Chapter 7 — The Man Who Stole My Name

Chapter 7 — The Man Who Stole My Name

The footsteps stopped outside the vault.

Elena stood at the bottom of the staircase, staring into the darkness.

Victoria was beside her.

Her father remained several steps behind.

Julian stayed near the vault entrance, silent for once.

Then a man appeared.

He was old.

Older than Elena expected.

His white hair was damp with sweat, and one hand gripped a wooden cane. The other pressed against his chest.

Two security officers supported him.

“Henry Vale,” Thomas whispered.

The old man looked up.

His eyes found Elena.

“Isabella's daughter.”

Elena stepped forward.

“Yes.”

Henry studied her face.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he smiled sadly.

“You have her eyes.”

Elena's throat tightened.

“Tell me what happened to my grandmother.”

Henry's smile disappeared.

“I don't have much time.”

“Then don't waste it.”

The old man nodded.

“That sounds like Margaret.”

He looked toward Thomas.

“And you still haven't told her.”

Thomas lowered his head.

Henry shook his head.

“Coward.”

Elena stepped closer.

“Told me what?”

Henry took a breath.

“The man who destroyed your family didn't steal your fortune.”

He paused.

“He stole your name.”

Elena frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Henry looked directly at her.

“Your grandfather was never a Saint Clair.”

Silence.

No one moved.

Julian slowly raised his head.

Victoria's expression went blank.

Elena stared at Henry.

“That isn't possible.”

“It is.”

“My grandfather's name was Richard Saint Clair.”

“No.”

Henry's voice remained steady.

“Richard Vale.”

Elena felt the floor disappear beneath her.

“Vale?”

Henry nodded.

“Your grandfather was born Richard Vale.”

Julian went pale.

“Vale?”

Henry looked at him.

“Yes.”

Julian stepped forward.

“Are you saying we're related?”

Henry's expression became grim.

“That's the problem.”

For several seconds, Elena couldn't speak.

She looked at her father.

“Is this true?”

Thomas didn't answer.

“Dad.”

His eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.”

Elena stepped backward.

“You knew.”

“I learned the truth when I was seventeen.”

“And you said nothing.”

“I was afraid.”

“Everyone in this family was afraid.”

Her voice cracked.

“Everyone knew something except me.”

Isabella finally spoke.

“Because we wanted you to have one normal life.”

Elena turned toward her.

“Normal?”

She laughed bitterly.

“You were imprisoned for twenty-seven years.”

“You were lied to.”

“Victoria was erased.”

“And Julian stole my company.”

She looked around the room.

“This isn't normal.”

Isabella lowered her eyes.

“I know.”

Henry slowly sat on the stone steps.

“Your grandfather was born Richard Vale.”

Elena watched him.

“Who were the Vales?”

“Bankers.”

“Criminals?”

“Not originally.”

Henry sighed.

“They controlled debt.”

“What kind of debt?”

“Land.”

“Businesses.”

“Hotels.”

“Entire families.”

He looked at the emerald hanging from Elena's neck.

“Your grandmother discovered that Richard had been using Saint Clair property to secure loans without permission.”

“So she exposed him?”

“No.”

Henry shook his head.

“She married him.”

Elena stared.

“Why?”

“Because she believed she could change him.”

A bitter smile crossed his face.

“She was wrong.”

Henry continued.

“Richard didn't want Margaret's love.”

“He wanted her family name.”

Elena's heart sank.

“The Saint Clair name gave him legitimacy.”

“And access.”

“And eventually control.”

“He convinced Margaret to transfer several properties into a holding company.”

“What company?”

Henry looked at Thomas.

Thomas answered quietly.

“Saint Clair International.”

Elena frowned.

“That company was founded by Grandma.”

“No,” Henry said.

“It was founded by Richard.”

Elena's eyes widened.

“Then why was it called Saint Clair?”

Henry smiled sadly.

“Because Richard knew nobody would trust a Vale.”

Julian finally spoke.

“So everything we built…”

Henry looked at him.

“You built nothing.”

Julian stiffened.

“You were given access to assets that had existed for generations.”

“Your former wife expanded them.”

“Your board approved them.”

“But the foundation was already there.”

Julian looked at Elena.

She couldn't look at him.

Henry continued.

“Richard eventually discovered something even more valuable.”

“The trust.”

Elena touched the emerald.

“Grandma's trust?”

“Yes.”

“Why was it created?”

“To protect the family from him.”

Henry's voice became quieter.

“Margaret knew Richard would eventually try to take everything.”

“So she created the trust in secret.”

“But Richard found out.”

“And that's when the killing started.”

Elena swallowed.

“My grandmother.”

Henry nodded.

“She was the first.”

“Then my mother?”

