Chapter 4 – The Neighbor's Suspicion

Chapter 4 – The Neighbor's Suspicion
The Hayes house had always been known as the quietest home on Willow Creek Lane.
The kind of place where neighbors waved from their driveways, children rode bicycles on warm evenings, and the only sounds after sunset were the rustling trees and the occasional laughter coming from the backyard.
That was why something felt wrong that afternoon.
Something deeply wrong.
The Woman Across the Street
Evelyn Carter had lived across from the Hayes family for eleven years.
She knew Daniel as the hardworking man who always helped elderly neighbors carry groceries.
She knew Emma as the woman who planted flowers every spring and remembered everyone's birthdays.
And she knew Vanessa.
Not well.
But enough.
Enough to notice when something changed.
Evelyn had been away visiting her sister for the weekend.
She had planned to return Sunday evening.
Instead, she came home Saturday afternoon because her sister's water heater broke, ending the visit early.
As she pulled into her driveway, she immediately noticed something unusual.
The Hayes house.
The curtains were closed.
The front porch light was on.
And a black SUV was parked at the curb.
Evelyn frowned.
She recognized Daniel's car.
Emma's car.
But not that one.
She grabbed her groceries and walked toward her house.
Then she stopped.
Because she heard something.
A sound coming from across the street.
A woman's voice.
Angry.
Loud.
The Argument
At first, Evelyn thought she was imagining it.
The Hayes family rarely argued.
But then she heard it again.
"You're not listening to me!"
A woman's voice.
Vanessa.
Evelyn looked toward the house.
The front curtains moved slightly.
Then she heard another voice.
Emma.
"We can fix this without hurting anyone."
Evelyn froze.
Without hurting anyone?
That was not a normal sentence.
Not between family members.
Not between friends.
Not in a peaceful home.
She slowly placed her grocery bags inside her house.
Then she returned to the window.
Something Was Wrong
Evelyn knew she should mind her own business.
People always said that.
Don't interfere.
Don't assume.
Don't get involved in family problems.
But something about the situation bothered her.
She watched the house carefully.
Then she noticed something else.
The garage door.
It was open.
But no car was inside.
And the front door...
Was locked.
She could see Vanessa through the glass.
Standing near the entrance.
Not leaving.
Not coming in.
Almost like she was making sure nobody else could.
Evelyn's stomach tightened.
The Missing Smile
Evelyn had met Vanessa several times before.
At Christmas gatherings.
Birthday dinners.
Neighborhood events.
Vanessa had always been charming.
A little dramatic.
A little spoiled.
But charming.
Today she looked different.
Her face was tense.
Her movements were rushed.
She kept checking her phone.
Over and over.
Like someone waiting for bad news.
Then Evelyn saw Emma.
Only for a second.
Behind the curtains.
Emma was standing strangely.
One hand held her stomach.
The other held onto the wall.
Evelyn immediately noticed.
Emma was pregnant.
Very pregnant.
And she looked scared.
The Decision
Evelyn picked up her phone.
Her finger hovered over the emergency number.
She hesitated.
What if she was wrong?
What if this was just a family argument?
What if she embarrassed good people?
Then she heard a crash.
A loud one.
Followed by Emma's scream.
Evelyn didn't hesitate anymore.
She called.
"Emergency services."
"My neighbors may be in danger."
The Dispatcher
"Ma'am, what is the address?"
Evelyn gave it.
"What makes you believe someone is in danger?"
Evelyn looked through the window.
"I don't know exactly."
She swallowed.
"But something is wrong."
"Can you describe what you heard?"
"A woman shouting."
"A pregnant woman crying."
"Something breaking."
The dispatcher remained calm.
"Are you able to see anyone injured?"
"No."
"Do not approach the residence."
"I repeat, do not approach."
Evelyn nodded.
"I won't."
But she stayed by the window.
Watching.
Waiting.
The Secret Vanessa Didn't Know
Inside the Hayes house, Vanessa had no idea anyone was watching.
She was too focused on escaping.
After Emma's fall, everything had changed.
She hadn't planned for this.
She hadn't planned for blood.
For police.
For ambulances.
For witnesses.
Her entire plan had depended on control.
And now she had none.
She looked down at the papers scattered on the table.
The trust transfer documents.
Still unsigned.
She had failed.
But she couldn't leave empty-handed.
Because if she returned without the money...
They would come for her.
The Phone Call
Her phone vibrated.
The same number.
Vanessa stared at it.
She didn't want to answer.
But she knew she had no choice.
She pressed accept.
"What?"
A man's voice responded.
"How is the wife?"
Vanessa looked toward the stairs.
"She fell."
A pause.
Then:
"Did she sign?"
"No."
Silence.
The kind of silence that felt like a threat.
"You promised."
"I know."
"You told us the husband trusted you."
"He does."
"Then why don't you have the code?"
Vanessa closed her eyes.
"Because she doesn't have it."
The man laughed.
"Then you were wrong."
"No."
"You were wrong about everything."
Vanessa's hand tightened around the phone.
"I'll get it."
"You have until tomorrow morning."
"And Vanessa?"
She swallowed.
"Yes?"
"If you fail..."
The man's voice became colder.
"...we stop waiting."
The call ended.
The Police Arrive
Outside, Evelyn saw flashing lights.
Two police cars turned onto the street.
Her heart raced.
She stepped outside.
An officer approached.
"Ma'am?"
"I called."
"You're the neighbor?"
"Yes."
"What did you observe?"
Evelyn pointed toward the Hayes home.
"I heard arguing."
"A woman's voice."
"Then a scream."
The officer looked toward the house.
"Did anyone leave?"
"I saw the husband's sister."
"She hasn't left."
The officer's expression changed slightly.
"How do you know?"
"Because she keeps looking outside."
The Door
The officers walked toward the Hayes house.
They knocked.
"Police department."
No answer.
They knocked again.
"Open the door."
Inside, Vanessa froze.
Her face drained of color.
Police.
Already.
She looked toward the back entrance.
Then upstairs.
Then toward the kitchen.
No escape.
The officer knocked harder.
"We know someone is inside."
Vanessa whispered:
"No..."
She looked around desperately.
Then her eyes landed on the leather folder.
The trust documents.
The evidence.
Everything.
If police found those...
It was over.
She grabbed the folder.
The Last Second
The front door handle moved.
The officers were preparing to enter.
Vanessa ran toward the kitchen.
Not toward the exit.
Toward the sink.
She opened the cabinet beneath it.
Inside was a small garbage disposal unit.
She held the documents above it.
Her hands shook.
One choice.
Destroy the evidence.
Or face the truth.
Then her phone vibrated again.
A message appeared.
DON'T GET CAUGHT.
Vanessa stared at the words.
Her breathing became faster.
The police were seconds away.
The documents represented her last chance.
But destroying them would prove she had something to hide.
She looked toward the front door.
The lock began to break.
And then...
A small sound came from upstairs.
A weak voice.
Emma.
"Help..."
Vanessa froze.
Because for the first time...
She heard what she had done.
Not the money.
Not the debt.
Not the fear.
A person.
A woman.
Her brother's wife.
The mother of two unborn children.
Still alive.
Still fighting.
The door finally crashed open.
May you like
And everything Vanessa had tried to hide was about to come into the light.
