Chapter 5 — The Recording Linda Forgot to Delete

Chapter 5 — The Recording Linda Forgot to Delete
The recording was only eleven minutes and forty-two seconds long.
But it was enough to destroy the story Linda had spent months constructing.
Daniel found it at 2:16 in the morning.
Hidden inside a folder labeled:
HOUSEHOLD AUDIO — TEMP
The folder should have been empty.
Instead, it contained one file.
No title.
No description.
Just a timestamp.
Daniel almost ignored it.
Then he noticed the date.
It was the same night Emily had supposedly “lost control” in the kitchen.
The night Linda had claimed Emily screamed at her.
The night Linda had told Daniel:
“She needs psychiatric help.”
Daniel clicked the file.
A woman's voice filled the room.
Linda.
“Are you going to keep acting like this?”
Emily's voice answered quietly.
“I don't know what you're talking about.”
“You know exactly what I'm talking about.”
“I've done everything you asked.”
“Everything?”
“Yes.”
A pause.
Then Linda laughed.
It wasn't a warm laugh.
It was cold.
“You're still pretending you're a good mother.”
Daniel stopped breathing.
He looked at Emily.
She was sitting beside him.
Her face had gone pale.
“I remember that night.”
Daniel nodded.
“Keep listening.”
The recording continued.
Linda's voice became louder.
“You left the baby's bottle on the counter.”
“I was feeding him.”
“You forgot to sterilize it.”
“I was exhausted.”
“That's always your excuse.”
Emily began crying.
“Please stop.”
“Stop what?”
“Talking to me like this.”
Linda laughed.
“You don't get to tell me what to do in my house.”
Emily whispered:
“This is my house too.”
Silence.
Then a chair scraped against the floor.
Linda spoke again.
“Say that again.”
“This is my house too.”
“Louder.”
Emily didn't answer.
Linda repeated:
“Louder.”
Emily's voice cracked.
“This is my house too.”
Then Linda said something that made Daniel's stomach turn.
“Good.”
Emily asked:
“What?”
“I need you to say it again.”
“Why?”
“So I can remember exactly how disrespectful you are.”
Daniel paused the recording.
Emily covered her face.
“She wanted me angry.”
“Yes.”
“I didn't understand why.”
“She needed a reaction.”
Emily looked at him.
“For the camera.”
Daniel nodded.
They continued.
Linda deliberately began insulting Emily.
“You trapped my son.”
“You've turned him against his family.”
“You don't deserve the baby.”
“You're mentally unstable.”
“You're selfish.”
“You're dangerous.”
Emily tried not to respond.
Her breathing became faster.
Then Linda said:
“Maybe I should call Daniel.”
Emily whispered:
“Don't.”
“Why?”
“He'll worry.”
Linda smiled.
“You should want him to worry.”
“I don't want him to think I'm crazy.”
Silence.
Then Linda's voice became almost gentle.
“That depends on how you behave.”
Daniel stared at the screen.
The recording was no longer simply evidence.
It was a blueprint.
Linda was deliberately pushing Emily toward an emotional reaction.
She wanted her frightened.
Angry.
Desperate.
Then she would record only the final moments.
The recording continued.
Emily said:
“I want you to leave me alone.”
Linda replied:
“Make me.”
“Please.”
“Make me.”
“I don't want to fight.”
“You already are.”
“No.”
“You are.”
Linda's voice rose.
“You're screaming at me.”
Emily immediately answered:
“I'm not screaming.”
“You are.”
“I'm not.”
“Say it again.”
“I'm not screaming.”
Linda suddenly shouted:
“STOP SCREAMING AT ME!”
Emily gasped.
Daniel froze.
Linda had screamed first.
Then immediately accused Emily of doing it.
The recording captured everything.
The entire manipulation.
Every provocation.
Every lie.
Every deliberate escalation.
Then came the sound of something breaking.
Emily cried out.
“What did you do?”
Linda said:
“You threw that.”
“I didn't.”
“You did.”
“You broke it.”
“I didn't touch it.”
Linda laughed.
“You're going to regret this.”
