Chapter 5 — The Boardroom at Midnight

Chapter 5 — The Boardroom at Midnight

At 11:52 p.m., the Saint Clair headquarters should have been empty.

It wasn't.

Every light on the forty-second floor was burning.

Every elevator had been locked to executive access.

Every security guard had been ordered to remain at his post.

And behind the glass doors of the largest boardroom in the building, twelve people were waiting.

No one spoke.

No one looked comfortable.

Because the woman sitting at the head of the table was Elena Saint Clair.

And beside her was the man who had spent the last nine years pretending he owned everything.

Julian Mercer.

He looked exhausted.

His tie was loose.

His eyes were bloodshot.

His hands rested flat against the polished table.

Across from him sat Elena's father.

Thomas Saint Clair.

The family attorney.

Two trustees.

The chief financial officer.

The heads of the international resorts.

And Amelia Grant.

The room felt less like a corporate meeting than a trial.

Elena looked at the clock.

11:54.

“We're missing one person.”

Amelia nodded.

“Yes.”

“Who?”

“Your uncle.”

Elena's expression tightened.

“I don't have an uncle.”

Her father looked away.

The elevator bell sounded.

Everyone turned.

The doors opened.

A woman stepped out.

Black coat.

Black gloves.

Dark hair.

Calm eyes.

She walked through security without resistance.

Because security already knew her.

Elena stood.

The woman entered the boardroom.

For several seconds, neither moved.

Then the woman removed her gloves.

“My name is Victoria Saint Clair.”

Elena's heart stopped.

The woman looked around the room.

“I believe this meeting concerns my inheritance.”

No one spoke.

Julian stared at Victoria.

Then at Elena.

Then at Thomas.

“You knew she was coming.”

Thomas didn't answer.

Julian laughed bitterly.

“Of course.”

Victoria looked at him.

“You're Julian Mercer.”

“Yes.”

“The husband.”

Julian's jaw tightened.

“Ex-husband, apparently.”

Victoria smiled faintly.

“Not yet.”

Elena looked at her.

“Why are you here?”

Victoria walked toward the table.

“Because at midnight, the trust changes.”

Elena frowned.

“What changes?”

Victoria placed a document on the table.

“The beneficiary structure.”

Thomas stood abruptly.

“Victoria.”

She looked at him.

“Sit down.”

The room went silent.

Thomas actually obeyed.

Elena stared at her father.

She had never seen anyone speak to him that way.

Victoria took the empty chair.

“My grandfather created the Saint Clair Family Trust for three generations.”

Elena interrupted.

“My grandfather?”

“Yes.”

“And you're the first beneficiary?”

“I was.”

Victoria opened the document.

“Until I disappeared.”

Elena's throat tightened.

“What happened to you?”

Victoria looked at Thomas.

“Ask him.”

Elena turned.

“Dad?”

Thomas couldn't meet her eyes.

Victoria answered for him.

“I was thirteen when they took me.”

“Who?”

“Your grandfather.”

“Why?”

“Because I found the original ledger.”

Elena frowned.

“What ledger?”

“The ledger proving where the Saint Clair fortune came from.”

Victoria reached into her coat.

She placed a thin black notebook on the table.

The cover was cracked with age.

Elena stared at it.

“What's inside?”

“Names.”

“Whose names?”

“Every person your grandfather betrayed.”

Silence.

Victoria continued.

“Politicians.”

“Bankers.”

“Judges.”

“Competitors.”

“And one family.”

Elena looked at her.

“Which family?”

Victoria's eyes hardened.

“The family that owned the land before the Saint Clairs.”

Julian leaned forward.

“Are you saying the entire empire was stolen?”

Victoria looked at him.

“Not stolen.”

She paused.

“Purchased with blood.”

At 11:58, the CFO received an alert.

He checked his phone.

His face drained of color.

“Elena.”

“What?”

“Someone has initiated a trust transfer.”

“Who?”

He looked at the screen.

“Victoria.”

Elena turned toward her.

“You did this?”

Victoria nodded.

“At midnight, my original beneficiary rights reactivate.”

Thomas slammed his hand on the table.

“They were terminated.”

“No.”

“You disappeared.”

“I was a child.”

“The trustees ruled—”

“The trustees were appointed by your father.”

Thomas went silent.

Victoria looked at Elena.

