Chapter 11 — The Betrayal Inside the Family

Chapter 11 — The Betrayal Inside the Family
Elena did not sleep.
By six in the morning, she had read the letter from her grandmother seventeen times.
The photograph lay beside it.
Her father.
Her mother.
Julian's father.
Her grandmother.
All standing together thirty years ago.
All smiling.
All pretending they were building a future.
When Elena turned the photograph over again, the same sentence stared back at her.
THE GIRL MUST NEVER KNOW THAT HER FATHER WAS THE ONE WHO SIGNED THE ORIGINAL DEAL.
She had spent the entire night believing Julian had been the center of the betrayal.
Now she wasn't sure he had even been the beginning.
Her phone rang.
“Em?”
Her father's voice sounded normal.
Too normal.
“Dad.”
“Yes?”
“I need to ask you something.”
A pause.
“Of course.”
“Did you sign a deal before I was born?”
Silence.
Not the silence of confusion.
The silence of a man deciding how much truth he could afford to give.
Elena closed her eyes.
“I'll ask again.”
Her father exhaled.
“Yes.”
The word landed softly.
But it destroyed something inside her.
“You did.”
“Yes.”
“What kind of deal?”
“It's complicated.”
“No.”
Elena's voice hardened.
“It isn't complicated anymore.”
She looked at the photograph.
“You promised me to the Vale family.”
Her father's breathing changed.
“Elena…”
“You agreed to my marriage before I was born.”
“I was trying to protect you.”
“That's what everyone says.”
Her voice cracked.
“Grandma was protecting me.”
“Mom was protecting me.”
“You were protecting me.”
“Julian was protecting me.”
“Everyone was protecting me.”
She laughed bitterly.
“Apparently nobody thought I deserved the truth.”
Her father said nothing.
“Where are you?”
“At the resort.”
“Stay there.”
“Why?”
“Because I need to see you.”
“I'll come to you.”
“No.”
His voice was suddenly sharp.
“Do not leave the resort.”
Elena froze.
“Why?”
Another silence.
Then:
“Because the people who wanted that agreement are still alive.”
The call ended.
Elena stared at the phone.
For the first time, she understood something terrifying.
Her father wasn't afraid of what Elena might discover.
He was afraid of who might discover it with her.
At eight in the morning, Elena entered the private conference room.
Her father was already there.
He looked older than he had the day before.
His suit was wrinkled.
His tie was loose.
He had not slept.
Neither had she.
He stood when she entered.
“Elena.”
She didn't hug him.
“Tell me everything.”
He looked toward the window.
“You deserve the truth.”
“I've deserved it for thirty years.”
He flinched.
She noticed.
“Start with Grandma.”
Her father nodded.
“Your grandmother created the original trust.”
“I know.”
“She believed the Vale family was going to steal the Saint Clair holdings.”
“They did.”
“Not exactly.”
Elena frowned.
“What does that mean?”
“Your grandfather wanted more than money.”
“He wanted control.”
“He wanted the Saint Clair bloodline.”
Elena stared.
“Why?”
“Because your grandmother had something Richard needed.”
“The resorts?”
“No.”
“Then what?”
Her father looked at her.
“You.”
Elena's stomach tightened.
“I was a baby.”
“Exactly.”
He sat.
“I had just inherited voting rights through your mother.”
“Richard couldn't access them because you were a minor.”
“So he made a deal with me.”
Elena slowly sat opposite him.
“What deal?”
“I would give him temporary control.”
“And in exchange?”
“He would protect you.”
She stared.
“That makes no sense.”
“It does when you understand what Richard was threatening.”
“What was he threatening?”
Her father's eyes lowered.
“Your mother.”
Elena went still.
“He threatened Mom?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because your mother had evidence against him.”
“What evidence?”
Her father hesitated.
“Evidence that could have destroyed the entire Vale family.”
Elena leaned forward.
“What evidence?”
“I don't know.”
“You're lying.”
“No.”
“You were there.”
“Yes.”
“Then you know.”
“I knew your mother had something.”
He looked at Elena.
“But she never told me what it was.”
Elena remembered the chapel.
Her mother's fear.
Richard's face.
The old photographs.
The trust.
Everything was becoming more complicated.
“Then why did you sign?”
Her father looked ashamed.
“Because I believed I could outsmart Richard.”
“And could you?”
“No.”
“What happened?”
“Richard took control of the companies.”
“And the trust?”
“I protected it.”
“How?”
“Your grandmother had already built safeguards.”
Her father reached into his coat.
He placed a small black key on the table.
Elena stared.
“What is that?”
“The final access key.”
She didn't touch it.
“Where did you get it?”
“Your grandmother gave it to me the night before she disappeared.”
Elena's eyes widened.
“You had it all this time?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because she told me never to give it to you until you were ready.”
