Chapter 6 — The Son They Wanted to Take Away

Chapter 6 — The Son They Wanted to Take Away
Daniel thought the worst part was over when Linda was taken away.
He was wrong.
The arrest did not end the plan.
It exposed it.
Three days after Linda was removed from the house, Rachel arrived at Daniel's apartment carrying a thick gray folder.
She didn't sit down.
She placed it on the dining table.
Daniel looked at her face.
“What is it?”
Rachel didn't answer immediately.
Emily was holding Noah in the living room.
Daniel walked toward the table.
Rachel finally said:
“They filed.”
Daniel stopped.
“Who?”
“Your family.”
His eyes moved to the folder.
“Against Emily?”
Rachel shook her head.
“Against both of you.”
Daniel opened it.
The first page contained a court heading.
EMERGENCY PETITION FOR TEMPORARY CUSTODY OF MINOR CHILD.
Daniel's hands went cold.
The child's name appeared beneath it.
Noah Blackwood.
Then came the petitioner.
Linda Blackwood.
Daniel looked at Rachel.
“She was arrested.”
“Yes.”
“Then how did she file this?”
“She filed it before the arrest.”
Daniel turned the page.
His blood ran colder.
The petition had been prepared six weeks earlier.
Before the cameras.
Before the pills.
Before the night Emily was locked outside.
Before Noah had even been old enough to sleep through the night.
They had been preparing to take his son before Daniel understood there was a battle.
Emily walked over.
“What is it?”
Daniel looked at her.
“They're trying to take Noah.”
Her face went pale.
“No.”
Rachel pulled out another document.
“There is more.”
She placed it beside the petition.
“This is a psychological assessment.”
Emily read the first paragraph.
Her hands began trembling.
“Who wrote this?”
“Dr. Paul Mercer.”
Emily stared.
“I've never seen him.”
“I know.”
Rachel pointed to the date.
“It was prepared before you ever met him.”
Daniel looked at the report.
It described Emily as emotionally unstable.
Anxious.
Impulsive.
Possibly suffering from postpartum depression.
The final section contained a recommendation.
Mother should not be left alone with infant pending psychiatric evaluation.
Emily's lips parted.
“They wrote this before Noah was born.”
“Yes.”
Daniel closed the folder.
“They knew.”
Rachel nodded.
“They knew before the baby was born.”
Daniel walked toward the window.
Outside, Chicago moved as if nothing had happened.
Cars.
People.
Buses.
Ordinary life.
His life no longer felt ordinary.
He turned around.
“Who else signed it?”
Rachel opened the petition.
“Linda.”
“Anyone else?”
“Your uncle Victor.”
Daniel's jaw tightened.
“Victor isn't even listed as family.”
“He is listed as financial trustee.”
Daniel stared.
“Trustee of what?”
Rachel placed another document on the table.
“The Blackwood Family Trust.”
Daniel read it.
The trust contained several properties.
Investment accounts.
Business interests.
And one clause.
His eyes stopped.
Upon the incapacity or death of Daniel Blackwood, control of the family assets shall pass to the appointed trustee until the minor heir reaches legal adulthood.
Daniel slowly looked up.
“Minor heir.”
Rachel nodded.
“Noah.”
Daniel understood.
“They don't just want custody.”
“No.”
“They want control of the trust.”
“Yes.”
Emily whispered:
“How much?”
Rachel answered:
“Approximately forty-eight million dollars.”
Silence.
Daniel looked toward Noah.
The baby was asleep against Emily's shoulder.
“He's a child.”
Rachel nodded.
“To them, he's an asset.”
Emily's eyes filled with tears.
“I knew they wanted him.”
Daniel turned toward her.
“You knew?”
“Linda told me once.”
“What did she say?”
“She said Noah belonged to the Blackwoods.”
Daniel's expression hardened.
“She said I was only his mother.”
Emily looked down.
“I thought she was just being cruel.”
Daniel shook his head.
“She was telling you the plan.”
Rachel opened another document.
“This is the proposed custody arrangement.”
Daniel read it.
Temporary placement with paternal grandmother.
Supervised visitation for mother.
Father to retain limited parental authority pending investigation.
Daniel stared.
“Limited?”
Rachel nodded.
“They're trying to make you look complicit.”
