Chapter 3 — The Night Emily Was Locked Outside

Chapter 3 — The Night Emily Was Locked Outside
Emily had never told Daniel the whole story.
Not because she wanted to protect Linda.
Not because she was ashamed.
She simply hadn't known how to explain what had happened without sounding unbelievable.
That night, Daniel finally asked her to tell him everything.
They sat in the temporary apartment Rachel had arranged for them.
No cameras.
No Linda.
No hidden microphones.
Just a small living room, a sleeping baby, and two people who had finally run out of reasons to keep pretending everything was normal.
Daniel placed his phone on the table.
“Start from the beginning.”
Emily looked down.
“It started eleven days after Noah was born.”
Daniel frowned.
“What happened?”
“Your mother told me I wasn't allowed to sleep in our bedroom.”
“Why?”
“She said Noah was keeping you awake.”
Daniel stared at her.
“I never said that.”
“I know.”
“What did you do?”
“I slept in the nursery.”
Emily paused.
“She woke me at two in the morning.”
The memory returned with terrifying clarity.
Emily had been exhausted.
Her body still hurt from giving birth.
Noah had been crying for nearly an hour.
She had finally gotten him to sleep when the nursery door opened.
Linda stood there.
“Get up.”
Emily had looked at the clock.
2:08 a.m.
“What happened?”
“Your husband needs rest.”
Emily blinked.
“Daniel isn't here.”
Linda's expression had hardened.
“He'll be home soon.”
“I thought he was working overnight.”
“He changed his schedule.”
Emily sat up.
“I didn't know.”
Linda pointed toward the hallway.
“Bring the baby.”
“Why?”
“Because you're sleeping in the guest room.”
Emily had stared at her.
“I need to feed him.”
“You can do that there.”
“I can barely stand.”
Linda's eyes had narrowed.
“Then learn.”
Daniel listened without interrupting.
Emily continued.
“I carried Noah downstairs.”
“You carried him?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn't you call me?”
“I tried.”
“How many times?”
“Three.”
Daniel looked away.
He remembered those calls.
At the time, he had been in a meeting.
He had silenced his phone.
The memory hurt.
“What happened next?”
“Your mother locked the nursery.”
Daniel looked up.
“She locked it?”
“Yes.”
“From the outside?”
Emily nodded.
“She said it was for safety.”
Daniel's expression hardened.
“What did she do with you?”
“She took me outside.”
It was freezing.
Chicago winter.
The temperature had fallen below twenty degrees.
Emily had been wearing sweatpants and a thin cardigan.
No coat.
No shoes.
Noah had been wrapped in a blanket.
Linda opened the back door.
“Go.”
Emily stared at her.
“Where?”
“Outside.”
“Linda, please.”
“You've been disrespectful.”
“I didn't do anything.”
“You don't appreciate what I've done for this family.”
Emily began crying.
“Noah needs warmth.”
“Then go to your sister's.”
“She lives forty minutes away.”
“Call her.”
“My phone is upstairs.”
Linda smiled.
“Exactly.”
Then she closed the door.
The lock clicked.
Emily stood outside.
Holding her newborn.
In the freezing dark.
Daniel's hands clenched.
“How long?”
“Twenty-three minutes.”
“How do you know?”
“I looked at the kitchen window.”
“There was a clock.”
Emily nodded.
“I could see it.”
“What happened?”
“I screamed.”
“Did anyone hear you?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because your mother had already turned on the television.”
Daniel stared.
“She planned it.”
Emily nodded.
“I think so.”
After twenty-three minutes, the back door opened.
Linda stood there.
She was holding a phone.
“Apologize.”
Emily looked at her.
“What?”
“Say you're sorry.”
“For what?”
“For embarrassing me.”
Emily refused.
Linda stepped aside.
“Then stay outside.”
Noah began crying.
Emily immediately whispered:
“I'm sorry.”
Linda smiled.
“Good.”
She opened the door.
Emily stepped inside.
