Chapter 9 — The Woman Who Knew Too Much

Chapter 9 — The Woman Who Knew Too Much

The screen went black.

Elena didn't move.

For several seconds, nobody in the underground control room spoke.

The last sentence remained in her mind.

YOUR MOTHER KNOWS WHY.

Her mother knew.

Not suspected.

Not guessed.

Knew.

Elena turned toward Julian.

He looked as shaken as she felt.

“My name was in the trust,” he whispered.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“I don't know.”

He looked at his father.

Alexander had gone completely still.

“You knew,” Julian said.

Alexander didn't answer.

“Dad.”

Nothing.

“You knew my name was in that account.”

Alexander finally looked at him.

“Yes.”

Julian's face hardened.

“How long?”

“Since before you were born.”

The answer seemed to knock the air from the room.

Elena stared at Alexander.

“You knew Julian was connected to my family.”

“Yes.”

“You knew the marriage might activate the trust.”

“Yes.”

“And you still sent him to me.”

Alexander's jaw tightened.

“I didn't send him to you.”

Julian laughed bitterly.

“You told me to pursue her.”

“I told you to understand the Saint Clair family.”

“You told me to marry her.”

“I told you to stay close.”

“That is the same thing.”

“No.”

Alexander's eyes turned cold.

“It isn't.”

Elena stepped between them.

“Then tell me the difference.”

Alexander looked at her.

“The difference is that your mother changed the plan.”

Three floors above them, a woman was sitting alone in an abandoned office.

Her hands were tied.

Her temple was bleeding.

But Isabella Saint Clair was not crying.

She had spent twenty-seven years preparing for this night.

The man standing across from her thought he had finally won.

He was wrong.

“Where is the emerald?” he demanded.

Isabella looked at him.

“You're too late.”

He slammed his hand against the desk.

“Where is it?”

She smiled.

“You still don't understand.”

“Understand what?”

“The emerald was never the key.”

His expression changed.

“Then what is?”

Isabella leaned back.

“My daughter.”

The man walked closer.

He was wearing a dark suit.

No mask.

No attempt to hide his identity.

Isabella knew him.

She had known him for decades.

“You shouldn't have survived,” he said.

“I survived because your father needed me.”

“He needed information.”

“He needed the truth.”

“He needed the trust.”

Isabella shook her head.

“He needed Elena.”

The man stared at her.

“Why?”

“Because Margaret designed everything around her.”

“Your mother-in-law was obsessed with that child.”

“She wasn't.”

Isabella's voice became colder.

“She was protecting her.”

“From whom?”

Isabella smiled.

“You.”

Back in the underground control room, Elena stared at the frozen terminal.

“Where is my mother?”

Alexander answered:

“We find her.”

“How?”

“The account.”

He pointed toward the screen.

“Your activation exposed the hidden network.”

“Then use it.”

“I need access.”

Elena looked at him.

“You said you knew how.”

“I know how to open it.”

“Then open it.”

Alexander hesitated.

Julian noticed.

“What are you afraid of?”

Alexander looked at his son.

“The account wasn't built to expose one person.”

“Then what?”

“Everyone.”

Victoria stepped closer.

“Everyone who ever touched the Saint Clair empire.”

Alexander nodded.

“Bankers.”

“Politicians.”

“Lawyers.”

“Executives.”

“Security officials.”

“And members of your own family.”

Elena's expression hardened.

“Good.”

Alexander frowned.

“Good?”

“If they are involved, I want them exposed.”

He studied her.

“You don't understand what happens when powerful people lose their secrets.”

Elena looked directly into his eyes.

“I've already lost everything that mattered.”

She paused.

“I'm not afraid of losing the rest.”

The terminal suddenly activated.

A map appeared.

Thousands of points of light spread across the screen.

Properties.

Bank accounts.

Companies.

Private aircraft.

Ships.

Offshore structures.

Elena stared.

“This is the network.”

Victoria nodded.

“It's enormous.”

Alexander looked horrified.

“No.”

Elena turned.

“What?”

“That shouldn't be visible.”

“Why?”

“Because the system was supposed to reveal only the assets.”

“Then why is it showing people?”

Alexander didn't answer.

Names began appearing.

One after another.

HENRY VALE — DECEASED

RICHARD VALE — DECEASED

THOMAS SAINT CLAIR — ACTIVE

ISABELLA SAINT CLAIR — ACTIVE

Then another name.

Elena stopped breathing.

JULIAN ALEXANDER VALE — PRIMARY BENEFICIARY

And below it:

ELENA MARGARET SAINT CLAIR — PRIMARY BENEFICIARY

Victoria whispered:

“It's showing both of them.”

Then the screen flashed.

ORIGINAL AGREEMENT: TWO BLOODLINES.

Elena looked at Julian.

“What does that mean?”

He shook his head.

“I don't know.”

Alexander did.

He closed his eyes.

“It means your families were never supposed to be enemies.”

Elena's expression changed.

“Then why were they?”