“What are you talking about?”
“You just destroyed property.”
“No.”
“You did.”
“Linda, please.”
“That's enough.”
Footsteps.
A door opened.
Then closed.
The recording ended.
Daniel sat motionless.
Emily was crying.
“I remember the broken vase.”
Daniel looked at her.
“Your mother told me you threw it.”
“I didn't.”
“I believe you.”
Emily shook her head.
“I tried to tell you.”
“I know.”
“She showed you a video.”
“Yes.”
“It started after the vase broke.”
Daniel nodded.
“She removed everything before it.”
Rachel arrived forty minutes later.
Daniel played the recording.
She listened without interrupting.
When it ended, she rewound the final thirty seconds.
“Listen.”
They did.
There was a faint sound in the background.
A second voice.
A man.
Daniel frowned.
“Who is that?”
Rachel increased the audio.
The voice became clearer.
“Did she react?”
Linda answered:
“Yes.”
“Good.”
The man's voice continued:
“Then use the footage.”
Daniel stared at Rachel.
“Who is he?”
“I don't know.”
The recording ended before his face or name appeared.
Rachel looked at Daniel.
“This is important.”
“How important?”
“Extremely.”
“Why?”
“Because it proves intent.”
She pointed at the waveform.
“Linda wasn't documenting abuse.”
“She was manufacturing evidence.”
Rachel extracted the metadata.
The file had been created on a device registered to Linda.
But there was something strange.
The file had been copied three times.
First to Linda's phone.
Then to a private server.
Then to another device.
Rachel identified the third device.
“Mara.”
Daniel looked up.
“Mara Bennett?”
“Yes.”
“She had the recording?”
“Apparently.”
Daniel's mind raced.
“Why?”
Rachel looked at the timestamps.
“The copy was made two days after the incident.”
“By Mara?”
“Looks like it.”
“Then why did she keep it?”
Rachel didn't answer.
Instead, she opened another file.
A message from Mara.
I will preserve the original. Do not alter it.
Linda had replied:
You promised me the footage would be enough.
Mara:
It is. But if you edit the original again, I won't protect you.
Daniel stared.
“Mara knew.”
“Yes.”
“She knew Linda was manipulating Emily.”
“Yes.”
“Then why did she keep working with her?”
Rachel looked at him.
“That is the question.”
They found the answer six minutes later.
Another message.
This time from Victor.
Mara, your job is observation. Not interference.
Mara replied:
Your instructions have changed.
Victor:
No. Yours haven't.
Mara:
Your brother changed them.
Daniel froze.
His father.
Rachel looked at him.
“What did she mean?”
Daniel didn't know.
Then another message appeared.
Mara:
He told me to protect Emily if Linda crossed the line.
Victor:
And did she?
Mara:
You know she did.
Victor:
Then why is Emily still in the house?
Mara:
Because I need more evidence.
Daniel leaned back.
The truth was becoming more complicated.
Mara had been watching.
Linda had been manipulating.
Victor had been directing.
And Daniel's father had apparently ordered Mara to protect Emily.
But why?
Daniel asked Rachel to recover the full conversation.
After twenty minutes, they found it.
The messages had been partially deleted.
But the forensic recovery restored them.
Mara had written:
If you continue this, Emily will eventually break.
Victor answered:
That's the objective.
Mara:
No. The objective was custody.
Victor:
Custody requires proof.
Mara:
You're creating the proof yourself.
Victor:
That's how this family survives.
Daniel stared at that sentence.
He felt sick.
The family.
Always the family.
Every crime had been justified with those words.
At 5:12 a.m., Emily woke.
She had fallen asleep on the couch.
Daniel sat beside her.
She opened her eyes.
“Did you find something?”
“Yes.”
“What?”
“A recording.”
Her expression tightened.
“Of me?”
“Yes.”
“What did it show?”
Daniel hesitated.
“The truth.”
Emily sat up.
“What truth?”
“That your mother deliberately provoked you.”
Emily stared at him.
Then slowly exhaled.
“I knew it.”
Daniel took her hand.
“She wanted you to react.”
“I know.”