“The second.”

Elena's eyes widened.

“My mother wasn't killed.”

“No.”

“She was hidden.”

“Because Richard believed she knew where the original trust documents were.”

Elena looked at Isabella.

“You knew where they were?”

Isabella shook her head.

“Your grandmother never told me.”

Henry corrected her.

“She did.”

Isabella froze.

Henry looked at her.

“You were supposed to protect Elena.”

“I did.”

“You were supposed to protect the original trust.”

“I tried.”

“And you failed.”

Isabella's face crumbled.

“Because I trusted the wrong man.”

Elena looked between them.

“Who?”

Henry's eyes shifted toward Thomas.

Elena followed his gaze.

Her father looked devastated.

“No.”

Henry nodded.

“Yes.”

Elena's voice became barely audible.

“My father?”

Thomas whispered:

“I didn't know.”

Henry laughed bitterly.

“You knew enough.”

The truth came out slowly.

Thomas had not been the mastermind.

But he had been involved.

At seventeen, he had discovered documents proving Richard was using the Saint Clair name to hide his own criminal network.

Thomas confronted him.

Richard threatened to destroy Isabella.

Then he threatened Elena.

She hadn't even been born yet.

Thomas was terrified.

So he agreed to help Richard alter the trust.

He signed documents.

Moved assets.

Destroyed records.

And helped create the identity everyone knew.

Richard Saint Clair.

The name belonged to Margaret.

The empire belonged to Margaret.

But the man who stood at the center of it had been a Vale.

Elena stared at her father.

“You helped him steal Grandma's name.”

Thomas began crying.

“I thought I was saving your mother.”

“You helped him.”

“Yes.”

“You lied to me.”

“Yes.”

“You watched me grow up believing a false history.”

“Yes.”

Elena shook her head.

“I don't know you.”

Thomas looked at her.

“I know.”

Then Henry reached inside his coat.

He pulled out an envelope.

The paper was old.

The seal was green.

He handed it to Elena.

“Your grandmother gave this to me the night she disappeared.”

Elena stared at the handwriting.

She recognized it immediately.

She opened the envelope.

Inside was a single page.

Henry,

If Richard ever succeeds in taking the Saint Clair name, there is only one person who can restore it.

Elena's breath caught.

She continued.

My granddaughter.

She must never know the truth until she is strong enough to survive it.

Elena's eyes filled with tears.

Then she read the final paragraph.

When she learns who Richard truly was, tell her this:

A name is not inherited.

It is earned.

Elena folded the letter.

Henry watched her.

“There is more.”

“Where?”

“In the second trust.”

Elena frowned.

“I thought there was only one.”

“There is the trust your grandfather knew about.”

“And the one he never found.”

Victoria stepped forward.

“Where is it?”

Henry looked at her.

“Inside Elena's name.”

Elena stared.

“What does that mean?”

Henry pointed to the emerald.

“The emerald isn't merely a key.”

He paused.

“It's a seal.”

A sound came from the corridor.

Security immediately raised their weapons.

Someone was running.

A guard shouted:

“Stop!”

A gunshot exploded.

The bullet struck the stone wall.

Elena ducked.

Victoria grabbed her arm.

“Get down.”

Another shot.

Then silence.

The guards disappeared into the darkness.

Julian moved toward Elena.

“Stay behind me.”

She looked at him.

“Don't.”

He stopped.

“I don't need you protecting me.”

“I know.”

“Then stop pretending.”

Julian lowered his weapon.

“I deserve that.”

Before Elena could answer, one of the guards returned.

“Ms. Saint Clair!”

“What happened?”

“We found the attacker.”

“Who?”

The guard looked toward Thomas.

His face was pale.

“It was one of your father's security men.”

Thomas froze.

“What?”

“He had orders.”

“From whom?”

The guard hesitated.

Then handed Elena a phone.

“There was a message.”

She looked at the screen.

One sentence.

KEEP HENRY VALE SILENT.

Elena looked at Henry.

Then at her father.

“Who sent it?”

Thomas shook his head.

“I don't know.”

Henry laughed weakly.

“I do.”

Everyone turned.

Henry's breathing had become shallow.

He pointed toward the phone.

“That message wasn't sent by your grandfather.”

“Then who?”

“The person who took over after him.”

Elena's blood went cold.

“Who?”

Henry's eyes moved toward the hallway.

“The man who inherited Richard Vale's network.”

Julian whispered:

“Who?”

Henry looked directly at him.

“You.”

Julian's face went white.

“No.”

Henry nodded.

“Your father.”

Silence.

Julian took a step backward.

“My father died before I took over.”

“He died publicly.”

Henry's voice weakened.

“Privately, he disappeared.”

Elena looked at Julian.

