Chapter 8 — The Account He Couldn’t Touch

Chapter 8 — The Account He Couldn’t Touch
The old Vale estate stood beyond the northern hills, hidden behind a forest so dense that even daylight struggled to reach the stone walls.
Elena had driven past the property once as a child.
She had never been allowed to stop.
Her father had always called it an abandoned family residence.
A place with no importance.
A place that belonged to a dead branch of the family.
Now she understood why he had been so determined to keep her away.
Because the house wasn't abandoned.
It was waiting.
The gates opened before Elena's car reached them.
Victoria noticed first.
“They knew we were coming.”
Elena tightened her grip on the steering wheel.
“Who?”
Victoria looked toward the cameras mounted along the stone wall.
“Someone has been watching this property.”
Julian sat in the back seat.
He had barely spoken since they left the hotel.
His father's photograph was still open on his phone.
Elena glanced at him through the mirror.
“You okay?”
He laughed softly.
“No.”
“At least you're honest.”
“I've spent my whole life believing my father was dead.”
“And now?”
“Now I know he's alive.”
“And he used you.”
Julian looked down.
“Yes.”
Elena faced the road.
“Then we have something in common.”
The front door opened by itself.
No guard appeared.
No servant.
No security team.
Just an empty hallway.
Elena stepped inside.
The house smelled of dust, old wood, and something faintly metallic.
Victoria entered behind her.
Julian followed.
The door closed.
Locked.
He tried the handle.
Nothing.
“Great,” he muttered.
Elena looked around.
Portraits covered the walls.
The oldest showed a young man Elena recognized immediately.
Richard Vale.
Her grandfather.
But the name beneath the portrait wasn't Richard Saint Clair.
It read:
RICHARD ELIAS VALE
Elena stared.
“Elias.”
Victoria nodded.
“The middle name.”
Elena looked closer.
There was something strange about the portrait.
Richard's right hand rested on the arm of a chair.
On his finger was a ring.
A green stone.
Exactly like the emerald.
Elena touched the pendant around her neck.
“He had one too.”
Victoria frowned.
“No.”
“What?”
“That's not an emerald.”
Elena looked at the portrait.
“What is it?”
“A signet.”
Victoria moved closer.
“The Vale family seal.”
A sound came from upstairs.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Deliberate.
Julian immediately reached for his weapon.
Elena raised her hand.
“Wait.”
A man appeared at the top of the staircase.
He was old.
Tall.
Thin.
His hair was silver.
His face looked tired.
But his eyes were unmistakable.
Julian froze.
“Dad?”
The man looked down.
“Julian.”
Julian's weapon lowered.
“You're alive.”
His father smiled.
“Unfortunately for some people.”
Julian took one step forward.
“Why?”
“Why what?”
“Why did you disappear?”
His father walked down the stairs.
“Because your grandfather wanted me dead.”
“Why?”
“Because I knew what he had done.”
Elena stepped forward.
“You mean what Richard Vale did.”
The man looked at her.
His expression changed.
“You're Elena.”
“Yes.”
He smiled.
“Margaret would have been proud.”
Elena's eyes hardened.
“Don't talk about my grandmother.”
“She trusted me.”
“You betrayed her.”
“No.”
He shook his head.
“She betrayed herself.”
Julian stared at his father.
“What does that mean?”
The older man sighed.
“Your grandfather built the empire.”
“Your grandmother tried to take it away.”
“And everyone in between chose a side.”
Elena said:
“I don't care about the empire.”
The man laughed.
“That's exactly why you're dangerous.”
He introduced himself as Alexander Vale.
Julian's father.
Richard's son.
And, according to the records Henry had uncovered, the man who had secretly controlled dozens of corporations connected to the Saint Clair resorts.
Elena watched him carefully.
“Where is the account?”
Alexander frowned.
“What account?”
“The one Henry mentioned.”
Alexander's expression changed.
Victoria noticed.
“You know exactly what she's talking about.”
Alexander sighed.
