Chapter 18: Justice Arrives

Chapter 18: Justice Arrives
The photograph lay in the center of the library table.
William Ashford.
Sarah Carter.
Emily.
Elizabeth.
And the unknown little boy.
For several long moments, no one spoke.
The sentence written on the back echoed through everyone's mind.
"The last witness is still alive."
Detective Michael Hayes carefully slipped the photograph into a protective evidence sleeve.
"If William left this behind," he said quietly, "he wanted us to find this boy before anyone else did."
Daniel nodded.
"Because whoever he is..."
"...he saw what happened the night of the fire."
Richard Collins stared at the smiling child.
Then, almost imperceptibly, his expression changed.
Emily noticed first.
"You recognize him."
Richard closed his eyes.
"I hoped I was mistaken."
Hayes leaned forward.
"Who is he?"
Richard swallowed.
"His name is Nathan Brooks."
Eleanor Brooks gasped.
"My grandson."
The Boy Everyone Forgot
Every eye turned toward Eleanor.
She slowly lowered herself into a chair, tears already forming.
"I never wanted him involved."
Emily knelt beside her.
"Nathan is your grandson?"
Eleanor nodded.
"My daughter died when he was only six."
"I raised him after that."
Daniel frowned.
"Why didn't anyone mention him?"
Eleanor looked down.
"Because William made me promise."
"He believed Nathan had seen something."
"But the poor boy was traumatized."
"He stopped speaking."
Father Thomas remembered.
"He didn't say a single word for almost two years."
Hayes asked quietly,
"Where is he now?"
Eleanor smiled sadly.
"He's alive."
"He lives by the sea."
"He restores old boats."
"He never married."
"He never wanted children."
"He spent his entire life trying to forget Ashford Manor."
A Journey to the Coast
The next morning, Daniel, Emily, Elizabeth, Detective Hayes, and Eleanor drove to the quiet coastal village of Blackhaven.
The road wound along towering cliffs overlooking the sea.
Emily watched the waves crash against the rocks below.
"So many lives changed because of one night."
Elizabeth looked out the opposite window.
"And we're still paying for it."
No one argued.
Nathan Brooks
Nathan's workshop stood beside an old harbor.
The scent of saltwater and freshly cut timber filled the air.
A weathered sign read:
Brooks Boat Restoration
A man in his late twenties sanded the hull of a wooden sailboat.
His hair was dark.
His hands rough from years of work.
When Eleanor stepped forward, he smiled warmly.
"Grandma."
She embraced him tightly.
"I need you to come with me."
Nathan noticed the strangers.
Then his eyes stopped on Emily.
His smile faded.
He turned toward Elizabeth.
His breathing quickened.
Finally...
He whispered words Eleanor had waited twenty-one years to hear.
"They're alive."
Silence fell across the harbor.
Eleanor covered her mouth.
Nathan hadn't spoken about that night since childhood.
The Memory Returns
Inside the workshop, Nathan stared at the old photograph.
"I remember."
Hayes quietly switched on a recorder.
"Tell us everything."
Nathan closed his eyes.
His voice trembled.
"I was hiding."
"Where?"
"In the glass house."
He took a deep breath.
"I liked watching butterflies."
"The fire started outside."
"I heard shouting."
"I saw Sarah carrying two babies."
Emily held Elizabeth's hand.
Nathan continued.
"William told her to run."
"But someone blocked the garden path."
"Who?"
Nathan looked directly at Richard.
"It wasn't Victor."
Everyone froze.
Richard frowned.
"Are you sure?"
Nathan nodded.
"I remember the cane."
Emily immediately thought of the symbol from the restored film.
"The raven."
Nathan's face turned pale.
"Yes."
"He carried a silver cane with a raven."
Hayes leaned forward.
"Did you see his face?"
Nathan hesitated.
"I tried not to."
"But he looked at me."
The room became completely still.
Nathan whispered,
"I've never forgotten his eyes."