Linda reached for Noah.
Emily pulled him closer.
“No.”
Linda's expression changed.
“Give him to me.”
“No.”
“You're not stable.”
“I am his mother.”
“You're sick.”
Emily froze.
“What?”
Linda smiled.
“You don't remember what happened last night, do you?”
Emily stared at her.
“I do.”
“No.”
Linda shook her head.
“You were screaming.”
“I wasn't.”
“You said you wanted to hurt yourself.”
Emily's blood ran cold.
“I never said that.”
Linda looked toward the hallway.
“You will.”
Daniel stopped her.
“What do you mean?”
Emily looked at him.
“She was telling me what I was going to say.”
Daniel felt a chill.
“She was creating the story before anything happened.”
“Yes.”
“And then?”
“She took me upstairs.”
Linda had brought Emily into the bathroom.
She turned on the light.
Then placed a small bottle on the counter.
“What is that?”
“Your medication.”
“I don't take medication.”
“You will.”
Emily had backed away.
Linda opened the bottle.
“You're going to take one.”
“No.”
Linda's voice became cold.
“Do you want Daniel to think you're unstable?”
Emily froze.
“What?”
“Do you want him to think you're a danger to your son?”
“No.”
“Then cooperate.”
Emily stared at the bottle.
“You're threatening me.”
Linda smiled.
“I'm protecting the family.”
Daniel leaned back.
“That was the night you first became afraid of her.”
Emily nodded.
“Yes.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“I tried.”
“I mean after.”
Emily's eyes filled with tears.
“Because the next morning, she showed me something.”
“What?”
“A video.”
Daniel's expression changed.
“What video?”
“She had recorded me crying outside.”
Daniel froze.
“From where?”
“The camera.”
He remembered the hidden devices.
“Did she show you?”
“Yes.”
“What did she say?”
“She said if I ever told you she had locked me outside, she'd show you the video and tell you I was unstable.”
Daniel stared at her.
“She was building evidence.”
“Yes.”
Rachel entered the room.
She had been listening from the doorway.
“There's something else.”
Daniel looked at her.
“What?”
Rachel placed a folder on the table.
“We checked the old security logs.”
“And?”
“The back door wasn't opened manually that night.”
Emily looked confused.
“What does that mean?”
Rachel pointed to the report.
“It was controlled remotely.”
Daniel stared.
“By whom?”
“Someone using the home's administrative access.”
Daniel's expression hardened.
“Linda?”
“Not necessarily.”
Rachel continued.
“The door was locked at 2:09 a.m.”
“That's when Linda took Emily outside.”
“Yes.”
“It was unlocked at 2:32.”
Emily looked at Daniel.
“Twenty-three minutes.”
Exactly.
Daniel's stomach tightened.
“Someone planned it down to the minute.”
Rachel opened another document.
“There is more.”
She showed them a camera log.
At 2:05 a.m., a device had been activated.
Not a household camera.
A separate recording device.
Daniel looked at Emily.
“That's the video she showed you.”
Emily nodded.
Rachel continued.
“The recording was uploaded to an external server.”
“When?”
“Four minutes after the door reopened.”
Daniel stared.
“Who received it?”
“We don't know.”
“But the file name tells us something.”
She turned the screen toward him.
EMILY_INCIDENT_01
Daniel read it twice.
“Incident one?”
Rachel nodded.
“That suggests this wasn't the first event.”
Emily whispered:
“And it wasn't the last.”
Daniel turned toward her.
“What else happened?”
Emily hesitated.
“I don't know if I can.”
“You can.”
She looked down.
“Three nights later, your mother made me drop Noah's bottle.”
“What?”
“She told me to hold him with one hand.”
“Why?”
“She was filming.”
Daniel's face tightened.
“She wanted you to look careless.”
“Yes.”
“Did you drop him?”
“No.”
“Then what happened?”
“She knocked the bottle out of my hand.”
Daniel stared.
“Did she hurt the baby?”
