Chapter 11: Margaret's Confession

Chapter 11: Margaret's Confession

A cold wind swept across the gardens of Ashford Manor as the mansion slowly awakened.

For the first time in more than two decades, the past was no longer buried.

Emily had discovered the secret bank account.

Daniel had uncovered his father's hidden letters.

Detective Hayes had confirmed the existence of the mysterious trust.

Yet one question continued to haunt them all.

Why had William Ashford hidden his own daughter from the world?

Only one person might know the answer.

Margaret.

Margaret Ashford stood alone in the family chapel.

The morning sunlight filtered through the stained-glass windows, painting the stone floor with brilliant shades of blue and crimson.

She had come here every year on the anniversary of William's death.

She always brought white lilies.

Today, however, she carried nothing.

Only guilt.

She looked at William's memorial plaque.

"I can't keep your promise anymore," she whispered.

A tear slipped down her cheek.

"I'm sorry."

Behind her, the chapel door creaked open.

Daniel entered quietly.

He had searched the entire mansion after discovering Margaret had left breakfast untouched.

When he saw the expression on her face, he knew.

She had finally decided to tell the truth.

"I've been waiting for this day," Daniel said softly.

Margaret smiled sadly.

"So have I."

They sat together in the front pew.

For several moments, only silence filled the chapel.

Finally, Margaret spoke.

"When I married William, we loved each other."

Daniel nodded.

"I know."

"He was kind."

"Honest."

"And stubborn."

A faint smile crossed Daniel's face.

"That sounds like him."

Margaret's smile quickly faded.

"Our marriage wasn't perfect."

She looked toward the stained-glass window.

"We tried for years to have another child."

Daniel looked confused.

"Another?"

Margaret nodded.

"You were still very young."

"I became pregnant twice."

Her voice trembled.

"I lost both babies."

Daniel had never heard this before.

His heart ached for the pain she had carried alone.

Margaret continued.

"The losses changed us."

"William buried himself in work."

"I buried myself in silence."

She closed her eyes.

"And somewhere in that silence..."

"...we drifted apart."

Outside the chapel, Detective Hayes remained discreetly out of sight.

He had no intention of interrupting the conversation.

But if Margaret finally revealed the truth, it could solve the investigation.

Richard Collins stood beside him.

"Do you think she'll tell him everything?"

Richard sighed.

"I don't know."

"I've waited twenty-one years for this."

Inside, Margaret's confession continued.

"One afternoon," she said quietly, "William came home with someone."

Daniel already knew who she meant.

"Sarah."

Margaret nodded.

"She was terrified."

"She had nowhere to go."

"William asked me to give her temporary work."

Daniel frowned.

"You agreed?"

"Of course."

"I didn't know anything then."

Margaret smiled sadly.

"Sarah was gentle."

"Respectful."

"And incredibly brave."

"Everyone liked her."

Daniel lowered his eyes.

"So did Father."

Margaret closed her eyes.

"Yes."

Silence settled between them.

Daniel finally asked the question he had dreaded.

"When did you find out?"

Margaret answered honestly.

"The day Emily was born."

Daniel looked stunned.

"You knew?"

Margaret nodded slowly.

"I knew William was her father."

Across the mansion, Emily sat quietly in the music room.

She reread William's letter again and again.

Each sentence raised more questions.

There was a soft knock.

Mrs. Harris entered carrying tea.

"I thought you might need this."

Emily smiled.

"Thank you."

Mrs. Harris sat beside her.

"You look like Sarah."

Emily laughed softly.

"Everyone keeps saying that."

"It's true."

Mrs. Harris hesitated.

"But every time you smile..."

She paused.

"...you remind me of William."

Emily's smile disappeared.

"You knew."

Mrs. Harris lowered her head.

"I suspected."

"You never told me."

"It wasn't my secret."

Emily looked down at the letter.

"I wish someone had trusted me enough to tell me."

Mrs. Harris gently squeezed her hand.

"They were trying to protect you."

Emily whispered,

"I know."

"But sometimes..."

"...secrets hurt more than truth."

