Chapter 11 – The Kidnappers

Chapter 11 – The Kidnappers
The message disappeared three seconds after Daniel read it.
Not deleted.
Not erased.
Just gone.
As if it had never existed.
But Daniel knew what he had seen.
He knew because fear had a different language.
It didn't need proof.
It didn't need witnesses.
It only needed one sentence.
Your wife and children will suffer for your curiosity.
The Moment Everything Changed
Daniel stood frozen in his grandfather's study.
The recording continued to play silently on the screen.
His mother's voice.
His grandfather's voice.
Twenty-two years of secrets trapped inside a few minutes of audio.
But none of it mattered now.
Not compared to Emma.
Not compared to the twins.
Rachel noticed the change in his expression immediately.
"What happened?"
Daniel turned his phone toward her.
"The message disappeared."
Rachel frowned.
"What message?"
"Someone threatened my family."
Her face hardened.
"Show me."
"I can't."
"Daniel."
"I know what I saw."
Rachel studied him.
She had investigated hundreds of cases.
She had seen people panic.
She had seen people imagine threats where none existed.
But Daniel wasn't panicking.
He was calculating.
That scared her more.
"Call the hospital."
The Empty Hospital Room
The call connected immediately.
A nurse answered.
"Hayes family room."
Daniel's voice tightened.
"This is Daniel Hayes. I need to speak with my wife's nurse."
"One moment."
The seconds felt endless.
Then:
"Mr. Hayes?"
"Is Emma okay?"
A pause.
The nurse's silence lasted too long.
Daniel's heart stopped.
"What happened?"
"Your wife is fine."
He exhaled.
"But..."
"What?"
"The room was empty for approximately seven minutes."
Daniel stood straighter.
"Empty?"
"The doctor took her for an examination."
"Who authorized it?"
The nurse hesitated.
"Doctor Lewis."
Daniel frowned.
"I didn't approve that."
"You don't need to approve medical procedures."
"Did Emma request it?"
Another pause.
"No."
The blood drained from his face.
"Where is she now?"
"Back in her room."
Daniel looked at Rachel.
They both knew.
Something was wrong.
The Woman Wearing a White Coat
Twenty minutes later, Daniel arrived at the hospital.
He ran.
He didn't care who watched.
He didn't care who noticed.
All he cared about was Emma.
When he entered the room, she was sitting upright.
Confused.
But alive.
Daniel rushed to her.
"Emma."
She grabbed his hand.
"Daniel, what's wrong?"
He looked at her.
"Did someone take you?"
Her eyes widened.
"What?"
"Did someone move you from this room?"
"No."
She looked toward the door.
"Why?"
Daniel looked at the hallway.
A woman stood at the end of it.
Watching.
Blonde hair.
Elegant clothes.
Calm expression.
The same description the nurse had given.
The same woman connected to the altered records.
Daniel whispered:
"That's her."
Emma followed his gaze.
Her face changed.
Because she recognized her.
The Woman From the House
"That's the woman."
Daniel turned.
"What?"
Emma's breathing became uneven.
"The woman I saw outside our bedroom."
Rachel immediately moved toward the hallway.
But the woman was already walking away.
Fast.
"Stop!"
The hospital erupted into chaos.
Doctors turned.
Visitors stepped aside.
The woman disappeared around the corner.
Rachel chased her.
Daniel stayed with Emma.
Because suddenly he understood.
The woman didn't come to hurt Emma.
She came to confirm something.
She came to see if Emma remembered.
The Security Footage
The hospital security team reviewed the cameras.
The woman had entered using a fake identification badge.
She had accessed restricted areas.
She had entered Emma's room.
But there was something strange.
She hadn't touched Emma.
She hadn't searched anything.
She had simply stood beside the bed.
Watching.
"Why?" Daniel asked.
Rachel looked at the footage.
"Maybe she wasn't looking for something."
"Then what?"
Rachel paused.
"Maybe she was waiting for Emma to wake up."
The Second Message
While investigators searched the hospital, Daniel received another message.
This time it stayed.
No disappearing.
No tricks.
Just a photograph.
His heart dropped.
It was Emma.
Taken from inside the hospital room.
While she slept.
Below the picture were four words.
WE CAN REACH YOU.
Daniel felt something inside him break.
Rachel saw the image.
Her expression changed.
"This is no longer intimidation."
"What is it?"
"A declaration."
Vanessa's Warning
Then Daniel received a call.
Unknown number.
He answered immediately.
"Vanessa?"
Her breathing was frantic.
"You need to listen."
"Where are you?"
"I don't have much time."
"Vanessa, what is happening?"
A pause.
Then:
"They took someone."
Daniel froze.
"Who?"
"My friend."
"Who?"
"The person who was helping me escape."
Daniel's expression changed.
"Someone was helping you?"
Vanessa cried quietly.
"Yes."
"Who?"
She whispered:
"Margaret Collins."
The Woman Who Knew Everything
Daniel gripped the phone.
"Where is Margaret?"
"I don't know."
"Vanessa."
"I saw them take her."
"Who?"
Vanessa's voice shook.
"The same people who forced me to steal the code."
Daniel looked at Rachel.
"Who are they?"
Vanessa went silent.
Then:
"Daniel..."
Her voice cracked.
"You need to understand something."
"What?"
"They don't care about the money."
"I know."
"No."
Her voice became urgent.
"You don't."
Daniel froze.
"What are you saying?"
"The trust was never supposed to be opened."
"Then why did they want the code?"
Vanessa whispered:
"Because opening the trust releases the evidence."
A pause.
"And someone is willing to kill to stop it."
The Abduction
The police traced Vanessa's call.
But before they could locate her...
The line went dead.
Then a message appeared.
Not from Vanessa.
From someone else.
A video.
Daniel opened it.
The screen showed a dark room.
Margaret Collins was sitting in a chair.
Her hands tied.
A person stood behind her.
The face was hidden.
The voice was distorted.
"Daniel Hayes."
Daniel felt sick.
"We warned you."
The person leaned closer to Margaret.
"You opened the door."
Daniel's hands tightened.
"Stop."
But the video continued.
"You wanted the truth."
The person whispered.
"Now you will see what truth costs."
The screen went black.
The Confession File
Rachel immediately contacted emergency teams.
But Daniel didn't move.
He looked back at the laptop.
The confession file was still open.
His mother's voice waited.
The truth was still there.
The enemy wanted him afraid.
They wanted him distracted.
They wanted him to stop searching.
But they made one mistake.
They threatened the wrong people.
Daniel looked at Emma.
At the small movement of her hand resting protectively over her stomach.
His children.
His family.
The people he had failed to protect once.
Never again.
The Last Recording
Daniel pressed play.
The confession continued.
Elizabeth's voice returned.
"I didn't want anyone hurt."
Richard answered:
"But people were hurt."
"I was trying to protect our family."
"No."
Richard's voice became cold.
"You were protecting yourself."
Daniel closed his eyes.
Then his mother's next words came.
Words that changed everything.
"Then tell Daniel the truth yourself."
Silence.
Richard asked:
"What truth?"
Elizabeth whispered:
"That Daniel isn't your son."
The room went silent.
Daniel stopped breathing.
Rachel stared at him.
Emma looked confused.
The recording continued.
But Daniel couldn't hear anything anymore.
Because the greatest secret of his family's past...
Was no longer about money.
May you like
It was about him.
