Chapter 13: The Real Heir

Chapter 13: The Real Heir
The conference room at Ashford National Bank remained silent.
No one spoke after Richard Collins revealed the existence of Emily's twin sister.
The frozen security image on the monitor seemed almost unreal.
Two identical faces.
One standing in the room, overwhelmed by a lifetime of lies.
The other withdrawing millions of dollars from a secret trust before disappearing without a trace.
Emily stared at the screen.
"My mother..."
Her voice barely escaped her lips.
"...never told me."
Richard lowered his head.
"Sarah wanted to."
"Then why didn't she?"
He looked at Margaret before answering.
"Because she no longer knew where Elizabeth was."
The words struck the room like thunder.
Twenty-One Years Earlier
A cold autumn rain fell outside St. Mary's Hospital.
Sarah Carter lay exhausted in a hospital bed.
Beside her stood William Ashford, holding one of the newborn babies.
The little girl slept peacefully in his arms.
Across the room, Nurse Eleanor Brooks carefully wrapped the second baby in a blanket.
"They're beautiful," Eleanor whispered.
Sarah smiled weakly.
"They deserve a normal life."
William kissed Sarah's forehead.
"I'll give them everything."
Before anyone could speak again, the hospital door burst open.
Victor Hale entered with two men in dark suits.
His face remained calm.
Too calm.
"William."
William stepped protectively in front of Sarah.
"You shouldn't be here."
Victor smiled.
"I came to congratulate you."
"You know that's not why."
Victor glanced toward the twins.
"What remarkable children."
Sarah instinctively reached for them.
Victor folded his hands behind his back.
"The board has made its decision."
William's expression hardened.
"I'm not interested."
"You should be."
Victor's voice became cold.
"If these children become public..."
"...everything your father built will collapse."
William laughed bitterly.
"I don't care about the company."
"But the shareholders do."
Victor slowly stepped closer.
"They'll never accept an heir born outside your marriage."
Sarah's face turned pale.
William answered firmly.
"Then I'll resign."
Victor smiled again.
"I was hoping you'd say that."
He looked toward the babies.
"But some people believe removing the problem..."
"...is easier."
Silence.
No one breathed.
Victor's words carried a threat without ever stating it.
William looked at Eleanor.
"Take the girls."
Eleanor hesitated.
"Now."
Present Day
Emily felt tears filling her eyes.
"So Elizabeth..."
Richard nodded sadly.
"She disappeared during the chaos that followed."
Daniel frowned.
"Disappeared?"
Richard sighed.
"No one knows exactly what happened."
Margaret quietly added,
"We believed she died."
Emily stared at her.
"You believed?"
Margaret nodded.
"There was a car accident the night Sarah fled the mansion."
"The vehicle caught fire."
"No second child was ever found."
Emily closed her eyes.
"My sister..."
"...was alive all this time."
Detective Hayes wasn't convinced.
"If Elizabeth survived..."
He looked at Richard.
"...who raised her?"
Richard slowly shook his head.
"That's the question."
"And someone has spent twenty-one years making sure no one asked it."
Back at Ashford Manor, Vanessa stood alone in the greenhouse.
The burner phone vibrated once.
She answered immediately.
A familiar voice greeted her.
"The money has been moved."
Vanessa closed her eyes.
"So it was her."
"Yes."
Vanessa hesitated.
"Did she recognize Emily?"
The voice remained silent for a moment.
"She saw her."
"And?"
"There was no reaction."
Vanessa frowned.
"So they don't know."
"Not yet."
The call ended.
Vanessa looked toward the mansion.
For the first time...
She felt sorry for Emily.
That evening, Daniel gathered everyone in William Ashford's library.
Emily.
Margaret.
Richard.
Detective Hayes.
Mrs. Harris.
Eleanor Brooks.
Every surviving witness to the past.
Daniel placed the old photograph from the chapel on the table.
"I think we're asking the wrong question."
Hayes looked at him.
"What do you mean?"
"We've been trying to discover who wanted Emily hidden."
Daniel pointed toward Victor Hale.
"But perhaps..."
"...the real target wasn't Emily."
Emily frowned.
"Then who?"
Daniel looked directly at the stranger in the photograph.
"Elizabeth."
The room fell silent.
Richard slowly nodded.
"I've been thinking the same thing."
Daniel spread several documents across the table.
"The trust."
"The hidden will."
"The letters."
"They all refer to protecting one child."
Emily looked confused.
"But there were two."
"Exactly."
Daniel picked up William's damaged will.
"The surviving page mentions..."
He read aloud.
'...the Carter child shall inherit...'
Daniel looked up.
"It doesn't say which child."
Margaret gasped softly.
Richard closed his eyes.
"Oh no..."
Daniel frowned.
"What?"
Richard whispered,
"There were two wills."
Everyone stared at him.
Richard slowly removed another old key from his pocket.
"I've kept this for twenty-one years."
Daniel looked surprised.
"You never mentioned it."
"I couldn't."
He swallowed hard.
"William instructed me never to reveal it unless both children were found."
Emily's heart raced.
"What does it open?"
Richard looked toward the portrait of William Ashford hanging above the fireplace.
"His private study."
Daniel frowned.
"This is Father's study."
Richard shook his head.
"No."
"There was another."
Hidden behind the library fireplace was a narrow stone staircase few people knew existed.
Daniel inserted the old key into an iron lock.
The mechanism clicked.
A concealed door slowly opened.
Cool air drifted upward.
One by one, they descended.
At the bottom waited a beautifully preserved office.
Unlike the dusty archive rooms they had explored before, this room appeared untouched.
Books lined the walls.
William's fountain pen still rested upon the desk.
Even the clock had stopped at exactly 11:47.
As if time itself had frozen.
Richard walked toward a locked drawer.
He inserted the second key.
Inside lay two sealed envelopes.
One labeled:
Emily Carter
The other:
Elizabeth Carter
Emily's hands trembled.
"There really were two."
Richard nodded.
William had prepared two separate inheritances.
Daniel carefully opened Emily's envelope.
Inside was another handwritten letter.
My Dearest Emily,
If you are reading this, then Richard has finally decided the danger has passed.
If your sister is standing beside you, tell her I never stopped searching.
If she is not...
Find her.
Neither of you was ever meant to inherit my company.
You were meant to inherit something far greater.
The truth.
Emily quietly wiped away tears.
Daniel reached for Elizabeth's envelope.
Before he could open it—
A loud bang echoed through the hidden office.
The lights went out.
Emergency lamps flickered red.
Detective Hayes drew his service weapon.
"Everyone stay where you are!"
Then they heard footsteps.
Running above them.
Someone had entered the library.
Hayes rushed upstairs.
Daniel followed.
By the time they reached the fireplace...
The library window stood open.
Cold night air rushed inside.
On William's desk lay only one thing.
Elizabeth's envelope.
Empty.
Its contents had been stolen.
Hayes hurried to the window but saw only a black motorcycle disappearing beyond the front gates.
Richard slowly picked up the empty envelope.
His face became pale.
"They know."
Daniel turned.
"Know what?"
Richard's voice trembled.
"The missing letter..."
He swallowed hard.
"...named the real heir to Ashford Industries."
Silence fell over the room.
Emily stared at the empty envelope.
For twenty-one years, people had lied.
Framed innocent lives.
Started fires.
Committed murder.
Stolen fortunes.
Perhaps...
None of it had ever been about revenge.
Perhaps it had always been about one thing.
Whoever controlled that missing letter...
May you like
...controlled the future of the Ashford empire.
