hesitated.

Clara immediately noticed.

"You know something."

"I know there's a discrepancy in the medical records."

"What discrepancy?"

"The original prenatal file was altered."

Clara sat upright.

"Altered?"

"Yes."

"By whom?"

"We're trying to determine that."

Clara's heart began pounding.

"Show me."

Mercer handed her a copy.

The first page looked normal.

Her name.

Her date of birth.

Eight-month pregnancy.

Expected delivery date.

Then Clara noticed the father's name.

JULIAN ARTHUR VANCE.

She frowned.

"What's wrong?"

Mercer pointed to the bottom.

A correction had been made.

Underneath the printed name was another entry.

PATERNITY: UNCONFIRMED.

Clara stared.

"Why didn't anyone tell me?"

"Because the original doctor was instructed not to."

"By whom?"

Mercer looked at her.

"Arthur Vance."

Clara's blood ran cold.

"Why?"

"We don't know yet."

She looked down at the file.

Then another document caught her attention.

"What's that?"

Mercer hesitated.

"Something we found in the clinic's archived records."

Clara took it.

It was an old laboratory report.

She read the first line.

MATERNAL GENETIC PROFILE: CLARA ELIZABETH MORGAN

Then:

PATERNAL PROFILE: MATCH FOUND

Clara stopped.

Her eyes moved down the page.

The name had been blacked out.

But beneath the black ink was a reference number.

Mercer said quietly:

"We traced it."

"To whom?"

He looked at her.

"Daniel Reed."

Clara's world went silent.

"No."

Mercer nodded.

"The DNA match is extremely strong."

Clara touched her stomach.

Her voice barely came out.

"Daniel?"

"We can't say with absolute certainty until the court-verified test is completed."

"But you believe it."

"Yes."

Clara stared at the ceiling.

Daniel Reed.

The man who had worked for Arthur.

The man who had disappeared.

The man her mother had supposedly helped escape.

The man who had been attacked.

Could he really be the father of her child?

She shook her head.

"I never slept with him."

Mercer looked surprised.

"I know."

"I never had an affair."

"We know."

"Then how?"

Mercer didn't answer.

Clara stared at him.

"What are you not telling me?"

Mercer took a breath.

"Your medical records show that you underwent fertility treatment."

"I know."

"But the treatment was unusual."

"How?"

"Your doctor used an anonymous donor."

Clara's eyes widened.

"Donor?"

"Yes."

She shook her head.

"No."

"You signed consent forms."

"I don't remember that."

"They were signed electronically."

"I never authorized donor treatment."

Mercer placed another document in front of her.

The signature was hers.

But Clara immediately knew it wasn't.

"I didn't sign this."

"We believe someone used your identity."

Clara stared.

"Then who was the donor?"

Mercer looked at her.

"That's where the case becomes dangerous."

JULIAN'S PANIC

Julian paced the interrogation room.

He couldn't sit.

He couldn't think.

He couldn't breathe.

His father's warnings replayed in his mind.

Destroy the report.

You don't need to know.

Stay away from the answer.

Julian finally understood why.

The baby wasn't simply Daniel Reed's child.

The child was connected to the Morgan Trust.

And Daniel Reed had discovered the truth years ago.

That was why Arthur wanted him gone.

That was why Margaret disappeared.

That was why Clara had been monitored.

That was why Julian had been ordered to marry her.

And that was why Arthur had never cared whether Julian loved Clara.

He only cared about the child.

The door opened.

Mercer entered.

Julian looked at him.

"Is she okay?"

"She's stable."

"The baby?"

"Stable."

Julian exhaled.

"Good."

Mercer sat down.

"You knew about the donor."

Julian froze.

"No."

"You knew Clara's pregnancy wasn't naturally conceived."

"I knew there was a fertility procedure."

"Who arranged it?"

Julian looked away.

"My father."

"Why?"

"I don't know."

Mercer slammed the folder onto the table.

"Stop lying."

Julian flinched.

"You know exactly why."

Julian stared at him.

"Do you?"

Mercer opened the file.

"The donor profile was created under a false identity."

Julian said nothing.

"The biological material came from Daniel Reed."

Julian's face went white.

Mercer continued.

"But Daniel didn't donate voluntarily."

Julian looked up.

"What?"

"He was unconscious."

Silence.

Mercer leaned forward.

"Someone took his genetic material while he was hospitalized."

Julian's breathing stopped.

"Who?"

"We don't know."

Julian whispered:

"My father."

Mercer nodded.

"We suspect him."

Julian sank into the chair.

"No."

"Julian."

"I didn't know."

"You knew enough."

"I didn't know!"

His voice cracked.

"I thought Arthur was arranging fertility treatment because Clara couldn't conceive."