Elena's voice became quiet.
“And who decides when I'm ready?”
Her father looked at her.
“She did.”
He pushed the key toward her.
“You're ready now.”
The door opened.
Julian entered.
Elena immediately stood.
“I told you to leave.”
“I know.”
Her father looked at him.
“Let him stay.”
Elena frowned.
“Why?”
Her father stared at Julian.
“Because he needs to hear this too.”
Julian closed the door.
Her father continued.
“The original agreement had three conditions.”
Julian looked confused.
“What conditions?”
“The first was that the Saint Clair assets would remain under family control.”
“The second was that the Vale family would provide protection.”
“And the third…”
He looked at Elena.
“…was that Elena would eventually marry the designated Vale heir.”
Julian's face tightened.
“Me.”
“Yes.”
Elena's hands curled into fists.
“Who designated him?”
Her father didn't answer.
Julian did.
“My father.”
“No.”
Her father shook his head.
“Your grandfather.”
Julian stared.
“But my father carried out the arrangement.”
“Yes.”
“So he knew.”
“He knew everything.”
Elena looked at Julian.
“And you?”
Julian swallowed.
“I knew my father wanted me to marry you.”
“Did you know about the agreement?”
“No.”
“Did you know about the trust?”
“No.”
“Did you know your family had been planning this for years?”
“No.”
Elena believed him.
That was the problem.
She believed him.
And that frightened her more than the lies.
Her father's phone rang.
He answered.
“Hello?”
His expression changed.
“What?”
He stood.
“Repeat that.”
Elena watched him.
“What happened?”
He covered the receiver.
“The London resort has been attacked.”
Julian stood.
“Who?”
“We don't know.”
Her father returned to the call.
“Are there casualties?”
A pause.
“Get everyone out.”
He hung up.
Elena's heart raced.
“How bad?”
“Someone set fire to the executive offices.”
“Was anything stolen?”
Her father nodded.
“One thing.”
“What?”
“The original trust records.”
Elena stared.
“They knew exactly what to take.”
Julian looked toward her.
“Someone has access to the family archives.”
“Yes.”
Her father reached for his phone.
“There's more.”
“What?”
“The New York headquarters has been breached.”
Elena froze.
“Now?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“Someone used a senior family access code.”
Julian's face hardened.
“Whose?”
Her father looked at Elena.
“Yours.”
The room went silent.
“My code?”
“Yes.”
“I never gave anyone my code.”
“I know.”
Julian frowned.
“Then someone copied it.”
Her father shook his head.
“Not copied.”
“Used.”
Elena's eyes narrowed.
“Who has access?”
“Your father.”
“Your mother.”
“Me.”
“Julian.”
“And three trustees.”
Elena looked at him.
“Who are the trustees?”
Her father hesitated.
“Your aunt Margaret.”
Elena frowned.
“I don't have an Aunt Margaret.”
“Yes, you do.”
“She's dead.”
“No.”
Her father looked away.
“She disappeared twenty-three years ago.”
Elena felt cold.
“Why?”
“She knew too much.”
“About the trust?”
“About the family.”
Julian asked:
“Where is she?”
Her father answered:
“We don't know.”
The security system suddenly activated.
Red lights flashed across the room.
An automated voice announced:
UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS DETECTED.
Elena turned toward the monitor.
A file was being opened.
The title appeared.
ORIGINAL FAMILY AGREEMENT — CONFIDENTIAL
Then:
USER: ELENA SAINT CLAIR
She stepped closer.
“That isn't me.”
The screen displayed a live camera feed.
A woman sat in a dark room.
Elena stared.
She recognized her.
The woman was older.
Her hair was silver.
Her face was thin.
But the eyes were unmistakable.
“Aunt Margaret.”
Julian stepped closer.
“Who is she?”
Elena's father looked devastated.
“My sister.”
Margaret looked directly into the camera.
Then smiled.
“Hello, little Elena.”
Elena's blood ran cold.
“You're alive.”
“Yes.”
“Why did you disappear?”
Margaret's smile vanished.
“Because your father tried to kill me.”
Her father stood abruptly.
“That isn't true.”
Margaret laughed.
“Still lying.”
Elena looked between them.
“Why would Dad try to kill you?”
“Because I found out what he did.”
“What?”
Margaret leaned closer to the camera.
“Your father didn't sign the original agreement to protect you.”
Elena's heart stopped.
“Then why?”
Margaret's eyes hardened.
“Because he wanted the Vale fortune.”
Her father shook his head.
“Margaret, stop.”
“You wanted their money.”
“No.”
“You wanted their companies.”
“No.”
“You wanted to become the richest man in the family.”
“I was trying to save Elena.”
Margaret smiled.
“That's the lie you told yourself.”
Elena felt tears burning her eyes.
“Dad?”