“You've found the emerald.”
“Yes.”
“And the vault.”
“Yes.”
“Then you already have what you need.”
“No.”
Elena stepped closer.
“There's another account.”
Alexander looked at her.
“The account your grandfather couldn't touch.”
Silence.
Julian looked between them.
“What account?”
Elena answered.
“An account containing the assets Richard couldn't legally control.”
Alexander smiled.
“Very good.”
“How much?”
He didn't answer.
“How much, Alexander?”
He finally said:
“Eleven billion dollars.”
Julian stared.
Elena's face remained still.
“Where?”
Alexander smiled.
“That's the question.”
He walked toward the library.
The room was enormous.
Thousands of books.
A fireplace.
A desk.
A massive globe.
Alexander stopped beside an old grandfather clock.
“Your grandmother created the account.”
Elena frowned.
“Grandma?”
“Yes.”
“She created it before Richard stole the Saint Clair name.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“To protect the women of the family.”
Elena looked at Victoria.
“That's what the letter said.”
Alexander nodded.
“Margaret knew Richard would eventually attempt to control the trust.”
“So she created something outside the trust.”
“Exactly.”
“An account he couldn't touch.”
Alexander tapped the clock.
“Not just an account.”
“A private financial network.”
“Property.”
“Stocks.”
“Bonds.”
“Gold.”
“Foreign currency.”
“And controlling interests in companies.”
Elena stared.
“Eleven billion.”
“Approximately.”
“And who owns it?”
Alexander smiled.
“You.”
Julian stepped forward.
“What?”
Alexander looked at him.
“The account was created for Elena.”
“Why?”
“Because Margaret knew Richard would never trust a woman with power.”
“So she used Elena.”
“She protected Elena.”
Julian looked at his father.
“Then why did you marry her?”
Alexander's expression became cold.
“I didn't choose your marriage.”
“You told me to get close to her.”
“I told you to understand her.”
“You told me she was the key.”
“She was.”
Elena interrupted.
“You knew about the account.”
“Yes.”
“And you still sent your son to marry me.”
Alexander nodded.
“Because I needed access.”
Julian looked stunned.
“You used me.”
“Yes.”
“You used my marriage.”
“Yes.”
“You destroyed Elena's life.”
Alexander's eyes remained cold.
“I destroyed nothing.”
He looked at Elena.
“Your family destroyed itself.”
Elena walked to the desk.
“What happens if I access the account?”
Alexander's expression changed.
“You don't.”
“Why?”
“Because once you do, every hidden company linked to the account becomes yours.”
“And?”
“You'll become the largest private shareholder in several industries.”
Elena stared.
“I don't want that.”
Alexander smiled.
“You don't understand.”
He opened a drawer.
Inside was a folder.
“Your grandfather didn't just hide money.”
He handed it to her.
“He hid leverage.”
Elena opened the folder.
Inside were contracts.
Government agreements.
Banking arrangements.
Property rights.
Energy holdings.
Shipping companies.
Insurance groups.
Telecommunications assets.
She stared.
“This isn't an inheritance.”
“No.”
“It's control.”
“Yes.”
Victoria looked over Elena's shoulder.
“If she activates it…”
Alexander nodded.
“She can dismantle the Saint Clair empire.”
Elena closed the folder.
“Or rebuild it.”
Alexander smiled.
“Now you understand.”
At 3:17 a.m., the house alarm sounded.
Alexander's expression changed.
“They're here.”
Julian reached for his weapon.
“Who?”
Alexander looked toward the windows.
“The people who have been trying to kill me for twenty years.”
Elena frowned.
“The Morettis?”
“No.”
“Then who?”
Alexander looked directly at her.
“Your grandfather's remaining partners.”
The lights went out.
Gunfire erupted outside.
Glass shattered.
Victoria pulled Elena behind the desk.
Julian fired toward the hallway.
Alexander opened a hidden panel in the wall.
“Move.”
Elena followed him.