“Your grandfather forged the succession amendment.”

Elena's stomach dropped.

“Then the trust isn't mine?”

Victoria shook her head.

“Not entirely.”

She opened another document.

“It's ours.”

The clock changed.

11:59.

Every monitor in the room flickered.

The Saint Clair corporate seal appeared.

Then a countdown.

00:00:30

Julian stood.

“What happens at midnight?”

Victoria looked at him.

“The trust activates.”

“And?”

“You're going to find out.”

The countdown continued.

00:00:20

Elena's father stood.

“Victoria, don't do this.”

“You had twenty-seven years to tell the truth.”

“I was protecting Elena.”

“No.”

Victoria's voice broke for the first time.

“You were protecting yourself.”

Thomas looked down.

The countdown reached ten.

Elena looked between them.

“Dad.”

He didn't answer.

“Did you know my grandfather killed Grandma?”

Silence.

Victoria answered.

“Yes.”

Elena's face went pale.

“Did you?”

Thomas whispered:

“I knew she died.”

“That's not what I asked.”

He closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

Elena stepped backward.

“You knew.”

“I was sixteen.”

“You knew.”

“I was a child.”

“You knew.”

Tears filled his eyes.

“And I was afraid.”

The countdown reached three.

Two.

One.

Midnight.

Every screen went black.

Then a single sentence appeared.

THE SAINT CLAIR TRUST IS NOW ACTIVE.

The room erupted.

Phones vibrated.

Emails flooded inboxes.

Bank alerts appeared.

Corporate systems locked.

The CFO stared at his screen.

“Oh my God.”

Elena turned.

“What?”

He looked up.

“Every resort has changed ownership status.”

“To whom?”

He swallowed.

“Joint beneficiaries.”

Elena looked at Victoria.

Victoria nodded.

“You and me.”

At 12:03 a.m., Julian's phone buzzed.

He read the notification.

His remaining corporate authority had been terminated.

He was no longer CEO.

No longer director.

No longer authorized signatory.

No longer an approved operating partner.

His access to company accounts was gone.

He looked at Elena.

“Did you do this?”

“No.”

Victoria answered.

“I did.”

Julian stood.

“You can't.”

“I just did.”

“This is my company.”

Victoria smiled.

“No.”

She leaned forward.

“This is exactly what you never understood.”

She pointed toward Elena.

“You were allowed to manage it because she trusted you.”

Then toward herself.

“And I was the original beneficiary.”

Julian looked at Elena.

“Elena.”

She said nothing.

“Tell her to stop.”

Elena shook her head.

“I can't.”

“Why?”

“Because she's right.”

His face changed.

“You're choosing her?”

Elena looked at him.

“I'm choosing the truth.”

Julian laughed.

“You've been waiting for this.”

“No.”

She looked at the trust documents.

“I've been waiting to understand it.”

Julian stared at her.

“And now?”

Elena met his eyes.

“Now I understand everything.”

At 12:16, the boardroom doors opened.

Sabrina entered.

Everyone turned.

She wore a black dress and carried a folder.

Elena recognized her immediately.

“Sabrina.”

Sabrina stopped.

Victoria looked at her.

“You came.”

Elena's heart sank.

“You know her?”

Victoria smiled.

“Of course.”

Sabrina walked to Victoria.

“I have what you wanted.”

She handed her the folder.

Victoria opened it.

Inside were copies of Julian's private financial records.

Offshore transfers.

Hidden accounts.

Payments to politicians.

Undisclosed properties.

Everything.

Elena stared at Sabrina.

“You betrayed Julian.”

Sabrina looked at her.

“He betrayed me first.”

Julian's face went white.

“You.”

Sabrina turned toward him.

“You left me with nothing.”

“I was going to fix it.”

“No.”

Her voice was cold.

“You were going to replace me.”

Julian said nothing.

Sabrina looked at Elena.

“I don't expect forgiveness.”

Elena nodded.

“You won't get it.”

Sabrina accepted that.

“I didn't come for forgiveness.”

“Then why?”

“To survive.”

Victoria closed the folder.

“You'll get your payment.”

Elena frowned.

“Payment?”

Sabrina looked at her.

“You don't understand.”

“I understand perfectly.”

“No.”

Sabrina stepped closer.

“Your aunt promised me something.”

Elena looked at Victoria.

