Chapter 13 — The Secret My Father Left Behind

Chapter 13 — The Secret My Father Left Behind

Daniel had spent twenty-three years believing his father had left him nothing but a grave.

That belief ended at 4:17 in the afternoon.

The courthouse had emptied.

The reporters had gone.

Emily was waiting with Rachel in a secured room.

Linda had been taken back into custody.

And Daniel was standing alone in an underground parking garage when an unfamiliar man approached him.

He was wearing a dark gray coat.

No security badge.

No lawyer's briefcase.

Nothing that explained why he was there.

He simply stopped beside Daniel's car.

“Your father wanted you to have this.”

Daniel stared at the envelope in his hand.

“Who are you?”

The man didn't answer.

“Where did you get it?”

“He gave it to me six months ago.”

Daniel's heart stopped.

“My father?”

The man nodded.

“He knew the day would come when you would need to understand why all of this happened.”

Daniel reached for the envelope.

The man stepped back.

“One warning.”

“What?”

“Don't open it where anyone can see.”

Then he walked away.

Daniel watched him disappear between the parked cars.

Only after the elevator doors closed did he look down at the envelope.

His father's handwriting was unmistakable.

DANIEL — OPEN THIS ONLY WHEN THEY START ACCUSING YOU.

Daniel stared at the words.

They had started accusing him.

His father had known.

Twenty-three years ago.

He took the envelope to the secured apartment.

Emily was sitting beside the window.

She looked up when he entered.

“What is that?”

Daniel closed the door.

“My father left it.”

Emily's expression changed.

“He's alive.”

“I know.”

“Where?”

“I don't know.”

She stood.

“Daniel…”

He held up the envelope.

“This may explain everything.”

Rachel joined them.

The three of them sat around the table.

Daniel opened the envelope.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

Only four pages.

But the first sentence changed everything.

If you are reading this, then they have started using your name.

Daniel's breathing stopped.

Rachel leaned closer.

The letter continued.

They will tell you that you stole money.

They will tell you that you are unstable.

They will tell you that you are an unfit father.

Believe none of it.

The money was never stolen.

It was hidden.

Daniel looked up.

“Hidden from whom?”

He continued reading.

Twenty-three years ago, I discovered that the Blackwood fortune had been compromised from the inside.

Rachel whispered:

“Edward.”

Daniel nodded.

But the letter contained a different name.

Diane Mercer.

Daniel read aloud.

Diane was not merely our accountant.

She was the architect of a financial structure that allowed Edward to control assets without appearing to own them.

Emily frowned.

“How?”

Daniel kept reading.

Every Blackwood account had a shadow account.

Every legitimate investment had a second beneficiary.

Every family transfer created a duplicate record.

On paper, the money belonged to us.

In reality, Edward could access it.

Rachel looked shocked.

“That explains the hidden accounts.”

Daniel nodded.

His father had discovered the structure.

But instead of confronting Edward, he had created another one.

A secret financial network.

One that only he controlled.

Rachel pointed to the letter.

Daniel did.

I created a second trust.

I called it the Blackwood Continuity Trust.

No one knew it existed.

Not Linda.

Not Victor.

Not Diane.

And not Edward.

Daniel looked at Emily.

“That trust is the missing money.”

Rachel immediately understood.

“How much?”

Daniel read the next line.

Approximately forty-two million dollars.

Silence.

Forty-two million dollars.

Hidden for more than two decades.

The letter explained why Daniel's father had used Daniel's identity.

When Anna disappeared, I knew Edward would eventually come after the next heir.

I could not put the trust in my own name.

He was already watching me.

So I created a dormant identity attached to my son.

Daniel would appear to own nothing.

Yet legally, he would become the successor if I died.

Daniel stared at the page.

“You used me.”

The words escaped before he could stop them.

Emily touched his arm.

Rachel shook her head.

“He was trying to protect you.”

Daniel continued reading.

I know this will feel like betrayal.

I know you will ask why I never told you.