A narrow tunnel opened beneath the library.
They ran.
Behind them, armed men entered the house.
Someone shouted:
“Find Elena!”
Another voice answered:
“She's in the tunnel!”
Elena looked at Alexander.
“How do they know?”
“Because someone told them.”
“Who?”
He didn't answer.
Julian stopped.
“Wait.”
“What?”
He pointed behind them.
One of the attackers was wearing a Saint Clair security uniform.
Elena's blood went cold.
“They've infiltrated the company.”
Alexander nodded.
“They've been inside for years.”
The tunnel ended beneath an abandoned bank.
Alexander opened a steel door.
Inside was a small control room.
Four monitors.
Two computers.
A biometric scanner.
And one black terminal.
Elena stared.
“What is this?”
“The account.”
Victoria stepped forward.
“Finally.”
Alexander shook his head.
“There's one problem.”
“What?”
“The account requires two signatures.”
Elena frowned.
“Mine and whose?”
Alexander looked at her.
“Your mother's.”
Elena froze.
“Mom is at the hotel.”
“No.”
Alexander shook his head.
“She left.”
“What?”
“She knew they'd come.”
Elena immediately called her.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
Her heart raced.
“Where is she?”
Alexander's expression was grim.
“She went to the original Saint Clair house.”
“Why?”
“To retrieve the second key.”
Elena's stomach dropped.
“There's another key?”
“Yes.”
“What does it open?”
Alexander looked at the terminal.
“The account.”
Elena stared at the screen.
A message appeared.
PRIMARY BENEFICIARY IDENTIFIED.
Her name appeared.
ELENA MARGARET SAINT CLAIR
Then:
SECOND BENEFICIARY REQUIRED.
ISABELLA MARGARET SAINT CLAIR
Victoria whispered:
“She has to be alive.”
“She is,” Elena said.
“Then we get her.”
Alexander shook his head.
“You don't have time.”
“Why?”
He pointed to the clock.
“Someone has already accessed the emergency override.”
Elena's face went pale.
“How long?”
“Four minutes.”
“Until what?”
“The account becomes frozen.”
“And then?”
Alexander looked at her.
“Everything inside it becomes inaccessible for ten years.”
Elena stared.
“Who initiated it?”
Alexander didn't answer.
Julian did.
“My father.”
Everyone turned.
Julian looked at the screen.
“He knew about the account.”
Alexander nodded.
“He always did.”
Julian's face hardened.
“Then he's trying to lock Elena out.”
“Yes.”
Julian looked at Elena.
“Give me the terminal.”
She frowned.
“Why?”
“I can stop him.”
“You don't know how.”
“My father taught me.”
Alexander stepped forward.
“Julian.”
His father looked at him.
“You have ten seconds.”
Julian sat.
His fingers moved across the keyboard.
Password.
Rejected.
Second attempt.
Rejected.
Third.
Access denied.
Julian closed his eyes.
Then he whispered:
“Dad used to say every system has a weakness.”
He typed one final command.
The screen flashed.
EMERGENCY OVERRIDE DENIED.
Julian smiled.
“I found it.”
Alexander stared.
“You used your mother's birthday.”
Julian nodded.
“My father always used sentimental passwords.”
The system unlocked.
Elena looked at the screen.
SECONDARY AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED.
A camera activated.
Her mother's face appeared.
Isabella.
She was standing somewhere dark.
Blood was visible near her temple.
Elena stood abruptly.
“Mom!”
Isabella looked directly into the camera.
“Elena.”
“What happened?”
“Don't trust Alexander.”
The room went silent.
Alexander's face changed.
Isabella continued.
“He isn't telling you everything.”
Elena stared at Alexander.
“What does she mean?”
Isabella's voice shook.
“The account isn't just money.”
“What is it?”
“Evidence.”
“Evidence of what?”
“Everything.”
“Everything what?”
Isabella looked toward the camera.
“Every crime your grandfather committed.”
Then she whispered:
“And every crime your father helped him commit.”
