Chapter 11 — The Witness Linda Never Expected

Chapter 11 — The Witness Linda Never Expected
The witness arrived at six in the morning.
She didn't call first.
She didn't send an email.
She simply appeared outside Daniel's temporary apartment wearing a faded brown coat and holding an old leather handbag against her chest.
The security guard almost turned her away.
Then she said five words.
“I know what Linda did.”
Daniel heard her through the intercom.
He immediately went downstairs.
The woman looked exhausted.
Older than he expected.
Maybe sixty.
Her gray hair was pulled into a loose knot, and her hands shook slightly as she held the bag.
Daniel opened the door.
“Who are you?”
She looked at him.
“My name is Ruth Ellis.”
Daniel waited.
“I worked for your family for nineteen years.”
His expression changed.
“As what?”
“House manager.”
Daniel stared.
“Then you knew my mother.”
Ruth nodded.
“I knew her better than anyone.”
She looked past him.
“Is Emily safe?”
Daniel's face tightened.
“No.”
Ruth closed her eyes.
“Then I came too late.”
Daniel brought her inside.
Rachel joined them ten minutes later.
Ruth placed her handbag on the table.
“I should have spoken years ago.”
Daniel looked at her.
“Why didn't you?”
“Because Linda warned me.”
“About what?”
“She told me if I ever talked, I'd lose everything.”
“You already lost everything?”
Ruth gave a bitter smile.
“My husband died believing I was protecting your family.”
Daniel frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Ruth opened the handbag.
Inside were photographs.
Receipts.
Printed emails.
Old security logs.
And a small digital recorder.
Daniel stared.
“What is all this?”
“Proof.”
“Of what?”
Ruth looked directly at him.
“Of what your mother did before you came home that night.”
The first photograph showed the kitchen.
Emily stood beside the sink.
Noah was crying in her arms.
Linda stood behind her.
The timestamp was visible.
3:08 p.m.
Daniel's jaw tightened.
The second photograph showed Linda taking a bottle from a cabinet.
The third showed her removing pills from the bottle.
The fourth showed her crushing something into a glass.
Rachel leaned closer.
“Where did you get these?”
Ruth answered:
“I installed the backup camera.”
Daniel stared.
“You?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Linda ordered me to.”
Daniel frowned.
“She wanted to monitor Emily?”
“She said Emily was dangerous.”
Ruth shook her head.
“She wasn't.”
“Then why did you install it?”
“I thought I was helping protect the baby.”
Daniel's voice softened.
“And when did you realize?”
“The first time I watched the footage.”
Ruth's eyes filled with tears.
“Linda wasn't protecting Noah.”
“She was trying to build a case against Emily.”
Rachel picked up the recorder.
“What's on this?”
Ruth hesitated.
“Everything.”
She pressed play.
Linda's voice filled the room.
“Again.”
Emily's voice sounded exhausted.
“I've already cleaned it.”
“Then clean it again.”
“I need to feed Noah.”
“You can feed him when you're finished.”
“He's crying.”
“Let him.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
The recording continued.
Emily began crying.
Linda laughed.
“Perfect.”
Daniel opened his eyes.
“Perfect?”
Ruth nodded.
“She was recording Emily's reaction.”
“For what?”
“To show the court.”
The recording continued.
Linda whispered:
“Cry louder.”
Emily asked:
“Why are you doing this?”
Linda answered:
“Because nobody will believe you when you tell them.”
The recording stopped.
The room fell silent.
Daniel looked at Ruth.
“How many recordings?”
“Thirty-two.”
“Thirty-two?”
“Some are short.”
“Where are they?”
Ruth pointed to the bag.
“I kept copies.”
Rachel immediately secured them.
“These could change everything.”
Ruth nodded.
“I know.”
Daniel asked:
“Why now?”
Ruth looked at him.
“Because Linda isn't the only one being protected.”
Daniel frowned.
“What do you mean?”
“She was taking orders.”
“From Victor?”
Ruth shook her head.
“No.”
“Edward?”
Ruth looked away.
“No.”
Daniel's expression hardened.
“Then who?”
Ruth whispered:
“Your father.”
Daniel froze.
“My father is dead.”
“I know.”
“You're saying he ordered Linda to abuse Emily?”
“No.”
Ruth looked directly at him.
“He ordered her to watch Emily.”
Daniel stared.
“Why?”
“Because he knew someone else was coming.”
“Who?”
“I don't know.”
“You worked for us for nineteen years.”
“Yes.”
“And you don't know?”
Ruth shook her head.
