Chapter 9: Betrayal at Midnight

Chapter 9: Betrayal at Midnight

The old chapel fell into an uneasy silence.

Detective Michael Hayes stood at the entrance to the hidden vault, studying the shattered lock. Broken pieces of rusted iron lay scattered across the stone floor. Whoever had broken in had known exactly where to go. There were no signs of hesitation, no random damage, no wasted effort.

"This wasn't vandalism," Hayes said quietly.

Daniel nodded.

"They came for something specific."

Emily remained near the altar, unable to take her eyes off the lone photograph left behind.

William Ashford.

Sarah Carter.

And the unknown man standing beside them.

The stranger looked to be in his early forties, with dark hair, sharp eyes, and an expression that revealed nothing. Unlike William and Sarah, he wasn't smiling.

Almost as if he knew the future waiting for them.

Hayes took the photograph from Daniel.

"Do you recognize him?"

Daniel slowly shook his head.

"No."

Emily stared at the image.

"I've never seen him before."

Richard Collins, who had arrived moments later, looked at the photograph—and immediately turned pale.

Daniel noticed.

"You know him."

Richard looked away.

"I wish I didn't."

Silence settled over the chapel.

Finally, Richard whispered,

"His name was Victor Hale."

Hayes wrote the name into his notebook.

"Who was he?"

Richard took a long breath.

"He was your father's closest friend."

Daniel frowned.

"I've never heard of him."

"You weren't supposed to."

Richard's voice carried years of regret.

"After the fire, William ordered every reference to Victor removed from the family records."

Emily's heart skipped.

"Why?"

Richard closed his eyes.

"Because William believed Victor had betrayed him."

That evening, Ashford Manor became even more heavily guarded.

Detective Hayes stationed officers at every entrance.

No one was allowed to leave without permission.

No one new was allowed inside.

Yet despite the increased security, an uneasy feeling spread through the mansion.

It felt as though someone unseen was still moving freely through its halls.

Emily returned to her room shortly after sunset.

She carefully placed her mother's letter, the silver locket, and the old photograph inside the drawer beneath her bed.

Then she paused.

Something felt wrong.

She counted the items again.

The anonymous warning.

The letter.

The locket.

The photograph.

Everything seemed to be there.

Even so, she couldn't shake the feeling that someone had been watching her.

She quietly walked to the window.

Outside, the gardens were empty.

Only the old fountain shimmered beneath the moonlight.

Then—

A figure crossed the path near the hedge.

Dark clothing.

A hood.

Moving quickly.

Emily frowned.

She reached for the telephone beside her bed.

Before she could dial Daniel's extension, the lights suddenly flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then the entire servants' wing went dark.

Emergency lights illuminated the corridors with a faint red glow.

Mrs. Harris stepped out of her room.

"Everyone stay calm!"

Servants opened their doors, whispering nervously.

Emily picked up a flashlight and stepped into the hallway.

"Did the power fail?"

Mrs. Harris shook her head.

"Only this wing."

Daniel arrived moments later.

"The main power is still working."

Hayes followed close behind.

"Someone cut electricity to this section only."

Emily felt a chill.

It wasn't an accident.

It was another distraction.

At the same moment, deep inside the mansion's west wing, a shadow slipped silently into Daniel's library.

The intruder wore black gloves and carried a small flashlight.

The beam swept across the desk.

The letters.

The hidden will.

The damaged employee file.

Everything Daniel had gathered.

The intruder quickly opened a leather briefcase and began removing documents.

One by one.

Carefully.

Methodically.

Then—

The library door creaked open.

The intruder froze.

A familiar voice echoed through the darkness.

"I knew someone would come."

Daniel stepped into the room.

He had anticipated another attempt.

The intruder spun toward the open window.

Daniel lunged.

The two struggled violently across the floor.

Papers scattered everywhere.

The flashlight rolled beneath the desk.

For a brief moment, Daniel grabbed the intruder's wrist.

The black glove slipped off.

A silver ring gleamed beneath the moonlight.

An old signet ring engraved with a single letter.

H.

Before Daniel could react, the intruder struck him hard across the shoulder and escaped through the broken library window into the gardens.

Daniel rushed outside.

Nothing.