“No.”
Emily closed her eyes.
“But she made me cry.”
Rachel opened another file.
“We found that incident too.”
The video appeared.
Linda stood behind Emily.
Emily was holding Noah.
Linda reached forward.
The bottle fell.
Emily panicked.
Linda shouted:
“Look what you've done!”
Daniel stared at the screen.
Then the video changed.
A second camera angle appeared.
This one showed Linda's hand knocking the bottle away.
Daniel whispered:
“She edited the first video.”
Rachel nodded.
“The version she showed you only showed Emily dropping the bottle.”
Daniel's expression became cold.
“She was manufacturing evidence.”
“Exactly.”
Emily looked at Daniel.
“She wanted you to think I was failing.”
“I know.”
“She wanted you to think I couldn't care for Noah.”
“I know.”
“And she wanted me to start believing it too.”
Daniel reached for her hand.
“You never failed.”
Emily looked at him.
“I almost did.”
“No.”
“I was so tired.”
“You were surviving.”
She began crying.
Daniel pulled her into his arms.
For the first time since this began, Emily allowed herself to cry without apologizing.
Later that evening, Rachel found another file.
It was hidden inside the original surveillance archive.
The recording date was two days before Linda moved into the house.
Daniel watched.
His father appeared on screen.
Daniel froze.
His father had been dead for four years.
The video showed him sitting in an office.
Across from him sat Linda.
Daniel leaned closer.
His father's voice was clear.
“You understand the plan?”
Linda nodded.
“The mother must look unstable.”
“And the child?”
“He remains in the family.”
Daniel's heart stopped.
His father continued:
“Daniel cannot know about the trust.”
Linda asked:
“What if Emily fights?”
His father smiled.
“Then we make sure Daniel believes she is dangerous.”
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Emily stared at Daniel.
“Your father knew.”
Daniel couldn't answer.
His father had been involved.
Years before Noah was born.
Years before Linda entered their house.
The plan wasn't new.
The plan had been waiting.
Rachel opened another file.
“This was recorded six years ago.”
Daniel stared.
Six years.
His father had known about Emily before Daniel married her.
He had known there would be a child.
He had known the family would eventually try to control that child.
Daniel stood.
“Why?”
Rachel looked at the file.
“We don't know.”
Then a notification appeared on the forensic computer.
A new message.
Someone had accessed the surveillance archive remotely.
Rachel's face changed.
“Someone knows we're watching.”
Daniel looked at Emily.
“Are we being followed?”
Rachel shook her head.
“Not physically.”
“Then how?”
She pointed toward the server.
“Someone is inside the system.”
Daniel stared.
The screen suddenly changed.
A single message appeared.
YOU WERE NEVER SUPPOSED TO FIND THE SECOND CAMERA.
Then another.
THE NIGHT OUTSIDE WAS ONLY THE BEGINNING.
Emily grabbed Daniel's hand.
“What does that mean?”
Daniel looked at the message.
Then at the recovered recording of his father.
Then at the files labeled:
INCIDENT 01.
He finally understood.
Linda hadn't improvised.
She had been following instructions.
Every humiliation.
Every sleepless night.
Every planted pill.
Every staged incident.
Every recording.
They were building a case.
And the night Emily had been locked outside wasn't an isolated act of cruelty.
It was the first documented piece of evidence in a plan designed to take her child.
Daniel closed the laptop.
“We're going to find the rest.”
Rachel looked at him.
“Are you sure?”
Daniel looked toward the room where Noah was sleeping.
Then at Emily.
“Yes.”
His voice was quiet.
“But this time, they won't know what we're doing.”
Outside the window, a black vehicle sat across the street.
Its headlights were off.
Inside, someone watched the house.
Then the vehicle slowly pulled away.
And on the back seat sat a folder marked:
INCIDENT 02 — EMILY MUST BREAK.
May you like
The plan was still moving.
And Daniel had just discovered that the people behind it had been preparing for his resistance all along.