The answer is simple.

A child cannot be interrogated into revealing a secret he does not know.

Daniel closed his eyes.

His father had spent his childhood protecting him by making sure he knew nothing.

Then came the part that explained the current conspiracy.

Edward eventually discovered that I had moved part of the money.

He did not know where.

So he began searching through the family.

He used Victor.

He used Linda.

He used Diane.

And when Anna disappeared, he believed the problem had been solved.

Daniel looked at Emily.

“But Anna survived.”

“Yes.”

“And the trust?”

“Still existed.”

Rachel turned another page.

“There's more.”

Daniel read.

The Continuity Trust has one condition.

It cannot be accessed by anyone acting alone.

It requires the signatures of two living heirs.

Daniel's heart began pounding.

“Two?”

Rachel nodded.

“Daniel and Anna.”

Daniel understood.

That was why Edward had hunted Anna for twenty-three years.

And why he needed Daniel discredited.

If Daniel lost control of his identity, Edward could manipulate the succession.

If Anna disappeared again, the trust would remain inaccessible.

But if they reunited…

The hidden fortune could return to the Blackwood family.

Daniel reached the final page.

There was one sentence written in red ink.

There is something I never told you about the money.

Daniel stopped.

Rachel leaned forward.

“What?”

He read the next line.

Forty-two million dollars is only the amount they know about.

Emily's eyes widened.

Daniel continued.

The real fortune is hidden in something far more valuable than money.

Silence.

Rachel frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Daniel turned the page.

Nothing.

The letter ended there.

No explanation.

No account number.

No password.

Only one final line at the bottom.

Find the blue ledger.

Daniel stared.

“What blue ledger?”

Emily shook her head.

Rachel began searching the family archives.

“No record.”

Daniel thought about the old house.

The chapel.

The hidden room.

The safe.

Nothing.

Then he remembered something.

His father's study.

There had been a blue leather ledger on the bookshelf.

He had seen it as a child.

His father never allowed him to touch it.

Daniel stood.

“I know where it is.”

They returned to the old Blackwood estate after midnight.

The house had been sealed.

But Rachel had legal authorization to enter.

Daniel walked directly to his father's study.

Dust covered the shelves.

Everything looked exactly as he remembered.

The desk.

The fireplace.

The old globe.

The portrait of Anna.

Daniel stared at the portrait.

His missing sister looked about four years old.

A small smile.

A white dress.

His father had kept that picture all these years.

Daniel walked to the bookshelf.

There.

Third shelf.

Between two law books.

A gap.

He pulled the books aside.

The blue ledger was gone.

Daniel's heart sank.

“Someone took it.”

Rachel examined the shelf.

“Recently.”

“How do you know?”

“Dust pattern.”

Daniel looked at the empty space.

Someone had been here.

Recently.

And they knew exactly what they were searching for.

A noise came from downstairs.

Daniel froze.

Rachel reached for her weapon.

Emily stepped behind them.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Heavy.

Approaching.

Daniel whispered:

“Stay here.”

He walked toward the hallway.

A shadow moved across the floor.

Then a man appeared.

Daniel recognized him.

Diane's former assistant.

“Mr. Blackwood.”

Daniel stared.

“What are you doing here?”

The man looked terrified.

“I came to warn you.”

“About what?”

“They know you found the letter.”

“Who?”

He swallowed.

“Diane.”

Daniel's expression hardened.

“Where is she?”

“She took the ledger.”

“Where?”

“I don't know.”

“Then why are you here?”

The man looked toward the windows.

“Because she told me what happens next.”

“What?”

“She plans to destroy the Continuity Trust.”

Daniel's heart dropped.

“How?”

“She has the original authorization documents.”

“Where?”

“In the bank.”

“Which bank?”

The man whispered:

“Your father's private vault.”

Daniel stared.

“Why would she have access?”

“Because your father gave her one key.”

“And who has the other?”

The man looked at Daniel.

“You.”