“Why?”
“Because if they can prove Emily is unstable and you knowingly allowed her to remain alone with Noah…”
She paused.
“They can argue that you're also unfit.”
Daniel felt his stomach drop.
“They want both of us out.”
“Yes.”
“And Victor becomes trustee.”
“Exactly.”
Emily sat down.
Her hands shook.
“What happens to Noah?”
Rachel answered:
“If the court accepts their petition, he could be placed with Linda temporarily.”
Daniel looked at her.
“Even after the arrest?”
“Yes.”
“That's insane.”
“Courts act on evidence, not what feels insane.”
Daniel looked back at the folder.
“They have evidence.”
Rachel nodded.
“Manufactured evidence.”
“But it looks real.”
“Yes.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
The cameras.
The pills.
The staged arguments.
The edited recordings.
Everything suddenly made sense.
They hadn't been trying merely to destroy Emily.
They were building a legal weapon.
That afternoon, Daniel received a call from Child Protective Services.
A caseworker introduced herself.
“Mr. Blackwood, we'd like to schedule a home assessment.”
“When?”
“Tomorrow morning.”
Daniel looked at Emily.
“Why?”
“There's an active custody petition involving your son.”
“Based on what?”
“We can't discuss the investigation over the phone.”
Daniel's voice hardened.
“My mother is under arrest.”
“We're aware.”
“She planted medication on my wife.”
“We're aware of the allegations.”
“Not allegations.”
Daniel looked at Rachel.
“We have evidence.”
The caseworker remained calm.
“Then please provide it during the assessment.”
The call ended.
Daniel lowered the phone.
Rachel said:
“They're already involved.”
“How?”
“Someone triggered the investigation.”
“Who?”
Rachel looked at the petition.
“Victor.”
The next morning, two caseworkers arrived.
One was a woman named Karen.
The other was a man named David.
They inspected the apartment.
The nursery.
The kitchen.
The medicine cabinet.
Emily stood beside Daniel the entire time.
Karen asked:
“How is Emily coping?”
Daniel answered.
“She is recovering.”
“From what?”
“Postpartum exhaustion and trauma.”
Karen looked at Emily.
“Are you currently taking medication?”
“No.”
“Have you ever been diagnosed with a psychiatric condition?”
“No.”
Karen made a note.
Then asked:
“Have you ever experienced episodes of confusion?”
Emily hesitated.
Daniel saw it.
She was remembering the drugs.
“I was drugged.”
Karen looked up.
“Do you have evidence?”
“Yes.”
Daniel handed her a sealed copy.
She examined it.
“I'll add it to the case file.”
Then David asked:
“Mr. Blackwood, have you ever considered that your wife may have been experiencing symptoms before your mother intervened?”
Daniel stared.
“What?”
“We're simply asking.”
“No.”
David glanced at his notes.
“The petition alleges she displayed concerning behavior during pregnancy.”
“False.”
“Do you have proof?”
Daniel's voice hardened.
“Yes.”
He opened his laptop.
“This is the original footage.”
The caseworkers watched.
Linda appeared.
Provoking Emily.
Planting medication.
Staging incidents.
Editing recordings.
Karen's expression changed.
David stopped taking notes.
He stared at the screen.
When the recording ended, neither spoke.
Finally Karen said:
“This is significant.”
Daniel nodded.
“It should never have reached this point.”
Then David asked a question that made Daniel suspicious.
“Where is your son right now?”
“With his mother.”
“Can we see him?”
Daniel looked at Rachel.
She nodded.
Emily brought Noah into the room.
Karen smiled.
“He's beautiful.”
She examined him briefly.
“Any health concerns?”
“No.”
“Feeding?”
“Normal.”
“Sleeping?”
“Improving.”
Karen nodded.
Then she looked at Emily.
“You seem very attentive.”
Emily looked surprised.
“Thank you.”
David closed his folder.
“I think we've seen enough.”
They left.
Daniel watched them through the window.
Then his phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
A man's voice spoke.
“You're making this unnecessarily difficult.”
Daniel knew immediately.
“Victor.”
“You know what happens next.”
“Try to take my son.”
“I don't need to try.”
Daniel looked at Emily.
“You're going to lose.”
Victor laughed.
“You still think this is about winning?”