A Face from the Past
Detective Hayes opened a folder containing dozens of old photographs connected to Ashford Industries.
He spread them across the table.
"Take your time."
Nathan examined them one by one.
Then he stopped.
His hand began shaking.
He pointed to a black-and-white portrait.
"That's him."
Hayes looked down.
His own expression changed instantly.
The man in the photograph wasn't Victor Hale.
It wasn't William.
It wasn't anyone the investigation had previously suspected.
The caption beneath the picture read:
Sebastian Ashford
Daniel stared in disbelief.
"My grandfather's younger brother."
Richard slowly sat down.
"I thought he died overseas."
Father Thomas quietly shook his head.
"No."
"He disappeared."
The Family Secret
Richard took a long breath.
"There were always rumors."
"What rumors?" Emily asked.
"Sebastian believed the Ashford fortune belonged to him."
"But William's father inherited the company instead."
"He never forgave the family."
Elizabeth frowned.
"So he spent decades planning revenge?"
Richard nodded slowly.
"It seems so."
Hayes looked at the photograph again.
"Then Sebastian wasn't working for Victor."
Richard answered,
"No."
"Victor was working for Sebastian."
The room fell silent.
Everything suddenly made sense.
The forged wills.
The fires.
The hidden accounts.
The manipulation.
Even The Guardian.
Someone had been financing the conspiracy for decades.
The Arrest Warrants
Back at police headquarters, Detective Hayes immediately requested international records.
Within hours, investigators uncovered a shocking discovery.
Sebastian Ashford had never legally died.
Instead, he had lived under multiple identities across Europe.
His most recent alias was...
Adrian Blackwood.
Hayes compared the photograph with surveillance images recovered from Vanessa's burner phone.
The facial recognition software produced a match.
99.7% probability.
Daniel stared at the report.
"So The Guardian..."
Hayes nodded.
"...is Sebastian Ashford."
Emily felt a chill.
The man who had destroyed her family.
Manipulated Elizabeth.
Ordered Vanessa's death.
And tried to kill them beneath the East Wing...
Was William's own uncle.
Hayes immediately signed an international arrest warrant.
Police agencies across three countries were alerted.
Airports.
Ports.
Rail stations.
Every known associate of Adrian Blackwood was placed under surveillance.
Justice had finally begun to close in.
The Guardian's Last Refuge
Far away, inside an abandoned monastery high in the mountains, Sebastian Ashford calmly watched the evening news.
The headline appeared across the television screen:
INTERNATIONAL WARRANT ISSUED FOR BUSINESSMAN ADRIAN BLACKWOOD
He smiled.
"They're finally using my real name."
Elizabeth's empty room stood nearby.
She was gone.
Vanessa was dead.
Nathan had remembered.
His empire of lies was collapsing.
Yet he showed no fear.
Instead, he opened an old wooden chest.
Inside rested one final envelope.
William Ashford's original last will.
Completely intact.
Sebastian held it carefully.
"So, William..."
he murmured.
"You protected them for twenty-one years."
He looked into the fire burning inside the monastery hearth.
"But not forever."
He reached toward the flames.
As if preparing to burn the document forever.
Then he paused.
A sound echoed through the silent monastery.
The distant roar of helicopter blades.
Sebastian slowly smiled.
"So."
"They've found me."
He slipped the will inside his coat.
Picked up Victor Hale's old revolver.
And walked toward the monastery doors.
Outside, police helicopters circled above the mountain.
Special response teams surrounded the ancient stone building.
Detective Hayes stepped from the lead helicopter.
Using a loudspeaker, he called out:
"Sebastian Ashford!"
"This is your final warning!"
"Come out with your hands raised!"
The old man stood in the doorway, untouched by fear.
He looked toward the darkening sky.
Then toward the officers below.
Finally, he smiled.
"You've arrived twenty-one years too late."
He disappeared back inside the monastery.
A single gunshot echoed through the mountains.
No one knew whether it had been fired at the police...
May you like
Or at something even more valuable.