“Because Richard made them enemies.”

“Why?”

Alexander's voice was quiet.

“For control.”

The screen displayed an old document.

The date was thirty-one years earlier.

Elena read it.

JOINT SUCCESSION AGREEMENT

The names at the bottom were:

MARGARET SAINT CLAIR

and

RICHARD VALE

Elena stared.

“This was before Grandma died.”

“Yes.”

“They agreed to merge the families.”

Alexander nodded.

“Through their grandchildren.”

Julian looked at him.

“Us?”

“Yes.”

Elena's stomach twisted.

“So my marriage…”

“Was part of the agreement.”

Julian looked devastated.

“My father knew.”

“Yes.”

“My mother knew?”

Alexander hesitated.

“Yes.”

Elena turned.

“Mom knew?”

“She knew the original agreement existed.”

“Did she know Julian was the other beneficiary?”

“Yes.”

Elena's eyes filled with tears.

“Then why did she let me marry him?”

Alexander looked at her.

“Because she believed you could change the agreement.”

“Why?”

“Because your grandmother trusted you.”

Elena shook her head.

“This doesn't make sense.”

“It will.”

Alexander pointed toward the map.

“Look.”

A location began flashing.

ORIGINAL SAINT CLAIR HOUSE.

Elena's eyes widened.

“My mother.”

“Yes.”

The map zoomed in.

Three people appeared.

One was Isabella.

Another was an unknown security officer.

The third was—

Elena froze.

“Dad.”

Thomas Saint Clair was standing inside the house.

He was holding a gun.

Elena's phone rang.

She answered immediately.

“Dad?”

Silence.

“Dad!”

His voice finally came through.

“Elena.”

“Where is Mom?”

He breathed heavily.

“Don't come here.”

“Why?”

“Because I can't protect you.”

“You're holding a gun.”

“I know.”

“Why?”

“Because they're here.”

“Who?”

Thomas hesitated.

Then:

“Your mother.”

Elena's heart stopped.

“Is Mom okay?”

“Yes.”

“Then why are you pointing a gun?”

“I’m not pointing it at her.”

“Then at whom?”

Silence.

Elena heard another voice in the background.

A man's voice.

Calm.

Familiar.

“Give me the phone.”

Elena froze.

She knew that voice.

Julian looked at her.

“What?”

Elena whispered:

“Your father.”

Alexander's face went pale.

“My father is here?”

Elena put the phone on speaker.

Alexander's voice came through.

“Thomas.”

Thomas answered:

“Alexander.”

“You shouldn't be alive.”

“Neither should you.”

Elena stepped forward.

“Stop.”

Both men went silent.

“Where is my mother?”

Thomas answered:

“She is safe.”

“Then let her go.”

“I can't.”

“Why?”

“Because if I let her go, they will kill you.”

Elena's heart tightened.

“Who?”

Thomas's voice broke.

“The people who have controlled this family for thirty years.”

Alexander whispered:

“The board.”

Elena looked at him.

“What board?”

Alexander stared at the screen.

“The original board.”

The name meant nothing to Elena.

It meant everything to Alexander.

“The Saint Clair empire wasn't controlled by your grandfather alone,” he explained.

“It had a private governing body.”

“Seven people.”

“They controlled the hidden trust.”

“They decided who could inherit.”

“They decided who could be removed.”

“And they were responsible for keeping the family divided.”

Elena looked at the phone.

“Who are they?”

Thomas answered:

“Four are dead.”

“Two disappeared.”

“One is still alive.”

Elena's stomach dropped.

“Who?”

Thomas didn't answer.

The man in the background did.

“Your mother.”

Silence.

Elena stared at the phone.

“My mother?”

“No,” Thomas said quickly.

“He means she knows who it is.”

The other man laughed.

“She knows everything.”

Isabella suddenly spoke.

“That's enough.”

Her voice was weak.

But clear.

“Elena.”

“Mom?”

“Listen to me.”

“I'm listening.”

“Your grandmother didn't create the trust to protect the fortune.”

Elena swallowed.

“Then what?”

“She created it to expose the board.”

Elena's heart raced.

“The money was bait.”

“Yes.”

“The account?”

“Bait.”

“The emerald?”

“Bait.”

“The inheritance?”

“Bait.”

“Then what was the real purpose?”

Isabella's voice trembled.

“To make every person who betrayed our family reveal themselves.”

Elena looked at the terminal.

The names.

The accounts.

The hidden companies.

Everything suddenly made sense.

The trust wasn't merely holding money.

It was a trap.

Every person who accessed it left a record.

Every person who moved its assets became visible.

Every person who tried to destroy it triggered another layer.

And now Elena had activated it.

She had opened the trap.

Victoria whispered:

“That's why your grandmother waited.”

Elena nodded.

“She needed the right person.”

“Why you?”

Elena looked at the emerald.

“Because I was the only one nobody expected to fight back.”

A gunshot exploded through the phone.

Elena screamed.

“Mom!”

