Chapter 7 – The Hospital Lie

Chapter 7 – The Hospital Lie

The hospital was supposed to be the safest place in the world.

That was what Daniel kept telling himself.

There were doctors.

Security cameras.

Nurses walking the halls day and night.

There were no locked rooms filled with secrets.

No hidden documents.

No family members pretending to be innocent.

But after everything that happened, Daniel had learned one painful truth:

Danger did not always enter through the front door.

Sometimes, it wore a familiar face.

The Visitor

The morning after Vanessa's call, Emma finally managed to sleep.

For the first time in days, her breathing became calm.

The twins were stable.

The doctors were optimistic.

Daniel sat beside her bed, watching the rise and fall of her chest.

He should have felt relieved.

Instead, he felt something else.

Suspicion.

His grandfather's letter kept replaying in his mind.

Trust actions, not words.

Even from family.

Those last three words hurt the most.

Because family was supposed to be the one place where you didn't need to question anything.

A soft knock interrupted his thoughts.

Daniel looked up.

A nurse stood in the doorway.

"Mr. Hayes?"

"Yes?"

"Your wife's mother is here."

Daniel frowned.

"My wife's mother?"

The nurse nodded.

"She says she needs to see Emma."

Daniel stood slowly.

"Emma's mother passed away."

The nurse's face changed.

"What?"

Daniel looked toward her.

"Her mother died twelve years ago."

The nurse looked confused.

"Sir, a woman is waiting downstairs. She gave your wife's full name."

A cold feeling moved through Daniel.

"Did she give you her name?"

The nurse checked her clipboard.

"Yes."

She looked up.

"Margaret Collins."

Daniel froze.

A Name From the Past

Emma's mother's name was not Margaret Collins.

It was Susan Parker.

She had died after a long illness when Emma was twenty-seven.

Daniel knew this.

He had attended the funeral.

He had held Emma while she cried.

He had watched her bury the last parent she had.

So who was Margaret Collins?

And why did she know Emma's name?

The Woman in the Lobby

Daniel walked downstairs with Detective Moore.

They found the woman sitting near the hospital entrance.

She looked to be in her late sixties.

Gray hair.

Elegant clothing.

A calm expression.

The kind of person who appeared trustworthy.

Which immediately made Daniel distrust her.

The woman stood when she saw him.

"Daniel Hayes?"

"Who are you?"

Her eyes moved toward Detective Moore.

Then back to him.

"My name is Margaret Collins."

"I don't know you."

She smiled sadly.

"I know."

The answer disturbed him.

"What do you want?"

The woman's expression changed.

"I need to warn you."

"About what?"

She looked around.

"Not here."

Detective Moore stepped forward.

"Ma'am, you can speak here."

Margaret hesitated.

Then she whispered:

"Your grandfather was not the man everyone believed he was."

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"Everyone keeps saying that."

"Because everyone is afraid to say the truth."

The First Story

Margaret sat down.

She looked at Daniel carefully.

"Richard Hayes had enemies."

"Business enemies?"

"No."

"Personal."

Daniel exchanged a glance with Detective Moore.

"How do you know my grandfather?"

Margaret looked down.

"Because I worked for him."

"When?"

"Twenty-five years ago."

Daniel frowned.

"Doing what?"

The woman hesitated.

Then:

"I was his accountant."

A strange silence followed.

"His accountant?"

Margaret nodded.

"And I discovered something."

"What?"

"Richard was hiding money."

Daniel's expression hardened.

"My grandfather had billions. Why would he hide money?"

"Because it wasn't his."

The Hidden Fortune

The words seemed impossible.

Daniel stared at her.

"What does that mean?"

Margaret leaned closer.

"Richard discovered someone was using his company to move illegal funds."

Detective Moore immediately became more serious.

"Do you have evidence?"

Margaret looked at her.

"I did."

"Where is it?"

"I don't know."

Daniel noticed something.

She wasn't afraid of him.

She wasn't afraid of the police.

She was afraid of someone else.

"Who took it?"

Margaret looked at him.

"Your family."

The Name She Wouldn't Say

Daniel felt his stomach tighten.

"Which family member?"

Margaret didn't answer.

"Say it."

