Chapter 6 – Daniel Lands

Chapter 6 – Daniel Lands

The first thing Daniel noticed when he stepped out of the airport was the rain.

It was the same rain that had fallen the day everything changed.

Cold.

Heavy.

Relentless.

Two days earlier, he had left home believing he was returning to the same life he had always known.

A pregnant wife waiting for him.

A sister who loved him.

A family that was imperfect but safe.

Now he stood beneath the gray sky with a phone full of evidence, a wife recovering from trauma, and a terrible realization spreading through his mind.

Someone had entered his home.

Someone close.

Someone who knew exactly where to hurt him.

The Man Who Came Home Too Late

Daniel hated airports.

Normally, they represented progress.

Business deals.

New opportunities.

Growth.

But that morning, the airport felt like a place where he had lost something.

Because while he was thousands of miles away negotiating a contract, his wife had been trapped inside their home with someone he trusted.

His sister.

Vanessa.

The woman he had defended his entire life.

The woman he had helped countless times.

The woman who now sat in police custody.

Or at least, she should have.

But she wasn't.

And that bothered him more than anything.

The Missing Sister

Daniel walked through the hospital entrance carrying a small suitcase.

He hadn't even gone home.

Hadn't changed clothes.

Hadn't slept.

His entire world had narrowed to three things:

Emma.

The twins.

The truth.

Detective Rachel Moore was waiting near the maternity floor.

"You came alone?"

Daniel nodded.

"Vanessa?"

"Still missing."

His jaw tightened.

"How?"

The detective sighed.

"Because your sister knows how to disappear."

Daniel looked away.

"She always has."

Rachel noticed his expression.

"You knew she was capable of that?"

Daniel hesitated.

"Not this."

"What did you know?"

He didn't answer immediately.

Because admitting it felt like admitting he had failed.

"I knew Vanessa had problems."

"Financial problems?"

Daniel looked at her.

"How much do you know?"

"Enough."

The detective crossed her arms.

"Four hundred thousand dollars in debt."

Daniel looked down.

"She never told me."

"Would you have helped her?"

"Yes."

The answer came instantly.

And that was the painful part.

He would have.

No matter how much.

No matter what.

He would have tried.

The Brother She Counted On

Daniel remembered Vanessa as a little girl.

Always following him.

Always asking questions.

When their parents divorced, Daniel became the person she ran to.

When she failed exams.

When her first relationship ended.

When she lost jobs.

He was always there.

"You don't have to fix everything yourself," he would tell her.

But Vanessa never learned that lesson.

She learned something else.

That Daniel would save her.

Every time.

The Conversation He Never Wanted

Emma was awake when Daniel entered the room.

She looked smaller than he remembered.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

The confident woman who organized their home, planned their children's future, and laughed at his terrible jokes looked exhausted.

But alive.

That was all that mattered.

Daniel walked to her bedside.

"I'm here."

Emma smiled weakly.

"I know."

He sat beside her.

For a while, neither spoke.

Then Emma whispered:

"She wanted the code."

Daniel looked down.

"I know."

"How?"

"The police found the documents."

Her eyes closed.

"The transfer papers."

Daniel nodded.

"She wanted control of the trust."

Emma looked at him carefully.

"But she wasn't only after the money."

Daniel became still.

"You know something?"

Emma looked toward the babies.

"Before she came, she asked me questions."

"What kind?"

"About your grandfather."

Daniel frowned.

"My grandfather?"

"She wanted to know if he left anything besides the trust."

A silence filled the room.

Because that question was impossible.

Vanessa should not have cared.

Everyone knew about the money.

Nobody knew about anything else.

At least...

Daniel thought nobody did.

The Grandfather's Secret

Richard Hayes had been a complicated man.

Daniel's grandfather.

A businessman.

A man who built an empire from nothing.

People admired him.

But they also feared him.

After his death, lawyers handled everything.

Properties.

Investments.

Accounts.

