Chapter 15: A Dangerous Alliance

Chapter 15: A Dangerous Alliance

The rain began just before dawn.

Gray clouds hung low over Ashford Manor, as if the sky itself mourned Vanessa's death.

Police officers moved quietly across the estate, collecting the last pieces of evidence from the ambushed convoy. News of the attack spread quickly through the mansion.

No one spoke above a whisper.

Vanessa Ashford had entered the estate as the woman everyone believed was the villain.

She had left it as a victim of someone far more dangerous.

Daniel stood by the library window, watching the rain fall across the gardens.

Detective Michael Hayes entered carrying a thick investigation file.

"The autopsy is complete."

Daniel turned.

"What did it show?"

Hayes placed the report on the desk.

"The sniper's bullet killed her instantly."

Daniel lowered his eyes.

"So she never had the chance to testify."

Hayes nodded grimly.

"And that's exactly why she was killed."

The Last Message

Among Vanessa's personal belongings, detectives found a folded piece of paper hidden inside the lining of her coat.

It wasn't addressed to the police.

Or to Daniel.

It contained only six handwritten words.

"The Guardian trusts no one. Run."

Hayes stared at the note.

"She wrote this after our interrogation."

Daniel frowned.

"She knew they were coming."

"She must have."

Hayes sighed.

"Unfortunately, she underestimated how quickly."

Emily's Decision

Emily couldn't stop thinking about Vanessa's final warning.

Don't trust Elizabeth.

The words haunted her.

She sat alone in the music room, gently turning the silver baby bracelet engraved with her sister's name between her fingers.

Mrs. Harris entered quietly.

"You haven't slept."

Emily smiled weakly.

"I keep wondering what my sister's life was like."

Mrs. Harris sat beside her.

"And?"

"If we had grown up together..."

Emily paused.

"...would everything be different?"

Mrs. Harris looked at the old piano.

"Perhaps."

"Or perhaps fate would have found another way."

Emily shook her head.

"I don't want Elizabeth to become my enemy."

Mrs. Harris smiled gently.

"Then don't let fear choose for you."

A Visitor from the Past

That afternoon, an elderly priest arrived unexpectedly at Ashford Manor.

Father Thomas Bennett had served the Ashford family chapel for more than thirty years before retiring.

Richard Collins greeted him warmly.

"Father Thomas."

The priest removed his hat.

"I came as soon as I heard about Vanessa."

Hayes stepped forward.

"We could use your help."

Father Thomas looked around the mansion.

"So the truth is finally coming out."

Daniel frowned.

"You know something."

The priest nodded slowly.

"I performed a baptism here twenty-one years ago."

Emily's heart skipped.

"My baptism?"

Father Thomas smiled sadly.

"No."

"There were two."

Silence filled the entrance hall.

The priest continued.

"William insisted both girls be baptized before sunrise."

Richard closed his eyes.

"I remember."

Father Thomas reached into his worn leather satchel and carefully removed a faded parish register.

Inside were two entries.

Emily Grace Carter

Elizabeth Rose Carter

Both bearing William Ashford's signature as witness.

Hayes examined the document.

"This proves William acknowledged both daughters privately."

Father Thomas nodded.

"He loved them equally."

Emily felt tears sting her eyes.

"My father never abandoned us."

"No."

The priest's voice was gentle.

"He spent the rest of his life trying to find what had been stolen."

The Guardian's Offer

Hundreds of miles away, inside the abandoned mountain cabin, Elizabeth Carter sat across from the man known only as The Guardian.

The stolen letter from William Ashford lay open on the table.

She had read it dozens of times.

It raised more questions than it answered.

The Guardian poured two cups of coffee.

"You've been quiet."

Elizabeth looked at him.

"You lied to me."

He smiled faintly.

"I omitted certain details."

"You told me William abandoned our mother."

"He did."

"He also created a trust for us."

The Guardian remained silent.

"He searched for me."

Again, silence.

Elizabeth slowly stood.

"You knew."

"I did."

"You let me hate him anyway."

The Guardian calmly met her gaze.

"Hate is easier to control than hope."

Elizabeth looked away.

For the first time in years...

She questioned the only man who had ever raised her.

A Name from the Ledger

Back at the manor, Detective Hayes received another breakthrough.

Financial investigators had traced the forged withdrawal from Emily's trust.

The money hadn't disappeared overseas.

Instead, it had been transferred through a network of shell companies before ending in a charitable foundation.

The foundation's chairman surprised everyone.

Victor Hale.

Daniel stared at the report.

"Impossible."

"He died twenty years ago."

Hayes nodded.

"Officially."

"But someone has continued operating under his name."

Richard looked troubled.

"Victor created dozens of companies before he vanished."

"He always believed money could hide people."

Hayes leaned forward.

"I think 'Victor Hale' has become more than one man."

Emily frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Hayes answered quietly.

"It may be a title."

The Secret Recording

The technicians finally restored the audio from the listening device hidden beneath the piano bench.

The recording captured Daniel reading William's letter to Emily.

Then another sound emerged.

A faint mechanical click.

Hayes enhanced the recording.

Footsteps.

A door opening.

Then a whisper barely audible in the background.

"She's the wrong daughter."

Everyone in the room froze.

Daniel replayed it.

Again.

The same whisper.

"She's the wrong daughter."

Emily looked confused.

"What does that mean?"

Richard's face turned pale.

"They never wanted you."

Hayes looked at him.

"They were always searching..."

Richard finished the sentence.

"...for Elizabeth."

The Hidden Diary

That evening, Father Thomas asked to visit the chapel one last time before returning to his parish.

While praying near the altar, he noticed something unusual.

One of the old wooden kneelers felt loose.

He carefully lifted it.

Hidden beneath was a small leather diary.

Its cover bore Sarah Carter's initials.

Emily carefully opened it.

The first pages described ordinary moments.

Her pregnancy.

William's excitement.

Her hopes for the future.

Then the entries became darker.

One page stood out.

October 14

Victor came today.

He didn't threaten William.

He threatened the girls.

He said one child carried something that could destroy everything he had built.

He called her "the true heir."

He never said which daughter.

Emily slowly closed the diary.

"So even my mother didn't know."

Father Thomas nodded.

"She spent the rest of her life trying to find the answer."

An Unexpected Alliance

Late that night, Elizabeth quietly packed her belongings inside the mountain cabin.

The Guardian entered.

"Where are you going?"

She zipped her bag shut.

"To Ashford Manor."

He smiled.

"To claim your inheritance?"

Elizabeth looked him straight in the eye.

"No."

"To find the truth."

The Guardian stepped closer.

"You'll never trust them."

"I don't trust anyone anymore."

He reached for her arm.

She pulled away.

"I raised you."

"You raised me with lies."

For the first time in decades...

The Guardian's calm expression cracked.

"You need me."

Elizabeth shook her head.

"No."

"I need my sister."

She walked toward the door.

"Elizabeth."

She stopped but didn't turn around.

"If you leave..."

The Guardian's voice became cold.

"...you become my enemy."

Elizabeth answered without looking back.

"Then maybe I always was."

She stepped into the snow and disappeared into the night.

The Guardian watched from the doorway.

Then he reached for a satellite phone hidden inside his coat.

One call.

One order.

"Activate Protocol Ashford."

Within seconds, encrypted messages spread across three different countries.

Hidden operatives who had remained dormant for years began moving toward England.

The final phase had begun.

And for the first time...

Emily and Elizabeth were walking toward the same destination.

One searching for family.

The other searching for forgiveness.

Neither realized that before they could become sisters...

May you like

They would be forced into the most dangerous alliance of their lives.