The older woman looked away.

"I can't."

"You came here to warn me but won't tell me who?"

"Because knowing the truth can get people killed."

Daniel stepped closer.

"My wife almost died."

His voice became colder.

"My sister tried to steal from us."

"My children almost lost their mother."

"People are already getting hurt."

Margaret looked at him.

And for the first time...

She looked guilty.

"I'm sorry."

"Sorry doesn't help."

"No."

She whispered.

"But the truth might."

The Medical Record

Before Daniel could ask more questions, a hospital security officer approached.

"Mr. Hayes?"

Daniel turned.

"Yes?"

"We need you upstairs."

"Why?"

The officer looked uncomfortable.

"There is a problem with your wife's medical file."

Daniel immediately followed.

The Missing Information

When Daniel reached Emma's room, a doctor was standing beside the computer.

His expression was serious.

"Mr. Hayes."

"What happened?"

The doctor turned the screen toward him.

"Someone accessed your wife's medical records last night."

Daniel frowned.

"Who?"

"We don't know."

"Is that possible?"

The doctor nodded.

"Someone used a staff login."

Detective Moore stepped closer.

"Was anything changed?"

The doctor hesitated.

"Yes."

"What?"

"The notes about the fall."

Daniel's face changed.

"What notes?"

The doctor scrolled.

"The original report stated your wife suffered trauma caused by being pushed."

Silence.

Then:

"Someone changed it."

Daniel stared.

"What does it say now?"

The doctor answered quietly:

"Accidental fall."

The Hospital Lie

Everything stopped.

Daniel looked at Emma sleeping peacefully.

Someone had tried to rewrite what happened.

Not just hide it.

Change it.

Make the truth disappear.

Detective Moore's voice became low.

"Someone is protecting Vanessa."

Daniel shook his head.

"No."

"Someone is protecting whoever is above Vanessa."

The words hit harder.

Because Daniel had already suspected it.

Vanessa was not the mastermind.

She was a desperate person being controlled.

A person who had been sent into their home.

The Nurse Who Remembered

As they investigated the altered records, a young nurse approached.

"Excuse me."

Everyone turned.

She looked nervous.

"I think I know who changed it."

The detective stepped forward.

"Who?"

The nurse swallowed.

"A woman."

"What woman?"

"She came here last night."

Daniel's heart raced.

"Describe her."

The nurse thought.

"Older."

"Blonde hair."

"Expensive clothes."

Daniel felt the blood leave his face.

"Claire?"

The nurse nodded slowly.

"Yes."

The Impossible Connection

Detective Moore looked at Daniel.

"Who is Claire?"

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

Because he didn't know.

He didn't know why that name felt familiar.

He didn't know why his grandfather's warning suddenly seemed connected.

He didn't know why Vanessa's obsession with the secret had led back to this woman.

But he knew one thing.

Someone had entered the hospital.

Someone had changed evidence.

Someone wanted Emma's attack to disappear.

And that person was not hiding anymore.

Emma Wakes Up

That evening, Emma opened her eyes.

Daniel was immediately beside her.

"Hey."

She smiled weakly.

"Hey."

For a moment, everything felt normal.

Then Emma saw his expression.

"What happened?"

Daniel hesitated.

"There was someone here."

Her face changed.

"Who?"

"Someone changed your medical records."

Emma became pale.

"Daniel..."

"What?"

She swallowed.

"There was a woman."

"What woman?"

Emma looked toward the door.

Her voice dropped.

"The woman Vanessa was afraid of."

Daniel froze.

"You know her?"

Emma nodded slowly.

"I saw her before."

"When?"

"The day before Vanessa came."

Daniel leaned closer.

"Where?"

Emma's eyes filled with fear.

"In our house."

A silence fell.

"She was standing outside our bedroom."

Daniel felt his heart stop.

"What was she doing?"

Emma looked at him.

"Watching us."

Then she whispered the words that changed everything.

"Daniel..."

"She wasn't looking for the trust."

"She was looking for something hidden inside this house."

Outside the hospital room, a shadow moved past the glass door.

Someone had been listening.

Someone who now knew Emma remembered.

And whoever it was...

May you like

Was not finished.