He didn't answer.
Margaret continued.
“Your father was not the hero.”
“He was not the villain either.”
“He was something worse.”
Elena whispered:
“What?”
Margaret's face became expressionless.
“He was willing to sacrifice everyone if it meant winning.”
The feed suddenly cut out.
Elena turned toward her father.
“Is it true?”
He looked at her.
“Not all of it.”
“That isn't an answer.”
“I made mistakes.”
“You lied to me.”
“Yes.”
“You manipulated my marriage.”
“Yes.”
“You used my inheritance.”
“Yes.”
“You threatened your own sister.”
“No.”
He stepped toward her.
“I never tried to kill Margaret.”
Elena backed away.
“Then why did she disappear?”
“I don't know.”
“Where is she now?”
“I don't know.”
A voice came from behind them.
“I do.”
Everyone turned.
Julian's assistant stood in the doorway.
He held a folder.
“Elena.”
She stared.
“What?”
He placed the folder on the table.
“We found the location of Margaret Saint Clair.”
Her father went pale.
“Where?”
The assistant looked at Elena.
“Inside one of your family's properties.”
“Which one?”
He hesitated.
“The resort.”
Elena frowned.
“Which resort?”
“The one Julian was staying in.”
Julian's face changed.
“My resort?”
“No.”
Elena corrected him.
“Our resort.”
The assistant nodded.
“Yes.”
They arrived two hours later.
The resort had been evacuated.
Police surrounded the property.
Smoke still rose from the executive wing.
Elena walked through the damaged corridor.
Everything smelled of ash.
Julian followed.
“This was done professionally.”
Her father nodded.
“They weren't trying to destroy the resort.”
“They were searching for something.”
Elena stopped.
“For Margaret.”
A security officer approached.
“Ms. Saint Clair.”
“What did you find?”
“We found a hidden room.”
“Where?”
“Behind the presidential suite.”
Julian stared.
“That suite was mine.”
Elena looked at him.
“Apparently not.”
They entered.
Behind a false wall was a narrow staircase.
It led downward.
At the bottom was a small room.
Inside stood a desk.
A chair.
A bed.
And hundreds of documents.
Elena picked up the first folder.
SAINT CLAIR FAMILY — INTERNAL SURVEILLANCE
She opened it.
Photographs.
Her father.
Her mother.
Julian's father.
Richard.
Julian.
Elena.
Everyone.
Someone had been watching the family for decades.
Then she saw a photograph that made her stop.
It showed her as a little girl.
Standing beside her father.
And behind them was Margaret.
But Margaret was holding something.
The emerald.
Elena touched the photograph.
“She had it.”
Julian looked closer.
“That means she had access to the trust.”
“Yes.”
A sound came from the darkness.
Someone was breathing.
Elena turned.
“Who's there?”
A woman stepped forward.
Margaret.
Alive.
Older.
Terrified.
She looked at Elena.
“I've been waiting for you.”
Elena's father raised his weapon.
Margaret shook her head.
“Don't.”
“Stay away from my daughter.”
Margaret laughed bitterly.
“Your daughter?”
She looked at Elena.
“Ask him who your real father is.”
Elena froze.
“What?”
Her father went pale.
Julian stepped forward.
“Margaret…”
She interrupted him.
“Tell her.”
Elena turned toward her father.
“Tell me what?”
He couldn't speak.
Margaret's voice became quiet.
“Your father isn't the man who raised you.”
The world seemed to stop.
Elena stared at the woman.
“No.”
Margaret nodded.
“Yes.”
Her father lowered his weapon.
“Margaret, please.”
But she continued.
“Your mother had an affair.”
Elena's face went white.
“And the man she loved…”
Margaret looked at Julian.
“…was a Vale.”
Silence.
Julian's eyes widened.
Elena looked at him.
Then at her father.
Then at Margaret.
“No.”
Margaret whispered:
“That's why the marriage was never just about money.”
Elena couldn't breathe.
“Who?”
Margaret stepped closer.
“The truth is worse than you think.”
She looked directly into Elena's eyes.
“Your biological father was Alexander Vale.”
Julian's face went blank.
Because Alexander Vale was his father.
Which meant the man Elena had spent her life believing was her enemy…
was also the man whose blood ran through her veins.
And Julian—
her husband—
was her half-brother.
Elena staggered backward.
“No…”
Margaret caught her arm.
“I'm sorry.”
Elena looked at Julian.
He was just as horrified.
Then her father whispered the words that shattered the room.
“It's true.”
The world went silent.
The empire.
The trust.
The marriage.
The lies.
Everything had been built around one impossible secret.
Elena had never married into the Vale family.
She had been born into it.
May you like
And suddenly, the greatest betrayal inside her family wasn't that they had stolen her inheritance.
It was that they had stolen her entire identity.