Daniel reached into his pocket.

His father's old key.

The one he had carried since childhood.

He suddenly understood.

The key wasn't to the chapel.

It wasn't to the house.

It was to the vault.

They reached the private bank before sunrise.

The vault required two keys.

Daniel inserted his.

The second slot was empty.

Rachel looked at him.

“Where's the other key?”

Daniel's expression changed.

“Anna.”

The vault door remained locked.

Then Daniel noticed a message engraved beneath the keyhole.

TWO HEIRS. ONE TRUTH.

Rachel stared.

“Your father designed this.”

Daniel nodded.

“And he knew Anna would eventually return.”

A voice came from behind them.

“Yes.”

Daniel turned.

Anna stood in the corridor.

She was holding the missing blue ledger.

Daniel's heart stopped.

“You.”

Anna smiled sadly.

“I knew you'd find it.”

Daniel stepped toward her.

“Where did you get it?”

“Diane.”

“Why did she give it to you?”

“She didn't.”

Anna looked toward the corridor.

“She tried to destroy it.”

Daniel frowned.

“Then how—”

Anna opened the ledger.

Inside were pages of handwritten transactions.

Names.

Dates.

Accounts.

And one final entry.

Daniel stared at it.

His father's handwriting.

EDWARD HARRINGTON — PAYMENT FOR SILENCE.

Rachel whispered:

“Your father paid Edward.”

Daniel's face changed.

“For what?”

Anna looked at him.

“To keep me alive.”

Silence.

Then she turned another page.

A second payment.

VICTOR BLACKWOOD — PAYMENT FOR COMPLIANCE.

Another.

LINDA BLACKWOOD — PAYMENT FOR PROTECTION.

Another.

DIANE MERCER — PAYMENT FOR RECORDS.

Daniel stared.

His father had not simply hidden money.

He had spent years paying the people around him to protect his children.

But there was one final entry.

One that made Daniel's blood run cold.

EDWARD HARRINGTON — FINAL PAYMENT: $10,000,000.

Date:

The day Daniel's father supposedly died.

Daniel looked up.

“He paid Edward ten million dollars the day he died.”

Anna nodded.

“That's what bought my freedom.”

Daniel stared at the ledger.

“Then why did everyone think he was dead?”

Anna's expression became painful.

“Because he needed Edward to believe the deal had worked.”

Daniel understood.

His father's death had been staged.

His disappearance had been deliberate.

The entire family had been living inside a lie designed to keep Edward from finding the original heirs.

But then Daniel saw the final page.

There was no transaction.

Only a sentence.

THE FINAL PAYMENT WAS NEVER MONEY.

Daniel's heart pounded.

“What does that mean?”

Anna looked at him.

“I think it means our father gave Edward something.”

“What?”

Anna shook her head.

“I don't know.”

Then the vault alarm sounded.

Rachel turned.

Someone had entered the bank.

Daniel looked toward the corridor.

A man's voice echoed through the building.

“Daniel.”

He recognized it immediately.

Edward.

“You've found the ledger.”

Daniel closed it.

Edward continued:

“Now I need you to decide.”

Daniel's jaw tightened.

“Decide what?”

Edward's voice was calm.

“Whether you want your money…”

A pause.

“…or your family.”

Daniel looked at Anna.

Then at the locked vault.

Emily stepped closer.

Daniel realized what Edward was really offering.

The choice wasn't about money.

It was about the final secret his father had hidden.

Whatever the ten-million-dollar payment had purchased, Edward still wanted it.

And if Daniel refused to give it to him, someone would pay.

Emily.

Noah.

Anna.

Perhaps even Linda.

Daniel looked at the vault door.

Then at the blue ledger.

For twenty-three years, his father had sacrificed everything to hide the truth.

Now Daniel had only one question left.

What had his father given Edward to keep his children alive?

May you like

Before sunrise, Daniel would find out.

And when he did, he knew the entire Blackwood family would finally have to answer for it.