The trust for Daniel's children.

Everything appeared normal.

Except for one thing.

A strange condition.

The trust could not be fully accessed until the twins reached adulthood.

Daniel had never questioned it.

He assumed his grandfather wanted to protect the children.

Now he wondered.

Protect them from what?

The Envelope

Detective Moore entered the room.

"I found something."

Daniel stood.

"What?"

She held an evidence bag.

Inside was an old envelope.

Yellowed with age.

"Where did you get that?"

"It was hidden in Vanessa's apartment."

Daniel stared.

His name was written across the front.

Not Vanessa's.

Not Emma's.

His.

The handwriting was familiar.

His grandfather's.

Daniel's hands became cold.

"She had this?"

"Yes."

"How long?"

"We don't know."

He slowly opened it.

Inside was a letter.

Only one page.

Daniel,

If you are reading this, something has gone wrong.

The trust was never created because I doubted your ability to manage money.

It was created because I discovered someone close to this family could not be trusted.

I didn't know who.

But I knew they would eventually come searching.

Protect your children.

Trust actions, not words.

Even from family.

—Richard

Daniel stopped reading.

The room became silent.

Emma looked at him.

"What does it say?"

Daniel couldn't answer.

Because the answer was terrifying.

His grandfather knew.

Someone in their family would betray them.

The Person in the Photograph

Detective Moore placed another item on the table.

A photograph.

"We found this with the letter."

Daniel picked it up.

It showed his grandfather standing beside a young woman.

A woman Daniel had never seen before.

Behind them was an old building.

And written on the back:

The person who knows the truth.

Daniel looked confused.

"Who is she?"

Detective Moore shook her head.

"We're trying to find out."

Emma stared at the photograph.

Then suddenly...

Her expression changed.

"Wait."

Daniel looked at her.

"What?"

"I've seen her."

The room froze.

"Where?"

Emma swallowed.

"In Vanessa's house."

Daniel stared.

"What?"

"Months ago."

Emma's voice became quieter.

"She had a picture frame hidden in a drawer."

"A picture of this woman."

The Fear Behind Vanessa's Eyes

Daniel remembered something.

A conversation from months earlier.

Vanessa had once asked him:

"Do you ever wonder why Grandpa kept so many secrets?"

He had laughed.

"No. Grandpa was just complicated."

Vanessa had looked at him strangely.

"No, Daniel."

"He was afraid."

At the time, Daniel thought she was being dramatic.

Now...

He wasn't so sure.

The Call From Vanessa

At that moment, Daniel's phone rang.

Unknown number.

Detective Moore immediately reached for her recorder.

Daniel answered.

"Vanessa?"

Silence.

Then a shaky breath.

"Daniel."

His grip tightened.

"Where are you?"

"Don't ask."

"Emma almost died."

"I know."

"You could have killed her."

A pause.

Then Vanessa whispered:

"I know."

That answer shocked him.

Because there was no excuse.

No denial.

Only guilt.

"Why?"

Daniel's voice cracked.

"Why would you do this?"

Vanessa cried softly.

"I wasn't trying to hurt her."

"Then what were you trying to do?"

Another silence.

Then:

"I was trying to find what Grandpa hid."

Daniel looked at the photograph.

"Who told you there was something hidden?"

Vanessa's voice lowered.

"Mom."

Daniel froze.

Their mother had died eight years ago.

"What did you say?"

"Our mother knew."

"She knew about Grandpa's secret."

Daniel felt the world shift.

"Vanessa..."

"I don't have much time."

"Where are you?"

"I can't tell you."

"Why?"

Because the next words she said made his blood run cold.

"Because the person hunting the secret is listening."

The call ended.

Daniel stared at the phone.

Then slowly looked around the room.

At Emma.

At the twins.

At the photograph.

The danger was no longer outside their home.

It was connected to their bloodline.

And somewhere in the shadows...

May you like

Someone was waiting for Daniel to uncover the truth.
