Chapter 10 — The Night Emily Disappeared

Chapter 10 — The Night Emily Disappeared
Daniel knew something was wrong before he opened the front door.
The house was too quiet.
Not peaceful.
Empty.
The kind of silence that made every instinct in his body scream.
He had been gone for thirty-eight minutes.
Thirty-eight minutes.
That was all.
He had left Emily and Noah inside the safe apartment with two security officers outside the building.
He had promised her he would be back before midnight.
Now it was 11:42 p.m.
The hallway lights were on.
The nursery door was open.
And Emily was gone.
So was Noah.
Daniel stopped breathing.
“Emily?”
Nothing.
He ran upstairs.
The crib was empty.
Noah's blanket was gone.
His diaper bag was gone.
The small blue jacket Emily had bought three weeks earlier was gone.
Daniel turned toward the bedroom.
The bed was untouched.
The window was closed.
Then he saw something on the floor.
Emily's phone.
The screen was cracked.
Daniel picked it up.
One message was still visible.
DON'T TRUST THE MAN WHO COMES TO SAVE YOU.
Daniel's blood ran cold.
He called her.
The phone rang from his hand.
The ringtone came from beneath the bed.
Her phone had never left the room.
Rachel arrived seven minutes later.
She took one look at the empty nursery.
“They took them.”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
“Daniel—”
“She wouldn't leave willingly.”
Rachel crouched beside the crib.
There were no signs of forced entry.
“No broken locks.”
“No.”
“No struggle.”
Daniel stared at the floor.
Then he saw something.
A tiny white object.
Noah's pacifier.
He picked it up.
There was a smear of red on one side.
Daniel's face changed.
Rachel immediately noticed.
“Don't touch it.”
He froze.
She photographed it.
Then she looked toward the hallway.
“Where are the security officers?”
Daniel's voice became quiet.
“Outside.”
Rachel walked downstairs.
The front door was locked.
The officers were still there.
But neither of them answered.
They were unconscious.
The paramedics arrived.
Both men had been sedated.
One had a puncture mark on his neck.
The other had been exposed to a chemical aerosol.
Daniel stood over them.
“Who did this?”
Rachel shook her head.
“We'll find out.”
Daniel looked at the security cameras.
“Show me.”
“The system is offline.”
“Again?”
Rachel stared at him.
“Someone disabled the entire building.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
The same thing had happened before.
The same strategy.
Disable the cameras.
Isolate the target.
Create a window.
Then disappear.
But this time, they had taken Emily and Noah.
Daniel went back upstairs.
He examined every room.
No signs of struggle.
Then he noticed the kitchen window.
It was open by two inches.
Cold air moved through the room.
On the windowsill was a small piece of black fabric.
Daniel picked it up.
Rachel stopped him.
“Gloves.”
He put them on.
She examined the fabric.
“Expensive.”
“Can you identify it?”
“Not yet.”
Daniel looked outside.
The alley below was empty.
Then he saw tire marks in the snow.
A vehicle had stopped behind the building.
Rachel photographed them.
“Black SUV.”
Daniel's voice tightened.
“Edward?”
“Maybe.”
Then Daniel noticed something else.
The tire tracks were too narrow.
“Not an SUV.”
Rachel looked again.
“Luxury van.”
Daniel stared at the road.
A van.
Dark windows.
No license plate visible.
He suddenly remembered something.
Mara had once warned him:
If they ever take Emily, look for the white delivery van.
Daniel's blood ran cold.
He called Mara.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
A message appeared.
I TOLD YOU NOT TO TRUST ANYONE.
Daniel stared at the screen.
He typed:
Where are they?
Three dots appeared.
Then disappeared.
A second later:
I DON'T KNOW.
Daniel's anger exploded.
“You're lying.”
He threw the phone onto the table.
Rachel looked at him.
“Daniel.”
“She knew this could happen.”
“Maybe.”
“She knew.”
Rachel picked up the phone.
“Then let's find out what she knew.”
They traced the message.
It had been sent through a relay.
Three servers.
Two countries.
One dead account.
But the final connection pointed somewhere local.
A private medical facility.
Daniel recognized the address.
It was the same facility where his father had once hidden documents.
The same facility connected to Edward.
Rachel looked at him.
“That's where we go.”
The building was dark.
No lights.
No security guards.
The front door was unlocked.
Inside, the corridors smelled of antiseptic.
Daniel shouted:
“Emily!”
Nothing.
They searched room after room.
Empty.
Then Daniel heard something.
A baby crying.
He ran toward the sound.
The door opened.
A nurse was sitting beside an empty crib.
She stood immediately.
“Who are you?”
“Where is the baby?”
She looked frightened.
“He was here.”
“Where is he now?”
“Someone took him.”
“Who?”
“I don't know.”
Daniel grabbed the edge of the crib.
“When?”
“About twenty minutes ago.”
“And the woman?”
“Emily?”
“Yes.”
“She was here too.”
Daniel's heart pounded.
“What happened?”
The nurse hesitated.
“She was awake.”
“Was she hurt?”
“No.”
“Did she say anything?”
The nurse nodded.
“She kept asking where her husband was.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“What did she say?”
“She said…”
The nurse swallowed.
“She said, ‘He'll come for us.’”
Daniel's throat tightened.
Then the nurse continued.
“But someone told her you weren't coming.”
Daniel looked up.
“Who?”
“I don't know.”
“Was it a man?”
“Yes.”
“Describe him.”
“Older.”
“Gray hair?”