“She wanted to record the reaction.”
Emily nodded.
“So everyone would think I was unstable.”
“Yes.”
Emily looked toward the window.
“I thought I was losing my mind.”
“You weren't.”
“I started questioning everything.”
“I know.”
“I wondered if I really was a bad mother.”
Daniel's face tightened.
“You were never a bad mother.”
Emily looked at him.
“I was exhausted.”
“You were manipulated.”
She looked down.
“What's the difference?”
Daniel answered quietly.
“Exhaustion is what happens when you need help.”
“Manipulation is what happens when someone makes you believe you don't deserve it.”
Emily began crying.
Daniel pulled her close.
This time, she didn't resist.
At 7:30 a.m., Rachel called again.
“We found another audio file.”
Daniel's expression changed.
“From Linda?”
“Yes.”
“What is it?”
“A conversation between Linda and Mara.”
“Play it.”
Rachel pressed the button.
Linda's voice:
“She almost broke last night.”
Mara:
“She didn't.”
“She cried.”
“That's not breaking.”
“She will.”
“When?”
“When Daniel stops protecting her.”
Mara became silent.
Linda continued:
“Once he believes she's dangerous, he'll hand the baby to me himself.”
Mara asked:
“And if he doesn't?”
Linda laughed.
“Then we use the final recording.”
Daniel looked at Rachel.
“What final recording?”
The audio continued.
Mara asked:
“What does it show?”
Linda replied:
“Emily holding the baby while he's crying.”
Mara:
“That's not enough.”
Linda:
“It will be.”
“How?”
Linda's voice dropped.
“Because we'll make it look like she was trying to hurt him.”
The recording ended.
Nobody moved.
Emily's face went white.
Daniel stood immediately.
“They were going to fake an attempt on Noah's life.”
Rachel nodded.
“That changes everything.”
“How?”
“This is no longer just a custody scheme.”
She looked at him.
“This is a criminal conspiracy.”
Daniel went upstairs.
Noah was asleep.
He stood beside the crib for a long time.
His son looked peaceful.
Tiny hands.
Tiny fingers.
A soft blanket beneath his chin.
Daniel thought about what could have happened.
Someone could have frightened Emily.
Someone could have drugged her.
Someone could have placed something in her hand.
Someone could have staged an incident.
And then cameras would have captured only the part they wanted the world to see.
Daniel closed his eyes.
They had come dangerously close.
He reached down and touched his son's hand.
“No one is taking you.”
At 9:15 a.m., the police arrived.
Not because Daniel had called them.
Because Rachel had submitted the evidence.
Linda was still asleep when officers entered the house.
She came downstairs wearing a robe.
“What is this?”
The officer read the warrant.
Linda looked at Daniel.
“You did this.”
Daniel said nothing.
She looked at Emily.
“You'll regret this.”
Emily stepped forward.
“No.”
Her voice shook.
But she didn't step back.
“You made me believe I was crazy.”
Linda stared at her.
“You are.”
Emily shook her head.
“No.”
She held up the evidence bag containing the recording.
“You were trying to make me look crazy.”
Linda's face changed.
For the first time, she had nothing to say.
As officers escorted Linda outside, she suddenly stopped.
She turned toward Daniel.
“You think you've won?”
Daniel looked at her.
“What does that mean?”
Linda smiled.
“You found one recording.”
She looked toward the street.
“You haven't found the one that matters.”
Then she was gone.
Daniel stood in the doorway.
Rachel approached him.
“Don't let her scare you.”
Daniel looked at the evidence.
“She isn't.”
“What then?”
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
“She's telling the truth.”
Rachel frowned.
“How do you know?”
“Because if the recording we found was the one she forgot to delete…”
He looked toward the house.
“…then there must be another one she never wanted us to find.”
Rachel went silent.
Daniel turned toward Emily.
“We keep looking.”
Emily nodded.
And somewhere inside the old surveillance archive, another file waited.
A file recorded on the night Linda first entered their home.
A file that contained a conversation between Linda and Victor.
May you like
And this time, they weren't talking about Emily.
They were talking about Daniel.