“Your father is alive?”

Julian couldn't answer.

Henry continued:

“He has been operating through shell companies for twenty years.”

“Using the Saint Clair empire.”

“Using the Vale network.”

“And using you.”

Julian's breathing became uneven.

“My father…”

Henry looked at Elena.

“Your husband didn't steal your empire alone.”

Elena's stomach turned.

“Who helped him?”

Henry whispered:

“His father.”

Julian sat down.

He looked destroyed.

“My father told me the Saint Clairs were finished.”

Henry shook his head.

“He wanted you to believe that.”

“Why?”

“Because he needed someone inside.”

Elena's expression hardened.

“Inside what?”

Henry looked at her.

“Your marriage.”

Julian stared at Elena.

The room seemed to shrink.

“What are you saying?”

Henry answered:

“Julian didn't meet Elena by accident.”

Elena froze.

Julian shook his head.

“No.”

Henry continued.

“His father selected him.”

“Years before the wedding.”

“To marry you.”

Elena felt something inside her break.

Julian looked at her.

“Elena…”

“Don't.”

“I didn't know.”

“You knew enough.”

“I loved you.”

“You were sent to me.”

“I didn't know why.”

“But you stayed.”

“Yes.”

“You took my work.”

“No.”

“You took my company.”

“I thought it was mine.”

“You threw me out of my own resort.”

Julian's eyes filled with tears.

“I know.”

“And all this time…”

Elena's voice trembled.

“You were planted inside my family.”

Julian whispered:

“I didn't know.”

Henry closed his eyes.

“That's why your grandfather hated the Vales.”

Elena looked at him.

“Because he knew they would come back.”

Henry nodded.

“And they did.”

At 2:31 a.m., another message arrived.

This time on Elena's phone.

Unknown number.

YOU FOUND THE NAME.

She stared.

A second message appeared.

NOW FIND THE MAN.

Then a photograph.

An older man standing outside a private estate.

Elena recognized the face.

Julian did too.

He stood abruptly.

“That's my father.”

Victoria moved closer.

“Where?”

The message supplied an address.

Elena looked at it.

Then at Julian.

“What do you want to do?”

Julian stared at the photograph.

For the first time, the hatred between them disappeared.

What remained was fear.

“My father has been controlling my life since I was a child.”

Elena nodded.

“And now?”

Julian looked at her.

“Now I want the truth.”

She studied him.

“You may not like it.”

“I know.”

“You may lose everything.”

He nodded.

“I already have.”

Elena turned toward Victoria.

“We go together.”

Victoria nodded.

Thomas stepped forward.

“I'll come.”

Elena stopped him.

“No.”

“Please.”

“You lied to me for twenty-seven years.”

“I can help.”

“You've had twenty-seven years to help.”

He lowered his head.

Elena looked at her mother.

“Stay here.”

Isabella nodded.

Henry reached for Elena's hand.

His fingers were cold.

“Be careful.”

She looked down.

“What?”

Henry whispered:

“Your grandmother wasn't killed because she knew the truth.”

Elena frowned.

“Then why?”

“Because she was about to expose it.”

He squeezed her hand.

“And the person who stopped her…”

His voice faded.

Elena leaned closer.

“Who?”

Henry opened his eyes one last time.

“Your father.”

Thomas staggered backward.

Elena turned toward him.

“Dad?”

Thomas looked at her.

His face was filled with horror.

“No.”

Henry's eyes closed.

“No…”

His head fell against the wall.

Elena froze.

“Henry?”

No response.

“Henry!”

The guards rushed forward.

But it was too late.

The man who had carried the family's darkest secret for twenty-seven years was dead.

And in his hand was one final object.

A small brass key.

Engraved with two letters.

E.V.

Elena stared at it.

Victoria's face changed.

“What?”

Victoria whispered:

“E.V.”

“What does it mean?”

Victoria looked at Elena.

“Your grandmother's maiden initials.”

Elena's fingers closed around the key.

Then her phone vibrated again.

One final message.

THE MAN WHO STOLE YOUR NAME IS WAITING FOR YOU.

She looked at the photograph of Julian's father.

Then at the key.

Then at her own family.

For nine years, Elena had believed her greatest mistake had been marrying Julian.

She was wrong.

The greatest lie had begun before she was born.

And the man who stole her family's name had not only stolen an empire.

He had built an entire life around the lie.

Now Elena knew where to find him.

The old Vale estate.

Before sunrise, she would go there.

And when she arrived, she would finally learn why her grandfather had spent his entire life pretending to be a Saint Clair.

Because the answer was hidden in one place even Victoria had never searched.

May you like

Inside the house where Elena had been born.

And waiting there was the man who had been watching her since the day she came into the world.