Back in the chapel, Daniel struggled to process Margaret's words.

"If you knew Emily was Father's daughter..."

He looked directly at her.

"...why didn't you tell me?"

Margaret's eyes filled with tears.

"Because I made a promise."

"To Father?"

"No."

She shook her head.

"To Sarah."

Daniel frowned.

"My mother promised Sarah?"

Margaret nodded.

"The night Sarah left the mansion."

Twenty-One Years Earlier

Rain battered the windows of Ashford Manor.

Sarah Carter stood in the entrance hall holding a tiny baby wrapped in a white blanket.

Emily slept peacefully in her arms.

William paced nervously.

"We can protect you."

Sarah shook her head.

"No."

"They'll never stop."

Margaret watched silently from the staircase.

William reached for Sarah's hand.

"You don't have to leave."

"I do."

"If I stay..."

Sarah looked down at the baby.

"...they'll use her."

William's voice broke.

"I won't let them."

Sarah smiled sadly.

"You can't stop everyone."

Margaret stepped forward.

"Who are you afraid of?"

Sarah looked toward the front door.

"They're already here."

Almost on cue, a black sedan pulled into the driveway.

William's face turned pale.

"They found us."

Sarah handed the baby to Margaret.

"If anything happens..."

She swallowed hard.

"...promise me Emily will grow up free."

Margaret looked at the sleeping child.

"I promise."

Sarah took Emily back into her arms.

Then she disappeared into the storm.

It was the last time Margaret ever saw her.

Back in the present, Daniel wiped a tear from his eye.

"You kept your promise."

Margaret nodded.

"But at a terrible cost."

Just then, Detective Hayes received an urgent phone call.

His expression changed instantly.

"What?"

Richard looked concerned.

"What happened?"

Hayes ended the call.

"The bank."

Daniel and Margaret hurried outside.

"What about it?"

Hayes answered grimly.

"The Ashford Educational Trust was accessed again."

Daniel frowned.

"But we were just there yesterday."

Hayes nodded.

"This happened thirty minutes ago."

"Who withdrew the money?"

"The beneficiary didn't."

Hayes held up a printed transaction report.

"Someone forged Emily's identity."

An hour later, the group arrived at the bank.

The manager looked shaken.

"I don't understand."

Daniel placed the forged withdrawal form on the desk.

"This signature isn't Emily's."

The manager agreed immediately.

"No."

"But the woman looked exactly like the identification photograph."

Emily stared at the security monitor replaying the footage.

The woman wore sunglasses.

A wide-brimmed hat.

Dark hair.

From a distance...

She looked remarkably like Emily.

Then the woman briefly turned toward the camera.

Emily gasped.

"That's impossible."

Daniel leaned closer.

"What?"

Emily whispered,

"She isn't pretending to be me."

Hayes frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Emily pointed at the screen.

"The woman..."

Her voice trembled.

"...has my face."

The room fell silent.

The resemblance was astonishing.

Not similar.

Not close.

Almost identical.

Hayes immediately ordered the video paused.

He zoomed in.

The mystery woman looked slightly older than Emily.

Her eyes were colder.

Her expression harder.

But there was no denying it.

She could have been Emily's twin.

Richard slowly removed his glasses.

His hands began to shake.

"No..."

Daniel looked at him.

"You recognize her?"

Richard stared at the frozen image.

"I prayed I'd never see her again."

Emily turned toward him.

"Who is she?"

Richard whispered two words that changed everything.

"Elizabeth Carter."

Emily frowned.

"I've never heard that name."

Richard's voice barely rose above a whisper.

"You wouldn't have."

He looked directly into Emily's eyes.

"Because your mother gave birth..."

He struggled to finish.

"...to twins."

The world seemed to stop.

Emily couldn't breathe.

A twin?

Her mother had never mentioned another child.

Daniel stared speechlessly at the monitor.

Margaret covered her mouth in horror.

Detective Hayes slowly looked from the screen...

...to Emily.

The woman who had withdrawn the money wasn't an impostor.

She was family.

May you like

And she had just stolen an inheritance that legally belonged to Emily.
