Chapter 14 — The Man Who Lost Everything Before Sunrise

Chapter 14 — The Man Who Lost Everything Before Sunrise

By sunrise, Julian Vale had lost everything.

Not metaphorically.

Not emotionally.

Legally.

Financially.

Publicly.

The man who had once owned the most photographed resort empire on the coast now stood inside a nearly empty hotel lobby with one suitcase, a dead corporate phone, and a wedding ring he had already removed.

For nine years, Julian had believed losing everything meant losing money.

He finally understood how wrong he had been.

Money could be rebuilt.

A reputation could sometimes be repaired.

Companies could be purchased again.

But the people he had betrayed would not necessarily come back.

And Elena—

the only person he had ever truly wanted—

was walking away from him.

He watched her disappear through the glass doors.

He didn't follow.

For once, Julian understood that loving someone sometimes meant having the courage to let them leave.

Then his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

VICTORIA.

He answered.

“What?”

Her voice was trembling with rage.

“What did you do?”

Julian looked toward the ocean.

“What Elena and I needed to do.”

“You destroyed the reserve.”

“Yes.”

“You destroyed your father's fortune.”

“Yes.”

“You destroyed your own inheritance.”

“Yes.”

Victoria laughed bitterly.

“You think you've won?”

Julian said nothing.

“You've lost everything.”

He closed his eyes.

“No.”

His voice was quiet.

“I lost what you taught me to value.”

A pause.

“What does that mean?”

“It means I'm finally free.”

Victoria's voice became cold.

“You'll regret this.”

“Maybe.”

“You'll come crawling back.”

“No.”

“You'll have nothing.”

Julian looked at the empty lobby.

For the first time, that didn't frighten him.

“I have my life.”

Then he ended the call.

Across the city, Elena sat inside a black car.

She hadn't spoken for twenty minutes.

Her father sat beside her.

Margaret was in the front passenger seat.

The photograph of Claire rested in Elena's hands.

She couldn't stop looking at the child.

“Dad.”

“Yes?”

“Who is Claire?”

Her father didn't answer.

“Dad.”

He sighed.

“Your mother's first daughter.”

Elena stared at him.

“First daughter?”

“Yes.”

“She had another child?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't I know?”

“Because Claire was believed to have died.”

“Believed?”

Her father looked out the window.

“We never found her body.”

Elena's stomach tightened.

“So she could be alive.”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“I don't know.”

Margaret turned around.

“I do.”

Elena looked at her.

“Where?”

Margaret's expression was grim.

“Somewhere Victoria could never reach her.”

“Where?”

Margaret hesitated.

“Switzerland.”

Elena's heart raced.

“Then we're going.”

Her father shook his head.

“No.”

Elena turned toward him.

“You don't get to tell me no anymore.”

“I know.”

“Then tell me why.”

“Because Claire isn't what you think.”

“What does that mean?”

Margaret answered.

“Claire was raised to hate the Saint Clair family.”

Elena went silent.

“Why?”

“Because she was told you stole everything from her.”

“That isn't true.”

“No.”

Margaret looked at her.

“But someone made sure Claire believed it.”

“Who?”

“Victoria.”

The car stopped outside the old Saint Clair residence.

The house had been empty for years.

Its windows were covered.

Its gardens had grown wild.

Elena stepped inside.

The air smelled of dust and old wood.

Her childhood photographs still hung along the hallway.

She walked slowly.

Every frame contained a version of herself.

A little girl.

A teenager.

A bride.

A woman.

None of them knew the truth.

None of them knew that their lives were being controlled by decisions made before they were born.

Margaret led her downstairs.

“There is something you need to see.”

They entered the basement.

A wall stood at the far end.

Margaret pressed three stones.

A hidden door opened.

Elena stared.

Inside was a small archive.

Documents lined the shelves.

Photographs.

Letters.

Medical files.

Birth records.

She saw her mother's name.

ISABELLA SAINT CLAIR.

She pulled out the file.

Inside was a photograph.

Isabella holding a newborn baby.

A little girl.

Claire.

Elena's hands trembled.

Beneath the photograph was a note.

Claire Saint Clair — legally transferred to protective custody.

Elena looked up.

