Chapter 2 – A Desperate Escape

Chapter 2 – A Desperate Escape
The alarm was deafening.
Red lights flashed across the walls, painting the once peaceful home in a terrifying glow.
Emma had never hated the sound before.
That alarm had always represented safety.
Protection.
Daniel had installed the system after a neighbor's house was burglarized. He had laughed when he showed her how every door, every window, and every motion sensor connected directly to the security company.
"Nothing happens in this house without someone knowing," he had told her.
At the time, Emma had teased him.
"You act like we live in a fortress."
Daniel had smiled.
"We do. Because you and our babies are worth protecting."
Now, lying against the hallway wall with her hand pressed over her stomach, Emma held onto that memory like a lifeline.
Because Daniel wasn't here.
But maybe someone else would come.
Vanessa moved quickly.
The fear on her face disappeared, replaced by panic.
She rushed toward the security panel near the kitchen.
"No, no, no..."
Her fingers shook as she entered a code.
The alarm continued screaming.
Emma watched through blurry vision.
"You don't know the code."
Vanessa froze.
Then slowly turned around.
"What?"
"Daniel changed it last month."
Emma's voice was weak, but she forced herself to continue.
"He told me only the monitoring company had the updated password."
Vanessa stared at her.
"You knew?"
Emma almost laughed.
"No."
"I knew you weren't supposed to be here."
The truth hit Vanessa harder than any accusation.
She had spent hours searching Daniel's office.
She had read documents.
Checked drawers.
Opened locked cabinets.
She believed she knew everything.
But she had underestimated one thing.
Daniel trusted his wife.
Not his sister.
The alarm suddenly stopped.
Silence returned.
For a moment, neither woman moved.
Vanessa looked toward the control panel.
"How did it stop?"
Emma frowned.
She didn't know.
Then the answer came.
A voice from the speaker.
"Security monitoring. This is James calling from Sentinel Protection. We have received an emergency alarm at the residence. Please provide your verification code."
Vanessa's eyes widened.
Emma's heart lifted.
The call was coming through the house system.
Help was already reaching for them.
Vanessa rushed toward the speaker.
"False alarm."
The operator responded immediately.
"Ma'am, please state your name and authorization."
Vanessa hesitated.
Only a second.
But it was enough.
"Ma'am?"
Emma saw panic return to her face.
"Who are you?"
Vanessa hung up.
The house became silent again.
But this silence was different.
It carried a countdown.
"They're coming," Emma whispered.
Vanessa looked at her.
"No."
"You don't know that."
"They will."
Emma forced herself upright.
"You can't stop them."
Vanessa's expression changed.
A terrible realization crossed her face.
If the security company called Daniel...
Everything would be over.
The trust.
The documents.
Her lies.
All of it.
"No."
She whispered.
"No, I still have time."
Emma watched her carefully.
"Time for what?"
Vanessa didn't answer.
She grabbed the leather folder.
Then she moved toward the front door.
Emma felt a small spark of hope.
Was she leaving?
Was this finally over?
But Vanessa stopped at the door.
She turned back.
And Emma immediately knew.
She wasn't escaping.
She was making sure Emma couldn't.
The front door lock clicked.
Then the deadbolt turned.
Vanessa walked to every window.
One by one.
Locked.
The back door.
Locked.
The garage entrance.
Locked.
Emma stared at her in disbelief.
"You are trapping me here."
Vanessa didn't look at her.
"I can't let anyone find those papers."
"You think papers matter more than two babies?"
Vanessa stopped.
For a moment, her shoulders lowered.
Then she whispered:
"You don't understand."
Emma shook her head.
"No."
"I understand perfectly."
"You destroyed your own life, and now you want to destroy mine to escape it."
Vanessa's eyes flashed.
"Don't pretend you know what I've been through."
"Then tell me."
Silence.
"Tell me why you are willing to hurt me."
Vanessa gripped the folder tighter.
Her voice cracked.
"Because I have nothing left."
Another contraction hit.
Emma gasped.
This one was different.
Pressure.
Pain.
A frightening heaviness.
She grabbed the wall.
Vanessa noticed.
"You need to sit."
Emma looked at her sharply.
"Now you care?"
Vanessa looked away.
"I don't want them hurt."
"But you are hurting them."
"I know."
The answer surprised Emma.
Vanessa looked exhausted.
Broken.
"I know."
For one second, Emma saw the woman Daniel had grown up with.
The little sister who used to send birthday cards.
The woman who cried at their wedding.
Then the moment disappeared.
Because desperation had eaten everything else.
Emma slowly moved toward the kitchen.
Vanessa followed.
"Where are you going?"
"Water."
"You stay where I can see you."
Emma didn't answer.
She reached the kitchen counter.
Her phone charger sat near the coffee machine.
Her phone was gone.
But Daniel had taught her something.
Always have another way.
She looked toward the small emergency tablet mounted near the refrigerator.
The home system tablet.
Connected to security.
Connected to Daniel.
Vanessa followed her eyes.
Immediately, she understood.
"No."
Emma reached for it.
Vanessa grabbed her shoulder.
Emma cried out.
The pain made her legs weaken.
"Stop!"
"Don't make me do this."
"You already did."
Emma pushed against her.
The tablet slipped from its holder.
It fell.
The screen cracked.
Vanessa stared at it.
Then she did something Emma never expected.
She kicked it.
Hard.
The screen went black.
The sound of sirens appeared in the distance.
Both women froze.
Emma looked toward the window.
Blue lights reflected faintly against the wet street.
Vanessa's breathing stopped.
"No."
"They came too fast."
Emma closed her eyes.
Relief flooded through her.
But then Vanessa looked toward the back hallway.
Not toward the police.
Toward the staircase.
A new idea appeared in her eyes.
A desperate one.
Emma saw it immediately.
"What are you thinking?"
Vanessa didn't answer.
She moved toward the stairs.
Emma's blood ran cold.
"No."
Vanessa looked back.
"I just need a few more minutes."
"Vanessa, don't."
But she kept walking.
Upstairs was Daniel's office.
The place where the original trust documents had been stored.
The place where she believed the recovery code was hidden.
Emma forced herself forward.
"No."
Her voice was stronger this time.
"You are not going upstairs."
Vanessa stopped.
"Move."
"No."
"I said move."
Emma stood between Vanessa and the stairs despite the pain.
Her hands trembled.
Her entire body trembled.
But she didn't move.
"Those documents are not worth my children's lives."
Vanessa stared at her.
Then slowly...
She smiled.
A cold, empty smile.
"You're right."
Emma felt a chill.
"They aren't."
Vanessa stepped closer.
"The code is."
Before Emma could respond, Vanessa suddenly pushed past her.
Emma lost her balance.
Her foot slipped on the broken ceramic pieces scattered across the floor.
And everything happened at once.
A sharp pain.
A scream.
The world spinning.
Emma fell backward.
Down.
Toward the first step of the staircase.
Vanessa reached out.
For a brief moment...
It looked like she might catch her.
But she stopped.
Just stopped.
Emma's hand missed hers by inches.
Then she fell.
One step.
Two.
Three.
The impact sent pain exploding through her body.
The room blurred.
The sound of sirens grew louder.
Vanessa stood at the top of the stairs, frozen.
Looking down.
At the woman carrying her brother's children.
At the consequences of everything she had done.
Then Emma felt warmth spreading beneath her.
Her eyes widened.
No.
Not now.
Not yet.
The babies.
The ambulance doors outside slammed open.
Voices shouted.
"Police! Open the door!"
Vanessa looked toward the entrance.
Then back at Emma.
And for the first time...
May you like
She realized she might not be able to escape what she had done.