Thomas.
Elena's stomach twisted.
“Mom, where are you?”
The screen flickered.
Isabella looked frightened.
“I'm at the old house.”
“Who has you?”
She hesitated.
Then:
“Your father.”
Elena froze.
“Dad?”
The screen went black.
No one spoke.
Alexander stared at the dead monitor.
Elena turned toward him.
“You knew.”
“No.”
“You knew she was going there.”
“Yes.”
“You knew my father was there.”
“No.”
“You're lying.”
Alexander's expression hardened.
“I didn't know.”
Elena walked toward him.
“Then why did you tell me she needed the second key?”
“Because she does.”
“You sent her there.”
“No.”
“Then who did?”
Alexander looked at Julian.
“Your husband.”
Julian froze.
“What?”
Alexander pointed toward the terminal.
“He unlocked the account.”
“I didn't send Isabella anywhere.”
“You didn't.”
Alexander smiled coldly.
“But someone used your access code to track her.”
Julian stared.
“Who?”
Alexander answered:
“Your father.”
Elena's phone vibrated.
A message appeared.
YOUR MOTHER IS ALIVE. FOR NOW.
Then:
BRING THE EMERALD.
Another message.
COME ALONE.
Elena looked at the emerald around her neck.
Then at Julian.
Then at Victoria.
“No.”
Victoria shook her head.
“You're not going.”
Elena's expression hardened.
“They have Mom.”
Alexander stepped forward.
“And that's exactly what they want.”
Elena looked at him.
“What do you suggest?”
Alexander pointed to the terminal.
“Activate the account.”
“But we need Mom.”
“No.”
He shook his head.
“We need her signature.”
“And she's being held.”
“Exactly.”
Elena stared.
Alexander continued.
“If you activate the account without her, the system will trigger a recovery protocol.”
“What happens?”
“The location of every hidden asset will be exposed.”
“And?”
“More importantly…”
He paused.
“The location of whoever is holding your mother will be exposed too.”
Elena looked at the screen.
For years, her family had hidden behind names.
Trusts.
Companies.
Secrets.
Tonight, someone had finally made a mistake.
They had taken her mother.
They had demanded the emerald.
They had tried to freeze the account.
And they had forgotten one thing.
The account was never designed to protect the money.
It was designed to protect Elena.
She placed the emerald against the biometric scanner.
The machine came alive.
IDENTITY CONFIRMED.
Elena looked at Victoria.
“Ready?”
Victoria nodded.
Julian stepped beside her.
“I'll help.”
Elena looked at him.
“You don't have to.”
“I know.”
He swallowed.
“But this time, I'm not helping my father.”
He looked directly at her.
“I'm helping you.”
Elena turned back to the terminal.
She pressed her hand against the scanner.
The system displayed one final warning.
ACTIVATION WILL EXPOSE ALL HIDDEN BENEFICIARIES.
She pressed CONFIRM.
The screen went black.
Then one name appeared.
Not Elena.
Not Isabella.
Not Victoria.
A name none of them expected.
PRIMARY HIDDEN BENEFICIARY: JULIAN ALEXANDER VALE.
Elena stared.
Julian stopped breathing.
His father's account had not been trying to steal the inheritance.
It had been trying to hide something far worse.
Julian wasn't merely the son of the man who betrayed the Saint Clairs.
He was part of the original trust.
And according to the account, his bloodline had been connected to Elena's family long before either of them was born.
A second message appeared.
THE MARRIAGE WAS NOT THE BEGINNING.
Then:
IT WAS THE END OF A DEAL MADE THIRTY YEARS AGO.
Elena's blood ran cold.
The final line appeared.
YOUR MOTHER KNOWS WHY.
And somewhere across the city, Isabella screamed.
The screen went dark.
The account was open.
The truth was no longer buried.
May you like
And Elena finally understood that the fortune she had inherited wasn't merely a weapon against Julian.
It was the key to discovering why her entire marriage had been planned before she ever met him.