“Protective custody?”

Margaret nodded.

“Your mother believed someone was trying to kill her.”

“Who?”

“Victoria.”

Again that name.

Always Victoria.

Elena opened another file.

There were financial records.

Transfers.

Payments.

A list of names.

And one name appeared repeatedly.

Claire Saint Clair.

“She received money.”

“Yes.”

“From Victoria?”

“No.”

Margaret pointed to the account.

“From your father.”

Elena stared.

“Dad?”

“He secretly supported Claire for twenty years.”

“Why didn't he tell me?”

“Because Claire's existence was the only leverage he had against Victoria.”

Elena frowned.

“How?”

“Victoria wanted the Vale fortune.”

“And Claire?”

“She wanted something else.”

“What?”

Margaret's eyes hardened.

“Revenge.”

A noise came from upstairs.

Everyone froze.

Margaret whispered:

“Someone's here.”

Elena reached for her phone.

Her father pulled out his weapon.

“Stay behind me.”

Footsteps echoed through the hallway.

Slow.

Deliberate.

Then the basement door opened.

Julian appeared.

Elena stared.

“What are you doing here?”

“I followed you.”

Her father immediately raised his weapon.

Julian stopped.

“I came alone.”

Elena looked at him.

“Why?”

He held up a folder.

“Because I found something.”

“What?”

“The account Claire used.”

Elena's heart tightened.

“Where?”

Julian placed the folder on the table.

“London.”

“She's there?”

“No.”

He pointed to a transfer.

“The account was active yesterday.”

Elena frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Julian looked at her.

“It means Claire isn't waiting for us.”

“Then where is she?”

Julian's expression changed.

“She came here.”

Elena went still.

“What?”

“She was inside this house last night.”

Margaret looked around.

“How do you know?”

“Security footage.”

“Show me.”

Julian opened his phone.

The video showed a woman entering the house.

Dark coat.

Silver suitcase.

Her face was hidden.

But Elena recognized the way she walked.

She had seen that walk before.

In the photograph.

In her mother's old journals.

Elena whispered:

“Claire.”

The video continued.

The woman entered the basement.

She opened the hidden archive.

Then she turned toward the camera.

For one second, her face became visible.

Elena stopped breathing.

Claire looked almost exactly like her.

Same eyes.

Same mouth.

Same expression.

But there was something colder in her gaze.

Then the video ended.

A message appeared.

I KNOW YOU FOUND ME.

Elena stared.

Another message followed.

NOW YOU NEED TO FIND OUT WHY I LEFT.

The next morning, the media exploded.

Every major financial channel reported that Julian Vale had lost control of the resort empire.

Reporters surrounded every resort.

Investors panicked.

Employees demanded answers.

Competitors began buying distressed assets.

But Elena did something nobody expected.

She held a press conference.

She stood behind a simple podium.

No jewelry.

No expensive dress.

No family crest.

Just Elena.

A reporter raised his hand.

“Ms. Saint Clair, did you destroy billions of dollars?”

“Yes.”

The room erupted.

“Why?”

“Because the money had become more important than the people.”

Another reporter shouted:

“Are you responsible for Julian Vale's financial collapse?”

Elena paused.

“Yes.”

“Do you regret it?”

She looked directly into the cameras.

“No.”

A third reporter asked:

“Are you divorcing him?”

“Yes.”

“Do you still love him?”

Silence.

Elena looked down.

Then back at the cameras.

“That question belongs to my private life.”

The reporter pushed.

“But do you?”

Elena's expression softened.

“Yes.”

The room went silent.

“But love isn't permission to hurt someone.”

That sentence became the headline within minutes.

Julian watched the press conference alone.

He smiled.

Not because he was happy.

Because he finally understood Elena.

She wasn't destroying him.

She was refusing to become him.

His assistant called.

“Mr. Vale.”

“I'm no longer Mr. Vale.”

A pause.

“What should I call you?”

Julian looked through the window.

“Julian.”

“Julian, there is something you need to know.”

“What?”

“Your father has been arrested.”

Julian froze.

“For what?”

“Fraud. Extortion. Financial crimes.”

“Who filed the complaint?”

“Elena.”