“What is it about?”
“Your father understood.”
“My father is dead.”
“Exactly.”
The line went silent.
Then Victor said:
“He knew what would happen if the family lost control of the trust.”
Daniel's jaw tightened.
“What did my father do?”
“He protected you.”
“From what?”
Victor's voice became quiet.
“From us.”
The call ended.
That night, Daniel searched his father's old records.
He found a sealed envelope.
It had been stored inside a safe deposit box.
The envelope was addressed to him.
Daniel — Open only if someone attempts to take Noah.
Daniel stared.
His father had known.
He opened it.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
Daniel,
If you're reading this, then they finally came for your son.
I failed to stop them.
Your mother knows more than she has ever admitted.
Victor will tell you the trust belongs to the family.
It doesn't.
It belongs to Noah.
And there is one condition they cannot overcome.
Daniel read the final paragraph.
Noah must remain with both biological parents unless a court determines either parent is legally incapable.
That is why they will try to destroy Emily first.
Protect her.
Protect your son.
And never let Victor convince you that this is about money.
Daniel stopped reading.
The final line was underlined.
It is about what the money can buy.
Daniel stared at the letter.
“What did you know, Dad?”
Emily stood behind him.
“What is it?”
He handed her the letter.
She read it.
Then looked at him.
“What does he mean?”
“I don't know.”
Rachel entered the room.
She had returned unexpectedly.
Daniel showed her the letter.
She read it.
Then looked up.
“This changes the case.”
“How?”
“Your father anticipated the custody attack.”
Rachel pointed at the final line.
“He believed the money wasn't the objective.”
“Then what is?”
She shook her head.
“We need to find out.”
At midnight, Rachel received a message.
A file had been uploaded to their secure evidence server.
No sender.
No explanation.
Just a video.
Daniel opened it.
His father appeared again.
But this time, he wasn't alone.
Beside him stood Victor.
And behind them was Linda.
All three were younger.
The recording had been made twelve years earlier.
Daniel leaned forward.
His father spoke first.
“If we proceed, the child will eventually control everything.”
Victor answered:
“Unless we control the child.”
Linda asked:
“And Emily?”
Victor smiled.
“She won't be a problem.”
Daniel's face went white.
The video continued.
His father looked uneasy.
“I don't want anyone hurt.”
Victor laughed.
“No one has to be hurt.”
Linda asked:
“What happens if Emily refuses?”
Victor looked directly at the camera.
“Then we make her believe she's failing.”
Daniel stopped the video.
Emily covered her mouth.
Rachel whispered:
“They planned this years ago.”
Daniel stared at the screen.
But then he noticed something.
The recording timestamp.
It was dated twelve years ago.
Four years before Daniel met Emily.
Before their marriage.
Before Noah.
Daniel looked at Rachel.
“This wasn't about Emily.”
Rachel frowned.
“What?”
Daniel pointed at the screen.
“They didn't know her yet.”
Silence.
“Then why were they planning to destroy the mother of my future child?”
Rachel's expression changed.
“Maybe they knew who you would marry.”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
He looked at the family trust documents.
Then at his father's letter.
Then at Noah sleeping upstairs.
Suddenly, the answer appeared.
His father hadn't been protecting Daniel from the family.
He had been protecting someone else.
Someone whose identity had never appeared in the trust documents.
Someone whose existence had been deliberately erased.
Daniel whispered:
“Who was the original heir?”
Rachel stared at him.
“I don't know.”
Daniel looked at the old recording again.
Victor had known.
Linda had known.
His father had known.
And whatever secret they were hiding was powerful enough to make them plan for Noah's birth twelve years before it happened.
Then Daniel's phone vibrated.
A message appeared.
YOU FOUND THE CUSTODY FILE.
Another message followed.
NOW FIND THE ORIGINAL HEIR.
Then a final message.
BECAUSE NOAH ISN'T THE FIRST CHILD THEY TRIED TO TAKE.
Daniel stared at the screen.
Emily stepped closer.
“Daniel…”
He looked at her.
For the first time, the fear in his eyes wasn't about losing Noah.
It was about discovering what had happened to the child who came before him.

And somewhere inside the Blackwood family archives, a name had been buried for more than twenty years.
A name that could destroy everything.