The figure had disappeared into the darkness.

Only the black glove remained on the library floor.

Hayes examined the glove carefully.

"No fingerprints."

Daniel picked up the silver ring that had fallen during the struggle.

"The ring came off with the glove."

Hayes looked closely.

"The letter H."

Richard, standing nearby, frowned.

"Hale."

Daniel looked at him.

"You think it belonged to Victor Hale?"

Richard slowly nodded.

"It looks like the Hale family crest."

Emily stared at the ring.

"If Victor betrayed my father..."

She hesitated.

"...why would someone still be protecting his secrets after twenty-one years?"

No one had an answer.

Meanwhile, Vanessa sat alone in her bedroom.

The burner phone vibrated inside her handbag.

She answered immediately.

The familiar distorted voice spoke first.

"You failed again."

Vanessa clenched her jaw.

"I had nothing to do with tonight."

"I don't believe you."

"I don't care."

The voice remained cold.

"Daniel still has the evidence."

"Not all of it."

Vanessa glanced toward her dresser.

Inside its hidden compartment rested several documents she had stolen years earlier.

She had never told anyone.

Not even the mysterious caller.

The voice spoke again.

"Tomorrow night."

"You'll receive new instructions."

The line went dead.

Vanessa stared at the phone.

For the first time, she considered something she had never allowed herself to think.

What if she wasn't working with the mastermind?

What if...

She had merely been another pawn?

Near midnight, Emily couldn't sleep.

She left her room and wandered toward the mansion's rear balcony.

The gardens below glowed beneath the silver moon.

Everything appeared peaceful.

Then she heard footsteps behind her.

She turned.

Daniel stood in the doorway.

"You couldn't sleep either?"

Emily smiled faintly.

"No."

He walked beside her.

For several minutes, neither spoke.

Finally Daniel broke the silence.

"When I was a child, my father used to bring me here."

Emily looked at him.

"He said this balcony was the only place in the house where people told the truth."

Emily smiled sadly.

"Then perhaps we should stay here."

Daniel laughed softly.

"Perhaps."

He reached into his pocket and removed the photograph from the chapel.

"I've been looking at this."

Emily studied it again.

"My mother looked happy."

Daniel nodded.

"So did my father."

He hesitated.

"If everything we're discovering is true..."

Emily already knew what he meant.

"We're family."

Daniel looked directly at her.

"No."

Emily frowned.

"What?"

"If William Ashford was your father..."

He smiled gently.

"Then you're my half-sister."

The words hung between them.

Neither had wanted to say them aloud.

Emily looked toward the stars.

"I spent my whole life wondering who I belonged to."

Daniel nodded.

"And now?"

She smiled through tears.

"Now I know."

For the first time since arriving at Ashford Manor...

Emily didn't feel completely alone.

Across the estate, hidden inside the abandoned greenhouse, another conversation unfolded.

A man stepped from the shadows.

His face remained concealed beneath a dark hat.

Vanessa stood waiting.

"You asked me to come."

The man nodded.

"You've made too many mistakes."

Vanessa crossed her arms.

"I've done everything you asked."

"Not everything."

He handed her a small envelope.

Inside was a single photograph.

Vanessa's eyes widened.

It showed her speaking with the hooded intruder only hours earlier.

She looked up in horror.

"You were watching me?"

The man smiled.

"I watch everyone."

Vanessa's voice trembled.

"What do you want?"

He stepped closer.

"I want the last page of William Ashford's hidden will."

"I don't have it."

"You do."

"I swear—"

Before she could finish, the man leaned close enough for her to hear his whisper.

"If Daniel finds it before I do..."

He smiled coldly.

"...you'll wish the necklace had been the worst thing you've ever done."

He disappeared into the darkness, leaving Vanessa alone with the photograph in her shaking hands.

She had spent years believing she was manipulating everyone around her.

Tonight, she realized someone else had been manipulating her from the very beginning.

Far above, unnoticed by either of them, Emily stood at the attic window.

She had gone upstairs searching for answers.

Instead, she witnessed Vanessa's secret midnight meeting.

She couldn't hear a single word.

But she saw enough.

Vanessa was hiding another betrayal.

May you like

And this one was far more dangerous than the first.