“Your father kept certain things from everyone.”
Rachel interrupted.
“What exactly did he tell Linda?”
Ruth took out an old handwritten note.
Daniel recognized the handwriting immediately.
His father's.
The note read:
If the girl ever becomes a threat to the trust, monitor her. Do not harm her. Do not let Victor know.
Daniel stared.
“The girl.”
Rachel looked at him.
“Emily?”
Ruth shook her head.
“No.”
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
“Who?”
Ruth whispered:
“Anna.”
Daniel felt the room tilt.
“Why would my father think Anna was a threat?”
“She knew something.”
“What?”
“I never found out.”
Ruth reached into the bag again.
She produced another photograph.
It showed Anna as a teenager.
Standing beside a woman Daniel didn't recognize.
On the back was a date.
And a location.
Daniel read it.
“St. Mary's.”
Rachel frowned.
“That's the hospital.”
“The one where Anna disappeared?”
“Yes.”
Ruth nodded.
“She went back there.”
“When?”
“Three years ago.”
Daniel looked up.
“And?”
“She found someone.”
“Who?”
Ruth's hands began trembling.
“A nurse.”
Rachel immediately searched the hospital archives.
The nurse had been named Helen Brooks.
She had worked at St. Mary's for thirty-six years.
And she had been on duty the night Anna disappeared.
Daniel called the hospital.
Helen no longer worked there.
But an address was available.
He wrote it down.
Then looked at Ruth.
“Did Linda know about Helen?”
“Yes.”
“What did she do?”
Ruth swallowed.
“She told me to destroy the nurse's employment records.”
Daniel's expression hardened.
“Did you?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because by then I knew Linda was afraid.”
“Afraid of Helen?”
“No.”
“Of Anna.”
Daniel sat down.
For years, he had believed the story was simple.
Anna disappeared.
His father mourned.
Linda raised him.
Victor took over the family.
Now nothing was simple.
Anna had survived.
His father had known.
Linda had monitored Emily because she was searching for Anna.
Edward had controlled the trust.
Victor had manipulated the money.
And someone had kidnapped Emily and Noah.
Every piece connected to the same secret.
But Ruth had one more surprise.
She opened the digital recorder again.
“There is one recording I never gave Linda.”
“What recording?”
“The night before you came home.”
Daniel's heart tightened.
“Play it.”
Ruth pressed the button.
Linda's voice appeared.
“I don't care what happens to Emily.”
Another voice answered.
A man.
Older.
Calm.
Daniel recognized it immediately.
Victor.
“You have to make it look natural.”
Linda replied:
“I've done everything you asked.”
“Not everything.”
“What else?”
“You need to make Daniel believe Emily is unstable.”
“She already looks exhausted.”
“Good.”
“And the baby?”
“Leave him with her.”
“Why?”
“So Daniel sees how incapable she is.”
Linda hesitated.
“What if he comes home early?”
Victor's voice became cold.
“Then you improvise.”
Daniel's hands clenched.
The recording continued.
Linda asked:
“And if he doesn't believe me?”
Victor laughed.
“He will.”
“Why?”
“Because you're his mother.”
The recording ended.
Daniel stared at the recorder.
Rachel whispered:
“That proves coordination.”
Daniel nodded.
“It proves intent.”
But Ruth wasn't finished.
“There is another voice.”
Daniel looked at her.
“Another?”
“Yes.”
She found the file.
The recording began.
Victor was speaking.
Then another man entered the room.
Daniel listened.
His face slowly changed.
The man's voice was familiar.
Very familiar.
He had heard it earlier that week.
Edward.
Victor said:
“If Daniel discovers the money, we move the boy.”
Edward replied:
“Not yet.”
Victor asked:
“Why?”
“Because the boy isn't the real threat.”
“Then what is?”
Edward answered:
“Anna.”
Daniel froze.
Edward continued:
“If she reaches Daniel, everything collapses.”
Victor asked:
“Should I eliminate her?”
Silence.
Then Edward said:
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because she is the only person who knows where the original documents are.”
The recording stopped.
Daniel stared at Ruth.
“What documents?”
Ruth shook her head.
“I don't know.”
Rachel looked at him.
“Original documents about what?”
Daniel answered quietly:
“The trust.”
At noon, Ruth gave them one final envelope.
“This was hidden in the old house.”
Daniel opened it.
Inside was a key.
A small brass key.
And a note.
For the room beneath the chapel.
Daniel recognized the phrase.
The family chapel.
He had not been there since childhood.
Rachel stared at the key.