“What?”

Victoria smiled.

“Protection.”

Elena's eyes narrowed.

“From whom?”

Sabrina didn't answer.

Victoria did.

“From the people who are coming.”

The boardroom fell silent.

“What people?” Elena asked.

Victoria closed the folder.

“The families who built the empire before the Saint Clairs took it.”

At 12:42 a.m., the building lost power.

Every light went out.

The emergency lights turned red.

Security alarms screamed.

Someone shouted from the hallway.

Then came a gunshot.

Everyone froze.

Another.

Glass shattered somewhere below.

Elena's father grabbed her.

“Down.”

Victoria stood.

“It's started.”

Julian stared at her.

“What has?”

Victoria looked toward the window.

Far below, black vehicles were entering the Saint Clair headquarters parking lot.

Dozens of them.

Elena looked down.

“Who are they?”

Victoria's expression became grim.

“The original owners.”

Thomas whispered:

“They found us.”

Elena looked at him.

“Who?”

He finally said the name.

“The Morettis.”

Victoria nodded.

“The family your grandfather destroyed.”

Elena felt cold.

“Why are they here?”

Victoria looked directly at her.

“Because your grandfather stole more than money.”

“What else?”

“His actions destroyed their entire bloodline.”

Another gunshot echoed.

Security officers rushed into the boardroom.

“Ms. Saint Clair!”

Elena turned.

“What?”

“We're under attack.”

Victoria calmly picked up the black ledger.

“Then it's time.”

“For what?”

“To tell you the last secret.”

Elena stared at her.

“What secret?”

Victoria opened the ledger.

Her finger stopped on a name.

RAYMOND SAINT CLAIR.

Elena's father.

She looked up.

“My father?”

Victoria nodded.

“He wasn't your grandfather's victim.”

Elena's heart dropped.

“What are you saying?”

Victoria closed the book.

“He was his partner.”

Thomas stood frozen.

Elena looked at him.

“Dad?”

His face crumbled.

Victoria continued.

“Your father didn't build the empire alone.”

She pointed toward Thomas.

“He helped him.”

Elena couldn't breathe.

“And your mother?”

Victoria's voice softened.

“She found out.”

Elena felt the room spin.

“What happened to her?”

Victoria looked at Thomas.

“Ask him.”

Elena turned.

“Dad.”

Thomas began to cry.

“I didn't kill her.”

Elena's voice broke.

“Then what did you do?”

“I tried to save her.”

“From whom?”

Thomas couldn't answer.

Victoria whispered:

“From your grandfather.”

Elena stared at her.

“And did you?”

Thomas lowered his head.

“No.”

Silence.

Then Elena heard something.

A faint sound behind the wall.

Three knocks.

Pause.

Three knocks.

Her blood turned cold.

Victoria looked toward the wall.

“You hear that?”

Elena nodded.

“What is it?”

Victoria's expression changed.

“Someone is inside.”

Security moved toward the wall.

Thomas shouted:

“Stop!”

Everyone turned.

His face was white.

“Don't open it.”

Elena stared at him.

“Why?”

He whispered:

“Because that's where your mother was buried.”

The room went completely silent.

Elena's knees nearly gave way.

Victoria stepped forward.

“Not buried.”

She looked at Thomas.

“Hidden.”

Three more knocks sounded.

Elena stared at the wall.

Then a woman's voice came through the concrete.

Weak.

Faint.

But unmistakably alive.

“Elena?”

Her heart stopped.

She knew that voice.

She had heard it every night in her childhood dreams.

“Mom?”

The voice came again.

“Please…”

Elena covered her mouth.

“Mom?”

Victoria grabbed her arm.

“Don't.”

“That's my mother.”

“No.”

Victoria looked terrified.

“That isn't your mother.”

The voice whispered again.

“Elena…”

Then another voice came through the wall.

A man's voice.

Low.

Cold.

Familiar.

“Open the door, sweetheart.”

Elena froze.

She knew that voice too.

Her grandfather.

But he had been dead for eighteen years.

And suddenly the entire boardroom understood the same terrifying truth.

The Saint Clair family had not been hiding a dead woman's body.

They had been hiding a living secret.

And whatever was behind that wall had been waiting for Elena to come home.

The lights flickered back on.

May you like

The wall moved.

And a hidden door slowly opened.