The nurse nodded.
Daniel whispered:
“Edward.”
Rachel searched the medical records.
There was no admission for Emily.
No record for Noah.
Nothing.
“Someone erased them.”
Daniel looked around.
“Then why bring them here?”
Rachel pointed toward the basement.
“There may be another entrance.”
They found it.
A hidden elevator.
It required a keycard.
Daniel tried the one he had taken from the clinic office.
The doors opened.
They descended.
The basement was enormous.
Old medical rooms.
Storage areas.
Private suites.
Then they found a room with the door open.
Inside was Emily's scarf.
Daniel picked it up.
It smelled like her perfume.
She had been there.
Recently.
Rachel noticed a camera above the door.
“This one is still active.”
Daniel looked up.
“Can we access it?”
“Yes.”
The footage appeared.
Emily sat in a chair.
Noah was in her arms.
She was crying.
Across from her stood Edward.
Daniel watched in silence.
Edward said:
“You have two choices.”
Emily shook her head.
“No.”
“Come with me willingly.”
“Never.”
“Or your husband receives evidence suggesting you abandoned your child.”
Emily stared at him.
“You can't do that.”
“I already have.”
Daniel's hands clenched.
Edward continued:
“Your husband is already under investigation.”
Emily looked toward Noah.
“What do you want?”
Edward smiled.
“The baby.”
Emily's eyes filled with tears.
“You'll never have him.”
Edward's expression hardened.
“Then Daniel loses everything.”
Emily held Noah tighter.
“You're a monster.”
Edward leaned closer.
“No.”
He whispered:
“I'm the only reason your family still exists.”
The footage ended.
Daniel stared at the blank screen.
“He threatened her.”
Rachel nodded.
“But she didn't go willingly.”
Daniel looked at the timestamp.
“How long ago?”
“Two hours.”
“Then why are they gone?”
Rachel searched the network.
A second camera appeared.
The footage showed a service corridor.
Emily was being escorted toward an exit.
She stopped.
Turned.
And looked directly at the camera.
Then she mouthed four words.
Find Anna. Trust nobody.
Daniel froze.
“She knew.”
Rachel looked at him.
“She knew where they were taking her.”
“No.”
Daniel pointed at the screen.
“She wanted us to know.”
A vehicle tracking system suddenly activated.
The van.
Daniel's phone displayed its location.
Moving west.
He grabbed his coat.
“We're going.”
Rachel stopped him.
“You can't chase them.”
“That's my wife.”
“And your son.”
“I know.”
“If this is a trap—”
“It already is.”
Daniel ran outside.
The chase lasted forty-seven minutes.
The van moved through industrial roads.
Then disappeared beneath an overpass.
Daniel followed.
Nothing.
No van.
No Emily.
No Noah.
Only an abandoned warehouse.
He entered.
The building was empty.
Except for one chair.
On it was Noah's blue blanket.
Daniel picked it up.
He smelled smoke.
Then he saw the wall.
Written in black paint:
YOU WERE TOO LATE.
Daniel's hands trembled.
Rachel approached.
“Daniel…”
He turned.
“No.”
She looked at him.
“They're alive.”
“How do you know?”
“Because Edward wants something.”
“And?”
“If he wanted them dead…”
Daniel looked at the empty warehouse.
“…we wouldn't be standing here reading a message.”
At 3:17 a.m., Daniel's phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
No voice.
Only breathing.
Then Emily whispered:
“Daniel.”
His heart stopped.
“Emily!”
“Don't talk loudly.”
“Where are you?”
“I don't know.”
“Is Noah with you?”
“Yes.”
“Is he okay?”
“Yes.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Are you hurt?”
“No.”
“Who has you?”
Silence.
Then:
“Someone I trusted.”
Daniel froze.
“Mara?”
“No.”
“Who?”
Emily's voice trembled.
“Your father.”
Daniel stopped breathing.
“My father is dead.”
“I know.”
“Emily, that doesn't make sense.”
“I know.”
She began crying.
“Daniel…”
“What?”
“I saw him.”
Daniel's hands shook.
“Where?”
“I don't know.”
“Did he speak to you?”
“Yes.”
“What did he say?”
Emily whispered:
“He said he was sorry.”
The call suddenly ended.
Daniel stared at the phone.
Rachel looked at him.
“What happened?”
Daniel couldn't answer.
Then his phone received one final message.
A photograph.
Emily.
Holding Noah.
Alive.
Standing beside an older man whose face was partly hidden in shadow.
Daniel zoomed in.
The man's eyes were unmistakable.
His father.
Beneath the photograph was a single sentence:
COME ALONE IF YOU WANT YOUR FAMILY BACK.
Daniel stared at the screen.
Rachel whispered:
“That's impossible.”
Daniel looked at the photograph again.
For twenty-three years, he had believed his father was dead.
Now his missing wife had seen him.
His son was in his arms.
And somewhere in the darkness, the man Daniel had buried was waiting for him.
Daniel put the phone in his pocket.
“I know where I'm going.”
Rachel shook her head.
“You're not going alone.”
Daniel looked at her.
“He asked me to.”
“That is exactly why you shouldn't.”
Daniel looked toward the empty road.
For the first time, he understood the real purpose of Emily's disappearance.
It wasn't simply an abduction.
It was an invitation.
Someone had taken the two people Daniel loved most because they wanted him to walk directly into the center of the Blackwood family's darkest secret.

And this time, Daniel knew one thing for certain.
He wasn't going to arrive too late again.