Mercer stared.

"And you never questioned why?"

Julian looked down.

"I did."

"When?"

"The night I received the report."

"And?"

"I asked my father."

"What did he tell you?"

Julian whispered:

"That the baby would save our family."

CLARA'S DISCOVERY

Back in the hospital, Clara opened the final document.

It was a handwritten note.

The handwriting was familiar.

Her mother's.

Clara, if you ever discover the truth about your child, remember this: I did not betray you. I was trying to save you.

Clara's eyes filled with tears.

Below it was another sentence.

The man whose blood was used was not the man who fathered the child in the ordinary sense.

Clara frowned.

What did that mean?

She kept reading.

Arthur needed Daniel Reed's blood because the Morgan Trust recognizes bloodline markers—not conventional parentage.

Clara stopped.

She looked at Mercer.

"What does that mean?"

Mercer answered slowly.

"It means the Vances may have believed Daniel's genetic connection was enough to activate the trust."

Clara stared at him.

"But why Daniel?"

"Because he was connected to your grandfather."

"How?"

"We're still investigating."

Clara looked down at the letter.

There was one final paragraph.

But there is something Arthur never discovered.

Clara's heart began pounding.

She read the final line.

Daniel Reed is not the biological father of your child.

Clara looked up.

"What?"

Mercer leaned closer.

The next sentence was written beneath the first.

The true father is someone Arthur trusted completely.

Clara froze.

The room seemed to become colder.

Someone Arthur trusted.

Someone close enough to manipulate the fertility procedure.

Someone close enough to hide the truth.

Someone whose identity would destroy the entire Vance family.

Clara whispered:

"Who?"

Mercer didn't answer.

Because he didn't know.

Then the door opened.

Julian stood there.

His face was pale.

He looked directly at Clara.

And when he saw the letter in her hands, he stopped.

Clara stared at him.

"You knew."

Julian shook his head.

"I didn't."

"You knew something."

"I suspected."

"Who is my baby's father?"

Julian looked at her stomach.

Then at Clara.

His lips trembled.

"I don't know."

Clara's voice became cold.

"Then why are you afraid?"

Julian said nothing.

Clara stood despite the pain.

"Look at me."

He did.

"What did your father tell you?"

Julian closed his eyes.

"He told me the child had to be born."

"Why?"

"Because the baby could activate the Morgan Trust."

"Anything else?"

Julian's eyes filled with tears.

"Yes."

"What?"

He whispered:

"Your baby wasn't supposed to survive."

Clara went completely still.

Mercer immediately stepped forward.

"What did you say?"

Julian looked terrified.

"My father ordered the doctors to make sure the pregnancy ended if the trust couldn't be transferred."

Clara's hand moved over her stomach.

The monitor accelerated.

Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep.

Julian stepped toward her.

"I stopped him."

Clara stared.

"You?"

"Yes."

"When?"

"Months ago."

"Then why did you keep lying?"

Julian couldn't answer.

Clara's eyes filled with tears.

"You let me believe you hated this child."

"I thought if you believed I hated the baby, you'd stay away from my family."

"That makes no sense."

"I was trying to protect you."

"You punched me."

Julian looked down.

"I know."

"You brought Chloe into my home."

"I know."

"You humiliated me."

"I know."

"And you call that protection?"

He had no answer.

Clara turned away.

"Get out."

Julian didn't move.

Then his phone rang.

He answered.

His face changed.

"What?"

He listened.

"Where?"

Silence.

Then:

"No."

Clara watched him.

Julian slowly lowered the phone.

Mercer asked:

"What happened?"

Julian looked at Clara.

His voice was barely audible.

"Daniel Reed is dead."

Clara froze.

"What?"

"The hospital just called."

Mercer grabbed his phone.

Julian continued:

"They found him in the morgue."

Clara stared at him.

"But you said he was alive."

"He was."

Mercer looked at Julian.

"How did he die?"

Julian's face had gone completely white.

"They said cardiac arrest."

Clara shook her head.

"No."

Julian looked at her.

"Clara..."

She stepped backward.

"No."

Because suddenly she remembered the letter.

The true father is someone Arthur trusted completely.

And if Daniel Reed wasn't the father—

then someone else had been involved.

Someone still alive.

Someone powerful.

Someone who had access to her medical records.

Someone who could manipulate DNA.

Someone who had been close enough to Arthur to know the entire plan.

Clara looked at Mercer.

"Find the original fertility doctor."

Mercer nodded.

"Why?"

"Because whoever arranged my pregnancy..."

She looked toward Julian.

May you like

"...knows who my baby's real father is."

And somewhere inside the Vance empire, a person who had remained invisible for years finally realized that Clara was getting dangerously close to the truth.