The line went dead.

Julian grabbed Elena's arm.

“We're going.”

Alexander shook his head.

“It's a trap.”

“I don't care.”

“You'll die.”

“Then help me survive.”

Alexander stared at her.

Then he reached for his coat.

“Fine.”

Victoria picked up a weapon.

Julian followed.

Elena looked at the terminal.

“Can we track the call?”

Alexander nodded.

“Already doing it.”

A location appeared.

Elena recognized it.

“The old Saint Clair chapel.”

Alexander frowned.

“No.”

“What?”

“That chapel has been abandoned for thirty years.”

“Apparently not.”

They reached the chapel twenty minutes later.

The building stood beneath a stormy sky.

Rain struck the stained-glass windows.

The doors were open.

Too open.

Elena walked inside.

“Mom?”

Her voice echoed.

No answer.

Julian followed closely.

Then the lights turned on.

Isabella was sitting in the front pew.

Alive.

Unharmed.

Thomas stood beside her.

His gun was on the floor.

Elena ran toward her.

“Mom!”

Isabella held her daughter tightly.

For several seconds, they simply cried.

Then Elena pulled away.

“Who did this?”

Isabella looked behind her.

At the altar.

A man stood in the shadows.

Alexander's face changed.

Julian froze.

Elena recognized him from the photograph.

The man who had supposedly been dead.

Richard Vale.

Her grandfather.

Alive.

He stepped into the light.

Elena couldn't breathe.

Her entire life had been built around his death.

The funeral.

The photographs.

The grave.

The stories.

All lies.

Richard smiled.

“My granddaughter.”

Elena stared at him.

“You're alive.”

“Yes.”

“You let everyone believe you were dead.”

“Yes.”

“You let Grandma disappear.”

His smile faded.

“That was complicated.”

“You lied to Mom.”

“Yes.”

“You destroyed my family.”

He looked at her.

“No.”

Richard's eyes shifted toward Julian.

“Your family destroyed itself.”

Julian stepped forward.

“You used me.”

Richard laughed.

“I gave you a purpose.”

“You made me marry Elena.”

“I gave you the opportunity to become powerful.”

“You destroyed her life.”

Richard looked at Elena.

“I gave her something more valuable than money.”

Elena's voice was cold.

“What?”

“The truth.”

She shook her head.

“No.”

Richard smiled.

“You haven't seen the truth yet.”

He pointed toward the altar.

A large wooden box sat there.

Inside was a collection of photographs.

One photograph showed Margaret.

Another showed Isabella.

Another showed Elena as a newborn.

And beside her crib stood Julian.

But he was only a few years old.

Elena stared.

“That's impossible.”

Richard smiled.

“They met long before either of them understood why.”

Julian stepped closer.

“What is this?”

Richard looked at him.

“The beginning of your marriage.”

Elena turned toward Julian.

He looked horrified.

“I don't remember this.”

“You wouldn't.”

Richard smiled.

“You were four.”

Then Richard opened the final photograph.

It showed Margaret holding baby Elena.

Beside her stood Isabella.

And behind them was a young Alexander Vale.

On the back of the photograph was a handwritten sentence.

THE TWO CHILDREN WILL UNITE THE FAMILIES.

Elena stared.

Her marriage had been planned before she could speak.

Before Julian could understand.

Before either of them had a choice.

Then Richard said the words that changed everything.

“Your mother didn't tell you the truth because she was trying to protect you from me.”

He looked at Isabella.

“But she forgot one thing.”

“What?”

Richard smiled.

“She was the one who started the plan.”

Elena turned sharply.

“Mom?”

Isabella's face collapsed.

“Elena…”

“Did you arrange my marriage?”

“No.”

Richard interrupted.

“She agreed to it.”

Elena stared at her mother.

“Is that true?”

Isabella began crying.

“I agreed to the original arrangement.”

Elena's heart shattered.

“Why?”

“Because I believed it would save you.”

“From who?”

Isabella looked at Richard.

“From him.”

Richard smiled.

“But your mother didn't know I would survive.”

Elena looked at Julian.

Then at the man who had stolen her family's name.

Suddenly, the entire story of her life looked different.

The marriage.

The empire.

The trust.

The emerald.

The hidden account.

None of it had begun with Julian.

It had begun with a deal made before she was born.

And now the man who had created that deal was standing in front of her.

Richard stepped closer.

“There's one final thing you don't know.”

Elena's voice was barely audible.

“What?”

He pointed toward Julian.

“He wasn't supposed to marry you.”

Julian's face went pale.

Richard smiled.

“He was supposed to kill you.”

The chapel fell silent.

Elena stared at her husband.

Julian couldn't speak.

Richard's voice echoed through the empty church.

“But he failed.”

He looked at Elena.

“Because somewhere along the way…”

Richard smiled.

“…he actually fell in love with you.”

And for the first time that night, Elena had no idea which betrayal frightened her more:

May you like

the one that had been planned,

or the one that had become real.