“You think that's where the documents are?”
Ruth nodded.
“I think your father hid them there.”
Daniel stood.
“Then we go now.”
Before they left, Ruth stopped him.
“Daniel.”
He turned.
“There is something you need to know.”
“What?”
“I wasn't the only witness.”
Daniel frowned.
“Who else?”
Ruth looked frightened.
“Linda's former driver.”
“Where is he?”
“He disappeared.”
“When?”
“The same night Emily disappeared.”
Daniel's blood ran cold.
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because I received a message.”
“What message?”
Ruth reached into her pocket.
She handed him her phone.
The message was simple.
ONE WITNESS IS ENOUGH. TWO ARE A LIABILITY.
Daniel stared at it.
Rachel's expression hardened.
“They're still cleaning up witnesses.”
Ruth nodded.
“And if they know I gave you these recordings…”
She didn't finish.
Daniel understood.
“You're coming with us.”
Ruth shook her head.
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because if I disappear with you, they'll know exactly where you are.”
Daniel looked at her.
“Then what do you want?”
“Justice.”
She stood.
“I've been afraid for nineteen years.”
Her voice trembled.
“But I'm done.”
That afternoon, Daniel arrived at the family chapel.
The doors were locked.
The brass key fit the lock beneath the altar.
A hidden mechanism clicked.
The stone floor shifted.
A narrow staircase appeared.
Rachel stared into the darkness.
“Your family had a secret basement?”
Daniel nodded.
“Apparently.”
They descended.
At the bottom was a small room.
Dust covered everything.
Boxes lined the walls.
Old photographs.
Legal documents.
Bank records.
And in the center sat a metal safe.
Daniel opened it.
Inside was a single folder.
He removed it.
The label read:
ORIGINAL SUCCESSION AGREEMENT.
Rachel opened it.
Her face changed.
“What?”
She handed Daniel the document.
He read the first paragraph.
Then the second.
His heart began pounding.
The trust had never belonged to Victor.
It had never belonged to Edward.
And it had never belonged to Daniel.
The original heir was Anna.
But beneath her name was a second clause.
Daniel read it aloud.
“If the original heir disappears or is presumed dead, all controlling authority shall temporarily transfer to the next biological child of the Blackwood line.”
Rachel stared.
“That means you.”
Daniel nodded.
“And Noah inherits after me.”
Rachel looked at the final paragraph.
“No.”
“What?”
She pointed.
The clause had been amended.
A handwritten addition.
Unless the original heir returns.
Daniel froze.
“If Anna comes back…”
“Everything goes to her.”
“And Victor loses control.”
“Yes.”
Daniel looked at the documents.
Suddenly, the entire conspiracy made sense.
They didn't want Noah because he was a baby.
They wanted Noah because he was the next link in a succession chain.
But Anna was alive.
And if she returned, the family empire would legally belong to her.
Daniel closed the folder.
“That's why they were hunting her.”
Rachel nodded.
“And why they took Emily.”
“To force me to reveal where Anna is.”
Daniel looked toward the stairs.
The room had suddenly become unbearably quiet.
Then his phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
A woman's voice whispered:
“Daniel?”
He froze.
“Anna?”
“Yes.”
“Where are you?”
“I can't tell you.”
“Are you safe?”
“No.”
His heart dropped.
“What happened?”
“They found Ruth.”
Daniel turned pale.
“What?”
“She was taken twenty minutes ago.”
Rachel looked at him.
Anna continued:
“And they're coming for you next.”
Daniel tightened his grip on the phone.
“Where is Emily?”
Silence.
“Anna.”
“I know where she is.”
“Tell me.”
“I will.”
A pause.
“But first, you need to understand something.”
“What?”
Anna's voice broke.
“The person who took Emily isn't Edward.”
Daniel froze.
“Then who?”
Anna whispered:
“Linda.”
The call ended.
Daniel stared at the phone.
Rachel looked at him.
“Linda is in custody.”
Daniel's expression hardened.
“Exactly.”
He looked down at the succession agreement.
Someone was pretending to be Linda.
Someone had access to the family's secrets.
And someone had just made the one accusation that could destroy the entire case.
Because if Emily had disappeared willingly…
If Linda had somehow arranged it…
Then every piece of evidence Daniel had collected could be turned against him.
And somewhere outside the chapel, a car door slammed.
Daniel looked toward the window.
A black sedan had stopped beside the cemetery.
The witness who had finally spoken had vanished.
Anna was hiding.
May you like
Emily and Noah were missing.
And the person behind it all had just made his next move.