Julian closed his eyes.

“Good.”

His assistant sounded surprised.

“You aren't angry?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because it's time.”

Victoria was arrested three hours later.

She tried to flee the country.

She never made it past the private terminal.

When officers approached, she screamed.

“You don't understand who I am!”

One officer looked at the warrant.

“I understand exactly who you are.”

She was handcuffed.

The cameras captured everything.

The woman who had spent twenty years controlling people through fear was suddenly standing beneath fluorescent lights with her wrists bound.

No family.

No empire.

No influence.

Only consequences.

That evening, Elena received a call.

It was from Claire.

She answered.

“Hello?”

A woman's voice said:

“You finally destroyed the reserve.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because it was poisoning everyone.”

Claire was silent.

Then:

“You really are Isabella's daughter.”

Elena's throat tightened.

“You're my sister.”

“I know.”

“Why didn't you come home?”

“Because I didn't have one.”

“You could have called.”

“I was afraid.”

“Of me?”

“No.”

Claire's voice cracked.

“Of what I would become if I came back.”

Elena closed her eyes.

“Where are you?”

“Not far.”

“Tell me.”

“I need to know one thing first.”

“What?”

“Did you really destroy the fortune?”

“Yes.”

“All of it?”

“Yes.”

Claire exhaled.

“Then maybe I can trust you.”

Elena's heart raced.

“Claire…”

“I'll see you tomorrow.”

The line ended.

Elena lowered the phone.

For the first time, she felt something she hadn't felt in days.

Hope.

Then another message arrived.

From an unknown number.

A photograph.

A man standing beside Claire.

Elena recognized him.

Alexander.

Her biological father.

But the photograph had been taken that morning.

And Alexander was holding a newborn baby.

Beneath the photograph was a message.

THERE IS ONE MORE SAINT CLAIR HEIR.

Elena's blood ran cold.

Another message appeared.

AND THIS ONE IS IN DANGER.

That night, Julian stood alone outside the resort.

He no longer had the penthouse.

No executive office.

No private jet.

No security team.

No empire.

But when Elena approached, he looked peaceful.

“You came.”

“I did.”

She stood beside him.

“I wanted to tell you something.”

“What?”

“The divorce will be finalized soon.”

He nodded.

“I know.”

“I don't want anything from you.”

“You already have everything.”

She looked at him.

“No.”

He smiled faintly.

“You have the courage I didn't have.”

Silence.

Then Elena asked:

“Where will you go?”

“I don't know.”

“You could stay.”

Julian looked surprised.

“Why?”

“Because losing everything doesn't mean you have to lose your life.”

He studied her face.

“Is there a chance for us?”

Elena didn't answer immediately.

“Not now.”

“I understand.”

“Maybe not ever.”

He nodded.

“I understand.”

“But…”

She looked at him.

“I don't want you to disappear.”

His eyes filled with emotion.

“I won't.”

They stood quietly beneath the morning sky.

Then Elena's phone rang.

She answered.

“Hello?”

A man's voice spoke.

“Ms. Saint Clair?”

“Yes.”

“This is the hospital.”

Her heart stopped.

“What hospital?”

“Saint Claire Children's Hospital.”

“What happened?”

“We found a baby.”

Elena's stomach tightened.

“What baby?”

“There was a note attached.”

“What did it say?”

The nurse's voice trembled.

“It says the child belongs to Isabella Saint Clair.”

Elena couldn't breathe.

Julian looked at her.

“What is it?”

She whispered:

“Another heir.”

Then the nurse added:

“And there's one more problem.”

“What?”

“The person who left the baby…”

A pause.

“…asked us to call you before they came back.”

Elena's blood turned cold.

“Who?”

The nurse answered:

“Your mother.”

Elena dropped the phone.

Julian caught her arm.

“What happened?”

She looked at him.

“My mother is alive.”

The sun was rising over the ocean.

Julian had lost everything before sunrise.

But Elena had just discovered that losing the empire had been the easy part.

Finding the family that had been hidden from her for thirty years would be much harder.

And somewhere in the city, a woman who was supposed to be dead was walking toward a hospital.

May you like

Carrying another secret.

And this time, there would be no trust left to destroy.
