Chapter 1 – The Woman at the Door

Chapter 1 – The Woman at the Door
Vanessa's hand sliced through the air.
The slap landed hard across Emma's cheek, snapping her head to the side. A sharp sting spread across her face, followed by the metallic taste of blood where her teeth had cut into the inside of her mouth.
Emma stumbled backward, one hand instinctively shielding her swollen stomach.
The babies.
Her heart pounded with only one thought.
Please don't let anything happen to my babies.
Vanessa stood motionless for a second, breathing heavily as though she couldn't believe she had actually done it. But the hesitation lasted only a heartbeat. Desperation quickly buried whatever guilt might have remained.
"I warned you," she said coldly.
Emma looked up, disbelief filling her tearful eyes.
"I've treated you like my own sister."
"You treated me like someone who always needed saving."
"I never—"
"Enough."
Vanessa grabbed the leather folder from the coffee table and threw it toward Emma.
The papers scattered across the hardwood floor like oversized snowflakes.
"Sign them."
Emma slowly shook her head.
"I won't."
Another contraction tore through her body.
This one was stronger.
Much stronger.
She gasped, clutching the edge of the sofa as pain radiated across her abdomen and into her lower back.
Vanessa noticed.
Her eyes narrowed.
"Stop pretending."
Emma could barely breathe.
"I'm... not pretending."
"You think being pregnant gives you permission to manipulate everyone."
Emma stared at her.
"I am in labor."
"No, you're trying to make me feel sorry for you."
Emma's knees buckled.
She sank onto the rug, both hands wrapped protectively around her belly.
Another painful tightening stole her breath.
The twins kicked violently.
Tears blurred her vision.
"Please..." she whispered.
"I need a hospital."
Vanessa folded her arms.
"You'll go after you sign."
Emma looked at her as though she were looking at a stranger.
"You'd risk your own nieces or nephews?"
Vanessa's expression didn't change.
"They'll survive."
Emma felt ice settle inside her chest.
No.
This wasn't panic speaking.
Vanessa truly meant it.
Outside, rain began falling harder.
Thunder rumbled in the distance.
Inside the quiet house, the ticking grandfather clock echoed through the living room.
Emma glanced toward the front door.
Only fifteen feet away.
It might as well have been fifteen miles.
Vanessa followed her gaze.
"Don't even think about it."
Emma remained silent.
Vanessa reached into her purse and removed a black fountain pen.
She placed it neatly on top of the transfer documents.
"One signature."
"That's all."
Emma slowly pushed the papers away with her foot.
"No."
Vanessa's jaw tightened again.
"You don't understand what happens if I fail."
"Then tell me."
"I can't."
"You expect me to hand over my children's future without an explanation?"
"I expect you to trust me."
Emma let out a bitter laugh despite the pain.
"You broke into our office."
"You searched our private documents."
"You stole my phone."
"And now you've hit me."
Her voice trembled.
"What exactly have you done that deserves my trust?"
Vanessa looked away for the first time.
Just briefly.
Long enough for Emma to notice the dark circles beneath her eyes.
The trembling fingers.
The exhausted face hidden beneath expensive makeup.
Something had happened.
Something terrible.
But whatever it was...
It didn't justify this.
Another contraction hit.
Emma cried out.
This one lasted longer.
Much longer.
She gritted her teeth until it finally eased.
Warm liquid trickled down her legs.
She looked down.
Her pajama pants were soaked.
Her heart stopped.
"My water..."
She whispered.
"Oh God..."
"The babies are coming."
For the first time, genuine fear flashed across Vanessa's face.
"What?"
"My water broke."
Emma looked up desperately.
"Please."
"If we don't leave now..."
"My babies could die."
Vanessa stood frozen.
She wasn't prepared for this.
She had expected tears.
Arguments.
Maybe even a call to the police.
She had not expected premature labor.
Not at thirty-four weeks.
Her breathing became uneven.
She glanced toward the front door.
Then back at the documents.
Then at Emma.
The deadline.
The trust.
The babies.
Everything was collapsing at once.
Emma seized the moment.
Ignoring the pain, she forced herself to her feet.
She took one shaky step toward the hallway.
Then another.
Vanessa noticed.
"No."
Emma kept walking.
"I have to get help."
Vanessa rushed forward and grabbed her arm.
Emma cried out.
"Let me go!"
"You'll call Daniel!"
"Of course I'll call my husband!"
"You can't!"
"Why not?"
Vanessa didn't answer.
Instead, she tightened her grip.
Emma struggled to pull free.
"You're hurting me!"
"You'll ruin everything!"
Emma twisted with all the strength she had left.
Vanessa lost her balance for a split second.
It was enough.
Emma broke free.
Ignoring the searing pain shooting through her pelvis, she staggered toward the hallway leading to the garage.
Her car keys.
If she could reach them...
She could drive herself.
Or at least sound the car alarm.
Behind her, Vanessa shouted,
"Emma!"
Emma didn't stop.
She reached the hallway table and grabbed the bowl where the keys usually rested.
Empty.
Her heart sank.
Vanessa's voice came from behind.
"I hid them."
Emma slowly turned.
Vanessa held up the key ring between two fingers.
"I thought you might try something."
Emma felt another contraction building.
Stronger than all the others.
She doubled over, unable to stay standing.
Vanessa watched silently.
Then, with deliberate calm, she slipped the keys back into her purse.
"You aren't leaving."
"Not until I get what I came for."
Emma's breathing became ragged.
She looked around desperately.
The hallway.
The staircase.
The kitchen.
Anything she could use.
Her eyes landed on the tall ceramic vase beside the console table.
It had been a wedding gift from Daniel's grandmother.
Heavy.
Fragile.
Without thinking, Emma reached for it.
Vanessa saw the movement.
"What are you doing?"
Emma didn't answer.
With every ounce of strength she had left, she shoved the vase off the table.
It crashed onto the hardwood floor.
The deafening sound shattered the silence.
Thousands of ceramic pieces exploded across the hallway.
Hidden beneath the console table, a small security sensor detected the violent impact.
A loud electronic beep echoed through the house.
Then another.
Suddenly—
WHOOP! WHOOP! WHOOP!
The mansion's intrusion alarm roared to life.
Red emergency lights began flashing along the ceiling.
Vanessa's face drained of color.
"What did you do?"
Emma leaned against the wall, exhausted but determined.
A faint smile crossed her lips.
"I guess..."
"...Daniel forgot to tell you."
She winced as another contraction seized her body.
"The security system..."
"...automatically alerts the monitoring company."
Vanessa stared at her in horror.
Somewhere, miles away, an emergency dispatcher had already received the alarm.
And if no one answered the verification call within minutes...
May you like
Someone would be coming to the house.
